  • In this video JC talks about clogging. We've heard from a lot of detailers who will suggest a coating is clogged if it's sheeting. We aren't here to say it's wrong, but we want to shed some light and have open discussion on what clogging is and if it's the correct term.

Why do you call it “clogging” and where did you first hear that term?

It’s just been the generally accepted term for a coated area that has “gone flat” on a coated car but which we KNOW there is a performing coating underneath. Water spot removers have been good at restoring properties. Also, a high pH followed by a low pH wash, to get “all kinds” of dirt that acid & alkaline both address, has proven effective.

Thanks for your input! Hoping this would turn into an open discussion on why people might say clogging. Thanks for watching 😎

Or you can look at it as "masking" the properties of the coating underneath. You have a layer of dirt, grime, salt etc covering the panel and masking the hydroponic properties. Using an APC or iron remover or high ph soap then clears off the dirty layer and the hydroponic properties come back again.

@StonerCarCare Regardless of the origin of whomever coined the term "clogging", wouldn't its definition still be an accurate description of what is occurring when the water behavior becomes flat? Just as you demonstrated, a layer of dirt/road grime has accumulated on bottom end panels and as a result, this layer hinders, blocks or impedes the water beading performance (ie. clog, clogging). This term isn't far off at all from being truly representative of what's actually occuring.

Thank you that’s what I was going to say but I wouldn’t have been able to put so eloquently.

Again we aren’t disagreeing with the term, more just having an open discussion on clogging!

Clogging has always been a dumb term to use. Just like “traffic film” and many other UA-cam detailer originated terms. I don’t expect everyone to have a Chem E degree, but a lack of understanding leads to misleading terminology and in some cases completely incorrect assessments of why a behavior exists.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! This was meant to be an open discussion on terminology that is used in detailing!
This Sunday at 10:30am we are launching a video on the differences between hydrophobic vs hydrophilic vs oleophobic! Make sure to tune in for that discussion if you enjoyed this one 🙌
