There are a bunch of different groups that offer various different project management "certifications." Most of them are pretty worthless and just resume fodder. If they're very fast and require a weekend of your time and no prior experience then their value to a hiring manager is likely similarly shallow. The CAPM, despite coming from PMI, isn't really all that valuable. However, if you have literally nothing with "project management" on your resume it's a great place to start. So in that respect CAPM is a worth-while investment since it requires little more than a high school diploma, a couple hundred bucks and some study time. But hopefully it's the type of certification you earn and never recertify because you move on up to the full PMP (also from PMI). The PMP has long been the gold standard and that should be your goal. Only acquire enough of the these minor certifications to get you that first job or two and get to the PMP as quickly as possible. After you have the PMP nothing else is really supremely consequential or helpful unless you're looking at specialized certifications within project management. But as a general, all purpose certification, the PMP is pretty much it.

I had all my notes from the course in place, so I studied them right before my interview, making it so that any questions they asked, I had extremely in-depth answers to. They actually said they'd never had anyone answer so well before! Then a week later, I got the job! I've been there for 3.5 months now and I love it!
Scrum master and project manager are not the same thing. However you should get trained in both. Many projects are hybrid (iterative and waterfall), you'll want to demonstrate proficiency in both. In today's HR world which are essentially checklists for certs, you'll want both.
Hi Joe - thanks for sharing! I agree that scrum masters are definitely different from PMs in terms of roles and responsibilities and that PMs should learn about both iterative & waterfall approach!
Great video. Better if it was short. I completed this GPM certification last month and i have an offer from one of the big consulting company's that you mentioned. Thanks a lot 😊
Thanks for sharing this. I just started the Google Certificate myself. For me, it's at least partly about exploring a different job area from what I'm doing, feeling like I'm a bit stalled in career growth, and that my skill set is already pretty transferable for PM roles (I manage an online community at Microsoft and do already have a four year degree). So far it has been engaging and helpful in that way, whether or not I decide to pursue it as a career pivot.
Hi Eric - that's great to hear. I agree that it sounds like the certificate was a great fit for you because of the education it provided. I imagine your comment will be useful to others - thanks for sharing!
It's a great cert especially if you have no experience tbh but If you're responsible, somewhat organized, self starting, attentive w/foresight, inquisitive, planner and can communicate well with people plus keep a cool head this may interest you. All the terms and stuff will come in time from studying and going for certs. You're pretty much the main cog in a machine, but I think experience goes a long way due to working/coordinating with different people who pretty much will have an expectancy of reliance on you due to your position respectfully.
That was super informative each and every detail is explained so perfectly about the certification, I have a 4 years bachelors degree in Computer Science and have more than 2 year professional experience as well and I always wanted to get into Project Management role or some thing similar to that on an associate level. I am thinking to consider this google certification as the first step towards project management , I have always planned to pursue CAPM and eventually PMP as well. Thanks for this video
I took the course and got my certificate and i have landed a few interviews. I will give honest feed back how the interviews go and how they see the Coursera cert.
Thanks for posting the video @RecipeforSuccess I finished the course this week. I do have some project coordination experience but focused on evens/hospitality and wanted to change the focus. For me, it was worth it, as I did not have to pay (part of an unemployment plan), and wanted to explore this path. The course touched on theories but in my opinion, gives you hands on/step-by-step practices at the different life cycle stages. In the end, they offered discounts to seat for both CAPM and PMS-1, access to the Coursera job platform, 1 year of another platform that provides lessons and practices to different levels of interviews… I am not sure they will continue with these offerings, but since I did not hear about it in the video, decided to share. Good luck all!
That's awesome - thanks for sharing! I'm glad that you were able to take this course for free! That definitely sounds worth it! Best of luck with interviewing (if that's your next step)!
Thank you for detailed information. I just finished my second week of Google PM certification and Iam super excited. My only worry is if this wouldn’t get me find a job. Will see.

It will be a few years before it comes available to apply for, but in the meantime it gives me time to further advance in the field (my workplace has a strong focus on Lean Six Sigma).
I'm on the last course of the Google certificate. The course references readings from the PMI website regularly throughout the course. Don't know about the job market yet. Am learning a great deal. I hope that I will be able to land a job after having gone through the whole process.

@@RecipeforSuccess1 Your video felt like all I needed to get me started months ago and I wouldn't have needed to sweat a lot with other not so useful project management courses Can I train with coursera then take the CAPM exam? Or does enrolling for the coursera course mean paying for the exam too?
I will be starting next month this course and I hope I can finish it as soon as possible to get this certification, I don’t have any university degree so I hope this will boost my CV and I can get a job easily
I have a PMP and recently changed PM jobs. I will say that unless you are entry level I would caution anyone doing this right now. If you look at job postings for PMs they don't ask for this certificate as required or preferred but the do ask for the PMI credentials. So unless companies start asking for this certificate on job postings or if Google has a track record about helping applicants out it feels like a money grab. I am curious if anyone has completed this and received a PM role due to this certificate.
Hi Alan - you and I arrived at a similar conclusion (which I pointed out in this video): there isn't any current stats to prove an ROI and I also couldn't find any job roles that listed this as a qualification. That being said, for individuals who are able to take this course for free or want a low-cost option to learn about PM (and have the cash to spare!) this might be a good solution. Hopefully, a viewer will be able to circle back with us and let us know their outcomes post-graduation!
I have a 4 years degree in Civil Engineering and 2 years Diploma in Project Management and Currently working as a Security Supervisor. When I was looking for entry level jobs like project coordinator requirements, everyone is asking for 3 to 5 years experience. It’s hard to get it. So I thought if I have this certificate, it might help me in getting the job
I am a graduate and I am looking for a certification that I can add to my resume, something which is recognised. CAPM is something that seems like which is recognized. Should I just take the google Coursera course to study project management and then take the CAPM exam? Ultimately taking the PMP three years down the line.
Hi Saksham - I like this strategy! If I were you, I would look into a few training options for CAPM and compare prices/courses. Currently, It looks like the Google Course qualifies for the education hours for the CAPM and seems like it would be a reasonably priced option. I would also double check with PMI that they will accept those education hours and make sure to read through PMBOK. For full transparency, I haven't personally done this, so I can't say with 100% certainty that it'll get you through your CAPM, but it seems reasonable to try this approach. I hope that helps!
And one more question: I have a nanodegree in UX Design and a nanodegree in Product Management. I acquired both nanodegrees through Udacity programs which took me about 4 month each. Do you think another Project Management bootcamp course from Google would be the right choice here or should I go straight for the CAPM certificate? I really don't know
I don’t know 🤷🏾♀️ I just got out of university and entry level jobs are asking for 3, 4, 5 + years of experience. This still might me worth taking for recently graduates that are not really in the industry.
Hi Vania - If you aren't able to find a job, certifications can definitely help promote your resume. I think the trick is trying to decide if the company/jobs you're looking at prefer the Google PM vs. PMI's CAPM. Good luck!
Even if you don't fully meet the years of experience requirements I'd still apply. That's one of the first things hiring managers are likely to look past. ESPECIALLY with obvious entry level positions. Now, if the job is asking for 15 years in a specific field for a Sr. Lead Project Manager - yea, you're probably out of your depth. But if the job is asking for 2-3 years of experience then go ahead and submit your application. Because a lot of the people that already have 2-3 years of experience are applying for the jobs asking for 4-5 years of experience. Eventually somebody will bite on your application.
I studied psychology but I want to change careers to project management :) Yesterday I enrolled in the Google Certificate, let´s see how it goes. Thanks for the review, it helped a lot.

PMP certification is either a requirement or a ban, depending on where you go looking for work. My wife considered getting her PMP (after over 20 years of doing project management), but discovered that the "feel" many people frequently had was that the certification was covering for lack of experience and/or incompetence, and to get a pay boost.

Hi Alon - Good question! are you referring to the CAPM? If so, I would say it is based on the same information and are both entry-level, but the Google/Coursera course is an actual 'course' compared to 'exam' and CAPM has been around longer.

I will say one thing she misses out on is, if you can grind the courses away, you can technically finish in half the time, or just faster than six months. the other thing is, and i dont recall where i noticed it, but at PMI the GPM certification actually qualifies as a prerequisite for one of the certification exams.

You gotta be careful, 'cause if this Google Certification is based on PMI Guidelines, PMBok changed to the new version (Version 7) just like a week ago, so it will change the content (a few or a lot, I don't even know) and also the way companies will see this kind of "Certification". This video was awesome and extremely informative. One small correction/clarification the CAPM through the PMI does have a bootcamp course. It is a CAPM focused course that is 35 "hours of education". I took it and it is awesome.
Hi Mr.Anderson - you're right of course! You can get your education hours for PMI for an additional fee. I simply wanted to make sure everyone knew when you paid for the CAPM, it does not include the bootcamp. Unless yours was??
@@RecipeforSuccess1 Mine was not, however, at the end of the CAPM bootcamp, you get a voucher for the actual CAPM for a reduced price.
Hey! Hope you're well. I'm on the PMI website but can't find the bootcamp you mentioned. would it be possible for you to share the link with me? TIA! :)
Fantastic review! Thank you so much for posting. I'm just past the halfway point in the course.
I've worked in Digital Marketing for 8 years, using PM skills the whole time, but didn't have any actual educational qualifications for a PM job. Fingers crossed this will bridge that gap! I'd like to do Project Management in the Digital Marketing space.
Nice! How are you enjoying the content?
@@RecipeforSuccess1 It's really good. A nice mix of learning styles (video, reading, assignments), and the instructors are great. I've had a really pleasant experience so far.
Has it worked out for you since this post? Any jobs?
@@ricouptosumn Yes! I've been very fortunate since taking this course. I actually did the first 4 months worth in 4 weeks (I was off, so I could do it full time) and after 4 weeks, part of the course is to do up your resume and LinkedIn profile, so I did and within about a week and a half, I got an interview with one of the top 3 ad agencies in the world! I had all my notes from the course in place, so I studied them right before my interview, making it so that any questions they asked, I had extremely in-depth answers to. They actually said they'd never had anyone answer so well before! Then a week later, I got the job! I've been there for 3.5 months now and I love it!
You should start doing videos so we can follow your journey
Scrum master and project manager are not the same thing. However you should get trained in both. Many projects are hybrid (iterative and waterfall), you'll want to demonstrate proficiency in both. In today's HR world which are essentially checklists for certs, you'll want both.
Hi Joe - thanks for sharing! I agree that scrum masters are definitely different from PMs in terms of roles and responsibilities and that PMs should learn about both iterative & waterfall approach!
God bless you, I just discovered the google certificate, and on an off chance, typed it into youtube and BAM, here you are!
Hi Wasabi622 - thank you for the kind comment. I hope you find this video helpful and informative.

Did u get a job?
It's a great cert especially if you have no experience tbh but If you're responsible, somewhat organized, self starting, attentive w/foresight, inquisitive, planner and can communicate well with people plus keep a cool head this may interest you. All the terms and stuff will come in time from studying and going for certs. You're pretty much the main cog in a machine, but I think experience goes a long way due to working/coordinating with different people who pretty much will have an expectancy of reliance on you due to your position respectfully.
Thanks for sharing your opinion James! I really appreciate all the diverse opinions!
I'm currently taking the Google PM course. I like it so far very easy to understand and laid out well. We will see how it goes after completion!
That's awesome to hear - glad it's exceeding your expectations! Enjoy

Thanks for posting the video @RecipeforSuccess
I finished the course this week.

Welcome aboard!
Such helpful information. I was absolutely dealing with the conundrum of starting with PMI or Google.
Glad it was helpful to you!!
@@RecipeforSuccess1 Yes, I think it just helps to confirm what you are talking about from another source.
@@alanhativa4702 Thanks! Appreciate the support
Thank you for being honest about this. I have been steering people away from the google cert as PMI offers 7 free PMI courses that offer you PDU/CEU.
I am a graduate and I am looking for a certification that I can add to my resume, something which is recognised. CAPM is something that seems like which is recognized. Should I just take the google Coursera course to study project management and then take the CAPM exam? Ultimately taking the PMP three years down the line.
I have the same qstion. I am waiting for someone to help answering
I was definitely considering taking this coarse! Now I will for sure!!!! Mainly based off of the comments! 👍💯👊
That's awesome Pamela - I'm so glad the comments were helpful to you.
Great Video. Very Helpfull! Cheers!

But I still don't have the answer to the question what carries more weight...the CAPM certificate or the Google Certificate?

PMP certification is either a requirement or a ban, depending on where you go looking for work. My wife considered getting her PMP (after over 20 years of doing project management), but discovered that the "feel" many people frequently had was that the certification was covering for lack of experience and/or incompetence, and to get a pay boost.

@@BubbaGanooshhh Thanks for clarifying! The PMI course is going to be more tailored to CAPM prep. At the moment i work security in the receiving department, which means i deal with a lot of things most other security officers dont. it was a learning experience but after going through the course it has completely changed my work experience (and generally my life). You gotta be careful, 'cause if this Google Certification is based on PMI Guidelines, PMBok changed to the new version (Version 7) just like a week ago, so it will change the content (a few or a lot, I don't even know) and also the way companies will see this kind of "Certification".
Besides this, if PMbok is recently released doing a CAPM exam could be quite different comparing the new version with the old one.
It doesn’t count
