The reference to papaoutai is very clever because papaoutai means where are you dad
I think it's also meant as respectful to Stromae, another authentic European soul and musician
Dank, ik wist dat niet.
@@Zootsings And the song Papaoutai is also about Stomae growing up without his father, and missing him. I thought he died during the war in Rwanda( if I renember correctly), so the reference is not only very clever but also very real, deep and emotional. The lyrics of this song has so many layers. It's briljant! I speak Dutch and I listened to the song a couple of times and everytime I discovered new things in the lyrics. So I do hope they'll find a way to translate this on stage for the viewers( most of them) that don't speak Dutch.
Echtwaar???? Goh
As someone who's been part of the Hardcore/Gabber scene for nearly 20 years, it means A LOT to finally have some representation in Eurovision! Makes me feel like a teen again!
Exactly!
DAAROM THUNDERDOME IS 1 VAN DE GROOTSTE FESTIVALS VAN NEDERLAND EN IS EEN GROOT STUK VAN NEDERLAND EN DAN MAG HET MET ZO EEN GEWELDIG NUMMER NAAR EUROVISIE
This ! Who would have thought, back in the 90;s we would have dancing Gabbers at Eurovision song festival hahaha . The haters said it wouldnt last. in a few years its over. This isnt music ! and what not. Now you see DJ Paul in Eurovision song festival Video clip. LOL> we have come a long way.
Love you Roly, from the Netherlands! ❤
Exactly ❤
You can travel around Europe without borders, but you can’t run from the grief of losing a parent. “I’m in Germany, but I’m so alone. I’m in Italy, but it still hurts”. It’s a sad song in disguise, it’s beautiful 🇳🇱
There should be borders
Gabber is a style of clothes, hair and music. It's not Scottish btw, 100% invented in the Netherlands (in the 90's). The dance Gabber's do is called Hakkuh (kicking you legs on the beat) and music they listen and dance to is Hardcore and some Happy Hardcore. The song starts as Happy Hardcore and ends in (real) Hardcore (it's more rough and hard). Hope this gave you some info
Rotterdam = techno Rotterdam = rave
The Scots have lend it from the Netherlands. Gabba it’s called there. It’s actually quite a big scene. But 100% had the roots in The Netherlands!
@@ThomDeWit I had no idea it would expand beyond the Netherlands, now I understand why this guy mentioned it was Scottish lol
@@dannyboogert5680Parkzicht! 💥🤘🏻✌🏼
This is the most Dutch thing to ever hit Eurovision. I love it.
Pleasss... C'mon‼️
As someone who is also an orphan, Europapa had me crying by the outro. It was an unexpectedly positive surprise ❤️
❤
❤
Honey we send you all the love you need🥹❤️
❤
❤
Thank you to our neighbors in the Netherlands for sending us a little of their madness and a little of their humor, this song represents your country so well. Thank you also for the message of unity towards all the countries of Europe . We are so different and yet all the same. Cheers from Belgium.
Ty Belgium❤
Ty belgium❤❤ we appreciate you
thank you belgium for making our beers. they're the best 💙💙💙 We're all europapa
Dankje man!
Merci homme!
Thank you Belgium now gives us some points this year :P
Thank you guys for this amazing breakdown of the song. As the producer of this song, I’m so happy to hear all elements are being understood as intended. It’s a big pill to swallow; a lot of information and layers. We spent months on this song to make sure it would be packed in the right wrap.
Thanks again and keep up the great videos! 💙
legend
Love it, your synergy with Joost is off the charts
Perfect! I am almost certain this song will win, and more importantly, it's precisely the thing we all need at this tumultuous times. This was my analysis posted at the original entry ❤
This song can be interpreted on so many levels, it's pure brilliance.
-On a personal level regarding the performer's background, him missing his parents and taking their lessons to heart. And making them proud by making his Eurovision dream happen ❤
-just like a party and the value of comradery, having fun and taking things not too seriously
-poverty, transience and the struggle to maintain healthy.
-mental health issues, he talks about running from himself and feeling alone and not feeling better even with the help of people (professionals?) he pays. Also got a vibe about this referencing immigrants and refugees and how we should be more compassionate.
-and on a broader level about the pointlesness of polarisation, toxic politics&bureaucracy, paranoia, discrimination, agression and hostility we see in Europa and the world at the moment (and the last few years building up) when people have different opinions or think they have the right to take things from someone else no matter the consequences 😢 You know, all the things we are sick of as a collective.
-and I'm sure there are even more levels to this I didn't even picked up on yet!
🤡
You guys did a wonderful job. Good luck in Malmö!
This has potential to go viral before Eurovision 🎉😊
its already doing so omg 5 million views on the ESC channel within 48 hours???
Now 10 Million plus!
The ending makes this a masterpiece in it's genre.
He'll have the whole audience crying by the end, just like Lowlands 🥺❤️.
The ending had me almost crying, But it's not only the ending that makes it a masterpiece., All the lyrics in this song are briliant, the way he plays with the words and the many layers. If you only hear the music you might think it's a wel made Joke entry, but when you listen to the lyrics a couple of times you discover more and more. So I do hope they'll find a way to translate his fine paece of poetry on stage, so the viewers of Eurovision get at least a part of the message.
The instrumental bit is actually very Dutch! We call it gabberhouse.
Happy hardcore 😁❤!
Hi Guys! Have to tell you....Gabber is Dutch!! It Originated in Rotterdam!
My heart is crying...😢 a rollercoaster of emotions....
I would love for Joost to win eurovision. Because then he knows how much Europe supports him. And that he is not alone. He is a inspiration to all of us. ❤ proud of our entry this year 😊😊
*hug*
@@KidHenkie ❤️
Me too❤❤❤
So does he get the sympathy vote in a good way?
@@blee1997 also the dutch language, and the happy hardcore in the song makes it a good song to represent our country. Its the whole story and the song! The happy hardcore brings a lot of good memory back from the 90s. When i was a child. Love him for this!
12 points to THE NETHERLANDS! Go Joost! 🔥
The hard part at the end of the song, called Gabber house and it was invented in the Netherlands and where big party’s in the 90ties. Hardcore never dies. And with the borders, don’t let the borders stop you who you want to be as a person where you want to go, and grow as a person
Came to type this as well :) Their review was spot on
Scotisch gabba...never of that one 😂
Deban speaking Dutch in his intro was the best, he is officially Dutch now 😛
DANK U!
I lost my father young as well, he too was an internationalist and imbued that in me, and I love Europe. I have never voted in Eurovision, but I will be voting for this with every vote I've got.
That instrumental is called Gabberhouse/Happy Hardcore. It was MASSIVE in the 90s in The Netherlands. I LOVE IT. Joost is very popular in multiple European countries.
Prepare for a massive party on that stage in Malmö
Top 5, easily
We are ready. Let's do this!
The picture can mean him leaving behind the pain of his past, and finally fulfilling his promise towards his fater, to one day go on Eurovision.
The word 'grenzen' besides 'borders' can also mean 'limitations'.
After Ducan Laurence, Joost Klein is our new nr 1 for The Netherlands 🇪🇺🇳🇱😛, greetz from Amsterdam!!
It's great news!
...and keep him there !

12 Points to the Netherlands 🇳🇱
This made me feel so proud to be part of our European family! Thanks to Netherland we get a moment to celebrate this amazing union that we have. We have created something so unique and beautiful that it is worth celebrating and worth defending in the future. Netherland will do amazing this year ❤❤❤
Dutchie here that doesn't like this typically Dutch happy hardcore at all, but as you say William, there is this layer of nostalgia and sadness which gives this something that draws my attention. I don't think that I'll ever really love it, but it's a good thing that we're showing a different side of the Netherlands.
Thank you for your comment! It is definitely cool to see a new side. I would never have encountered this.
Scottish gabba? In my opinion it is a reference to the dutch world hit: No limits from 2 Unlimited back in the nineties. No limits is also the message of the song.
Ha ha. For me gabba is the most dutch thing since stroopwafel! I also thought of ‘No limits’ right away!
It's gabber (dutch for friend, but also an entire subculture that was insanely popular in the 90''s) two unlimited? More like DJ Paul Elstak, who practicly ruled the Netherlands gabber scene in the 90's.
Exactly! Happy to see some one got the same reference. That hitvwas very popular in the 90s in The Netherlands. There are many layers to this song.
Thank you for your great reaction.
The last segment of the song isnt scotish, but dutch 90's Gabber Hardstyle, coproduced by DJ Paul Elstak.
This song is the winner of Eurovision 2024. It's a masterpiece with a beautiful message.
This is a banger song but with a deep message. I'm loving it. 12 points for you Joost ❤
Thanks for the great review. I’m so proud of him and this awesome unique Dutch song. Tears and party at once, only Joost can do that.
I really loved how this party song left you guys feeling philosophical. That’s the power of Europapa!
It's within a supportive group of equals, that your unique qualities can shine!
inderdaad ... en wie zijn zij in EU ???
@@youteacher78 indeed... equals , rest my case
Ja ik vind het wel mooi, het is heel erg van "wij zijn Nederland maar ook Europees"
12 points to the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Wow, I'm very impressed by both analyses! ❤ Deban, you are so eloquent and share these very clever connections. Then William comes in with a very clear, more practical perspective. You guys complement each other so well! Thanks guys!
SCOTTISCH gabber? Gabber is very much Dutch. The word is Dutch. You killed me babes. Jk nice video guys ❤😂
lol omg every comment hahaha. SO you're definitely right he is doing the Dutch gabber. But this sound is also popular in Scotland. For instance, the "bouncy techno" wikipedia states: "The sound became prominent in the northern United Kingdom rave scene before it broke into the hardcore homeland of the Netherlands through Dutch DJ and music producer Paul Elstak..."
@@Wiwibloggs It's DJ Paul Elstak actually in this clip!! It's the dude in the car at the techno bit
@@Wiwibloggs Well then the Scots know who to vote for this year!
12 Points from Germany 😊👍❤️
12 POINTS Tt The Netherlands, and thank you so much!
12 points to the Netherlands ❤🇳🇱
You're the first channel I've seen look into the meaning of the song, much love and respect from the Netherlands
Already 900.000 views on UA-cam 😳, it’s not even up for 4 hours!
I think you are the first one (of the reactions online) who really get's it what the song is about. Great explanation.
I love it Italy and i love it The Netherland, we are Friends now united by music🇮🇹🤝🏻🇳🇱
Yayy I finally found your reaction. Europapa is rising on the list and 7 million views within a week, is pretty impressive. I am very proud of Joost and the team around him. This song is a party and also room for reflection. 🧡🇳🇱😁
Thank you for your beautiful reactions! You both have done such good research! The song is a masterpiece 💯💥❤
My number one! 12 points for The Netherlands. Party 🎉🎉
Strangely this is the only song this year that I liked on first listen. Perhaps because I also lost my father as a child, or because it kind of reminds me of the 90s my favourite era I don't know.
Not sure how this will end up in May but can't wait to see it on stage.
The way you pronounce Joost when you corrected yourself is spot on! In English your brain just automatically reads his name as te double oo in good, but is just like the o in ‘yo, dude’. Exactly how you pronounced it in the end. 😍🥰
Thank you so much for this teaching moment! I will learn and do better! 😍🥰😍🥰
Just tell them to pronounce it as Yoast, much easier 😅
@@oscarfernald9402 Why didn't I think of that! hahaha, Yoast as in Toast. Genius!
Right now the song is not a favorite by the bookmakers… I really think it Will do well! Especially with televote!! And also his fanbase is HUGE!!! Especially on TikTok and also his MV almost hits the 1m views within 4 hours!!
JOOST KLEIN, DROOM GROOT ❤
Do you remember the Netherlands 2014? We were 24th at the bookmakers and eventually became 2nd in the grand final. At the televotes he’s going to do it AMAZING, I’m sure 🕺🎉
At this moment already more than 4 million views one day later 🤩 I think it really has winner potential
Not to start a firestorm here but…’Europapa’ would be a more worthy winner than ‘Cha Cha Cha’ ever would have been!
Positive vibes I needed that 💙
Watch the live video
The winner is arrived 👌👌
As a young teenager he lost both his parents within a year of each other. This song is specifically directed towards his father but that's why it says "to: my parents" at the end. The fire at the end is about him leaving behind his pain of their loss. And yes "gabber" music is Dutch originally 🙂
I didn't expect to love this, but here we all are
The song is a tribute to his parents who both died at a young age. The lyrics are about living life as an orphan, which Joost is himself. That’s why he says ‘Euro-papa’, ‘being alone in Germany’ and ‘Papaoutai’ (dad where are u?) and ends with this sad ending. His dad told him that there are no boundaries in the world, both in personal achievements and between countries.
This song makes me happy
Love you both and love Joost and Europapa! ❤❤💙
It’s fun and up beat, but in it’s core it’s a sad song about him missing his parents. Who died when he was very young. His dad thought him there are no borders. And while watching eurosong with them he told them he would preform there one time. They died when he was 12 and that’s why he dedicated this song to them.
Really great !!
12 points for The Netherlands
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hey people’s, I’m a Dutchie that hates gabber or hardcore music. but after listening a few times again. I become totally obsessed with this music. My advice for people who don't like this music is to give them some more time and listen again. the reason why this music is going big and (big chance) winning this ESC 2024.
1. in a short time there are so many views. no one in history has managed to get views in such a short time. This song would definitely be top 1 on Televote.
2. there is a big ART, meaning and story inside of this music with a lot of emotion. but most people don't know, their dont give a sh***t.
3. the chorus is constantly stuck in your head. But this brings pleasure, joy and sadness. Like you're on a roller coaster
4. this music is easy to sing.
5. who doesn't like cheerful music.
6. The vibes is amazing, in addition very Getchy.
7. Joost klein is amazing singer, he has many fans in several European countries.
So ‘ EUROPAPA’ for the win! 🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱
J00ST KLEIN DR00M GR00T! 😢❤😊
the transition from the ‘happy’ and up-tempo music to the outro hits really hard
Never thought this type of song could make me cry😢 i love it❤
Thank you for youre reaction. Im a Dutchy and normaley I dont like this sort of acts at the Eurovision, but this one!!!!!! Crazy!!!! I Love it. One note......Gabbers are NOT Scottisch but 100% Dutch!!
The Hardcore/Gabber scene is 100% Dutch not Scottisch btw.
Glad this is together with Norway in the semi, because then I can vote for him! My winner :D
I love it and the message of the song. I think he is going to get a lot of points from Germany if he makes it to the final. I'm rooting for him 🇩🇪❤🇳🇱 🇪🇺
We love the love! 😍
Nostalgic, happy hardcore and hardcore. Very unique to send this style of music to the Eurovision.
12 points to the Netherlands
Both of your analyses were wonderful, but Deban deserves extra props for showing so much active effort to be open to a song that in his words is "decidedly not his type of music". Being able to find so many insights and layers, an even things to appreciate because you do not to immediately want to give up on a song is showing such an amazing actively positive way to be in the world. Love the positivity both of you radiate (without giving up the ability to be critical), you've won a new subscriber with this reaction and analysis :)
When I turned on the CC closed captions it came up with some English subtitles 😊
this is touchy, beautiful, gives hope and inspires.... what a short masterpiece , this takes me on a journey and debats a bit the situation we are living in Europe.... 🧡💚💓💙💜🤎 great choice netherlands - well done❣ this is what Eurovision is all about...and has always been - a great song to celebrate Eurovision - generally I d start the song with the burning ending... that d be more effective to bring the messagee
God, I loved both of your comments. One thing: Gabber is Dutch, not Scottish.
When I got a Baby his name will be Joost ❤
Your review and commentary were spot on, hope this song does well!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
love it!
this year serves so many good old music flavours! yaaasss
That ending..... 😢 Luckily I had a tissue on stand by
so emotional! i was not ready!
Thanks for watching the winner of eurovision 2024 🎉
I hope not !
@@steffvalmont6828 prepare yourself 🙏🏻
This song means so much! Techno ‘Gabber’ in stage now in 2024! Amazing. The end is crazy! So good.
The burning house symbolises the closing of a (difficult) era. Joost has said in an interview you have to close a door to open a new one. Papa in Dutch means daddy. So it is actualy Eurodady.
At first I was disappointed that it mostly seemed to focus on superficial advantages of being part of the Schengen Area. However there are a few lyrical gems in between that relate better to the final part, which seemed too distant from the first three minutes. Finding happiness anywhere even though you carry great sadness within yourself is a great theme, and I assume the stage show will (have to) stress it. Good luck to Joost! Droom Groot❤
William is my GO TO when I don't understand the song haha. Thank you W for being my cheat sheet.
I am curious about the staging and the live act. If its done well. I think he will win. We keep our fingers crossed!❤
I often had doubts on dutch entrees and mostly i was right. But this year, Come on this is pure genius. Its almost a European anthem, its fun listening, its easy listening, its catchy and its authentic. It has marketing all over the place en it uses compleet New music styles in esc. Which is good for atracting youth at esc. With rap and hardstyle or happy hardcore refering to the 90. So you get the older generation too.
This is everything I do not like in a song but it's ticking in your head, I'll give you that.
It’s not an act…. It IS HIM. And then it’s also us, all of us.
Can I just say this is the best review that both of you have ever done. For me anyway. I loved it and will need to watch it again as you both really got the layers of the song. Thank you both so much ❤️
Wow, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Joost is very touching 🥹❤️
Massiel (1968) holds the record for using the word la, la, la etc in Eurovision. Joost sets a new record for the word pa , pa , pa !!!!
DEBAAAN AND WILLIAM REACTIONS ARE PRICELESS!
We love it!! love from the Netherlands.
Its soooo nice! The netherlands!!❤
Congrats to joost klein and this is a new song and and it might be a catchy pop Ballard song and it’s a party disco hit and good luck to joost klein and it’s a party boogie borpa and party boogie vibes and I think it might be a dance hit from Geoff England
Love it❤
Joost Klein droom groot! 🇪🇺🇳🇱
60+ will vote for this 😅
The entry already hit 4 milion views within like, a day! 😊❤
Edit: few hours later: 4,5 million ❤
You’re the only reviewer ive seen who has bothered to look into his story! Knowing it makes the song so much deeper and more meaningful. Not gonna lie, the first time i listened to it and i saw that ending i had to wipe a little tear. My favorite song of him is called “florida 2009” especially the live version is absolutely impossible for me to keep my eyes dry! 😂 so much emotion in his faceial expression, his voice, his body language, I personally consider him the best dutch artist of my generation.
Actually, the Dutch word for 'border' is the same as for 'limit'. The use of that double meaning is very clever! Go Joost !
Proud of our song🔥
Kicking me right in the feelssss calling Gabber Scottish 😭😭 It is soooo Dutch
His dad passed away when he was 12 (Cancer), and his mother when he was 13 (Cardiac arrest)...
You do right what most comment video reactors do wrong, you inform yourself and your viewers to the backstory. That's great I'm just 37 seconds into your video, and already you earned my respect.
4.11 Gabber is originally from Rotterdam, the Netherlands LOL
4.36 Ubuntu (the Xhosa word for ""I am, so we all are as one""). The most valuable word I have learned in my entire life thus far.
6.00 his dad passed from cancer when Joost was 13-ish, and his mother died of a heart attack a year later.
His dad told him borders were silly man-made things that do not make sense.
Final comments:
Papa is Dutch for Daddy.
There are so many hidden gems and referrals in this work of Art, imho it is a masterpiece!
The Dutch music heritage hommage journey (House, dance, Gabber, EDM) is done so well.
You do not know how many gems there are hidden in this video, you can't help it your not being Dutch after all LOL
I am so proud of Joost.
Lovely ❤
