      Home is where his parents were. But they died so now his home felt burnt and he felt alone everywhere. But in Europe they understand him, there are multiple references like papaoutai (where are you dad). And pa or papa means dad in the Dutch language.
      The style is some EDM, happy hard-core and hardstyle. So it's like old upbeat Dutch music styles combined.

      @@naomi_elderhuis The burning house represent him saying goodbye. This for him, the song and being at Eurovision, is an end of a chapter. However also the start of the new one (I believe that is what the bird sounds represent).

    tom, your reaction shows perfectly why people shouldn't dismiss all unconventional upbeat songs calling them "joke entries". i love the creativity of the fun songs this year. personally i have estonia, croatia and the netherlands in my top 5 and while i enjoy them mostly for how fun musically they are, i also appreciate the message!

    • @Funkytrip73
      @Funkytrip73 6 місяців тому +3

      Exactly. It may have a bit of a joke entry vibe, but the song structure is really crafty, with little bits of extras in every piece of the track. There is a reason the Dutch has so many top DJs.

    • @jijitters
      @jijitters 6 місяців тому +2

      Totally agree, I subscribed to Tom after watching his No Rules video where he was one of the people that totally saw the vision and the appeal, while ignoring the randos online that were (ironically) taking it so seriously, despite that being the exact anti-message of the song. Tom really has a knack for seeing and understanding why countries send the entries they do even when others don't think they deserve it!

    • @weronika152
      @weronika152 6 місяців тому +1

      @@jijitters i cannot even begin to imagine why people upon seeing a performance and song that's intentionally a pastiche of 90s dance music would decide to treat it like it was the most serious thing in the world. a hilarious reaction from a fandom that also loves to complain whenever too many ballads get chosen to represent the countries. we need variety and fun songs that are not a solo artist pop songs are most welcome!!!

    Tom, you know what: every time I've listened to this song, I've started to cry at the last part. My daughters were jumping through the living room in the gabber beat, and the final part comes and Dad's tearing up. It hits so hard; I totally get your reaction.
    It probably won't be a surprise that this isn't my style of music at all. In the 90s when this type of music was literally everywhere in the Netherlands, I was happy to let it pass me by. Now, it does feel kinda nostalgic, although I'd still never listen to this type of music outside of Eurovision. I didn't feel very positive on first listen, although I was immediately drawn to the contrast between the happy hardcore style and the lyrics, which I actually find really sad. There's such a sense of melancholy there. As Deban from Wiwibloggs put it: longing and belonging. That's just it. It's already in the title: Europa is of course Europe in Dutch, and papa is dad. Well and then the end hits. Wow.
    The crowd in Malmö will probably be jumping along on this, and I'm so curious how the intensity of the lyrics will be translated to the performance. Am I proud of this? Well.. yeah, even if it's not my kind of music, there really is something special here.

      awwww i love that you watch it with your daughters, and that you both have very different reactions to it.
      that's cool to know some of the history about this music. honestly i didnt know it existed until i did that original video reacting to him being announced.
      Im guessing that the crowd in Malmo will be jumping to this like crazy too. ill be one of them 😂

      Same here! As a dutch girl, when I was young I also let this genre past by with almost no interest in it. Now, 30 years later, at almost 50 I'm totally in to this vibe! I'm dancing thru the living room as well an the end grabbed me and gave me goose bumbs. I heard that he is even better on stage and will win a lot of sceptical people over by how he will present himself and the song and it won't feel superficial at all. 8:52 - I think the image of the elderly gentleman and the kid are both supposed to be Joost. Notice how they have the same clothing and glasses as Joost.
    There's the face value aspect of the song that's happy, fun and pro-European, but the deeper layer shows so much impact - the wink to Papaoutai, the song being about belonging somewhere, and how, although we can try to escape our feelings by physically/ literally moving away, you can't escape. The image of the burning house. A brilliant song that has so many layers - so unexpected. Joost has done it! I'm proud of him as a Dutchie.
    Lovely reaction to see, Tom. Much love to you

    • @QnA22
      @QnA22 6 місяців тому +2

      I interpreted the burning house differently. At the start the house, which is made up of different EU countries styles, is whole. He sings, let's come together, this is our last chance. Then in the end the European house burns. It's a warning that it's a possible future. We never know what you miss until it's gone forever, just like his parents.

    • @JelleTheTunes
      @JelleTheTunes 6 місяців тому +3

      I also interpret it as him as being all three. He has been fleeing from pain all over Europe, but it's not fulfilling. In the end hefound that his parents are always with him anyway ('ik heb gelukkig geen visum nodig om bij je te zijn'). Current Joost is saying 'it's OK, we/I've come full circle; we can safely burn this pain, so that we all (kid, current and old man Joost) can say goodbye to pain and just enjoy good memories of mum and dad.'

    Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them.

    Excellent video! I think the song is great. The end part: I also interpret it in the sense that Europe is on fire and that we must join forces to change this.

    I think the fandom and the Eurovision app are MASSIVELY underrating this. In my opinion, this is more deservedly of a win than Duncan Lawrence's song was! It actually represents the Dutch music scene! Really great message! It ain't about praising the EU, it's about his dad! This is art! Had no idea about the Dutch music scene with 'Gabber' scene until I heard it.

      Why bring Duncan Laurence into this? Two totally different artists so no comparison imo.

    Apart from S10 having a cameo, Donnie, a popular Dutch artist is sitting on the other side of Joost. He's the best friend of Joost, and he's the one who introduced Joost to music and taught him how to rap. Also, little fun fact, Joost has his own label, making him an independent artist.

    I'm a bit afraid that non-Dutch speaking first time viewers/listeners won't understand at all what this song is about. It's pretty amazing catching this duality in one song. We Belgians have his back in the semi-final so I expect it going to the final for sure.

    This is my fave this year. Reading a lot of comments and the lyrics are a lot deeper then they sound at first. The chorus, the drop, the ending it's a 10/10! Also it's gone up to 5th in the odds now.

    I was so conflicted with this song but just relistening it has hit with me finally. What a song!! And I love how you thought this wouldn't make your top 10 but it seems to be your favorite of the mix 😂
    It does scare me though that it requires more than one listen to really hit and I feel most viewers won't connect with it first time. 😢

    For the really first time i love the song from my country and really hope to get one of the Top from Eurovision this year!🙏 I also like France with Mon Amour, that one is beautiful, but Europapa means so much with a true message and means a lot for people to be one in Europe! By the way; i like it a lot how you did this video with all your thoughts! That is epic because so far you are the only one and i love that!

    You know the thing is that Joost also is such a marketing genius by only uploading it to Eurovision channel and creating a TikTok dance. Also adding some really deep emotional piece in it at the end is perfect. He uses biology for this since he knows that hardcore buildup is perfect and then increases emotion by the hard bass of the hardcore and then a beautiful transition to the emotional part. This makes sure that people are high in their emotions resulting in the emotional part hitting very hard.

    Thank you Tom for another great analysis. Thank you for crying and showing your emotions. I was not known to Joost's music. It was not something I would think I would like. But when he was announced a while back I used your video about him to get to know him and his music better. And I fell for him, his honestness and his charisma. And when the song was released I immediately got hooked on its positive vibe. For me that is the biggest difference between Europapa and the entrances from Finland, Estonia and Croatia, that all have some kind of aggressive tone in it. Joost is fun from the beginning to... almost the end. And that end makes it really stand out from the other songs I mentioned. It has such an unexpected emotional impact. I have to cry every time I watch the video. And what.... almost 3,5 million views in 1,5 day here on UA-cam? That is so deserved for this orphan following his father's advice to embrace the world and dream big.
    I think everyone that says this song is superficial, should be ordered to watch this video, cause you explain so well, what makes this song special and unique. Thanks again.

    The ending gets most people emotional for some reason. I see many go in tears. It goes from gabber party style, straight to tears. Why is my question? Joost hacked the human brain.

      I think it’s because it reminds everyone nothing last forever.
      I would also say the scene with the burning windmill triggers something as at the start of the movie it’s beautiful and colourful.
      I know we are trying to keep politics out of it but l do think the song has quite a strong political undertone. It’s an ode to Europe but maybe also an ode to so much suffering and loss that can exist in this fun and beautiful continent.
      Sorry not sorry🤷‍♂️.
