Unfortunately, his parents died when he was a child. This song is dedicated to his late father. That's why it's called EUROPAPA. The part in the song “I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. Joost himself said that his musical style is diverse. When Joost was asked what song they should listen to in order to understand you. He answered Florida 2009 (it's about his parents) and Wachtmuziek (it's about mental health). I recommend listening to them. You have to translate it, because he sings in Dutch.

Writing songs is like a therapy to dedicate songs mostly to his parents. His father give him the mindset that there are no borders. Borders are just invented by people so dare to think without limits. why don't you invent your own world. If you want to know more about Joost Klein you should give Florida 2009 a shot and Wachtmuziek. Both are in Dutch but there are lyrics for you can translate in English. It gives a better understanding who he is.

Joost used the Dutch word Europa cleverly, and extend it to Europapa, as a vehicle to use the word papa over and over again (I guess papa has never been used so many times in any song) to honour his father, who also taught Joost to broaden his view beyond the borders of the Netherlands because borders a just a concept invented by humans. The start of the song and the passport thing refers to that. Now he crossed the boundaries of the Netherlands like his father told him to do by his entry to the Eurovision contest and thus leaving the 12 year old boy inside him behind (represented by the last shot of the burning house where he stood in front of his "father and his 12 year old self"). Let's hope he can now finally move on now he virtually burned his traumatic past.
