  • This video briefly describes how to reload the Bug-A-Salt SHRED-ER cylinder cartridge with an approach that takes advantage of salt's tendancy to clump and stick together, using hygroscopy.
    en.m.wikipedia...
In this case, I've used a tape barrier at the bottom-side of the cartridge to keep the salt from falling out when pouring it into the chambers. By leaving the cartridge outside overnight, it absorbs moisture from humidity in the air. Then, after the salt has been fully dried, it will be held firmly in place within the cartridge's chambers, removing the need for a physical barrier like tape or glued tissue paper.
    TIP:
Remember that it will be helpful to brush off any excess salt or salt residue that seeps onto the rotation gears or any other outside part of the cartridge, since extra salt may go into the gun and contribute to long-term malfuction. Ideally, try to fill the chambers without pouring salt onto the gears or into the center of the cartridge that keeps it mounted to the gun. This way, after the salt has dried, the cartridge will continue to operate smoothly with less rotational friction. Rotational friction, caused by salt residue from the bottom-side of the cartridge, can be corrected by simply cleaning the plastic mounting base where the cartridge is loaded.
    INITIAL CARTRIDGE CLEANING:
Removing the leftover tissue paper and glue from the cartridge after first time use is advisable for the best reload performance. My method for cleaning is to place the used cartridges in a plastic container (with a good water seal) filled with isopropyl alcohol (70%-100%) and salt as an abrasive. You only need enough solution to fully submerge the amount of cartriges you are cleaning -- kosher salt may be preferable for higher abrasion. Let them soak for about an hour (experiment to find the best soaking time) and then shake the container vigorously to separate the attached tissue paper from the cartridges. Dump the alcohol and salt solution and then rinse cartridges in water.
    OPTIONAL:
Re-soak in water, shaking the container vigorously and then dump the water. You may repeat this process to remove more paper debris.
*Neither alcohol, nor salt, are required for this part of the cleaning process. Merely soaking the cartriges in water will, over time, dissolve the glue and loosen the tissue paper ring. Alcohol and salt just speed up this process.*
After soaking, you may -and probably will- still need to scrub off any remaining residue. The cleaning process is the most annoying part, but you will only need to do it once for each used cartrige, so do it right! ;)

So just fill em up with salt and spray water on it, let it dry?

I do a similar method, however I use a toaster oven at 200 F for 20 minutes. It works well.

I think you can remove the center and put it back again after the salt dries

Have we got a shot comparison vid coming? I'd like to see the reload vs factory rounds.

Sure thing. The next video I have planned is a full demonstration of how I clean and load the cartriges. I'll add a shot comparison at the end.

Is this an endorsement for modifying my merchandise? I feel like modifying the bug-a-salt shred-er may cause damage and/or inoperability and will likely void the warranty?

Lol who's to say! But, no preferably not that.

There's a warning on them about not modifying the merchandise, but it's up to you.
