He also wrote Runaway Train for Roseann Cash, a #1 country hit....and of course, a member of the Kingston Trio for many years, replacing original Dave Guard after a few albums.
Everybody shoulda been listening to Gladys & the boys when she said to get on the Friendship Train. Things woulda been way better by now. Peace & love yall, peace & love 🤘😎🤘
Sad and true, but remember this does nothing for white people. Whites are always going to be on top so why would they give up their number one position. Its the blacks who would gain and whites just aren't going to let that happen.
GREAT lineup of acts! Skylark featuring future Grammy winning record producer David Foster on keyboards. Lead singer Donny Gerrard (RIP) went on to become one of Mavis Staples' touring backup singers. Talk about coincidences!
I once dated a singer and musician. We talked of marriage. I told him the only thing I really wanted in our wedding would be if he would sing "Wildflower" to me. Then he cheated on me and we split for good.
What an episode. Gladys is adorable, beautiful, charming and a great singer. I also found the somewhat funk version that the group Skylark made for Joni Mitchell's classic, "Woodstock", to be super interesting.
@@jnadle1 CSNY, did my favorite version of this song, but I don't know all that have been done. This one by Skylark was cool too and added other different elements to its arrangement. It got quite personal and in my opinion it got detached from the original and the CSNY version, I don't think it merged them.
I think this is my favorite episode so far. Gladys Knight and The Pips were INCREDIBLE! I love how Midnight Special is releasing all the shows, in order, on Friday nights. It's so cool having Gladys announce who the artists are for next week!!

Canadian group Skylark follow up to "Wildflower" in the US was "I'll Have To Go Away" that went to # 106 (Billboard Bubbling Under) & # 39 (Adult Contemporary) in August 1973. Their last charted song was "If That's The Way You Want It" that went to # 55 (Billboard Soul R&B) in January 1974. The late singer Donny Gerrard had a solo career with "Words (Are Impossible)" (# 37 Soul, # 23 AC & # 87 Hot 100) in 1976 & drummer Carl Graves "Baby, Hang Up The Phone" (# 18 Soul, # 23 AC & # 50 Hot 100) in early 1975.
Tonight, I learned something new. The Pips all have names! And apparently, it's been a family affair for all these years. I liked the electric Company wardrobe gladys & the Pips were sporting, made me nostalgic for being a kid again. Dr.John was crazy, he was having so much fun on stage.
Dr. John - Such a Night and Sweet Gladys Knight and the Pips as our Wonderful Hosts. Yeah, Such a Night, Thank you Midnight Special, For a Wonderful Night!!!
Gladys and her Pips. I’ve long loved them and admired Gladys’ loyalty to her backups. From this show I now know they are all family. They seem so well grounded and connected. She’s just a lovely person and that shows through in her singing.
Was everyone aware that the timeslot for this series for its entire run, except for the last season (when it moved up an hour), was an amazing 1-2:30AM? That must have severely limited the number of people who saw it in its first run, especially in what was mostly the pre-VCR era.
The lead singer of Skylark always reminded me of Mr Jacobs, one of my elementary school teacher. He was a towering light skin brotha w/ a natural hair style ( small Afro). Very fond memories.
Besides sounding amazing, in the opening segment, Gladys Knight and the Pips dressed like they were on a bowling team, which many of us were in the 70s. Dr. John, on the other hand, did not look like he had come from the bowling alley.
@@alanvallazza9781 one of many ex-wives he would leave behind. he was never cool. he's just an overrated figure in music who thinks his shit doesn't stink.

The band Skylark were really good. I always liked the song Wildflower and the performance of the Woodstock song was excellent. Good show, thanks for posting these.
Interested to see John Stewart (no, he's not the Daily Show Jon Stewart). He was with the Kingston Trio, but was releasing solo albums at this point in time.
@@gregoryduncan3067 Yes! I like some earlier work too. I still have my "The Phoenix Concerts" LP. There is a song he does called "Kansas Rain," that I love. That live album is wonderful - from 1974.
I was 12 that year, huge rock fan, this show was great but they didn't get many big rock bands on the show, so I would be excited but only a few shows I'd watch, still cool to look back.
Dr. John was so dedicated to his craft that he toured with Professor Longhair as his guitarist because he wanted to improve his piano playing by studying the master.
Thanks This particular show has one of the greatest lines, Dr John loved Skylark n every piece of music was in the day dances in jr high 45 records 37 cents. Had hands full of em strange thing still got most of em in dusty boxes mmm
I remember a lot of shirts like that from my college days in the late 60's, including ones that plainly identified the plant being depicted. By '73 they were almost mainstream.
Interesting , all the songs that Gladys Knight & The Pips performed were " Motown " songs , they must've " Technically " still under contract with them as their " Buddah " album Imagination was released in 1973
Why the heck does both Skylark performance have "The Midnight special" logo in the corner? I don't think I've ever seen any official clip or show segment with this?
Gladys Maria Knight is drop-dead gorgeous, PERIOD!!!
she is a beauty! Women in the 1970's were so beautiful!
Gladys! Gladys! Gladys!
Imagine if the media and politicians promoted unity, kindness, togetherness, The friendship train would work
I never really heard Gladys Knight get to talk and show her personality on any show. She absolutely shined as hostess on this MS. What a lady!
Amazing that Gladys and the Pips started in 1952 when she was only 8.
She’s so cool and smart and I’ve never heard her host a show. This is a really good episode of MS.
A true Goddess!
Great observation. Very true. I liked her sass and sense of humor.
Mavis Staples has such an expressive, tough, but loving and inviting voice.
I love the Staple Singers, check out Pops Staples solo album ' Peace To The Neighborhood'
For you trivia lovers, John Stewart wrote Daydream Believer, one of the Monkees biggest hits.
He put out a hit song called "Gold" in 1979. It was from his most commercially successful album. That's one song from him I actually remember.
My favorite of all The Monkees songs.
He also wrote Runaway Train for Roseann Cash, a #1 country hit....and of course, a member of the Kingston Trio for many years, replacing original Dave Guard after a few albums.
Merald "Bubba" Knight should have ventured into acting. Hard to believe the Pips had all ready been together 21 years when they hosted this show.
Everybody shoulda been listening to Gladys & the boys when she said to get on the Friendship Train.
Things woulda been way better by now. Peace & love yall, peace & love 🤘😎🤘

Who is the woman singing with Skylark? Always loved "Wildflower." I can't find the name of a woman that sang with them.
This episode was PACKED with greatness. What a great lineup!

THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL IS THE GOAT❣️💜💕😍🤩
Dr. John does "Such a Night" on this episode. Such a treat. He did that in "The Last Waltz". Be kind of like a tribute to Robbie Robertson.
The Staple Singers were in this too. More of a tribute to him than I originally thought.
And Skylark sang "Woodstock" which The Band played at on top of that. Coincidence?
And Martin Scorsese was the assistant director on the Woodstock motion picture and also directed The Last Waltz. No coincidence.

Gladys Knight has probably never sang a bad note in her life. Merald and Gladys hamming it up as quarrelling brother and sister was golden!
