You don’t find this much talent on one show today. The 70’s were the best decade for music. 👍🏻👍🏻
This is the GREATEST channel for those of us who remember when “The Midnight Special” gave us the ability to SEE the artists we only experienced on vinyl.
Thank you, again, for the greatness and excitement that kids these days will never experience!😊
❤
FM radio came to my little country home in 73.
No auto tune,no lip syncing. I'm so blessed to have grown up with such wonderful and truly talented artists. Thank you so much for sharing ☺️ miss you Ms. Rivers.
Mac Davis was an incredible entertainer and such a talented songwriter.
Listen to the Kenny rogers song, planet, Texas Listen to the Kenny rogers song, planet, Texas
Mac even wrote songs for Elvis Presley
RIP Mac
Thank you for posting these videos. I cannot overstate the amounts of pure happiness that these programs produce.
We love to hear that!
@@themidnightspecialtvshow I second that TMS!!! I would sneak up at night to see this. I bought all of the discs when you were selling the collection on DVD (2002/2004??) Got excited everytine I got that box in the mail. Now we can see the entire episodes. Loved all these artists. Looking forward too all your post.
I miss the variety we had on radio before FM took over! The Midnight Special was the window into our radios long before MTV came around.
indeed..
Yes... fuckin great. Thank you
RIP, Billy Preston. I was so lucky to have him as my music influencer. And, a wonderful person.
He was also a friend of The Beatles and recorded 10 tracks with them.
A wonderful person? Do you know of his criminal history? No wonder why we are, where we are, as a society…
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH He is referred to as the 5th Beatle.
@@BarneeFife Who are you to judge? Jesus, did not. He forgave.
@@BarneeFifeLook also into his childhood. Dig deeper dude.
The world needs more of this
🎼Yes, indeed, Art.

I was about 10 when this show started. I would sit up and watch this on a black and white 13" TV. We had 3 channels back then, but we had some damn good show like this to watch.. Thanks for posting these and please keep them coming...
Thanks for sharing! We will keep them coming, tell all your friends.
I was 10 :)

I was just transported back in time to February 16th, 1973, and I never even left the room. As Mac Davis said it... I can look back now and know what was important. 💜
Happy Mothers Day 💐
Happy Sunday 🕊 Thank you for sharing! 💖

Happy Mother's Day! Love your post!
@@loboblue5441 Thank you! 🌹
I turned 18 that day. The music of my time was very special. I never missed a midnight special. The same was true of SNL. It was a great show then. These singer/songwriters of the past will never be outdone. 😊
More talent in an hour than we get in a decade now.
You are showing your age. In "our" day it was called the "Generation Gap". There is so much talent going on right now that is worthy.

My dad worked 3-11 and I would wait up for him. He let me watch this show with him!
Absolutely stunning….a show like this in modern television is dearly missed 😢
I'd forgotten how funny Mac Davis was. Thanks.
He & Nick Nolte were hilarious in North Dallas 40
Mac Davis deserved an supporting Oscar nomination for the best performance in the best pro football movie ever made. The parallels between Mac's personality and that of Don Meredith, the real-life inspiration for Seth Maxwell, are uncanny for those of us who remember Dandy Don from his Monday Night Football days. It was so good I read the book, which is a whole lot wilder than the film. The Kindle version is just $1.99 if you're interested.
This is just absolute gold to me. Billy Preston could steal any show.
Holy shit the Doobie Brothers. "Listen to the music" was an exercise in counterpointal genius. Patrick Simmons' fingerpicking is why few people can cover this tune. And live off the floor to boot! Megále!
@pluvio Even "Jesus is Just Alright" had Burbank rocking that edition.
Like many others, I can't overstate how much joy and nostalgia you're giving me with these full-episode posts. Burt Sugarman had a genius level inspiration when he thought up this show. Nothing like it before or since.
Billy Preston! So good. And The Doobie Brothers. Live, no lip syncing.
I had just graduated from high school and we used to meet up for the Midnight Special and we loved our Doobies!
The group, or the other kind, LOL.
@@robmatlock7675 Both!
Mac always seemed to chuckle in his songs.
He was so damn good in North Dallas Fourty too!
@@mooville32I love that movie, and Nick Nolte too! 🎉
Great host and such varied diversity; never watched much of these shows and glad to see the talent now. Old Waylon was something and that 'sock it to me' phrase? The '70's!
Yes Joan Rivers and Mac Davis, two people that could not be more culturally different sharing the stage, you don't see that anymore. At that time no one talked about red and blue states, it was just America
I loved Mac Davis as a kid. He was all over the place back then. TV and radio. Great personality. Great singer and very funny. I was too little to stay up for these so it's so great to see them now. Be rest assured, if I were older back then, I would have never missed a show.
Holy crap! That version of "Blackbird" by arguably the fifth Beatle, Billy Preston, was incredible! Thank you for uploading this!
I noticed one of the Brothers Johnson playing in the band.
@@QueenSnowPea I saw him too. George Johnson
Billy gave Paul McCartney's classic song a sweet infusion of gospel and soul. Amazing energy!
@@QueenSnowPea I think it's both Brothers Johnson in the band as it looks like Louis on the bass.
Everybody was a fifth Beatle including Murray the K.
I well remember this program on TV, even down here in Aus in the 70s. Now that it is starting to be made avaible again on UA-cam is a gift that we cannot repay. BTW Burt's orginal idea to create this show has given us now a brilliant, well recorded, time capsual of the music of the era. Showcasing artists who could play live (mostly with songs they had written themselves) and no computerised electronics to assist, simply relying on the ability to sing and play a musical instrument using pure talent, refined with 100s of hours of practice. Thank you
Mac was such a great host! I love these episodes. Thank you!!!❤
The Doobie Brothers, wow tight and precise. Has that real end era of Vietnam War feel and look to it
Good music bad times.. only diff now..we just got bad times..
Should have used naplam
ya they look so 1973 to the max
The Doobies without Michael McDonald…even better!
This is the time I fell in love with the Doobies. Good stuff, diff sound as time progressed, but this was GREAT! Here they’re a BAND; later, they almost were an orchestra. But don’t forget “black water;” a masterclass in pop music in later years.
Like many others have said here, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THESE INCREDIBLE VIDEOS! As time goes by it becomes increasingly more evident that the 60’s and 70’s were the best decades for modern music, nothing produced since has even come close. This takes me back to a time when life was still difficult, but still made sense. People preached peace, love and brotherhood……what a novel concept.
I just loved Mac Davis. Such a great entertainer.
WOW! Best Music Channel on UA-cam-thank you so much for preserving & posting these classic performances!
I can't believe i took that show for granted. I'd watch it every week. Didn't apreciate it for how great it was.
These musicians are real life super heroes. Sonic Shamans. We don’t have many these days but sure glad these videos are proof that we once had an abundance of great artists. Thanks. 🔥🤘🏽
Thank you for posting these full episodes. Wow, to see one in its entirety is so great. Please keep ‘em coming! I’m simply elated and so very grateful. 👍🏻 🙏🏻
I love this. Thank you for another whole episode. Please know how much we all appreciate these gems. I was in high school when this was originally broadcast, and always made sure I was home by Carson, so I would be in place when TMS came on.
Mac Davis..there's a blast from the past!
❤50 years ago but timeless, i love it , greetings from germany 😊 🎉
You know, in this here digitalized 'Eef-Eif'n World - a little simple music and good laughs is all one really needs. Respect from someone born in 69 (and missin my childhood)
Can we talk about Mac Davis? My memory of him was definitely not cool. But he was THE MAN on this show! 😎
He dominated AM radio to the point where it was annoying.
It definitely wasn't cool to like him like say maybe Tom Jones.
So many artists I couldn't appreciate until I got older.
John Denver & Gordon Lightfoot come to mind.
Mac seemed like a good guy too
I was still in junior high when he was all over radio and TV. At the time I never gave him a second look. I was into the Beatles, Stones and the Who. I only learned much later he was a fantastic talent.
Mac would make up a song on the spot from a random phrase shouted to him from someone in the audience on his TV show. Never saw anyone else do that!
What a treasure! I was -38 days old when this originally aired. I would like to think my mom and dad were watching this weekly while I was preparing my exit into the world. What tremendous and diverse talent live on stage every week. It was nice growing up in the late 70s and 80s but Midnight Special was gone before I was old enough to stay up to watch it, so thank you so much for bringing these back to us.
I remember seeing this one, i was ten and my oldest brother at 17 was babysitting us two youngest kids and he let us stay up to watch the midnight special. Lol he got into trouble for letting us stay up, i told my mom because Mac Davis was one of her favorites....😂 My brother has passed on two years ago, but this was one of the times i felt close to my brother who thought he was too grown to hang around a 10 year old kid. 🤔
I was 10 also, I remember staying up late with my Mom and Dad R.I.✌️ watching the Midnight Special ✌️♥️🍺🍻
Thanx for sharing that wonderful memory!😊
Thanks for these shows. What a diverse time for music.❤📺🎼
I LOVE seeing these whole episodes brings back a lot of memories growing up in the ‘70’s and the big thrill of being allowed to stay up late on Fridays to watch Carson and this
All genres of music on one show, I miss those days!
1973 was a great year for me personally and such great music. Never missed the midnight special. Thanks for posting
I was 14 and The Midnight Special was must a watch every week!
@1973 thunderbirds what happened to you
Not to mention Don Kirshners Rock Concert which debuted the same year in September. Two years later Saturday Night Live debuted.
imagine see this live!..those folks had no idea theyd never see anything this great again..Doobies alone were unbelievable!
First time i saw Billy Preston with the Beatles at the rooftop concert in 1969. Such a talented young man then. May you rest in peace BP.
It is simply amazing all the great musicians that came from the small city of Lubbock Texas..
Hi, Anthony! Well, I am from a Texas city to the west of Lubbock and I remember spending a month in Lubbock one night in 1975. There wasn't much else to do so that gave kids time to practice, play music in garages and in local skating rinks (Buddy Holly & the Crickets), get good at it, and then go off to the big time.
BTW Lubbock is now advertising that it is now the top city for business, great cheaper housing, food, events and growth.
YES!! So missed Midnight Special!
So many grameat artists and performers. This was an every Saturday night staple in my house. So glad to see these again. Thank you!🎉
I was 13 got to stay up with older brother and sister. I loved the music mix.
Hey, same with me, except watched on my own. Born in 1960. An amazing time to be a teenager.
This was great! Still looking forward to the ABBA episodes where they sing live
Thank you Burt for allowing us now "older kids" to enjoy these amazing episodes again. Also, your interview on the Bob Lefsetz Podcast was great. Thank you, Rich.
I really liked the early Doobie brothers music much better than their music after 76
Me too! Double drummers!
Yes sir. They got hijacked.
Michale McDonald
I never cared for Michael McDonald. He always sounded like a seal in heat.
McDonald ruined them.
Its fun to just stumble on these gems. What Incredible memories this brings back. Billy Preston playing a Beatles tune 4 years after on Get Back. . Mac Davis teaching how to play hambone music. Doobie Brothers -1973. Listen to the Music. At their peak in my view... . Buddy Hollies bandmate that missed the plane in 59... Waynon Jennings. Billy Paul's. Mrs Jones still resonates. Musicians with ties to the Beatles and Buddy....Music was on to something back then. Maybe one day it will be rediscovered.
The 70s was the best time to grow up for real!! ✌🏼
I was pregnant 2 months with our previous little Wilson girl that will be born in September. She's almost 50 now and beautiful, and a great person. I love these shows.
I grew up playing music like Mac is doing. So many great memories.
Pure talent No voice synthesizer 😊😊
I was so in love with Mac Davis .. Lawd
Thanks for posting these episodes. I can’t wait for more.

Mac Davis could do it ALL, with a grace, style, & sense of humor (while never taking himself too seriously) that just doesn’t exist anymore….
Miss those days 😢😅🤘😎
Yea watching this makes me tear up a bit, if only we could go back to these times! Life was still full of innocence back then, and some #KICKASS music! There will never be another time like the 70’s! I remember stumbling in to watch these with my brothers and sisters, and dad watched every single one with us too! I still listen to all these good ole records too!
When it wasn't black and white! It was TALENT!! That's all that matters!!!
Bless Burt Sugarman, and The Midnight Special!
Thanks for another episode of music history!
Old Folks MTV proud to be a member !! 🤘
Did anyone else use the Midnight Special to cap off a night of partying or was it just me?
I do now! 😀 Was just a kid then.
Kept me awake while babysitting back in the day. 😅
Absolutely no one did that. Just you.
@@jeremyc9593thats a lie. I used it to either cap off or get the party started!! If it’s all night it’s alright!😊
NOW I can watch The Midnight Special, but back when it was first on and in high school, lights were out at 10:30. Dad had to get up for work at 4am, so he watched the 10:00 news and after that the house was quiet. I don't think I was even allowed to stay up for the news. So I guess I am grateful for a platform like UA-cam so I can watch it now.
So sorry you missed so much. We had an early bedtime but on Friday and Saturday nights we could sit up as long as we wanted to. We watched everything on NBC from Sanford and Son straight through to the Midnight Special. What wonderful memories!!😊😊😊
😂😂😂😂loved how joan rivers made mac davis blush ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂
Billy Paul…what an incredible voice!
I like how he laughs during the first chorus.
Billy Preston’s band included George Johnson on guitar and a !7 year old Louis Johnson (The Brothers Johnson) Louis would go on to record with everyone notably Michael Jackson and thumping master,I watched Midnight Special every Friday night (my parents loved music and they knew I did too,I was 10 years old when this aired) it opened my ears to all this beautiful music,The Doobie Brothers destroyed their set and I guitar lessons that year,I still listen to all of this music (It never gets old,we do😂)
Man I never get tired of listening to the dobbie bro.
I was so in love with Mac Davis!
So nice to see all these artists playing live.

i wasn't born in the 70s as i was born in december of 1980 but this is the kind of music my parents enjoyed. this is the good shit. not that awful crap that kids are listening to these days. my dad would really hate today's music.
Billy Preston! Child prodigy! Looking sharp!! Doing a great Ray Charles, and Blackbird, uptempo! ❤
This is why I like music if all genres.
12:58 The Doobie Brothers “Jesus is just Alright’” was a new record! NICE 👍!
Used to love seeing these midnight specials and still enjoy seeing them now. Thanks for sharing these memories. ❤️🙏🏻
Billy Preston's hair is fabulous!
Mac davis was gorgeous...love the accent too
Elvis always gets the credit for "In the Ghetto" but MAC DAVIS WROTE IT!! Love me some Mac
Most people know Mac wrote it. Elvis did an awesome job singing it.
All these songs i listened to growing up in the seventies. What a great time!
Incredible talent! Thank you for posting. 👍
Mac Davis!! Great song
It still amazes me that they could get that kind of talent together for a tv show.
Doobie Bros were great on this - esp Listen to the Music
I would take any of the talented artists on this video over the SHIT digitally put out today. This is pure talent!
Save this is what your parents said....😂
Yes!!!
I’m gonna say Amen!
Ooh Mac Davis! Thank you Chevrolet!

Wheee my mom had the biggest crush on Mac Davis back then, had his records,,,, I can see why. Way to go Mom!! 😅

Best music and Era epic times
Such a pleasure seeing Waylon Jennings in his younger days. One of the pioneers of the original rebel country movement along with Willie Nelson.
