  • The Skeleton coast has a fearsome reputation as a ship graveyard, Shipwrecks and skeletons litter the coast here. The pilot guide recommends staying at least 6 miles offshore, but we found an isolated anchorage amongst the dunes to get ashore and go skeleton hunting.
We have been sailing around the world for 6 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs, lows, and challenges of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Exceptional film making. The editing was very special. All the drone shots, particularly the ones of the flamingos showing the geometry of their take-off and flight patterns were especially beautiful. The editing of the music fit in perfectly with the shots. Having watched your videos since you were in the South Pacific, I think in addition to your sailing skills and courageous ocean roving, you have become consummate film makers. Bravo!

Your cinematography and production quality is some of the best among the sailing channels - well done. I have always been fascinated by the Skeleton Coast. Can you imagine the sense of desolation of Age-of-Discovery sailors who were washed up on that coast?

The flamingos soaring past the towering dunes, just spectacular. You have captured the persistence and fleeting majesty of life, even in such a stark landscape. The skeletons, the crumbling buildings and the enormous shifting mountains of sand just remind of how powerless we are against the relentless forces of Nature and Time.

Hi Matt and Amy. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and have been able to travel to Namibia numerous times in my 4x4. In 2014 I drove across the Namib desert from Solitaire (remember the stunning apple tarts/strudel?) to Walvis Bay. It is the oldest desert in the world, with the highest sand dunes. It is an absolutely stunning place and very remote. It took us five days to get from Solitaire to Walvis, which alludes to how vast it is. One of the many bucket list highlights of that trip, was driving down the dune slip faces, which are very high. It takes a certain technique, or else you could experience a disaster. But exhilarating and nerve-wracking at the same time. Namibia is an amazing and unique country and I keep returning because you never tire of it.

Ooh, bad teaser at the end. Look like you’re off the UK rather than 15S
Another great episode and why I look forward to your postings. Stunning again. Matt’s shingles is more than unfair at such a ‘tender’ age, and so sad he wasn’t feeling up to climbing the dunes 😥 I do though note another lesson in passage planning to both sail up and arrive in such great conditions.
But while I might have my Ocean, I have a ton of questions as an opportunity to learn…
    - you sailed up in near perfect conditions, we’re on a beam or reach judging from the boom, but we’re still white sails v code 0/genakker/spinneake sailed asymmetrically. Not worth the faff and didn’t need to make the time?
    - but then you sailed poled-out white sails … for the heading to sail dead downwind I presume?
    - and I note Amy Reece ing the main, not head-to-wind, but sailing by the gib and letting the main off the allow the sail to be dropped and halyard retightened 🙂
    - What sunglasses are you using? Clearly very effective in strong light 🙂
    - and your sunset shots remind me of sunsets over the Atlantic … stunning light and colours
Thanks again for sharing your amazing story. Every good luck to you both … and may the shingles be gone!

Fog on this coast. There are some well adapted creatures here. One species of beetle that stands on its head, captures the fog, which then condenses and the drops run down to its mouth.

As the other comments, well done on the production. Is that use of the 360 camera footage to make it look like you have a 3rd person filming/panning?
