    I never noticed it until recently, but as Red realizes he has found the place Andy told him about, the soundtrack begins to use harmonica. And earlier in the film, harmonica was clearly put as a symbol of Red's hope, and he refused to play it.
    The movie is so accurate : harmonica isn't used when Red finds the letter, it's used when Red hopes for the letter, realizing he has found the place. Because it's not a symbol of happiness, it's really a symbol of hope. I'm just thankful that this kind of brilliant storytelling exists.

    My father killed himself when I was 13. I found him dead. The police came. They drug out his body. My close family and I bawled like babies having to explain it to the distant family. That night I laid on the couch sobbing. Alone. This film came on TV i. It was 1998. I was young and had never seen it before and spent the day in tears. And laid on the couch alone watching it in pain in the dark. And it took me away. It played onward and slowly I was enthralled. In my darkest day, I found my most favorite film. And after decades of rewatching it and seeing it cable channels over and over, I still always watch. I always find new meaning. As hard it was that day, this film was my security blanket after my dad had passed and maybe some of the lessons he could have taught me were gifted to me that day in another form.
    Hope.

I really hate to look like I’m self-promoting, but since I think you could benefit from it I would like to share a video. Its a matter of taste, so its something that we'll never agree on. And thats fine, different opinions are a good thing. Personally, i also rate Shawshank in my top 3 movies ever, it is amazing in everything it does.

    • @danielwilson5450
      @danielwilson5450 7 років тому

      PlacidDragon "It's a matter of taste" translates to "I can't defend my opinions so I give up with directly saying so". The film does not excel in almost every aspect. It's poorly written misery porn that preys on emotions rather than evoking them naturally.

    • @PlacidDragon
      @PlacidDragon 7 років тому +26

      When i say its a matter of taste... it is.. we like different movies, different music, different art, people's "beauty" is highly subjective, and so on. If you cant recognize that very basic fact, then i really dont know what to say.
      Your answer also showed that you are just after a fight. In the wise words of... whoever it was... "idiots will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience"... so i'll just move on, thanx :)

    • @danielwilson5450
      @danielwilson5450 7 років тому

      PlacidDragon Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and tastes, but not all opinions are equal. If you don't have a grasp on why you like something or can back it up with reason, then your opinion is shit and not worth listening to. You have give reasons why someone should bother reflecting on your opinions. Good and bad opinions don't exist, only better and worse opinions.
      You still haven't told me this movie is great or why it isn't misery porn. I'm not looking for a fight, I'm looking for a discussion. And you have yet to engage in it.

      I really hate that kind of stuff. I hate motivation and hope ever since my dad introduced it to me. His voice repeats in my head so much that he wants to change who I am. I hate how he tries to make me watch videos about never giving up and tries to believe in to try new things I know I can't or I don't want to do because I'm autistic. When I was younger, I was scared of my family dying and me being alone. I told them that if they did die, I wouldn't want to replace them because they were the only ones for me. My dad told me that he would want me to be strong and find a new family. It wasn't until I cried one day when I finally started to feel happy again. I started to feel not to search for a new family if my current one died. I felt mentally stable again. But my dad said it's okay to cry if you're happy but cry if you're sad, then something should be done about it. I swear, everything that comes out of my dad's mouth is intoxicating. I saw Pixar's Inside Out, and it taught me that it's okay to be sad. MY DAD COULD LEARN SOMETHING FROM INSIDE OUT! Other thing is that I hate movies that have a message of never giving up, Blue Sky's Robots, which is a painfully cliché film because of this. I remember when I felt suicidal that my dad only told me to get my head out of my ass instead of helping me. That just goes to show how my dad is a compassionless bastard. I like films like Pixar's Up that teach people it's okay to give up, unlike most movies which have scenes where the characters fall into despair, another one gives them a pep talk then they go save the day. This is the main reason I never want to work in the film industry. And when my dad showed me a video about what to do if you want to change the world. I never had plans to change the world, so the video my dad showed me warped my mind! It's why I try to stay away from my dad as much as possible and why encouragement now disgusts me.

    What kills it even more for me is knowing Andy and his wife had a date there... what a beautiful and perfect place... it looks almost like a painting of old. To think about them back then enjoying each other, not knowing the tragedy that would befall on both of them...
    To me, this has always been the explanation why Andy never lost hope. This day with his wife, this tree, this scenery, the way it is framed, the way the music shifts when the tree finally reveals itself... It's a beacon of hope. It's a moment when they reached for Eternity, and found it. They touched something deep which makes all of us connected.
    It is my belief everyone gets to experience those kind of moments throughout their lives. Moments which you'll always remember, timeless slices of life which will burst into your heart as vividly as ever from times to times. Andy had those moments inside him, and he knew nothing, no power in this world would ever be able to take it away.

    So many places like this in the rural midwest. Even when you grow up in small towns like that it feels special sometimes when you're alone out on some farm land like that... listening to the insects and birds, surrounded by nothing but cornfields or tree lines. A lot of places in Central Illinois look like those places in central Ohio. It's even more beautiful at night, on a clear night.

    I really want to share this to anyone, trying not to be too lengthy. Some have told me to write a book. Uhm, maybe. Leaving Ohio for a new life in Florida after a divorce and selling my home in 87 was one of the hardest things i have ever done. Ohio is home and I'm back to stay. Even though Florida was very good in so many ways (financially, business success) it was never home. After having a successful business for two and half years, I was hired in January 1990 by a national chemical company. At a restaurant show, some folks were down from Cleveland to help with the booth. One said sarcastically that the company had openings in Ohio, thinking who would ever want to leave Florida in the middle of winter. I was! A territory in central Ohio (Mansfield area) was one of them. Never been there, heard of it but said yes to the opportunity instantly, one of the best decisions I ever made. It was a 5 county area peppered with small towns as well. Driving down a hill on S.R. 30 into Mansfield for the first time (7:30 p.m. December17th 1990) and looking to the north, there were many huge lights overseeing structures i couldn't make out. Turns out it was the new Mansfield prison that had just opened as the old Prison in Shawshank was condemned. As time went on i discovered Central Ohio in the 4 years there, made friends, dated and actually got engaged (marriage never happened though) and unknowingly drove by or was actually in all of the locations where the film was shot. I must have driven by the old prison a thousand times. At that time. I never knew that Shawshank was being filmed there in 93. Life can take some strange twists. I left the chemical company that transferred me back to Ohio (I was in the Mansfield Territory for 4+ years) and went to work for one of their competitors in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 95 (another place i have never been to) and it was there when i finally had time to get cable hooked up, saw The Shawshank Redemption for the 1st time, never realizing I was in a legendary filming location. Even now I still get teary eyed watching Reds release from Shawshank, him walking the streets of Mansfield (still looks the same to this day) and especially the rock wall and the Spreading Oak that is sadly now gone due to an act of God. There are tours of the Old Prison and even though its only 1 hour from where i live now, i have never been on one. Now retired, I'll go on one but hey, I am also a Private Pilot and have never been to the Wright Patterson Aviation Museum and that location is only an hour and a half away. "GET BUSY LIVING OR GET BUSY DYING" God bless you all and the USA.

      I guess if we're sharing stories. I'm a guy from England, this film has been my favourite film for years and I'm 22 as I'm writing this. My partner is from maine...and her family owns a farm right near a little town called Buxton...might have heard of it. Andy's dream was to get out of maine, while mine is to live there and raise a family, in those fields, near sebago lake. Dreams are different for everyone, and I think that's one of the best things about this movie, we get to hold on to our dream along with Andy throughout it.

    • @cfierle
      @cfierle 2 роки тому

      The scene where Red leaves the pick up truck and walks down the road that has the Buxton sign is not far outside of Mansfield, Ohio where most of Shawshank was filmed along with some scenes filmed in Ashland , Ohio and the courthouse scene was filmed in the courthouse of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. The intersecting country roads where the Buxton sign was placed is near a small town called Bellville, Ohio. The Buxton sign ( of course ) was a prop on that particular county road outside of Bellville, Ohio, a beautiful small town.
      Hold tight to your dreams and set goals. Dreams without goals are just that. Only dreams.

    My favorite movie of all times. And this scene is my favorite. Perfection. Movies like this don't come along very often.

    God bless you all, and remember, hope is a good thing ❤️
