    authority figures seem to get away with murder all time. but how do those killings become acceptable? The philosopher Giorgio Agamben thinks about these issues with his concept of homo sacer: someone who can be killed without it being murder or sacrifice. when sovereign power is always an exception to the law, they get to create homo sacer.
    as i say at the end of the video, homo sacer is not a perfect theory. agamben is far from the only philosopher to think about biopolitics. i'd love to hear your thoughts about what he gets right and what he gets wrong. you might also think his theory is the most politically useful, even if it's not the most accurate, historically or logically speaking.

    I’m from Sudan and this has been on my mind for a while. When describing my uncle who died crossing the border after not receiving healthcare for his illnesses (hospitals were bombed and there was chaos) and i described it as “he died this morning.” And yes, no one shot him, but his death was on people’s hands. It wasn’t an accident, he didn’t die a natural death, it was preventable and taken away from him.

      Agreed. I'm a Bangladeshi Muslim and I support my Arab brothers and I'm not saying this because I'm a Muslim and biased. I'm very secular and consider myself more of an agnostic. I just think you don't have to be a Muslim to be against oppression just like you don't have to be black to be against apartheid in South Africa, or genocide of Native Americans, Vietnam etc. Just be a decent human, acknowledge what's actually happening and don't live in delusion because it's the safer thing to do. Most atrocities in history that happened decades/ centuries ago are universally considered "bad" in current times by everyone there's a lot less people who admitted it was bad during the time those crimes were being committed. Be in the right side of history right now, not decades later or centuries later and say "oops we shouldn't have done that but we're past all that now".

    As a brazillian citizen that tries her best to be aware of the state of people at least within brazillian territory, so many examples came to my head watching this video
    You had the police brutally, nazis and medical authority as examples
    But just in Brazil, there was a literal genocide of the Yanomami people, that only became present in media this year
    In the pandemic, cities like Manaus (that is located in the Amazon forest) literally had a shortage of oxygen gas for it's patients, even tho Brasil has a public health care system that should and COULD give them that
    People in the favelas (not just in Rio) are deemed "stateless" in practice, and therefore face insane police brutality casually
    There's also a whole group of "original peoples" that enter the discussion of who gets to be valuable for the sovereign society (such as quilombolas, ribeirinhos and natives)
    Crackheads and drug addicts (especially the ones living in the streets) are also deemed inhuman by probably the majority of society - they are reduced to plagues (probably even worldwide)
    Obviously, people that tend to devaluate human life through narratives such as the ones you mentioned in the video tend to be (although are not limited) the rightists

    Just rambling here to sort out my thoughts: I think the idea of homo sacer can be applied to the disabled population in the US. I studied public health in college and wrote my senior thesis on the disproportionate amount of psychological distress in the disabled people. For half of the paper I tried to explain how political and social determinants of health can be internalized. Looking back on it, my thought process was like Foucault's network. The other half was a critique of medical professionals and their schools because they can inadvertently reinforce systemic failures through the power imbalance on a personal basis. I know that was a horribly vague summary, but their power creates a state of exception which can remove agency under the guise of creating special rights. Because as you said, if you have to define human rights, they weren't inalienable to begin with. The concept of babies being homo sacer, paired with the discussion of how adults can become homo sacer if it can be justified that rights don't apply to them reminded me of how we infantilize disabled adults. Prior to this video I was only able to explain this process in terms of stigmatization and 'othering', so once again, I really appreciate you sharing this information!

    For a school project I recently read a portion of Agamben’s book, specially his chapter on biopolitics, and what I really took away was this idea of “the right to life”, which, similarly to what you said, is not really guaranteed by being born and that there actually aren’t inalienable rights. Anyways I really enjoyed this video and seeing something about homo sacer. ALSO I think that what is meant by everyone is homo sacer is something like there are so many different countries, and so many different super powers, and because there is no one big government you are always unprotected by at least one law, so it could be unpunishable to really kill anyone, if you do it the right way. But idk. Great video as always ! !

    i see this a lot in western reporting of the gaza genocide. israeli women and children are murdered, palestinian females and minors just die. all of them were murdered. say it how it is. genuinely started tearing up during your segment on palestine, it was so well said and on point and it's so heartbreaking. im part of the palestinian diaspora and to see so many people value your life and lives of your people as homo sacer, as subhuman, as not deserving of human rights, its so terrible. thank you for pointing this out. much love ❤

    Even though you described the concept as being distinct from "dehumanization" I feel like it is still that with extra steps, though I suppose a more appropriate synonym of "homo secar" would be considered as "second class citizens" because they're still treated human until, as you said so yourself, the moment that they try to exercise their rights for causes that affect them only to be denied by the "state of exception" through road-blocking laws that seek to undermine the goal of "equalizing" with other fellow citizens. Thank you for introducing us to this concept, we'll try giving it a read or listen some time later on!

    • @Nizaar1
      @Nizaar1 5 місяців тому +11

      I think you missed the point. To use the analogy of 6:42 , the difference between homo sacer and dehumanized is that homo sacer would be the ex (=no citizen), while the dehumanized would be some sort of side chick (=2nd class citizen), and the gilfriend would be a human with rights (=full citizen).

    • @Naomi-fb1ej
      @Naomi-fb1ej 5 місяців тому +11

      I would say homo sacer goes further than 'second class citizens' (which are still within the state/framework of citizenship) as it a greater critique of the state form itself. The state necessitates that there are citizens and homo sacer (non citizens).
      As Olivia mentions in the video, Agamben was heavily influenced by Arendt and her critique of the concept of universal human rights. For example, in the UN Declaration of Human Rights, rights are something states give their citizens. But by putting the state as the starting point, people had no 'right to have rights'. People like those who are born stateless, or are refugees, do not have the right to guaranteed citizenship and are exiled from belonging to any 'political' life. You can extend that to the current situation in occupied Palestine where Palestine does not have sovereign power/is not regarded as a nation and hence Palestinian people have no political rights in the eyes of the US-led international community.

    • @shimrrashai-rc8fq
      @shimrrashai-rc8fq Місяць тому

      @@Naomi-fb1ej That's a very good/interesting critique. It means that the "human rights" framework still has a hidden authoritarian backing component in that "the State giveth ..." instead of that there exists a deeper morality beyond what "THEY" tell you that always applies, like compassion. As absolute rights would make _every_ State scared.

    Fascinating stuff as always! I've watched all of the content on this channel, so now I want to find new video essayists to listen to while I work. However, the ones UA-cam recommends to me either try to be too comedic, lean too much into picking apart uninteresting outside material like TikToks, tweets and news articles, use that obnoxious form of speech and editing that makes me feel like I'm watching an AI-generated conspiracy short, or just simply don't delve very deep at all into topics. I'd like to hear about any other youtube channels that make content like Olivia, preferably ones that don't necessitate me to actually watch the videos and let me just listen instead.

    It's not terribly subtle these days. Australia has contributed to and exacerbated the issue of statelessness by implementing laws around revoking citizenship and treating stateless refugees as criminals. A High Court ruling was recently overturned here resulting in a cohort being released from 'indefinite detention' and new laws were rushed through to counter the opposition's political attacks on the government over 'security'.
    I say we abolish statelessness. And states.

    Tragedies happens every single day everywhere around the world. Tragic accidents, natural disasters, horrible deaths etc. You name it, it happens. The thing is if it isn’t within our circle we will never know about it or if they are not covered by news we wouldn’t know about it either. It depends on the coverage the media gives it if it’s going to become something big or not. Also, imagine if two exact accidents things happen to two humans, one of them is famous and the other one isn’t, the news coverage about the incident isn’t gonna be the same. One could be even in international news, depending on the amount of fame of the person, while the other might not even be covered at all. Another example with this is wars multiple wars are happening in the moment. If you asked someone they would probably only know about Ukraine and Russia, and Palestine and Russia while there’s actually currently 32 wars around the whole world. The wars are there they are happening but the coverage isn’t as broad as the wars who are all around media in the moment. Horrible stuff but it really doesn’t gets covered and most of us don’t even know about it because we live in our bubble. Back to the topic of human rights, humans right aren’t really rights if you can revoke them depending on what benefits you in a political manner. In some political struggles we have seen political leaders see the deaths of hundreds of innocent people as collateral damage or minor loses which just shows how they view life.
