It's never happened but it would have been cool if they'd dipped the swords in wax before they buried them. But, my family has a sword from the war of 1812, if I buried my father with it along side his USMC saber - you'd have a similar story and nothing religious about it.
It's not so odd in archeology Woman is buried wearing her grandmother's wedding ring Granted 300 years minus 20 For the life of the person who carried it Bout 3 generations per every 100 years Means he was buried with his great great great grandfather's weapon. Great way to signify the end of a bloodline in death
Very disappointed in the attempt at the re-creation of the Viking sword. You need to watch PBS NOVA National Geographic Society 2017 Secrets of the Viking Sword made by Rick Furrer as he hand forges a true Ulfberht Sword the way the Vikings would have made it. Much better demonstration!
Yes, the forged sword process in the Nova show was the more authentic reproduction (and fascinating to watch being made) but the method used in this story was still valid in terms of bringing the buried swords into modern context in order to understand their form, weight, balance, etc. Recall that the long sword was unique in its proportions. These models were important to create and using modern methods, tools and materials were appropriate for this experiment. Also, was it ever mentioned that the steel in either of the buried blades was Damascus forged (layered)? I don’t recall if they said so. That said, the program showing the sword being made by Rick Furrer is a “must see” if one is interested in Viking swords!
@greenspiritarts Well stated and true. I know the steel was extremely high quality. Watch the show on Wootz Steel it's the best I have seen on Damascus steel and its "secret" formula!
Awesome history and report..!
Cmon Finland, get digging!
Only thing he missed is that those pommels likely wouldn't have been solid. Which would change their balance.
What is this Yanala in the topic? Is that supposed to be Janakkala?

So it sounds like the metal metal detectors was Night Hawking.

Yes, no modern tools were used in that one.
