Unboxing and first impressions of the Cold Steel Recon Tanto, a lot of knife for the money. www.amazon.com... Amazon blade wish list: www.amazon.com...
So many outdoorsman shy away from a Tanto. I love the thick tip. It lets me pry open rotting logs to find grubs for bait on my fish lines and traps, and I don’t worry when I use it to baton with. It is a very competent carver and slicer. And you can’t deny it’s self defence capability. Overall a great addition to a hatchet/tomahawk or saw ,and two folders( one an old school trapper for skinnng small game like rabbit). I bought two. Using one as an absolute , no forgiveness beater knife. I wish I had one in Aus8
After using the SK5 Recon for 14 months going from Florida to Maine and stopping at many states in between camping and fishing, the Recon is a perfect sized, perfect outdoor companion knife! It batons better than the SRK and other knives its size because of the length and curve stout thickness out to 1/4" from the tip. It also chops exceptionally well and maintains its edge through a season of use with no sharpening. I was even able to make a bow drill fire starter with it. I have the 3v Master tanto and magnum tanto and a VG10 Srk and the ability of the SK5 is almost as good! I just got the VG10 Recon, but I lust for a 3V !
I recently bought the sk5 and then the san mai version, the sk5 i keep in my work pack and the san mai in my car. I tested how well the sk5 could chop on a 4" diameter tree, with about a medium strength chop it bit into the tree about half way. I replaced the nylon strap with a large C clip meant for the secure-ex sheaths.
Bought one 2 years ago, was my main firewood splitting knife. easy to sharpen, built very tough. The tanto part is a bit of a bitch to sharpen ( to get it not rounded whilst sharpening) but the tip is a lot stronger than the SRK version. Good holster (just talking about functionality, the military appearance is up to each to decide for themselves). Just a good basic knife to last a long time (lifetime if you can make another handle)
Waiting for stock to then order the SRK. Been looking at the tanto version as well. You mentioned you split wood with the blade. From what I have seen this seems to damage the visual appearance of the knife- ie removing the black coating- how do you repair yours assuming its getting damaged?
@@durbanmedia Oh yes the wood splitting has taken off a fair bit of coating though I don't have a need to repair it. I don't mind blades looking like they did a lot of work. Have a good one
Great tactical, all around knife! As tuff as they come. Stealthy and reliable. Bought two! One for the backpack, the other for the car... Good video btw.

Thank you, and thanks for watching.
I got mine on Amazon for $41 and change. The handle is basically Kraton
Put a spot of lube on each side of the handle where it pushes into the sheath as it goes across those grooves inside to reduce wear
what kind of lube?
Just a touch of mineral oil which I use to oil my blades on each side of the rubber material. I’ve heard Vaseline can cause material to break down.
Best value quality fixed blade on earth. Shaving sharp and built like a brick shithouse
