I think Brittany Howard also performed a legendary set on SNL.
I missed this performance, no surprise. I don't watch network TV.
This performance was one of those like GooGoo Dolls in the rain in Buffalo where the artist just gives everything they are to the audience, and the audience amplifies it back.

Man is it rare over the last couple decades to see a truly impressive performance on snl like this one.

The thing about Brandi is that aside from her insanely pure and out of this world voice with the most incredible range and nuance, she is always so, so happy after she sings a song. Her face and whole being light up in incredible joy. This is truly what she is meant to do with her life and as everyone knows, did it for little money for years and years. That is the sign of a true artist. The fact that she is finally becoming mainstream and making real money from her life's work of art, is long overdue and so well deserved. She is truly an incredible talent.
Not to mention, so down to earth! I feel like she’s your cool next door neighbor that you can have a bonfire with lol.

To add to that, singing a song from so early in her career just shows how well her music ages. The more you live, the more of a story you have to tell.
Brandi is possibly the best live performer I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. I don’t usually expect to hear the exact same vocal quality in live performances vs. studio recording, but, holy cow, she is phenomenal.

The amazing thing about her and the band is that they have always preferred to play smaller venues… I first saw her back in ‘98 at a dive bar called the Garage in Ballard, Seattle… and now 25 years later we still go see her every time she comes to Texas … we were thrilled to meet her after a show a few years ago in New Braunfels TX… my husband and I actually ran into her when the whole band was tubing/swimming in the river that afternoon…. She’s simply one of the best live performers ever!!!

The labum before last, By The Way, I Forgive You, actually did win a Grammy! I really recommend it, especially The Mother (which is a parenthood song that shines after 20+ years of only hearing With Arms Wide Open on the radio), Sugartooth (which is like an arena country song honouring someone who passed away due to an opioid addiction), Everytime I Hear That Song (which drops the title of the album), Most of All (which, personally, made me think of my parents eventually passing away) and Fulton County Jane Doe. Fantastic album.

Makes me think of my mother and how much she's helped me through some health problems I've had and how much she has spent and helped and not complained through any of it. I'm getting better. This song is what I dedicate to my mother.
Her voice is so ephemeral in that it can be both brassy and intimate in the same song, sometimes even in the same line, as with this BARN BURNER. I just LOVE watching her have fun and rock out in the loud parts, and then ease it back down to a closer and more private place for the lines that need it. I also LOVE that she allows her voice to break in certain parts, which really accents the psychological and emotional catharsis of the song. That husky tremble that drops here and there just sends shivers down my spine.
You articulated the magic of her voice and performance so perfectly! Thank you for that. I think one of the things I enjoy most about this performance is that it is both an ode to her fans and a stunning display of how much her voice has grown and blossomed over the years. Her ability to control and emote her voice has expanded exponentially over the years and it's such a privilege to hear how she has mastered such a difficult instrument.
