It’s 1:30am in Texas right now. I’m laying on the couch in tears feeling like a failure as mother. My precious son is 9. He’s autistic and he’s perfect in my eyes. He’s curled up at my feet. It’s the closest he’s come near me lately. I see so much beauty in him. I can see the world through his big blue eyes. But I also see his pain. And I see the way the world looks at him. This song. This perfectly written string of words fills my heart with hope. It feels me with power. I sing your music daily and just finished your audio book. When it was over my heart broke a bit. It was if , for awhile I was hearing a friend talk to me about their life. It made me feel less alone. I just want to say thank you for your words. For your voice. For sharing your soul with us.
Your son is a blessing and sadly others cannot see the gift God has given you" to raise and care for everyday.. He is so blessed to have you as his mother and God will give you strength in those times that it gets hard in your Lives. in the name of Jesus Christ his son .. May the good Lord always watch over you and your son ...
I have a 7 year old with the same diagnosis. He doesn't talk but boy does he love music! Don't ever give up. This life is very hard but also so beautiful!
I wish i could say it gets easier but it does get more manageable. My son is 25 you surely isn't alone. We are out here fighting this fight of faith with you. You just can't see us individually. God is in control of our lives take it day by day. Start your day with prayer throughout the day give Him thanks and end your day with prayer. God loves you and so do i. ❤🥰❤🤝🏽🤝🏽🤝🏽🙏🏽🙌🏾
I just read your story and it touched my heart. I have an 8yr old daughter with autism. I tell her how much I love her she can’t say it back. It used to break my heart until I realized she shows her love in different ways. You are a great mother the fact that you worry that you are not ,just shows that you are a great mother.
A few days ago I turned 44 years old and today I listen to this song for the very first time, and I couldn’t stop crying while I was on the train to my house... I’m latino, inmigrant, gay and old... many times I have felt invisible in a city with millions of people around me, but tonight I saw myself in your song. Maybe you never read this but today you made me feel human again for 4:58 minutes... Thank you Brandi... ♥️
Happy Birth-week, Santiago. I am 43, and recently I have been feeling old too, but I am hoping for a 2nd wind because I am about to move countries and start again from scratch. It is scary, and yes, it is lonely. Life has so many ups and downs. But I am determined to try. I was a strong, energetic and creative person when I was young and lost most of that the past few years, but I want to try and find some of that in me still. I hope you also find the best in you soon too. Warmest wishes.
I'm a School Counselor and used this video as part of a Social Emotional Lesson for Middle School this morning. Tough crowd. This video is absolutely disarming and powerful. It has a great representation of ages and cultures/skin tones that is inclusive and reaches the empathy even Middle Schoolers can access.
i agree music saved my life once i learnt its power i started karaoke the more i sang the healthier i got....my mind was stuck in the past and worried about the future but singing brought me into the moment away from worry and fear......every child should do karaoke its so much fun and the confidence it has given me will do the same for anyone......singing music to me is the greatest healer.....take care love your work
Brandi Carlile! OMG what insight what feeling. This came from the Universe. The tears won't stop flowing and I am 78 years old. Thank you for this song. 🌹🌹
I’ve been a fan since I first heard her around 2006. Since then most of the time there’s a new song I really like on the radio there’s a 90% chance it’s Brandi
Do you share it with a certain kind of client? I'm having a hard time understanding the reasoning behind showing it to them. Is it the "the joke's on them" line? Is it about bullying maybe? Or is it "I've seen how it ends". Is it to tell them it will all be okay in the end? Sorry if I come across ignorant, I just want to understand :)
I can handle almost anything but old, forgotten soldiers. Not sure why. Nobody I know or are related to ever served. There's something about carrying the inhumanity and atrocities of war so deep that you never speak of them. Now you're 80, and it makes you cry. Because you remember.... Thank you, Ms. Carlile, for including the elderly soldier. You get it. ❤
Holy crap... this comment hit me really hard. I've thought about this exact thing a lot. The men and women who go through hell in the military which many of us don't realize the toll that it takes.
Someone shared this song with me not an hour ago. It had a great impact on me. I'm a 70-mumble-year-old gay man who grew up in a small town. Let's just say that high school was not a fun time. But to those of you out there who might be struggling with how people behave towards you, know that this will pass. The mess they try to pass to you - you can reject that. You are not defined by the foolishness of others. You are not limited by their views of who you are. Reach out for your dreams and enjoy your own life on your terms. That is the greatest revenge you can have - to reach your own goals and leave the haters in the dust.
You're not alone, John. I'm 67, and grew up in the deep south. I hid it well until someone caught me with another ball player. It was a crucifixion. I left the country for a while at ages 19 to 21. This was 1976. You can do it people! Leave their petty asses behind.
This is one of the songs that takes you to another dimension. You can feel it in your skin, your bones and of course, your heart. Love every single word.
I love that she put a veteran in this video. We overlook the people who put their lives on the line for our freedom and so many times they are overlooked, and abandoned.
Well and truly! I keep falling in love with this song whenever I hear it. It's rare that I get this captivated by a song; its lyrics, music and even her voice is strong yet gentle and angelic. This girl is mighty gifted!
I have never watched her perform ..but let me tell y'all..this incredibly amazing talented woman touched the very depth of my soul with her words and chilling yet soothing voice...totally blew me away..I saw her today on Ellen as well and THAT performance was way better than on the Grammys..Ms. Brandi..I wish you nothing but all the success and happiness ..love from all.. you so deserve..you are down to earth and true..peace be with you and your wife always..
In tears just heard this song today and it’s just what I needed to hear. My parents put me though 33 years of hell. I never lived up to their expectations, it’s been 5 years now that we have spoken. I’m happily married to a wonderful man , three kids , who could ask for more ❤️ Thank you Brandi!
I get it too, I could never do right in my parents eyes. Though I married a beautiful girl, and was/am a successful businessman, with a lovely home and a fantastic son, but I never let my parents jaundice, get to me. They are long gone now, and no regrets. Sadly I lost my wife after 49 very very happy years five years ago, (cancer) so, alone now, and only have my memories and the very best thing in my life now is memories , music and song!!
This is the 4th year of no any sort of communication! She massed up my psychic as a child and yet she thinks im the problem! What hurts is that, she doesnt understand the extent of what she did affects me and i didn't confront her about! Other wise she will insinuate of me wanting an apology because yap! parents on this side of the world are not faulty to their own off springs which i understand! I left the country may be after ten yrs i will think of a possible make up that is 6yrs to go!
@@MrChrissy1r I can totally relate to you. All I have left after an accident that left me disabled, losing my wife and losing the love of my son is music. Music is a healer. Stay strong, Chris Bond!
I am 58 years old, and starting to heal old wounds others inflicted during my childhood. I am an oldest of everything (oldest grandchild, daughter, niece, cousin). I was blessed with 5 kids and (for now) 12 grandkids. This song definitely have healing properties. Listen and sometimes sing it every day to help me survive some of my most challenging days. Bless you all 🙏🏼♥️
I am your age and also carry wounds from my childhood and beyond. I find it incredibly sad that those "closest" to us are totally oblivious to our pain, the scars we carry, and the tears we hold in. I have been in self-preservation mode for so many years now that I don't know any other way. 😢
I can’t even express how important a song this is. I wish every teen who has felt rejection could hear this song and every person who has felt prejudice due to class, or any type of social difference. I sure needed this in the 1980s.
I'm 68, old white guy...in TX,....this is probably one of the greatest stories of life.....I believe. Survived a bit so much, but so many others as well. I learned a long time ago, it's the day I live in today, without going after those....the jokes on them...wish those who've struggled and are struggling peace...keep moving..forward. .it will come. I cannot imagine the challenges that so many people have overcome, living positive even after.
I came out when I was 16 in 1987 Dallas TX. I went through it and came out on the other side happy and healthy!!! So I know the importance of this song.
The way her voice breaks is so thrilling. It pierces through everything through all the bs and trauma and baggage and pokes right into your heart. I wish I heard her more on the radio, theres so much junk getting airtime instead of great artists.
When I'm in the car i usually stick to the stations that play music from before the 90s, occasionally listening to 90s if they're playing a good song. Kind of sad that you have to get on the internet and search up gems like this just to listen to it. Been a fan of Brandi since i was a kid. Always hoped and wished she'd blow up like Taylor Swift, can't say I'm disappointed that she didn't. But she does deserve much more recognition.
My son was born with Down Syndrome 36 years ago. He was laughed at. He asked me what a spastic was and what was a mongol. I asked him where he had heard these words. He said it was his ‘friends’ at school. Thank you Brandi, I am smiling as I listen to your voice as the tears roll down my cheeks. My Boy shines and he is beautiful and he is My Guardian Angel who gifts me and many, unconditional love ❤️
@@robynrains7252 Good evening from Poland Dear Robyn, thank you for your wonderful wishes. Happily William and many will celebrate his 38th birthday tomorrow. Best best wishes from John and William 🌈💜
I agree! I have been a fan of hers for years and I was so happy to hear she got a Grammy nomination for this song. She is a singular talent with a stunning voice.
I cry every single time I listen to this. I first saw her sing it at the Grammy’s. I saw the emotion in the audience as well. Amazing thoughtful beautiful song sung by an amazing woman.
As a Christian, I believe all Christians need to listen to this and hear her words. We are too judgemental and aren't the loving people the Lord commands us to be. We are to love one another. That is a complete sentence/command, there is no "except for" at the end. To those that feel judged and are hurting, you are loved just as you are. Others don't define you nor have been given any authority to judge you. Don't catch their ball of hate when thrown at you. You are worthy ❤️
This song soothes the lost and scared 12 year old version of myself that pops back into focus when I'm stressed and depressed . Truly one of the most beautiful songs.
For all of us who have been misfits, bullied or have had our self esteem blown to bits because we are different for any reason, thank you for being our voice. . This song makes me feel equally empowered and equally moves me to tears. Dayum girl. You go! So well deserved and then some. Thank you for singing the words that have stirred in my soul.
Blown away by the grounded, compassionate wisdom of these lyrics. And your voice so full of depth and strength. My teenage self would have found solace in this song; I hope the people that need it find it 🙏💙
Most of the time I am unimpressed and depressed with this world because I am different. This magic song makes me want to grab some paper towels and a bottle of windex and shine up my soul until it sparkles like a huge diamond. How restored and soaring you made me feel. With thanks from your newest fan, a 56 year old single red state misfit in Columbus, Ohio who discovered you and this song for the very first time tonight while watching you on the Grammys. My dog Belle moved off the couch and stared at me because she thought something was wrong because it made me cry. Many thanks for making me feel something. Just HAD to attempt to let you know.
You are not alone out there. Perhaps there are a lot of people who in these dark times are more like you than you will ever no. The rest can just spin...
I'm a 42 year old straight cis white male... and I cannot get through this song without 😭 Brandi Carlile isn't just the voice of our generation... she's the voice of ALL generations!
I'm headed out tomorrow from N-E Ohio to Nashville. All you Whippersnappers ... lighten up and keep planning fun things in your future. I'm going to add B C & Twins to my list. My. Birthday gift to me...a concert to hear the best ... on my 80th birthday 🤩
Brandi, I've been following you since 2006 at least, maybe earlier. It's about damn time you start getting the recognition you deserve! Your talent is beyond words and you just keep getting better. There aren't many artists as talented as you and the twins, especially the the lyrics you write. Congrats on your well-earned Grammy nominations! (I never watch but I will this time just to cheer you on.)
That's about the year that a friend put her work on a playlist for me. She's so talented--the voice, the lyrical content and melodies. And I would have watched the show if I knew she was going to be on. :-(
Found this song at a perfect time. A close friend, who I've known 16 years, walked out of my life and said I never mattered. This song is a self-love power ballad. ❤️
When I first heard this, I felt like she was singing directly to me, to that part of me that I've forgotten about, to the scared little boy who still wants someone to tell him he's okay just the way his, that it's okay to be sad and scared but that he doesn't have to be any more. Thank you, Brandi Carlile.
I so can relate, Shawn. Feel free to subscribe to my channel, please. Many songs in my playlists speak to similar feelings. Many are gems, many are under appreciated, many others range across a wide spectrum.
Cody Osborn Me too! I just took a single lyric from his performance hoping to find the original song. He really did a wonderful job!! What a song choice for a 14yr old though? Good for him!! I’m rooting for him!👏🙏
I came straight here , after seeing this INCREDIBLE singer, performing this song live , on the NBC Today Show this morning. I live in Brisbane Australia , and I have never heard of Brandi Carlile - until today . You have a new fan Brandi
HOW DID I JUST TONIGHT, DISCOVER THIS MASTERPIECE??!!!!! Wow. Life is amazing. Just when you thought you heard everything….your heart is swept up and forever changed.
Citizen Erazed I wish it got more plays on the radio. I didn’t even know who she was until the Grammy nominations and she deserves to win with this masterpiece
The first song I ever heard on a talent show where I truly preferred the original, thank you to Benicio for introducing me to the wonderful music of Brandi Carlile ❤️
Previously I'd gotten strong messages from Pinks' "You are beautiful", & Mary J. Blige (I forgot the song.) We needed a new anti-bullying and self-esteem song in these times for sure, and Benicio brought this one to light for millions.
You're feeling nervous, aren't you, boy? With your quiet voice and impeccable style Don't ever let them steal your joy And your gentle ways, to keep 'em from running wild They can kick dirt in your face Dress you down, and tell you that your place Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine I see you tugging on your shirt Trying to hide inside of it and hide how much it hurts Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them You get discouraged, don't you, girl? It's your brother's world for a while longer We gotta dance with the devil on a river To beat the stream Call it living the dream, call it kicking the ladder They come to kick dirt in your face To call you weak and then displace you After carrying your baby on your back across the desert I saw your eyes behind your hair And you're looking tired, but you don't look scared Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them
@Raheel Sidddiqui @David Cantwell No problem at all. Honestly, I just copied and pasted from another website. 🤷🏻♀️😬 The song is so very inspiring and meaningful, I wish everyone in the would would hear it, and soak up the lyrics in their hearts.
Very few artists have the ability to deliver a song that makes you feel like your heart and mind shake - Ms Carlile, never fails to make me quiver. Masterpiece.
This is just beautiful. You speak to the souls of many of us. I thank my husband every day for introducing your music to me over a decade ago. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to at least one of your songs now. Keep making music until the sun burns out.
My God Brandi is underrated! Brandi has a beautiful, unique sound when she sings. It speaks to my soul. Thank you for sharing your gift Brandi!! Let em live while they can!!
This is one of the best written and performed songs I have ever heard. I tremble in emotion and tears pour down my face every time I hear it. Truely magic.
Liebe Brandi, weiterhin viel Erfolg... 👍💫
I've heard this song play once at work. I'd heard Hold Out Your Hand many times before the Grammys but shortly after, I did hear this song play. It was a nice change. I do like it when Hold Out Your Hand plays. Most of the music is not very good and when something I enjoy plays, it's such a nice few minutes!
Omg finally I listened to her song a while back called “The Story “ just as good this woman is by far my favorite singer composer .and ty Benicio Bryant for singing The Joke on Agt....🤗😘🤗 my goosebumps are flipping out insanely
Considering that the vast majority of Elton John's songs were written by his long time lyricist, the songwriter Bernie Taupin, that's an interesting thing for Elton to have said. Elton composes the music, but it's Bernie who writes the words. The lyrics for almost all of Elton's beloved songs were written by Bernie Taupin, such as "Tiny Dancer," "Candle in the Wind," "Your Song," "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "Sacrifice," "Daniel," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," etc. Bernie's a quintessential Gemini lyricist, as is Brandi Carlile. Gemini are usually phenomenally gifted lyricists, when they're musically inclined. Other famous Gemini singer/songwriters are: -Bob Dylan -Paul McCartney -Tupac Shakur -Prince -Kendrick Lamar -Macklemore -Lauryn Hill -The Notorious B.I.G -Stevie Nicks -Brian Wilson -Danny Elfman -Lionel Richie -Sturgill Simpson -Melissa Etheridge -Noel Gallagher -Alanis Morisette -Pete Wentz And on and on...
Everything about this song I love (the word is not too strong) - the lyrics, the singing, the music, the video, the cast, and the indomitable spirit of the song. I have listened to it two dozen times or so during this past week, and I have cried in grateful response to its deeply human message every single time that I have listened to it. The music begins with a sorrowful, almost mournful tone, but as the song progresses, the music becomes first more hopeful, and then by the four minute mark, it becomes a song of victory over loss and despair, while the performances of the diverse cast are exceptional for their emotional power. It is one of the most perfect songs I have ever heard and I have decided to make it the “official song” of the website on which I am working because of the subject that it expresses with such profound sensitivity, artistry, and grace. This is the song that I would want played when the sacred day comes that we know at last that we are making our way to the far, far better world that has been the hope of everyone who has ever lived.
I'm very happy for Brandi Carlile for FINALLY getting the recognition that she deserves...has deserved for over a decade literally. I've been a huge fan since....2000 and...10? I've enjoyed each and every album she's out out. Every song. I've learned how to sing by singing her songs. My favorite of hers is I Will, from Give Up The Ghost. And I Belong To You from The Firewatcher's Daughter. And many others. Shes just amazing. But we also have to recognize the Hanseroth twins who play guitar and sing backup and help with song writing!
Thank you Brandi for letting me take part in your vision. Six years have passed just about, I was so tortured back then. But stuff like this gave me hope. Thank you for being part of my blessing here. We go on. 💗🙏🏽
Such a perfect comment. This comment needs to go viral. You should hash tag it. Can I steal it and put it on my Facebook? It’s exactly what I feel too.
Her performance at the Grammys yesterday made me tear up. I've felt so empty my whole life, alone in a world made for other people but in some point I found where I belonged. However, music is so important and what this song brings up to me is that we all deserve a space where we feel free to be ourselves, not just what we were meant to be but our true and imperfect selves.
I cry …every…single…time…I listen to this song!!!!! And the brave, beautiful souls in this video are so so so amazing!!! …each and every one of them!!! I’ve always felt so isolated, and I believe we would make a wonderful tribe, a band of beautiful brothers and sisters, if we all knew one another. Thank you, Brandi, for this masterpiece!
I'm leaving this comment here so that everytime it gets a like I will come to know that someone has finally discovered this masterpiece. Sooner or later people will discover this gem. 💖
My God....this song, her voice brings tears to my eyes every time. THIS IS MUSIC ....WIELDED......in the hands of a master. A human. A beating heart. Bravo.
Her voice is incredible. The song is incredible. Sadly bullying will never end. But bullies are wrong. Don't let them win. Be proud of who you are and live your life to the fullest how you want❤️
I’m a transgender youth in the south, texas to be exact. I just turned 18 and i’m so scared to be an adult here, it feels like everyone here hates me and who i am, what i am, every inch of me. but this song gives me hope, makes me feel like maybe, just *maybe* it’s worth it, to keep on trying and maybe get somewhere better. I’m terrified of violence, to use public bathrooms, to speak or for my binder to show. i hope it’s going to be okay, that i’ll live a long happy life where people don’t hate my identity and see me for who i am. Thank you for this song, and thank you for the hope and peace it brings me.❤️🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
I cry reading your post. I hurt for you. I am old and I know that at 18 so many things seem overwhelming. Trust me, it will get better. You will find your place. Not everyone hates. Please, just you be you.
I’m a 51 year old mom in Toronto. My daughter is a year younger than you. She’s queer and most of her friends are queer and trans. Most of my friends are as well. It enrages, terrifies, and deeply saddens me what all trans and nonbinary people are being faced with, this endless barrage of ignorance and hatred and literal violence. It’s time that the assholes perpetrating this rottenness are accountable. It needs to stop yesterday. I just want to send you some love and support, and I got a big old internet mom hug if you need one. And I’m a good listener if you ever need a friend. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m glad this song gives you some comfort. It does me, too. And I literally just sent it to my kid.
As a young queer in 2007, when Brandi's first album came out, I felt the same way.... I am so proud of her for continuing to inspire, and you for continuing to persist & persevere. Know that you are loved & that you will find your tribe soon and they will wrap you up in a big blanket of love
I have been listening to her since 2007. The Story caught my attention and I never looked back. She does not get the recognition or attention she deserves. Her voice is phenomenal. The radio doesn't give her the playtime that she deserves. It's so sad really. One of the best artists of our time
Do you really want to know where the story came from ? The eye , there is more to the story and what the songs mean .... Fire watchers daughter , turpentine, But who cares ?
@@michaellyons949 Wow...okay you have totally lost me...but like you say ....whatever.....I was talking about a song. I have no idea what you are talking about, dude. Have a good life. Maybe you should clue me into what you are actually talking about because I guess I am dense.
This powerful anthem has moved me in ways few other songs have over the past 60 years. Maybe, just maybe, one day I will make it through without getting a lump in my throat...but I hope not. Thank you Brandi for allowing us into your heart.
This song, with its pure honesty struck a chord in every single one of us that was ever treated or seen as less. Brings me to tears. Thank you for touching my heart and soul with this beautiful masterpiece.
This song is so universally applicable. Everyone knows how it is being beaten down, put in your place and not being able to shine when following your true passions. I adore this song, I just keep crying, eventhough I know the song inside and out. Her crackling voice at some parts... Man, this is good. Amazing melodies. I am in awe.
Ever so often the universe creates beautiful songs like these that move you to your core, and give you hope. No matter what you’re going through it validates your existence and that you MATTER... I can’t believe that I’m only discovering this song now but I’m grateful that I did because this song is amazing. Thank you for this gem 💎 of a song WOW blown away!!!
And the universe created a beautiful soul ❤️. Brandi is so underrated...this song saved me thru a dark time.... blessings to you from across the pond in Maine USA ♥️
Everyone who is here because of her Grammy nominations should explore the rest of her catalog. I’ve been a fan of hers for years and this recognition is well deserved.
Exactly what I’m doing. Thanks for not being one of those assholes that criticizes people for “just finally finding out about her because of the Grammys”. Should definitely win record of the year imo.
YuTu13e Everyone discovers music in different ways and at different times! Some people act like they were the first to discover every artist they listen to lol. I’ve been “late to the party” on many bands and artists who are now some of my favorites. Gatekeeping annoys me, and I’m just glad more people are discovering how amazing Brandi is!
I listen to this song regularly on my commute to work, and while I do housework it comes on my automatic playlists. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard it. I cry every time she gets to the part where she says “they displace you after carrying your baby on your back across the desert”. I’ll never come close to feeling what that must be like. I was born in America. My parents were not fleeing from anything. The rest of the song resonates with me as a disabled person, as a queer person, and as a woman. And that part always makes me just feel so much like I want to send kisses and hugs and good fortune to anybody in that situation- and so sorry that I cannot help. I hope anybody who is trying to win a better life for their children is met with victory. I’m not a religious person, but that line in this song really does make me pray to the universe that anybody who has carried their child on their back across the desert enjoys every good thing life has to offer after they end up where they want to be.
I’m looking through the comments as it plays and it’s amazing all the stories and trauma experiences people getting through it , losing it, making it, seeing through it, denying it, holding it, rolling w it, hating it, living it, indifferent. And all of it is just ok and I’m just a ball of tears right now.
I was bullied in jr. high by 2 girls that made it hell for me. I wish I’d had this song then. Their bullying really scarred me and caused much grief for me even now. Totally changed my sweet and naive nature to one of mistrust and fear of other people. This is a great song.
This song hits right in my heart I cry every time I listen to it. Even more now, we lost our beautiful niece July 2023. My sisters daughter. Let's be kind and teach kindness to our kids.
WOW. It's amazing how simple this is, yet it's so touching and SO powerful! The lyrics combined with these people who all have their own stories, who all have fought through trials of their own- is the perfect combination to remind us to love. Especially love those who are misrepresented and alone.

I have a 7 year old with the same diagnosis. He doesn't talk but boy does he love music! Don't ever give up. This life is very hard but also so beautiful!
This comment inspired tears and chills upon my skin, kind stranger, you are beautiful too, please never stop spreading love in every colorful form
I wish i could say it gets easier but it does get more manageable. My son is 25 you surely isn't alone. We are out here fighting this fight of faith with you. You just can't see us individually.
Were do you live?
You're not old...

Love that, wish we had counselors like you way back when
i agree music saved my life once i learnt its power i started karaoke the more i sang the healthier i got....my mind was stuck in the past and worried about the future but singing brought me into the moment away from worry and fear......every child should do karaoke its so much fun and the confidence it has given me will do the same for anyone......singing music to me is the greatest healer.....take care love your work

Brandi Carlile! OMG what insight what feeling. This came from the Universe. The tears won't stop flowing and I am 78 years old. Thank you for this song. 🌹🌹
Those are the tears of life, let them flow
Rest in peace, Michaela DePrince ❤❤
So young and so many challenges in her 29 yrs. Her dance was beautiful. I came to this song to say we cared ❤
I can't believe I've wasted so much time not hearing her voice. What a gift she is. A storyteller and a musician. I've found my new favorite artist!!
Totally agree!Where have I been?
Same! I just discovered her a year or so ago! How have I missed her!!!!

I am a therapist. I can't tell you how many times I have shared this song and video with clients. It is beautiful.
Thank you ❤. You know they are beautiful too.
If you haven't seen it, you should check out "Hi Ren" by Ren. It's a lifechanging experience.
Im not the therapist but id say its good to share with anyone who feels they are made to feel lesser than or feel beat down by life.

This is one of the GREATEST songs ever
Agree!
I have to agree.
I think it might be the best song this century so far.
Sounds Alright. Sounds like a song from the 70’s.
Totally agree and one of the most underrated song ever
This song is more criminally underrated than I thought 😳 thanks Benny and AGT for the introduction wow it’s beautiful 😭
Yes, me too! I cried, and I'm crying again now!
Chris 8 this singer is just Awesome 😎 what a fantastic voice xx
This song just has less views but it doesn't change the fact that this song Actually won Grammy award! People are busy into rap/hip hop shit rn:(
please everyone pass this video around!
That was my revenge on being gay in small town, I left all them behind and just lived my life
You're not alone, John. I'm 67, and grew up in the deep south. I hid it well until someone caught me with another ball player. It was a crucifixion. I left the country for a while at ages 19 to 21. This was 1976. You can do it people! Leave their petty asses behind.
I"ve seen the movie and I know how it ends. And the jokes on them.. Live your beautiful life.
This is one of the songs that takes you to another dimension. You can feel it in your skin, your bones and of course, your heart. Love every single word.
You, too? Absolutely. Peace to you!
YES!
Yes
Perfectly said
Absolutely Amen to that ❤
I love that she put a veteran in this video. We overlook the people who put their lives on the line for our freedom and so many times they are overlooked, and abandoned.
These people fought for our country so that we could have freedoms to be whatever we could be, and they should never be forgotten or cast aside.
Your freedom...? Sorry didnt know usa has a freedom problems..
Yep..,.. as an old gay geezer no one is given an exception to cruelty
And she included an immigration story too. Humanity
No, weterans did a lot of bad, Wietnam was awful,
An anthem to inclusion and acceptance. A middle finger to bullies and haters. What an amazing, haunting, powerful song and video.
It knocks me out! Omg! What a talent!
Well and truly! I keep falling in love with this song whenever I hear it. It's rare that I get this captivated by a song; its lyrics, music and even her voice is strong yet gentle and angelic. This girl is mighty gifted!
No it's not. God's a man and he's above. You're all below him the 99.999999999999999999 because you're not the 1.
Just watched her live on the Grammys. I had chills the entire time. The woman is absolutely incredible, unique, and powerful with her voice.
Wasn't it an amazing performance??? I loved all the performances but this one stood out for me.
Me too. I was mesmerized by Brandi last night.
It was awesome!
I can’t find a video of the performance to watch it 😢
I have never watched her perform ..but let me tell y'all..this incredibly amazing talented woman touched the very depth of my soul with her words and chilling yet soothing voice...totally blew me away..I saw her today on Ellen as well and THAT performance was way better than on the Grammys..Ms.
I’m happily married to a wonderful man , three kids , who could ask for more ❤️
Thank you Brandi!
I get it. My estranged father and I unexpectedly met. It went poorly and he said, "I hate you" to me
I'm so sorry to hear this had happened to you. I hope you're ok.

I can’t even express how important a song this is. I wish every teen who has felt rejection could hear this song and every person who has felt prejudice due to class, or any type of social difference. I sure needed this in the 1980s.

The way her voice breaks is so thrilling. It pierces through everything through all the bs and trauma and baggage and pokes right into your heart. I wish I heard her more on the radio, theres so much junk getting airtime instead of great artists.

My favorite part is her voice breaks.
she is an amazing vocalist!!

Thank you. I'm a Christian and I am so tired of Christians judging others. That's God's job, not ours. Love is our job! Unconditional..no exceptions.
It is easier to see someone else's sin than our own.
This song soothes the lost and scared 12 year old version of myself that pops back into focus when I'm stressed and depressed . Truly one of the most beautiful songs.

You're feeling nervous, aren't you, boy?
With your quiet voice and impeccable style
Don't ever let them steal your joy
And your gentle ways, to keep 'em from running wild
They can kick dirt in your face
Dress you down, and tell you that your place
Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine
I see you tugging on your shirt
Trying to hide inside of it and hide how much it hurts
Let 'em laugh while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
And the joke's on them
You get discouraged, don't you, girl?
It's your brother's world for a while longer
We gotta dance with the devil on a river
To beat the stream
Call it living the dream, call it kicking the ladder
They come to kick dirt in your face
To call you weak and then displace you
After carrying your baby on your back across the desert
I saw your eyes behind your hair
And you're looking tired, but you don't look scared
Let 'em laugh while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
And the joke's on them
Let 'em laugh while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
And the joke's on them
Thank you for taking the time to write that down I for one appreciate it.

I'm here as Elton John said, of any song he could wish he had written, it was this one.
Has to be the ultimate compliment of all time for an artist.
Well it took me a lot longer but he led me to this and I'm so appreciative of the posts about those featured I am learning.
Omg finally I listened to her song a while back called “The Story “ just as good this woman is by far my favorite singer composer .and ty Benicio Bryant for singing The Joke on Agt....🤗😘🤗 my goosebumps are flipping out insanely
Did he really say that? I love this song 😭😭😍😍
Other famous Gemini singer/songwriters are:
-Bob Dylan
-Paul McCartney
-Tupac Shakur
-Prince
-Kendrick Lamar
-Macklemore
-Lauryn Hill
-The Notorious B.I.G
-Stevie Nicks
-Brian Wilson
-Danny Elfman
-Lionel Richie
-Sturgill Simpson
-Melissa Etheridge
-Noel Gallagher
-Alanis Morisette
-Pete Wentz
And on and on...

❤❤
I could listen to this song a thousand times and have the same reaction as if it was the first... ♥️ The song literally touches my soul.
That’s because it hits the very heart of justice. Everyone should live with the compassion this song conveys.
I'm pretty sure this is actually the greatest song of all time.
👍🏻 agree❤
Her performance at the Grammys yesterday made me tear up. I've felt so empty my whole life, alone in a world made for other people but in some point I found where I belonged. However, music is so important and what this song brings up to me is that we all deserve a space where we feel free to be ourselves, not just what we were meant to be but our true and imperfect selves.
cannot agree more.
Beautifully said. Thank you. You are not alone!
Mrs Brightside you are wonderful
I cry …every…single…time…I listen to this song!!!!! And the brave, beautiful souls in this video are so so so amazing!!! …each and every one of them!!! I’ve always felt so isolated, and I believe we would make a wonderful tribe, a band of beautiful brothers and sisters, if we all knew one another. Thank you, Brandi, for this masterpiece!
I'm leaving this comment here so that everytime it gets a like I will come to know that someone has finally discovered this masterpiece. Sooner or later people will discover this gem. 💖
Thank you for the video: Directed by Danny Clinch
My God....this song, her voice brings tears to my eyes every time. THIS IS MUSIC ....WIELDED......in the hands of a master. A human. A beating heart. Bravo.
Beautiful comment. Thank you. God bless you.
❤
Be happy with who you are ❤
As a young queer in 2007, when Brandi's first album came out, I felt the same way....
One of the best artists of our time
Why would the story be of importance?
@@michaellyons949 Her song The Story caught my attention. That is the importance. That's the first song I ever heard from her. Get it?
Do you really want to know where the story came from ?
The eye , there is more to the story and what the songs mean ....
Fire watchers daughter , turpentine,
But who cares ?
@@michaellyons949 Wow...okay you have totally lost me...but like you say ....whatever.....I was talking about a song. I have no idea what you are talking about, dude. Have a good life.
Maybe you should clue me into what you are actually talking about because I guess I am dense.
@@michaellyons949 im curious so you should politely explain
This powerful anthem has moved me in ways few other songs have over the past 60 years. Maybe, just maybe, one day I will make it through without getting a lump in my throat...but I hope not. Thank you Brandi for allowing us into your heart.
This song has become one of my all-time favorites. The meaning, the music, her voice, the lyrics, the talent - simply amazing.
TY Brandi for this song.
When Brandi sings this, God is speaking.
And the universe created a beautiful soul ❤️. Brandi is so underrated...this song saved me thru a dark time.... blessings to you from across the pond in Maine USA ♥️
Everyone who is here because of her Grammy nominations should explore the rest of her catalog. I’ve been a fan of hers for years and this recognition is well deserved.
yaaasssssssssss
Exactly what I’m doing. Thanks for not being one of those assholes that criticizes people for “just finally finding out about her because of the Grammys”. Should definitely win record of the year imo.
YuTu13e Everyone discovers music in different ways and at different times! Some people act like they were the first to discover every artist they listen to lol. I’ve been “late to the party” on many bands and artists who are now some of my favorites. Gatekeeping annoys me, and I’m just glad more people are discovering how amazing Brandi is!
Ashley Marlow same, I’ve been on both ends.
That is also one of my favorite lines in this miraculous song!
Sorry you went through that. Hope you've been feeling better.🙂
I am so very sorry about this. You deserved so much better than what you were given.
One of the great artists of our time. How fortunate are we to have Brandi Carlile?
This song hits right in my heart I cry every time I listen to it. Even more now, we lost our beautiful niece July 2023. My sisters daughter. Let's be kind and teach kindness to our kids.
This is the America we fight for. This is the America we grieve for. This IS America! What a beautiful gift!
TheBuch4 Well said! Well said!
Amen
There are NO words for the way her voice stirs my soul .
So thankful for her life and her gift! More more more ..please !
WOW. It's amazing how simple this is, yet it's so touching and SO powerful! The lyrics combined with these people who all have their own stories, who all have fought through trials of their own- is the perfect combination to remind us to love. Especially love those who are misrepresented and alone.
I'm really struggling in life, but this song keeps me going ❤
