Can anyone help me out: i wanna get the 27“ 8core i mac. I would like to upgrade it to the 10 core processor or upgrade the graphics to the 5700xt 16Gb. Basically I can‘t afford doing both. So i gotta make a decision. I mainly use it for musicproduction, some Illustrator stuff and some hobby film cutting. I will keep the machine until it’s dead in about 10 years or so from now on.... So i want something longlasting that is still well useable in 5 to 6 years... So any suggestions?Thnx!
wonder if he meant.. like its the big 27 inch.. but its the base model lol.. i said that too when i got my 2010 27in model.. i told someone i got the base model of the big boy imac
I like not having a new design because I scared that the redesign will remove the user upgradable ram. And then you stuck paying the insane ram prices from Apple.
Raiden you’re not a fool if you can’t wait a year to get a new computer and need one. And if all you care about is the design then you don’t really need one
I’m expecting mine today. Got the exact specs. For those asking how he received it so fast, Apple ships on the same day you ordered, depending on the time you order and you’ll receive the desktop in two business days.
My biggest concern with this new iMac - vs the iMac Pro/Mac Pro - is that it's going to crank the fans to the max to deal with thermal overload. I want a quiet machine, esp. for video editing. Can you tell us how quiet it is in daily and heavy app use?
My brother had a 2007 iMac 27” (or maybe a bit smaller?) and even that old design was beautiful :) I’d love to have an iMac but sadly I don’t have enough space for it right now! I’m kinda stuck with just having MacBooks (which are too expensive for my budget currently to upgrade) and a Mac mini
Mine comes tomorrow. I already have 32GB of OWC RAM to install in addition to the 8 it comes with. Can't wait. $200 less than my original order since SSD now comes standard, too!
It's so nice that my iMac 5K 2020 Big Sur shares "Screen Sharing" with my MacBook Pro 17" 2009 El Capitan by Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. I can work both MacOS with the old and new apps on iMac 5k 27" BIG desktops even though some apps only work for old computers. It works very well when I setup the connection correctly for both Macs.
Seriously planning to buy one now, waited a year to finally get an iMac 27. Just a question is the education discount only works for college student? How about in highschool?
Great job on being on the bleeding edge. I think you are the first youtuber to get one. Mine is on its way but us common folks have to wait about a week to 10 days. Oh by the way your previous video really helped drive home the point that I should pull the trigger on this one.(at 4am no less ) I am using a 5 year old macbook pro and really need the power and screen real estate for projects.
I thought about waiting to get the iMac. But I made an excellent choice to get the MacBook Pro 16” 2019 model this past few months. I love it. Coming from MacBook Late 2008 model. It’s been over 11 years until I finally upgraded. Best choice. All because I’ve been watching your videos and I finally got my laptop
I am definitely planning on getting one of these new 2020 iMacs but i'm not so sure on whether to get the standard glass option or the Nano-texture glass option. Does the Nano-texture glass make the display less sharp compared to the standard glass? Whats your opinion and which one would you get or prefer?
True, though I believe they come pre-packaged. If he'd chosen any customization other than the preset specs, he wouldn't have received the computer in the mail so soon :)
Yeah, I just ordered the same machine and did the $30 keyboard with number pad upgrade. ETA for delivery is one month out. Yikes! looks like i'm in for a long wait.
Just got this Sunday my first Mac computer. Ordered from apple store online and received it 2 hours later. I did not know they delivered that quickly. So far I really like it and am happy that I can upgrade ram myself.
Hey Gary, When you were running the Cinebench 4 test, you commented that you could hear the fans kick in. How loud were they? Is it too loud for audio production?
Wow how did you get yours already?? So pretty hilarious, I placed an order a couple weeks ago for a new iMac 27” but several times had to cancel the order because I realized I made a mistake with the spec like not getting the SSD or Vega 48 and also not getting 8 GB of RAM so I can upgrade later. Well I must’ve freaked the system out because I had to wait for it to reset due to me using the education store and since placing my current order July 30th, I saw today my order was on hold and contacted support. To my surprise I found that my build has been upgraded to the new 10 core processor, Radeon Pro 5700, and my at the time upgraded 512 GB SSD is now standard so my order price actually goes down. I must have an iMac guardian angel or something 😅
Thank you for the unboxing. You can choose the keyboard with numbers keypad when you order the new iMac. You need to click where it says English and choose from the list.
Hi Gary, First, I really enjoy your videos! Second, I'm giving serious consideration to the new 27" iMac but I have a couple questions and if you don't mind, I'd like your opinion. Most of my work involves using a couple of Adobe products (Dreamweaver and Photoshop) as well as FCPX. Of course like almost everyone else, I seem to perpetually have at least six or seven browser tabs open. Given this, I'm assuming the "top line" new 27 would be the best for me. What would you recommend in terms of the processor and RAM? I'd like to get 64 GB or RAM but $1K is insane. Where do you buy your memory upgrades from? Hoping to see a RAM upgrade video on the new 27 and hopefully you can address these questions. Thanks and keep the great videos coming!
FYI Everyone, at the end of the hardware configuration (before the preinstalled software options) you can choose your keyboard language in a standard magic keyboard or for £30 extra (I’m in the UK) you can have a numeric keyboard in any language
One good reason to get this iMac is because it is the last of its series which is the most refined with all the bugs ironed out. This is Apple's penultimate intel iMac. I'm excited for Apple Silicon but I'm probably gonna skip a generation or two before I jump into fray.
Very entertaining, thanks for the unboxing. I'm thinking about getting this iMac now. I just wish i could use it as an external monitor for my work PC so i didn't have to have a separate monitor.
I don't know about the most current versions of OS for Mac, but one thing that peeves me with the Magic Mouse is that the stupid software waits till the mouse battery is almost dead before the software tells you it's time to recharge. To me, that's pretty stupid.
The Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad is a $30 BTO option. On the order page ("Customize Your iMac" page), click "Change" below the line that reads "Magic Keyboard - US English" and select: Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English + $30.00 The magic keyboard with keypad by itself is something like $130 or so. (Apologies if this was already mentioned.)
You can opt for the Keyboard with the Numeric Keypad. Another advantage to the I-Mac (Intel) is that you can run Windows on it, via Bootcamp or Parallels. Great for those who need to use Windows and love the Mac. I love the 27 Inch 5K screen size and that I can add more ram myself. It is Iconic. For mobility, I would also get an I-Pad Pro, which you can side car with Illustrator and Photoshop or any other app, and have a touch screen experience or take it with you on the go.
Always love your videos. Regarding the unboxing, if you just place it down on the desk upright, the box front folds down and the polystyrene comes off easily in situ. You then don’t have to wrestle with it face down. Watching you do it was highly entertaining but the Apple employee who designed the box must have been like 🤦♂️. Ha!
The main issue I have with iMacs is its cooling system so hearing you mention how the fans kick in is getting me worried again. Especially now that HDDs are gone, you'd think Apple would use that space to improve the inside design specifically for that purpose. That is the main reason I have been holding off buying a new iMac. Being in audio production, fan noise is just out of the question for me after a very bad experience with my (mid 2011) 27" iMac (SSD + HDD) even before my 6970M graphics card broke down...
Do the fans kick in when using the apps (other than benchmarking in Cinebench)? Have you tried using any video editing software to see if it stays silent?
Do Macs automatically start the Spotlight indexing process, potentially reducing your benchmark score? I hear some people say you get lower scores until the indexing is done. That is why the range of scores on Geekbench are vast for the same spec. Thanks.
Cool review! I’m considering buying the same one but with a 2TB SSD for my recording studio. My 2012 iMac 🖥 thunderbolts fried last week. Would love to wait for the M1 iMac but the compatibility will take to long for my software. Quick question: Have you noticed any loud fan noise after having used your New iMac for some months now? Thanks!
2 days ago I made an in-app purchase in a game, and there was an error and the item was not received. And then Apple refused to refund. How can the Apple staff refuse it? I'm waiting for the answer to the 2nd report now.
Hey 👋 Can u help me in selecting the best between these two ? MacBook Pro 15 inch retina mid 2015, 2.8GHz Quad core i7 ,16gb Ram , Intel Iris pro 1536 graphics , 512gb SSD ,cycle count 300 , macOS Catalina 10.15 Or MacBook pro 15 inch retina Mid 2014, 2.5GHz Quad core i7 ,16gb Ram ,Nvidia GeForce GT750M 2GB Iris pro 1536MB ,512 GB flash storage , cycle count 226 , macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Both are same price here in Dubai. Do you think is better to buy the MacBook 13” with the i7 10th 32 ram 1 tb or 16” the i9 2,3 ghz option with the 8gb 5500M and 1tb? For university to study an engineering but also at home(programming). Which should I buy? Both have the same price.
how did u get more score on cinebench than my gaming pc with a 9th gen core i9 also I thought 10th gens had half the performance of the 9th gen identical cpu
Kinda upset as they allowed me to place an order for sales tax free on july 30th for the old iMac but then it was going to be shipped October 15th and then placed on hold to only have to cancel my order...
First time here - great video! I have a 21.5" late 2015 iMac with 1TB of storage (still have 500 GB available). I am a graphic designer/photographer and I constantly have Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop open at the same time. I can barely use this computer anymore because it has become so sluggish. I've decided to purchase this 27" updated iMac but am trying to figure out what I will need to handle these programs as well as editing large photographs. When it comes to tech specs - I'm clueless! Do I need the 10 core vs. the 6 core, how much ram (yay for being able to upgrade and thanks for the link to what you're upgrading to), should I spend the extra $200 to upgrade to 1TB of storage? I want to get this right! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!! -Michele
Interested to see you actually do work and show us what this thing excels at. Benchmarks are nice but I want to see workflow and real world benefits of this machine.
Hi Everyday Dad! I have the same 27 inch model as you ordered and have a 64 gb two stick Ram upgrade kit for it. Your opinion: Since, I am an old guy just getting started in 4k editing with Final Cut, along with LR for raw stills, will this model as configured swing it, or should I reconsider and get the 8 core 10 gen model with the 16 gb video card option? I am interested in how you model handles 4k rendering. Thanks and keep doing a great job ... I recommend your channel every chance I get.
Hi, I am having, 27Inch Retina 5k Display, 3.8 GHz 8 CORE 10TH Gen i7 Processor, 40GB RAM, 8GB VRAM,1 TB SSD, 10 GB Ethernet Port, Trackpad 2, Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English. Can you suggest me an UPS for the above iMac? How to calculate the UPS Voltage requirements for using the iMac.
Ryan Lennox-Bradley on iOS I’m seeing it right under Magic Keyboard - US English. It says change. If you’re using the Apple Store app, click on Magic Keyboard - US English. Both will show a list, first for the non-numeric keypad one followed by the numeric keypad options.
Very impressive Cinebench score for this upgrade! I have the 2019 27" iMac, like you I have the base model of the 3rd tier with the 3.7GHz i5 3 core, 512 blade, Radeon 580X 8GB and 40GB ram. My Cinebench score is 2,420. 2,000 points additional is a big amount. i7 was not available last year and I didn't want to deal with heat throttling of the i9, so mine was the fastest i5 available.
steady as she goes that's expensive one of the smallest keyboards for a desktop i have seen helps when its the right way round of Couse didn't think the keyboard was wireless got my del laptop 4k screen attached to my 4k 75 inch tv icore 9 processor with 32 gbs worth of ram and 1 terabyte internal hard drive SSD and a 5 terabyte external drive as well mines the del gaming laptop and cost me £2390 last year
Yes, I am aware this is last years box for the iMac. Maybe they are reusing boxes this year because these are definitely brand new iMac specs.
The Everyday Dad I saw you on Greg’s stream
You could have upgraded to a number keypad for 30 dollars. It’s under the language choices when you are upgrading it on the Apple website
Man, I got my new iMac last week! Should I exchange it for this one!?! Now I have to research this! What do you think?

Johannes Simmer For music production take the more CPU cores i9. Fore the film cutting the graphics card helps.
“Top of the line, base model.” I love that lol
Yehh 5500xt is definitely more "base" than "top"

I really want to see a design refresh, I have a 10 year old iMac and from the front you can’t tell it’s any different!
Me too, like the iPad design but on a giant iMac would be amazing.
I like not having a new design because I scared that the redesign will remove the user upgradable ram. And then you stuck paying the insane ram prices from Apple.

Is this iMac worth buying still at Christmas

I've decided to purchase this 27" updated iMac but am trying to figure out what I will need to handle these programs as well as editing large photographs. When it comes to tech specs - I'm clueless! Do I need the 10 core vs. the 6 core, how much ram (yay for being able to upgrade and thanks for the link to what you're upgrading to), should I spend the extra $200 to upgrade to 1TB of storage? I want to get this right! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!! -Michele
Yes, get the 1 TB SSD, you won’t regret it
My old 2012 iMac won't even play 4K video let alone edit it and now can't have the OS upgraded anymore. How does this 2020 unit handle 4K editing?
It’s so heavy, so heavy, he says with a straight face wearing a superman outfit 😬😁
Only joshing. Great video.
Like to see the new dell xps 13 2020 in show. So we can see a comparison with the macbook pro 13?
the XPS 15 competes more with the MacBook Pro 13 because of the hard drive specs.
I'm sure this is a major upgrade from my 2012 iMac
I don't know how I feel about those chunky bezels haha. Nice work lately man!
Compare the ipad pro 2020 to this in video editing and rendering speed!
Interested to see you actually do work and show us what this thing excels at. Benchmarks are nice but I want to see workflow and real world benefits of this machine.
Are you going to try to use the the 8gb of ram work with premiere pro? Congrats again on getting it so fast :)
This is a real life unboxing, not the artificial smooth unboxings we usually see on UA-cam.
Hi, I am having,
27Inch Retina 5k Display, 3.8 GHz 8 CORE 10TH Gen i7 Processor, 40GB RAM, 8GB VRAM,1 TB SSD, 10 GB Ethernet Port, Trackpad 2, Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - US English.
Can you suggest me an UPS for the above iMac? How to calculate the UPS Voltage requirements for using the iMac.
MKBHD probably received it a month earlier.
Program & Chill LOL
Don't tell anyone ... MKBHD has a new Apple ARM model in the trunk of his Tesla.
For $30 you could’ve gotten the numeric pad keyboard in the config 🤷🏻♂️
Ryan Lennox-Bradley on iOS I’m seeing it right under Magic Keyboard - US English. It says change. If you’re using the Apple Store app, click on Magic Keyboard - US English. Both will show a list, first for the non-numeric keypad one followed by the numeric keypad options.
"Everyday PC dad here"
Hopefully you're doing a camera video soon :)
What light source and microphone are you using to film this video? Thank you!
PLEASE PLEAE run Geekbench 5, CPU and GPU.
