You can replace the cord with Paracord and not only is it thicker, it holds a little more length because there is extra space on the spool of the Harbor Freight dog leash. You can also tighten the spring for the extra length of Paracord when you replace it. Works perfectly!
Just pay attention to where the spring goes in the slotted post that the spool spins on because as soon as you remove the spool, the spring will unwind. All you have to do is find the flat part of the spring in the middle, slide it into the slot, and rewind the spring as tight as you want.
