Pacific Northwest Truffle Hunting! December Whites and Blacks

- Опубліковано 29 гру 2024
- Truffles are a kind of mushroom that grow underground and are a delicacy, and they can be hunted with trained dogs. In this video we go into the woods with a couple of trained dogs (Loki and Penny) to discover wild black and white truffles. It wasn't really known that we even had culinary truffles in America until a couple of decades ago, and they're starting to get popular.

If you’d like to dive a little deeper you can sign up for the 3 part intro to mycology course at the Olympic College in Bremerton. This is a non-credit class for personal enrichment. Aaron instructs the class in person, which covers what fungi is, how it grows, and its relationship to the world around it. The second class covers introduction to wild mushrooms and mushroom identification, and the third class goes over fungi cultivation and the history of mycological sciences and taxonomy. There is usually a foray into the woods for students who have attended the 3 classes. The classes are only offered in person right now, but they may be made into an online version soon. We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

I lived on Vashon. I’ve got these in my yard under the trees.
My goodness the island is calling me home, never was a mushroom hunter on the island growing up. As I got older off the island I got into mushroom hunting. I can't believe their getting Oregon white truffles and even some black ones. How long you been on the island, graduated in 72, Wayne of Bill and Wayne the Jones boys....haha!
Later, just had to reply to an islander!
@ I have an old dear friend who lived on the rock actually had her degree in mycology she had an oyster nurse log in her forested property. She would often bring us some oyster mushrooms and she was definitely qualified to identify them. I often see the most stunning scenery there. My folks volunteered at Dramadock, and my dad served as a Rotarian there. He’s passed now but he absolutely loved Vashon. It’s sad they don’t have any adequate health clinics tho, must be really difficult for them. My brother still lives there. I’m farther north island now. I served as a visiting nurse on the island so I feel sorry for those who need healthcare. Hopefully something will pan out. 🤷🏼♀️
Recently the fire department has hosted a home visit urgent care. It's very new still but there is a location now for a new clinic/ urgent care. Still easier to go off Island for most healthcare though @@islandbirdw
I find the occasional white truffle in my back yard, which is always surprising. I leave them alone if I can. It makes me happy to know they're out there doing their thing.
Penny is such a darling. She loves to find the truffles. Sweet baby girl.🙏🏾❤😊
She loves treats
Awesome puppers you are blessed with there! Worth every treat just to have em out there with ya's...truffle harvest being the bonus!
Amazing! Love those dogs!
I look forward to hearing more about truffles this winter.
Super cool day out! The pups did awesome 🍄🐶
I live in Oklahoma. I was at a spot where id go often to find morels, & other mushrooms. I was walking down a path & seen a nice smothe rock sticking partially out of the ground. I dug it up with a stick & seen another close by. When i dug them out, they were not rocks. I figured out it was a white truffle. But i couldn't find enough information to know if it was edible. My roommate cleaned out the frig & threw out my truffles & crown tip coral mushrooms.. the truffles smelled like sulfer. I found out later both mushrooms were edible. I was so mad lol.
@@wamlartmuse17 there are tons of types of truffles, and although most of them are edible, not all of them are yummy for humans. Other animals do you consume them however. Maybe go back to the same spot and look around.
@mushroomwonderland1 I thought about going back as I was watching your video lol.
I definitely have
truffles in my yard due to all the squirrel holes. My Sister has a lil pug that has worm radar, I definitely think he could be a future truffle dog!
@@nessao3396 he definitely could!
I found something that looked just like the white truffle last year but it didn't have much of a smell. Great vid.😄
@@tblazy3463 when they are premature they don't have any scent. Maybe it was one of them.
Wow! Nice work! That looks like fun.
Here is an odd question for you... I have found "giant" native earthworms in the coastal mountains of Oregon that can grow to more than two feet long, and I am wondering if you ever run across similar native earthworms in that area.
there actually aren't native earthworms in the americas, they are all introduced
Wow. That's pretty sweet, how easy it is for the dogs to find them. I thought they were always farther below the surface.
@@trevorsherman3993 dogs can smell them pretty easily, but it all has to do with their level of distraction, or work ethic. Loki wants to run wild and it takes him a while to chill enough to focus on what he's doing. Some of them can be a bit deeper, and the black ones can be over a foot deep sometimes.
Sixth to the like button this is awesome you guys are hard to beat these days to that like button. THANKS AGAIN AARON MUSHLOVE!
We’ve been finding them since October. Hope it continue to be a great winter!
Absolutely fun! Perhaps you would consider leading a truffle foray?????? Would love that!
@@msdawntreader That's a bit more tricky, the spots are pretty secretive, I think @truffledogco company might offer forays!
@@mushroomwonderland1 thanks. If you get an inspiration let me know!
My dog would dig up little balls all the time in the forest. I always thought it was something feces, thinking back on it I am sure some were truffles.
@@dannyschaible7112 That's cool!
The Great Chocolate lab will always been ready for treats!!
@@samuelsterling1532 for sure. I also have a lab that would probably kill himself if he could eat as much as he wanted.
Yay Loki! ❤
Another awesome video
@@janmiebebekian7862 thank you!
Thank you for sharing
All you need is a doug fir stand thats soggy and is sprouting ferns. So is your truffle friends from Washington state?
Mmmm truffles 😋😋😋
Back east I have found many truffles, in spots where the squirrels were digging, although not edible they were fun to find...
What a great activity for you and your bird dog when you're not out on birds
Awesome cool
Husband found a big black truffle by the trail this morning, its almost like a size of a tennis ball.
I would love to buy those if you ever make your way to Bellingham!
_Tuber oregonense_ seems to be about $20-$25/ounce fresh. Certainly more valuable than many mushrooms in the PNW.
Such a deal to trade liver snacks for truffles!😂
If I had a truffle dog, I'm sure I have truffles on my property. I see squirrel or critter sign all over this time of year
Wonder if we have them in Wisconsin 🤔
Found one! ✨
Can they be cultivated? Do they grow under other trees?
@@jamesalanstephensmith7930 some people have successfully inoculated some trees with certain truffles, but not these particular ones.
Fyi, I just watched a video from a Vet saying not to give pets too much liver. It can be fatal eventually.. sorry, I'm just spreading the word. Cool video!
Liked, shared and subscribed!
Do the truffles taste good sautéed?
My parents have acreage Whidbey Island and I’ve seen these truffles.
@@tinaknutsen they will lose their flavor if they get cooked. That's why they're good used as a topping, shaved or grated on your favorite dish. It really is the volatile organic compounds that comprise the odor / flavor. The truffles themselves actually don't have much flavor at all.
❤Mushroom Wonderland~ is it possible to spore print truffles for propagation?
@@ktharamseye2197 That's a whole can of worms. They are mycorrhizal, meaning they have to germinate on the roots of trees that are mature enough to be suitable hosts, they have to hook up with that tree and then hook up with another fungus of their type and a compatible mating gender, only then might they produce some fruiting bodies. The entire inside of a truffle is completely packed with spores, so they don't really drop spores in the sense of making a spore print, but a small slice of the inner gleba contain hundreds of thousands of spores.
This is sooo cool, I live in the north bend area, 3 gen, and would love to do this. picked wild mushrooms the day I could walk. How you train your dog to do this? Our old dog long gone use to dig up under, to lie down, our xmas trees and dug a big one up.
First Pink Pan inoculated cannabis sprout: Super Silver Haze.
I had to use an oldie but goodie, using a knife to cut air channels, to the bottom of the container. Some parts of the growing medium, already felt as though I was cutting through a solid mass. Old tricks (technique), still keep the cannabis coming.
The added difficulty, experimenting multiculture containers, planted rooted ginger (deep), then garlic and cannabis atop. Throughout the containers, hybrid fungal cultures are colonising, as well as having been inoculated from the top, using Pink Pan spores (hopefully inoculating cannabis spouts as well).
The 90-degree-stiped Pink Pan inoculated, garlic shoots developing sideways. No cannabis sprouts yet, I may need to use, an alternate method, for germinating the cannabis seeds. Then again, it is always slower to sprout seeds, from the growing medium or soil.
Very controversial title there Aaron!! Merry Christmas!
@@topfeedcoco 😂
You should be using a net bag to hold those. Were you born here?
They don't release spores like other mushrooms so you don't need a net bag.
Love it. Im in Northern California Redding area and would love to tag along on a truffle outing. We have Douglas Fir here so must have truffles?
No, they don't grow below OR
Hmmmm I'm pretty sure I know where you are but it's got me wondering which forest...
I'm to the NNW of you up in the SJ Islands - we certainly have the Doug Fir and sword ferns, but it's quite a bit more overgrown.. Do we stand a chance finding any without a truffle dog?
I can’t say I ever found any in my ten years up there but I also didn’t have a truffle dog either 😅
@@MamaStyles Do you ever locate the truffles yourself just by smell?
@@northwestsparrow You can do it, but you have to be prepared to spend a whole day flat on your belly with your face no further than 1/16th of an inch off the ground. You also need to put earplugs in, because it will heighten your sense of smell... good luck!
@@drewpknutz1410 Lol, thanks for the tip!
@@drewpknutz1410 wow that's interesting!
Certainly hope they taste better than my tampanensis sclerotia 🤢
@@Spindoctorate34 they definitely do.
At 3:40 - nuts
I have mini pigs! Juliana pigs were bred for truffle hunting! My son got some so I will be training two to hunt. Anyone interested in ordering one, I only breed if I have homes for them.
@@kathrynrodlun8514 that is so cool. Please report back if You train them to hunt truffles. I'd love to see that!
❤Bro, I clearly need to get a dog…does anybody lease out truffle dogs?🐕😉
@@ktharamseye2197 😅 I don't think anyone does, but yes you need a truffle dog! Haha
What kind of dogs are they? Can any dog be trained to sniff out truffles?
I would fight a squirrel for truffles to add to my larder! Ok no I wouldn’t, they’re to quick, crept that one i accidentally picked up while pit lamping matsutake’s last month… wish I had a truffle or to so I can try and train my fat cat to find them as he loves coming picking with me and will do anything for treats! Anything we can make an exchange with from my coastal part of the great bear rainforest? 😁
Pigs can do that too!
Send e mail will show you real tracks. And more.
