The Scene from "Quantum of Solace" is not in that building you´re showing, where the "Club Union" use to be at; It is actually from a building at the French Quarter location!. It is the building you pointed out and you called it "The French Plaza" at the right hand side of our screens,(min 8:11) just at the end of the wall that use to protect the city. ( White Building and blue Awnings!!! min 8;37) (and your wife is correct, The French Quarter is right where you where standing, and that rooster at the top of the Obelisk is the French Symbol) The French Embassy is also located at that same location. Great video!! Thank you for showing Panama!!!
@@KNowWhat_KathyandScott It certainly looks that way. Thanks for the Panama hat tour as well. I was given one “Made in Ecuador” by a friend just before I came here. I don’t wear it to often.
I lived in San Felipe (Casco) starting in 2008. Back then the restoration was just beginning and the place was an uber dangerous slum, basically an extension of Chorillo right next to it. Chorillo to this day is still the most dangerous part of the city. You may have noticed cops all around the edges of Casco whose only job is to stop happy, wandering tourists from accidentally strolling into Chorillo and being lucky to get out alive after being mugged and robbed in broad daylight. I bought my place on Plaza de la Catedral in 2007 and remodeled it with a 1%, 30 year mortgage guaranteed by the UNESCO World Heritage Fund (we all did) and after living there for 10+ years sold it in 2019 for $1.2 million. Mi gusta gentrification :)
@@KNowWhat_KathyandScott before expatriating to Panama I sold my house in Bellaire Beach FL for $875K after paying $155K for it 5 or 6 years earlier. I'm a very saavy investor. After careful analysis using my own self devised method I invested in foreign debentures and B- rated munis, primarily in South American emerging economies ...... and over a 10 year period I lost about 70% of everything and am as of today spending my usual first week of the month waiting on my damn Social Security retirement check Oh well, it was fun being a rich guy. Ain't life funny that way? All the best, and don't forget to enjoy every sandwhich, ya never know if there'll be another tomorrow
That is called "Gentrification". El Casco Viejo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The buildings are being restored to their original beauty but because there were people living there prior and don't want to live you see that some of them are still in bad shape with people occupying them.
Yes, Gentrification is well underway, and it looks to us that Casco Viejo’s restoration has been significant, perhaps 80% complete. We’ve seen that many of the cities and towns we’ve visited are in a constant evolution. In many cases older sections of a community become more desirable and as in the case with Casco Viejo gentrification revitalizes the community. We’ve also witnessed that gentrification often displaces some people, but we applaud cities that attempt to relocate displaced into comfortable and affordable homes. Thank you for your comment and insight about Casco Viejo.
It’s definitely one of our favourites and although we don’t see ourselves settling down anytime soon, Casco Viejo would be a place we’d choose if we were ready to stay in one place.
I didn't watch this video. The exaggerated expressions on this couple's faces on the cover image of this video turned me off. Nothing is that exciting. Can't stand excessive hype.
