    Man this takes me back. We used to make these in Boy Scouts. In fact this was the first carving I ever did. Pinewood Derby cars being the next. What great days those were. Thank you for this.

    What I really appreciate is how neat, clean & tidy you keep your gear, work area & camp sites. I tried watching a video yesterday & couldn’t because he kept forgetting where he put his stuff as he emptied out his whole bag & the things contained in his bags. It drove me & my ocd on cleanliness mad!

    Great job on the reel. I use a pole that has a large ferrule that sticks out far enough to wrap a hobo reel around. Hold the pole in your left hand and the hobo reel in your right. Just point the reel at the big ferrule when casting. And reel em in!

    Thank you for another excellent video Cpl Kelly. As I have watched your videos for the past couple of years I have come to consider that people born to serve their country will find a way to do so no matter the situation. First you served in our military, for which we all owe you an impossible to repay debt of gratitude, but now you serve again by providing these videos and underscoring this way or life and mindset which was the basis or our nation IMO.

    The method you used to wrap the bank line, we called "whipping". It was traditionally used to keep splices, and the ends of a cut rope, from fraying.

      Check out the Corporal's ladder pack frame vid also! If you are gonna have them harvesting some wood, might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone... fyi- Dollar Tree has a handsaw, it isnt the best tool you could find but it could get your Scouts started down this path

    • @MasterYoist
      @MasterYoist 5 років тому +3

      For scouts, you might notice that the way he is making the handle is identical to the technique used for whipping the ends of rope to prevent fraying. I do that with paracord on my walking stick. Using an awl to bore through the stick about 3 feet apart enables me to unwrap the whip and quickly have a bow drill.

      Your welcome sir. Just a old fisherman of many years :-( A disable combat vet that can't even fish now. Was a avid Bass fisherman in my last 35 yrs. grew up fishing bluegill ponds. By 12 was fishing a small river for catfish and Crappie or anything that was biting.
      Grew up hunting squirrels and rabbits, later quail. When we finally got Deer up here from Southern IL. , that gets in your blood.
      But Agent Orange has about gotten me now, so happy to be listening and seeing the birds and wild life around the house and woods at 75 when most who go sprayed are probably dead.

    I now have to make one of those from some of the oak or hickory wood we have here in Arkansas and keep it in my backpack. That is about the only thing which I don't have in the pack since there is plenty of fishing accessories in my pack. The weight won't be a factor since the finished wood is light once completed. Thanks for sharing this tip with all of us and I hope you have a great new week.

    Cool beans yet again.
    I was going to improvise by fastening a sewing thread spool on that length of wood. But your being able to carve one in encourages me. Boy that mora has a wide spine.😀
    You have this enigmatic wry grin.
    It would work well with boisterous students.
    It could say "I know more than you. If you don't want to learn,at least be quiet."

    Another good one. This inspired me to make one about a couple years ago. I used one of those plastic tubes, I think they’re called 2 liter bottle preforms. Look like a big plastic test tube with a soda bottle cap on it. I flared out a 1” grey pvc coupler and jb plastic welded it to the closed end to act as the “reel”. It works really well. I use 20lb green mono and a slip bobber set-up.

    Hobo fishing are fantastic when weight and space are critical have used them a lot and have also made them from pvc just in case and good idea is to also use clear plastic film canisters in side the handle to kep tackle organized you can also add a lanyard to the back of the handle with extra bank line to go around the wrist be for cutting it helps just in case and again keep up the good work and semper-fi.

    Neat. I liked your fishing pole with the double Y-shaped line spool on it better. I actually made one of those out of a springy branch, put a wire eye on it, loaded it with 10 pound spider wire and caught a 3 pound bass. I left the pole at the fishing spot for any one to use and some one must have liked it so much they took it home with them haha.

    Making one of those is a fun project. In Real Life, I have made Hobo Reels many times using any plastic, long neck, drink or syrup bottle. Stores (and trash cans) are full of Long Neck bottles.
    For back up bait, I cut chicken gizzards into quarters, stick an awl thru them and then push it down over the eye of a treble hook. Then I hang the hooks outside in the sun and wind to turn into jerky. That way, you can store the baited hooks inside the long neck bottle and it won't stink and rot.
    Many morings, I wave woken up to a couple of catfish to grill on some coals for breakfast. I gut them and just put them on the coals of the morning fire. That way you don't have to skin them, the skin gets crisp and comes off easily once the flesh is flaky.
    I don't waste space carrying floats or bobbers. I always have a knife so I look for dry twigs the right size and length then I whittle off the bark so it is light colored. Then I carve a groove around one end and tie the line to that. When you get a nibble the twig/float quivers. When you get a bite it stands straight up and then goes under.
    Eddited because I caint speel.

    Excellent video, as always, but you did a fabulous job showing and explaining the steps close out. I have watched these and your catch-and-cook videos and have wondered one thing: Why do you always use such tiny hooks? I would like to see you try to catch a BIG fish with one of your hobo reels and a bigger hook or lure. Challenge.

    Thank you for the video, your videos are always informative. I appreciate your mix of modern and traditional skills and methods. I have made Hobo Reels from PVC, they are cheap, easy to make and work really well. The hollow handle is great for storing fishing gear. I used mine exclusively last year as my fishing gear. All the tackle I needed fits in the handle, so I don't have to carry extra gear, it's reasonably light, and packs easily. The Hobo Reel does take some practice to cast effectively, but for small rivers and creeks it's a great tool. It does really well for jigging. I tell you what though, you hook onto a nice sized rainbow trout you are in for a nice little fight and challenge! Once again, thank you for the videos, keep up the great work.

    Hey sir if you carry a key ring wwith you tie it to the end of a stick about 7 ft long to use with your hobo reel you can cast far trust me it was my first fishing pole 🎣. My grandfather showed me 45 years ago an I still use one today. Great video. One more thing my grandfather made me a hobo reel like your baton about 3" diameter with a smaller handle only 9"" long . 3" long spool 3" round 6" handle an the front of the spool is where the inside compartment was . He made it with his oyster hatch an a old timer pocket knife. Keep the videos coming 👍

I feel that this could be a great survival tool as there are tons of plastic bottles just laying around and this could be a stand-in for cordage that has to be carried. The plastic bottles can be used for water, then turned into strong cordage.

      How would you say they're more reliable? Is it the sturdiness?

    • @Durplepurple94572
      @Durplepurple94572 5 років тому

      @@jake_from_statefarm7209 I found that fishing rods(the ones that I used) would have feeding problems or the top parts would break. A hobo rod is more simple and they have never given me trouble. The only downside is that you can't cast as far with a hobo rod than with a conventional fishing rod.
