Loved this project. Made one out of pvc a few years ago. Went to a bike shop and asked if they had any old throw away tubes. Got it free. As usual I over thought my project. Love the utter simplicity of your fishing kit. Rock on sir.

I appreciate you taking the time to slow - pan over the 'nature' shots. Some youtubers will be in the most beautiful places on earth and they'll pan over the scenery way too fast!! Love this channel!!
Just watched the video on bucking fishing instruments. Fish my whole life, but never knew anything about that. Thanks so much for the instruction Shawn.
We just made a few of these and WOW!!!! How easy! We live right on the Animas River here in Durango Colorado and will be taking one of these on our evening walks. By far one of the cooler ideas I've seen!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
This is the best hobbo fishing reel i have seen yet. With a quality braid fishing line and the amount of terminal tackle that will hold, never go hungry.
That was a great simplified Hobo reel . I have a disability which makes it hard to do some bush craft projects . So thank you for looking outside the box and helping people like myself.
...fantastic project for just about any age. I intend to share this with all levels of the Scouts that I serve, as well as make at least two for myself. I especially love your use of the Matthew Walker knot. It is one of my favorites, and I use it as a lanyard knot most of the time that I need an end knot. Another great video. Thanks for sharing knowledge and your willingness to teach others...
Watching recommended videos, commenting and liking. Holy sh*t I have been down the Corporals Corner rabbit hole for weeks and I am about to be in a local park dug in 3 feet deep by the swing set with a rocket stove cooking bacon yelling at the kids to be quiet while I eat.
I was looking at that line flare on the front of your hobo rod and it occured to me some flashlights have a flare like that on the front. Went to the thrift store and checked through their flashlights. Found the one with the best curve on the flare. Picked up the perfect "rod" for a buck. Gutted the insides and have a nice kit compartment. It has to be tested out for cast but looks great. 🤗 Thanks for the idea.😀
Great fishing spot. And loved the pocket kit. Judging by comments there are a lot of kids that never went fishing with small kit like that. Sat on a pier many times as a kid fishing and crabbing with an old scrap piece of chicken.😎
Yeah exactly. I remember when I was young my friends and I used to get sticks, tie small amount of fishing line to it, put a hook on it, dig up some worms, and walk in the woods to our favorite fishing holes like this. Good times, good times, and fun memories.
Thank you for another great video with simple and easy to understand tutorial on how to make yet another great tool for use in the outdoors. Awesome video !
Omg! I just did this after watching your hobo reel video. Minus the inner tube. I have several now. It feels so good to be ahead of the community videos for a chance. I used a roll of 1” gorilla tape to hold the spool of line on, then you also have some emergency tape.
I really like the knots for the wrist lanyard. I use lanyards like that a lot and have always just tied overhand knots. But the snake knot and Walker knot are more elegant.
@@spudboy2865 I don't agree. With a bowline, you bring the tag end up through the bight, around the standing end and down through the bight again . Remember the old mnemonic: "The rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree and back into the hole." In the video, he puts the tag end down through the bight from the top, around the standing end and back up out of the bight. So , the rabbit is going down in the hole instead of coming out. Tie it both ways with two pieces of cord and you will have two different knots. Very similar to a bowline and it doesn't seem slip either.
@@LShapedAmbush After replaying it you are correct. I didn't notice he had gone through the hole from the same direction both times when I first watched the video.
*very* clever and incredibly creative. I love DIY projects, even if I don't ever have the intention of building something myself. Just like so many other survival and "prepper" presentations, what I truly like is the "MacGuyver" aspect of it all... taking something and turning it into something else that it ain't.
Cool build for sure! For the line I would definitely recommend Power Pro braid! It's super tough, has low memory, and works great as a thread alternative for both cloth and leather stitching! It's great stuff!
You are on your way to a a million subs my friend and I'll say this, unlike other channels who get a million subs just off of trend alone, your channel will be timeless because you have certainly put in the work. Cheers!
Used what I learned from your video to cheat lol. Had a very old "survival" knife with the hollowed handle and cheap compass that I unscrewed the blade. Was already wrapped in cord and had a lanyard hole. Plugged the hole with a screw then put hooks, line, weights, and floats in the handle. Went from useless cheap knife to great hobo fishing kit. The plus is the compass does work, so have a backup compass.
I have a hollow handle survival knife 🔪 that’s got multiple functions. My hollow handle knife contains a fishing kit such as hooks, led weights and fishing line as an added bonus my knife has a harpoon type blade to make a spear from a stick so I can spear fishes as well. I think it’s a cool set up.
You are an awesome person. I love your shelter builds. You have taught me a lot over the years. God bless you brother. May your family be a peace always.
I bought a dozen or so of the those tubes about year ago for a different project now I know what to make out of my leftovers. Great idea. Thank you for making the video.
Excellent No nonsense. Descriptions OUTSTANDING. Knot tying video OUTSTANDING. One of the best knot instructors ever. Easy to follow for everybody. Crystal clear instructions and video. You could also use 1 inch PVC pipe with a glued on internal fitting cap for the throw end. Might have to sand the hexagon down to round. And a screw on cap for the handle end. For the grip rubber heat shrink tubing would also work great. Place it on the tube and very lightly heat it. The shrink tubing would really pull down tight. I like that stuff. Heat shrinked a couple of pliers handles that had peeled off works as good as the original. For holding the line on a heavy duty rubber band would work well. It is what we used to use to keep the line on the spool after opening the package.
I love watching this I have purchased a couple similar kits but my mind tells me I need to learn how to make survival items out of garbage or every day items around a house . I think what I have will be stolen . Thanks for sharing .
You demonstrated the two-strand, Matthew Walker Knot! I like the inner-tube idea and the lanyard---what could be worse than needing to catch some fish and losing one's fishing kit? Outstanding!
This version is pretty optimal and also looks great, even if that is subordinated. And great to see the end salute doing its grand comeback. Thank you for sharing.
I guess Noone on UA-cam has a sense of humor. Daphne raven, it was meant to be humor not critical of his abilities. I know he has been doing this stuff for awhile now. He does it often and I am lucky to get out on the woods once a year. I enjoy all his videos and I feel he has a right to say what he wants.
Another idea could be, using the bead tube wrapped in gorilla tape and then wrapped in beeswax coated hemp line and then inside the tube you can place tinder tabs, ferro rod with striker, and some stormproof matches or a mini bic and now you have a pocket fire kit!!!
Set up all of our go bag knives like this. Sail needle taped to sheath, wrapped bank line, put on two ranger bands, and slid in a ferro rod. Pretty good quick setup
The way you show your knot skills is amazing, easily replicated via going back in the video a few times. The only knots I retained from Boyscouts was the Bowline, clove hitch, and fisherman's knot. Really enjoy relearning these knots not as frequently used.

I really like the idea. As always your videos are very helpful. One thing though. While you show how to make the reel, you do not show how to use it properly. Yes we can see you using it somewhat, but for myself I have not used this kind of reel, and would not know how to properly cast with it and actually safely use it. I think that this would make a good short video in the future. I know it would help me. Thanks for all you do! S!
Semper Fi Devil Dog, Best pocket fisherman ive seen yet, outstanding job, keep the great ideas coming. Happy Fathers Day! USMC-"GOODNIGHT CHESTY, WHERE EVER YOU ARE!"
Good enough to be a john-fishing kit .... A stubby aluminum cigar tube (with screw cap) could also do the job. A good waterless desert fishing kit. Catch a small mouse, have a small (rubber?) mouse toy, make a mousy-like fur item, or a (rubber) lizard-like critter. Attach to line, walk and drop on open desert near critter path. Jerk-bait the lure. Wait for hawk, falcon, or critter to grab, desert "fishing" at its best.
Nicely done. I carved a hobo kit a few weeks ago and used a cork as the stopper, unfortunately the wood was too wet and it cracked the kit however the bank line kept it together. After that I thought of using PVC to make one with a bigger compartment. I like the bead tube option, well played.
Nice job on the 'survival fishing kit'. I had some different names for knots you used, but hey, they work, that's the main thing. I could see this as a 'Patrol Project' for the Boy Scouts, one inner tube should be enough for a 6-8 boy Patrol.
I'm glad you considered the fact that people don't have the money, skill or tools to do some projects. I like this project more than the carved fishing kit because I don't have the tools or skill for that. I can actually do this. One thing I do need to study and practice is knot making. By the way, what was the plant you showed that looked sort of like a dandelion. I think I have that growing in my yard and have never found out what it is. Mine isn't dandelion because it has multiple flowers/seed heads and is branched while a dandelion only has one flower/seed head.
What an awesome video!! It has given me ideas for DIY Christmas gifts for kids and grandkids. I will have to see how much I enjoy making these, because it also looks like it could be a way to generate some cash in my retirement!
A metal cigar tube works well for this as well!
A bag under the lid keeps it waterproof too
