- Recorded December 9, 2017, at the UH Hilo Performance Center. Dweezil Zappa is an American rock guitarist and occasional actor. He is the son of musical composer and performer Frank Zappa. Exposed to the music industry from an early age, Zappa developed a strong affinity for playing the guitar and producing music.

Wow. What a great performance from such a young group of people. I really admire the younger generation playing this kind of music. The music world is not lost.
That Dweezil is keeping his father's legacy, giving his time to the younger generation exploring it, and he's one mean guitar player besides is extraordinary.
@Martin G I'm not sure Dweezil would agree with you, or the vast majority of musicians I've ever known, but you be you
Dude, this serious music is his dad’s ‘putrid filth’. Somehow you didn’t know that. He plays the music of Frank Zappa, strictly. Grrrr
Frank’s ‘sleaze’ was sometimes over the top but always satirical. Adolescent sometimes, puerile, even. ‘Putrid filth’’? Naw, that’s GG Allen territory. Sleazy guitar, sure, which I hear Dweezil emulating a certain amount. Frank was a great bandleader and always seem happy and content sorrounded by such great players. Hardworking (workaholic, really), smoked too much, probably. Not perfect, no doubt. Left slot of music that a lot of people love. Go, Dweezil!
Greggery Peccary , just try this guys, like try to play Hackett Creation Solos Firth Of Fifth , dont try it man lolo or the Creation of Steve Hackett with Banks Horizons-Suppers Ready , dont try to play the final rs Ready Live , or just try to play ther Ciavonnne of Back luke Steve hackettlololololo
@Martin G Really!? WTF is wrong with you? Why the hate?
one of the coolest performances I've watched in a while, moves just like pops, Zappas are strong
What a beautiful version. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for Dweezil to play his fathers music. Not so much from a skill perspective. Because it's hard to have the mission of keeping his Dads music alive, so he tried to be as close to the original as possible to do the original justice. What a massive project. I find that he now sounds much more like Dweezil and that does his Dad even more justice. Fantastic development. Such a great accomplishment! Thanks Dweezil for giving your gift to us.
Check out him playing Watermelon in Easter Hay, it's so moving. Tears are running down his face.
Very beautiful, mature playing by the orchestra members! This Zappa composition really comes alive in a setting like this, and of course Dweezil nails the guitar work...
Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny.
rofl
one of franks quotes from the live at the roxy album. love it
Dweezil does his dad proud - not that we needed to be reminded thereof but it can't be stressed often enough how great and well rounded a player he is!! And yeah gravely underrated for that matter.
Thomas Türling, he’s a better overall guitarist than his dad
@@michaelcontreras148 His pallet to draw from certainly is way broader. And I admire Dweezil's playing in mutliple ways. He has great taste, great tone and a second to none technique. His Dad has achieved something only a scarce few have ever - to have a unique sonic footprint - you can instantly tell it's Frank.
You can tell which ones actually have heard black napkins. Especially the vibes player
Dweezil you killed me exactly like you Dear Father used to kill me and i'am still alive :))
Dweezil always has the craziest overdriven tones. Shoutout to his pops for that
Dweezil has the same tone and feel that Pop's had. He does honor to Franks Music.
Dweezil is better.
So dear to my heart to hear FZ's music played with reverence and style. I'll never forget the morning my ex-wife woke me to tell me Frank had died. I was in a panic and shock for several days... I thought the music may have died with him. Glad to know that was far from the case...
OMG Dweezil. I don’t know what to say.
This song can move me to tears.
it does
Much of Frank & Dweezil's music does. Unlike any other musicians. For me.
Paying Justice to his father this is beautiful
Dweezil has kept Franks music alive. The younger generation are respecting the music that has not been forgotten.
Good to see the younger generation performing uncle Franks music in their own innovative style
I am so impressed with the man that Dweezil Zappa has become.
Jeeeeze Dweeeezil sounds good. And great tone on the guitar.
The kids sound great! Dweezil on guitar, playing Frank's music to perfection, is delicious. Please come back to Seattle so I don't have to fly out to some Gawd-awful town in North Dakota to hear my favorite music live.
Sexy saxophone!
the trumpet sounds sexy too, but you didn't mention that, huh? ;-) grtz from Belgium.
@That big one The first or second sax; wich one do you mean? ;-)
Mahalo muthufukkas! Dweezil should hire these kids pronto!
Dweezil Zappa plays the legendary Gibson "Roxy" guitar from his father
It's not the original Roxy. The original got badly damaged and Frank put a big black scratchplate on it that covered most of the body.
I believe it’s the 2013 reissue of a replica of FZ’s. Its a nice guitar doubt I’d ever have one
With I'am 14 Years old in 1974, Zappa is my Musik. His Lyrics ends in 11/05 ? I don't now. There will be a rebirth of law and order.
Son of a Frank Zappa you just made me cry

You didn’t mean Ahmet did u
@@yisen8859 Joyful crying
It's Incredible that so many people ignores the existence of these music, But it's OK, Just for us whose deserves
It's good Young musicians have something "else" to play ..
When George Duke went to work with (not for, but with) Frank. Frank asked George to do a simple little Doo Woop run.
George replied "I can't do that"
Frank, "why, is it beneath you?".
George, at that moment George got it. Frank Zappa, whether it be an extremely emotional yet simple 2 chord progression or a "Black Page"
Intricate, abrupt time change, multiple time change more note per line than seems humanly possible. (For those of you who are thinking "Black Page" was one piece with 2 parts) Yes it was, I was fascinated to learn it's also a reference to a musicians nightmare of music too difficult for them to play.
Folks, Frank Zappa is was unlike any other musician.
And the solo Dweezil did in this performance brought me to tears, gut wrenching in the best way. Thank you. John 14:6
@Martin G , I agree. Frank actually (I believe) was a Satanist.
My Truth scripture address at the end, was for any other person that may read it.
Frank was angry at everything and everyone.
@Martin G , thank you for your comment. Martin, I may get a little lengthy on this so forgive me. Martin I know better now than to say that I loved Franks music.
As a musician and an artist, I believe that Frank Zappa was the most gifted in my lifetime. Now sixty-three years.
Listening to his music, I was often brought to tears. I have actually thought about contacting Dweezil to see if I could discuss his father's beliefs.
@Martin G , Martin this is fascinating. The "AI" would not let me write you. The computer kept erasing things that I was writing. (Have you seen videos of people asking the different Central Computers like, "Alexis", I have forgotten the rest.
The people in the videos will ask a series of questions about, Budda, Mohammed, etc. The computer gives a descriptive answer. Then they will ask who is JESUS? The computer will not answer or says it doesn't understand the question. I thought that's what was happening to my reply to you)
So I gave up. I had no idea it went through, Praise GOD.
Thanks for the very enjoyable exchange.
@Martin G Isaiah 26:12 Amen
This is good, but everyone in the group Dweezil chose looks so normal, including Dweezil himelf (though I know looks shouldn't count, and we're living in different times)
Listening to this was surprisingly emotional experience.
Interesting. For me, while it was a good rendition, well played and impressive, it brought no emotion.
Dweezil is even better. Frank said it himself when Dweezil was just a teenager, He knew that Dweezil had it and would be better than he. He also has his own sound and tone when he is playing his own music. The fact that he can capture Frank like he does, sometimes brings tears to my eyes. I know Franks music inside out almost 50 years now. Tears. Frank is missed and not just for his music..
Frank would be so proud! Good job Dweezil!
I heard Dweezil Zappa fixed Jimi Hendrix guitar! The one that Jimmy played at the Monterey Pop festival and lit it on fire! I'd love him to play that one!
Wasn't the Monterrey Strat, but the one Hendrix used in Astoria
Author Barrow ( zappa bassist) does a nice concert at his alma mater with students... Check it out...
Dweezil tiene otro sentimiento al tocar la guitarra, diria yo hasta mejor que su padre.
The mallets killed this piece given Franks writing style was to use triads which is a much more robust percussion sound .
Sublime live version !
The homie with the big boy sax killed it! Everyone else was a little afraid to cut loose but still a nice performance...
CoTheReal The kid with tone? Man, what pro sounding sax!
@@ronlight7013 indeed!
Yeah, I liked him. He looks like Sal Nistico and has a tone like Gato Barbieri. But I also enjoyed the flautist and keyboard player.
Love that THE DWEEZ of RIFFEEZ is keeping Papa Franks Genius alive! Dweezil has become quite exceptional in his playing! Love it!
btw...?
Lil' Lady in Red is HHHHHOT!!! ;-)
As usual, the bass player is ignored. He hardly even makes it into a background shot.
Same on Pygmy. The bass player is somewhat ignored. Great catch there Mom.
Frank often relied HEAVILY on bass players defining the tonal center and rarely allowed them freedom to deviate from the pedals and vamps. Check out two of his pieces "Beat It With Your Fist" and "Republicans" for examples of two different bassists trying to make the most of those restrictions.
My favorite Zappa album, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch, is an exception and has killer bass all over it.
Black napkins le titre qui me fait chialer tellement c'est MAGNIFIQUE merci frank je l'écoute depuis 76
Captain Slowhand Sure Tone really is intensive percussoid Bliss.
That solo has fz good vibes with the opposites intersection Loop of Ruth ( Speedy Gonzales) Underwood .
A refreshing contrast indeed!
I'm now hearing a Dueling Vibes run as I stop the spin to write this.
Love it. Love Frank... he had a huge impact back in the day. I think Dweezil is cool. The clip and the idea is great. That's all, no big shit.
Looks like the other two guitar players seemed relived to not have to follow Dweezil's solo..
Not everyone has Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen hanging around the house.
Dad would be proud!!! Modern day Jazz Standard!!!!
That's so uptown. Like a Florsheim shoe.
Dweezil takes his fathers music and just owns it, This is extraordinary.
Yes so good and dweezil you are the mam .
the MAN, I hope?
@@Peter_B at least not the nam! Or even nan! :)
Genetics are real on so many levels when it comes to Dweezil. Great performance by all. Thank you.
this was fantastic thanks
I love what Dweezil did with what always has been one of my favorite songs of his dad.
The sax player kinda stole the show tbh
Way to GO UH HILO JO and all the jazzers and audience for keeping it fresh.
Tremendous respect to ambitious and thoughtful tribute to Zappa compositions!
KUDOS! ❤
Dwarves turning pages but on cue and running about... and the spirit of laughter again and again..
The notes live on and as it should be and the Composers Son evolves... What I would not give for a black napkin.
Behold and please be Frank about it...
This group is bad
Some great chops in this orchestra. The Big Island rocks cool jazz......just came to Dweezil's solo. Nice to see him build on the great foundation his amazing father started. (kinda a sexy look too!)
Goosebumps! My favorite Frank song, for sure.. Would have loved to have had the opportunity to do this as a college-aged musician!
fantastic! pops must be proud! but was I the only one distracted by the backup singer?
The gal on the sax.
Dweezil did that damn good justice ...left nothing to be desired ...his father literally lives in him...proof positive of the power of dna
holy makaroni that guitar sound and solo was fockin epicQ!!!!!!
Dweezil has got it, period.
I hear his father in him.
Arrangement ....how his father would would likr it...
Thanks! Missing Michael Brecker...
Dweezil capitalizing on his father's very special and distinctive guitar virtuosity, really rips it up. Great guitarist/musician.
get your shoes and socks on people.. its just right around the corner... i think Dwe is actually gotten better than his dad on the guitar... imo
The kids done good. Wished ol' Dweez had opened in a more laceratin' fashion, ala Frank, but tasty nonetheless.
Very cool
I think he plays better guitar than his father did
Michael Contreras I never had the guts to say that but Dweezil is the best guitarist
Dweezil is the man!
Doesn't have the heart that it should have, and I know that Dweezil has been through tough times with his brother Amet and the rights of Frank's music. Mom and brother put some royal screws to this guy, such a shame.
That's just, like your opinion man...
Superb version, Frank would approve I am sure.
the second tenor sax, he was feeling it. But overall would Frank approve???? not enough 'spunk'! as for the lady in the re trouser suit, all hetro's are in love.
There were too many flubs on all counts for Frank to approve. I think it was nerves. Gotta be intimidating to tackle this stuff with Dweezil 5 feet from you. Nice effort tho.
LOVE this Tune. Saw the last 7 tours.
26 tone deaf motherfuckers :p haha.
This is a smorgasborg of smiles
Beautiful and timeless. Well there is.
Love Dweez playing ( great tone)but this version of "black napkin" is very subdued( night clubish),FZ on- the- edge kinda tension is missing.
i bumped it it up to 1.25 speed. a little better me thinks.
👍🏻💪🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻More Zappa Every Day!!!!!!

This music is drivel and the guitar solo part was a little tasteless also. Two chords throughout leaves the ears feeling not so good also. Sorry fans but with all those instruments and talented performers it left me feeling deflated...saving grace I switched of when I realised the music was going nowhere really slowly! The dark exotic girl and the other one are very beautiful though.
You are drivel....music is about sound and mood.Because you do not like it does not mean it is drivel.
Bye Felicia
I can see uncle frank up there smiling down with the biggest of grins ,yeah fine chops son ,lol
gawd, that doubled tone dweezil gets is GORGEOUS!!
I was living in San Jose 1969. I thought Jimmy lives guitar on fire at Monterey Pop?
Hot legs... I Mean hot sax.
One of The best live performance I have seen on youtube so far! Great Dweezil you are a master! And the musicians are wow awesome!
hot damn! thx Frank and the rest of ya
hallo ween too neight :-)
That really takes me back! Thank you!! 🎸🎭🥁🕊🏴☠️😎💜🌎
Impresionante.
Beautiful.
To Be Frank, This Riff Will Be In My Head For The Rest Of The Day.
So..... DOES humor belong in music?
No, of course not.
The humor in the music helps lesser musicians such as I to not feel like morons for not being able to play Frank's music ourselves.. Thanks so much for that, Frank!
Sadly , very shy musician whit low skill.... sorry....
Don't be sorry, with practice, you will come out of your shell and gain more skills.
@@gnpd07 Do not take my comment as just negative, it must also be understood that these young people had to be really stressful because they were working with Mr.Zappa
The first saxophonist had a lovely, soulful style.
Frank: Make free sessions with Dweezil. You'd be proud and astonished...💪👍
