Lies of P Review

- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- Lies of P is an upcoming Soulslike game developed and published by Neowiz Games. The game takes inspiration from the Italian novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio" and is heavily influenced by From Software's Bloodborne.
While Lies of P is derivative of Bloodborne, it's one of the few examples of a Soulslike game done right. The combat has variety and feels good, while the game's environments ooze in atmosphere.
GameSpot's Richard Wakeling had a chance to check out the game, and this is his review of Lies of P. Lies of P is set to release September 19, 2023.

So many great games this year. If only I had the time to play them all.
If you don't have time then don't play games with rating less than 10/10.
Same. I got so many games, I can't even keep up yet I keep buying them😅
If I had money to buy them all lol
@@xMiketheManx So do I😢! My Steam library is so full that I still haven't played God of War. The old one. It will take me years just to finish Baldur's Gate 3😭!!
Ah life. :'(
You know the reviewer felt like a badass when he wrote “and that’s the truth”
So many good games this year it’s insane!
This won't be a nominee. And yes this is the best year of gaming of all time. That's facts
@@rayromano6249it’s definitely up there.
Nintendo is having a year on par with their 2017 which is surprising honestly, wasn’t expecting totk to be as great as it is and pikmin 4 is probably my gotysf, Mario wonder looks v exciting too.
I don’t know if any year will ever top 1998 though, there are a lot of great big budget sequels this year but 1998 had half life, metal gear solid, banjo kazooie, thief, and the original Pokémon as well as numerous great sequels to existing franchises like ocarina of time.
This year is definitely one of the best but I still wish there were more original IP besides indie titles. Nearly every title in contention for goty this year are sequels, great sequels of course but still would like more aaa and aa original titles.
Lies of P is extremely solid but I don’t think it will be widely remembered in ten years because it’s so derivative of Bloodborne and other souls titles.
@@rayromano6249 u AAA gamers care lot about nominees and stuff like that right 😅
@@rossgaller960 I completely stopped caring about awards and stuff when Last of Us pt2 won something. The gameplay is awesome but the writing is quite bad. How can a game of poor quality writing win anything? Makes no sense.
@@abouttime2569it’s a game, so it should be judged on its gameplay. If you play it on hard, it’s one of the greatest games ever made.
This is probably my most anticipated game of this half of the year! It looks amazing and I'm hoping it'll scratch that souls game itch while I wait for Shadow of the Erdtree
Idk, there's a good chunk of people going crazy for Spiderman 2, i feel like that Game is more anticipated than this, and probably also Alan wake 2
Edit: true, the comentary said is his most anticipated game, but not the most anticipated game of the year in general
Edit 2: i feel bad for the og comentary, half the replies were to my comentary becuase i didn't read the comentary carefully

@@Jbswe The first game has a cult following so I wouldn't say nobody is looking for the sequel.
@@jajasking9652 yeah just my personal most anticipated. Overall, re4 was probably my most anticipated of the whole year and it delivered far beyond my expectations
This game is a masterpiece. I am blown away man
Honestly i wouldn’t go that far. It’s definitely not bad, but as far as the passion you can feel in the game, it’s like high school dark souls.
That’s subjective. I’ve played every single dark souls and bloodborne it’s on par, if not better, than a lot of the titles I’ve played. The music, the story, the combat. The environment. It’s got it all.
Probably my favorite souls genre style game. Even beating Elden Ring in my book. Open world is awesome but the linear path filled with secrets was just such a welcome change from the open world craze
All in all: Best game I’ve played in years.
@kirkheron I couldn't disagree more. They had many poetic moments and if you have a brain to appreciate from software games you'd think this would be a shining example. Didn't feel high school to me at all. They dealt with many mature themes and the game itself had a message, it was a shining example of soulsborne genius and they made something revolutionary. This game set the bar higher for from software and from software is gonna have to put out something special for their next game to top this (not speaking on previous from software games, those are already establish gems, I only am comparing this to future from software games)
@b_rant_gaming8835 you sir are a man of truth. I agreed wholeheartedly with every you said
My ONLY complaint is that there is multiplayer. The building blocks are there so they may add it in at a later date. Adding multiplayer/invading would breathe life into this game even more and add more to replay value.
"Turning any incline into a potential threat" ... I felt that in my bones
For those who didn't play the demo. The deflection works like Sekiro's, it doesn't disbalance the enemy for a riposte like in BB.
Standard block: recoverable hp loss (easy but costly)
Perfect guard: no hp loss and build enemy's nonvisible stagger meter. eg. When the Watchman boss does a chain attack, chain deflections are needed.
This is the core part of the game and everything else is built around it. The nerfed roll during lock on is to encourage deflection.
Hmm. As someone who absolutely loved Sekiro, this is good to know.
Might give this game a go in the future. Thanks.
I can't unsee the protagonist being the Bill Clinton kid from the game awards.
Wow 8. Better than Starfield
Most of the new games released this year have been better than Starfield tbh

This game is amazing. Im 8 hours in on act 4 and its just such a fun game. I have nothing negative to say about it. I consider it a must buy if your a fan of soulslike its hands down the best one yet.
So far looks better than non fromsoft soulslikes.
Has there ever been a successful non fromsoft soulslike game?
@@kbthegoat824Nioh?
you gonna laugh but i think kena bridge of the spirits is the only soul game that isnt fromt fromsoft. but stilly really good
@blueberryshake333 forgot about that, might be the only franchise. But i think nioh has some soulslike trait but it is also very different combat, mechanic and environmental wise. If i had to choose the better game between nioh and lies of p judging from what i played in the lies of p demo, i'll pick nioh.
I thought Wo long was excellent, although it may be to action oriented to be called a souls like. I don't count Sekiro as a souls like, by the way.
A thorough review in 9 minutes
Nicely done
I didn’t enjoy the demo at all. How’s full game any different from the demo?
If only every other developer would learn this lesson. It's not about merely imitating the general idea of another game's mechanic... but imitating it in a way that is well designed and tested to ensure it captures the correct feeling of the source material. Sounds like one of the very few games that properly imitates dark souls and doesn't feel like a cheap 2 cent rip off. Interesting. Not changing my life level of excitement, but I would probably buy this game off of this review alone. Cheers to Gamespot for the good review
I cannot wait to play this.
are you thinking of getting the deluxe version of Lies of P as it gives 72hr early access. I'm thinking of getting it would you recommend on getting the deluxe version

We have ONE game like Bloodborne and immediately the reviewer says its derivative? There has been nothing like Bloodborne since its release. We are STARVING for more. What comes off as a con in the reviewer's eyes, to me is a pro.
I’m loving this game. Bloodborne is one of my favorite games ever and Lies of P is just below that.
Why is it that every soulslike just doesnt ever quite feel like its a full game i feel like its always kinda light on systems and variety.
Because they are soulslikes, not games made by fromsoftware.
Most soulslikes are soo short too, and one of the few long ones ( Code vein ) is not very good. This Game aparentily aims to a 30 hours first playthrough if you only do content required to complete the game
My backlog of games because of this year is HUGE. I'm still trying to finish up my BG3 playthrough. After that I need to get to (in no particular order) Starfield, CP 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC, Lies of P, Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy 16, and Hogwarts Legacy. There's just not enough hours in the day! 😅
I would recommend you add remnant 2 to that list too 😅
There is no race in finishing games. You have plenty to hold you up for a whole year.
Me too. So many good ones. Finished Remnant 2. Finishing Blasphemous 2 and playing Starfield. Lies of P next up
How is the dodging? I played the demo, and the dodging felt just barely unresponsive, still usable, but slightly delayed.
They said the improved it but idk
Devs said they heard that feedback and improved upon it but we won't know how much they improved it until the game's launch
likely a small improvement the emphasis is clearly on blocking and perfect blocking.
Kudos to Microsoft for probably the best year of GamePass of all time. Just passed 100 hours on Starfield and looks like I'm going to be putting time into this as well....
Great time for gaming.
While our future goes up in flames.
I hope they paid you a decent amount to shill for them!
Gamepass is definitely the best deal in gaming. It's pretty innovative and driving gaming forward.
100 HOURS ALREADY, TOUCH GRASS
This is like Bloodborne × Sekiro × Nier Automata smashed and a baby, can't wait!
This doesn't beat Bloodborne imo, but still a fantastic game nonetheless that I can't wait to play!
I feel like the complaints about the story ignores the rest of the genre. It's like complaining that an rpg doesn't have enough city building.
Why do people even care about the scores anymore. The reviewers don’t. And I’d debate someone on a podcast about it. Been gaming 35+ years and just don’t see the point anymore of 7-9 scores
But here you are in a review video comment section 😂
@@Juju-cm7ge I wanted to see what people were saying about the game 😆
yeah honestly i dont care, because alot of these reviews bring up "issues" with the game that i dont care about, or maybe even like. a games quality is mostly subjective. so an 8/10 can really be a 10/10 to a person playing it.
Can't wait for the game to drop
One issue I had with this review was that the reviewer did not replay the game and observe the different branching path or the effect the morality system had on the character or gameplay. Yet, in the review they are quick to dismiss it and even consider it a shortcoming. Would like future reviews to not touch on a topic or mechanic that hasn't completely been experienced by the reviewer when assessing its worth.
To be honest. We cant expect a reviewer to replay the game fully, as this is not how 90% of gamers will experience the game. Most of us will play it once and leave it afterwards.
To be fair, it's a souls like.
It makes sense for the directly told story to be so sparse.
That's what I was thinking. Why even criticise it for having a sparse story..... that's what Souls games are like. It's not trying to be GOW.
As he said, its missing a sens of wonder that dark is known for. You kinda twisting his words
@@teeman7137
But that's the point we are trying to make: If Squaresoft do it, it's "a sense of wonder" but here it's just "sparse story telling". Double standards?
@@nookie077 could mean that they dont do a good enough job like dark souls does it. Since story telling like this needs to be well written and thought out to be executed
@@robyfaraa4105
You may have a point.... and I understand nobody does it like Fromsoft. It was just the way the reviewer worded it. Let's be honest, all these games have pretty sparse main stories.
So, it's basically _Steelrising._
Very solid review, and it carefully walks the line on expectations for a game so steeped in the narrative and tone of others that walked before it. I think chastising the storytelling through the world is a little tonedeaf as this is a hallmark of the genre, but it's a reality that this can be a turn off for some audiences as it is a very subtle narrative approach that demands more exploration and mindfulness from the player to be truly appreciated. There's no getting around the derivative nature of the game, and for that I agree a point or two is going to come off no matter what, but I don't think that's a bad thing when the formula has become a genre. It would be like admonishing a metroidvania for having platforming. It's part of the charm, and I love that they went with a fairly novel weapon crafting system that respects the trickweapon concept without copying its identity. The fact that we got a game that's close enough to Bloodborne to merit acceptance is a feat worth celebrating. FWIW I'm also a huge fan of The Surge series too, so maybe I'm biased. In the meanwhile, here's to a great new entry into the world of soulslikes that sings a tune celebrated the world over. I'm stoked to get my hands on it.
I feel like the last 10 years is made only of dark souls like genre games.. wheres the innovative?
If it looks like bloodbourne and it runs 60+ FPS on pc its a game for me
"A striking setting ensures that Lies of P's aesthetic stands apart from other Souls games, including from Software's own"
Next sentence:
"Bloodborne is a clear inspiration leading it to feeling overly derivative"
Jesus GameSpot, do you not proofread these?
Isn’t the setting for Pinocchio supposed to be Italy, not France? 3:10
Yes but this is so different from Pinocchio that it doesn't matter hahaha
Tam clearly hasn't read the book. The talking cricket isn't named in The Adventures of Pinocchio, Jimminy Cricket was a name introduced in the original Disney film.
Very Sekiro-like combat.
It definitely has my interests.
But there's too many good games right now that i need to put progress into, so this one will have to wait a while.
Ugh. I’m having a hard time taking it seriously. It’s a legit bloodborne rip off to me. But I’ll still play…and probably love it lol
Ain't no way GameSpot made this video length stop at 9:11 just 2 days after 9/11
??? I think you're stretching it way too far
Anyone else getting really tired of the souls formula? This game looks like I've already played it ten times over. 5 years from now this is gonna be as tired and played out as ubisoft-type open world games are now. With all these soulslike games constantly coming out it feels like the annual CoD releases
Hmm.. this seems like something to get on Sale... holding out for Lords of the Fallen
This game got a 4/10 from VG247
Yeah, I'll get this on sale as well.
Good looking game, but basically Sekiro with a different setting. In terms of combat at least.
Great review team! Stoked to play this one
Will i enjoy this game if I've never played a souls/like game? Also i dont know anything about Pinocchio other than the nose.
Best looking souls game since sekiro
The only negative is the story is vague and you give it an 8?? Guaranteed if the title screen said "FROMSOFT" you woulda given this a 9 or even 10. FS never even tells stories
But is there a Monstro boss fight?😂
That would be siiick! Lol
I never to experienced Bloodborne. I think this will do.
Feel like a missed opportunity to compare the arm to DMC5 instead of Sekiro, especially with a combat grapple and electric shocks.
Its definatly the best Soul like game outside of Fromsoft this review seems spot on.
They’re puppets…. Yes them being rigid is part time of the game
The reviewer was SO harsh. If Fromsoft would have done the exact same game I am sure it would be a 9.
They did do the exact same game, Bloodborne which came out 8 years ago. This was apart of the reviewers criticism of the game being derivative but still fun.
It's not the exact same game, there is no way this is at the same level as the OG Bloodborne. It's one of the greatest games ever made. @@TC-dh7zi

IGN tells me that the regular mobs in exploration areas are a pushover, and the bosses sometimes present unreasonable difficulty spikes. Now GameSpot tells me the exact opposite .... ?
Never trust an IGN Review
Can't spell ignorant without IGN
also difficulty is subjective. Something you find incredibly difficult may be easier for someone else who's more experienced
If its like the demo then the roaming mobs are a pushover. Hopefully they made them harder
IGN gave Alien Isolation a 6/10 and Deathloop a 10/10. Always take their reviews with a big pinchful of salt.
This year will leave you broke. Hopefully next year is just as jam packed with releases.😊
Good review good score.
This is a surprisingly good review I'm surprised
Looks good, haptics & adaptive triggers plus recording a whole boss fight. Premium way to play
Are you able to understand what bosses speak later in the game? Or maybe in NG+? (like in Nier)
Yeah on the second playthrough, you can understand all of it.
I knew it was going to do well
All souls games dont have a story and they call it art. Now for lies of pi it is a problem?
My thoughts during the review as well. Sure Dark Souls and Elden Ring give you a sort of idea of what your end goal is, but there's not much indicating clear antagonist relationships, usually because the entire world is your antagonist.
Shhh 🤫 FromSoftware gets away with frame-rates as well
@@TB-BBB While I definitely think that point has merit, There's a difference between a game having no clear story and still having meaningful characters and lore, versus having no story and expecting the setting to make up for it. The reviewer was clear in that they lacked a motive to progress in terms of story, but found that motive in exploring the very detailed and very flavorful world. Elden Ring has a ton of genuine effort put into making backstory and lore that doesn't even show up in the games afaik, and not every game puts that much effort into making the "lore" of a game rich enough to supplement or replace a compelling narrative. We'll see how Lies of P lands, but I'm inclined to agree with the reviewer for now based on what's been released about the game.
@@paxmelchizedek6095 a motive to progress? my motive to progress is a fun game. i cant stand to see a game get a worse review just because of the story, because on subsequent playthroughs i'll just be skipping the cutscenes anyway.
@@theeliteterrarian1888 Sure, and I personally feel the same for 85% of games, but I was simply quoting the reviewers opinion. There are times where the story of a game actively reduces the quality of a game, and it doesn't seem like this is the case for Lies of P. The game still got 8/10, which is genuinely pretty good (notwithstanding the issues of video game review scores generally speaking)
so if the only bad things about the game is a somewhat lackluster story and rigid movements...
then i couldnt be more excited because i dont care!
When a Fortnite player plays a Souls game, this is the type of review you get!

Was hoping for a more narrative driven souls-like, similar to the Starwars Jedi Fallen order or Survivor
Jedi Fallen Order is lame and bland.

I really want to play this but I’m not trying to pay more for a few days of “early access”.
Not liking the way games are heading in that regard
early access is dumb you'll get to play it anyway a few days later and with single player games like this what is even the point in being first? most people will need to wait until getting off work or for the weekend to play anyways.
An extra attack end of combo or extra attack after a second more delay…..yeah sounds cheap to me. The demo I found frustrating and I’ve platinumed Bloodborne/Elden ring etc. before anyone starts. I just didn’t click with it. I find the the souls like games are all the same….they feel like cheap rip offs or double down on annoying mechanics.although it sounds like this is satisfying so maybe they fixed some bits after the demo.
