  • @BlastBeatsFTW

    For anyone curios as to what they are doing, tom is being "Punched in" in each take at a certain point in the riff by the engineer, meaning he can play certain parts of the riff over and over again until the whole section is completely tight. For instance, he mentions certain "pull offs" sounding weak or off time, which is what he points at on the screen at 3:20 ish and at 5:15 [sound is displayed as waveforms in the program pro tools and you can often see transients, or "audio spikes" and if they are on time with other tracks such as the kick drum or the project "grid"] . Then once one full rhythm track has been done for the riff, he can work on the second rhythm track. These are then panned left and right to give a wide sound, known as double tracking. Some artists "quad track", meaning four of the same guitar part usually panned 2 left, 2 right for some extra heft, but with busier riffs this can get messy. The same process happens with vocals and often drums [although some drummers like playing lots of full takes to be edited together after] People like joey sturgis take this process to the extreme to get that ultra modern overproduced metal sound, even editing the raw DI tracks straight out of the guitar, before going into the amplifier to get several ultra tight takes

    • @iron_tyson
      @iron_tyson 7 років тому +20

      There is some footage of Tom doing this in the documentary for LF/LT where you can see the screen. I believe he double takes both guitar parts in that album.

    • @BlastBeatsFTW
      @BlastBeatsFTW 7 років тому +17

      Yeah often times the strongest rhythm player will just end up recording all the rhythm for the whole album, depending on the other members. Some lead guitarists are fine with that and are happy to just play lead parts and solos and let the rhythm guy track it all.

    • @JulianWorden
      @JulianWorden 7 років тому +13

      MervDesign1987 All the rhythm guitars on the album were quad tracked, not double tracked.

      He's fixing notes that he hasn't hit perfectly or don't hit exactly on the beat. It might sound fine listening like that but if he kept it in the album, you would probably notice it eventually after listening to the album over and over and there is no going back once the album is released. Not sure if that answers your question. Hopefully it does!

      I think they're were also layering the tracks, it probably had like 4 guitar tracks on the same riff, thats why so much repetition, you have to record the same riff, 4 times, in this case he was playing like 1/3 of the riff lots of times, in which they would separate 4 or so layers of the rec choosen ones

      @@ShapeShifterPB Cool man! Good luck with the guitar :) I would go for normal EMG 81 then, as I really really don't like any fishmans that Ive tried, heard. I can't make them sound good at all haha! Lost forever Lost Together is all EMG:s ;) I know, the hype for fishmans is really big, but to me it's all hype. I don't like the distortion that is in them by default and I hate the honkyness. Just my thoughts. EMG:s all the way for rhtym playing. Would even take them before the juggernauts :)

    The question I ask is - how is he playing so low with only a 6 string?

      Attila FTW! Baritone scale fretboard. 27".

      Even before he used baritone Mayones guitars, he just used heavier gauge strings.

      Baritone tuned F#, F#, B, E, G#, C#. Basically, tune to drop B and then tune that low B down to F#. I would advise thick strings.

      Old comment I know but some baritone 6 strings play as low as 7 or even 8 strings! It's not about the number of strings but it's about the string thickness and the guitar's scale length
