- So with me repairing PS3's I thought we can take a look at the different Playstation 3 Phat's variants. We will be looking at the CECHA01 (60GB PS3), CHECHB01 (20GB PS3), CHECHE01 (80GB PS3), CHEECHG01 (4GB PS3) and spotting the differences they have, such as Backwards Compatibility for PS2 Games. Memory Slot Readers and overall design.
Should I remake a video of this? I feel I have right equipment now to show them off in depth. I pretty much owned every US Phat PS3 model including the test and tool units. Would you guys like to see input on those and comparisons between each model?

The L01 model is a monster. Manufactured Fall 2008 to Winter 2009, last fat models. Super quiet, still just as sexy as the old fat models (without the chrome finish of course), runs every ps3 and ps1 game. Logged at leat 10,000 hours in mine and no issues whatsoever. There is no denying the PS2 backward compatibility is missed though. I just bought a launch A01 model last week. Terribly freighted everytime I boot that thing up though, lol. Fan speeds are ridiculously loud and outputs at least twice the heat of my L01. I'll tell you though, PS2 games do look a lot better on it than on an actual PS2.
There is a simple fix to the fan issue, but it's a little touchy for people that are in experienced, needless to say the first one I did I screwed up, but I've done 2 more and got perfect results both times, anyways the fix is to delid the Cell Processor, basically the Thermal paste UNDER the head spreader is finished.
That's the one and only model I've ever purchased. the L01 non backward compatible 80GB PS3. Bought it the Winter of 2009 and still going strong 11 years later. All I've had done to it as of maintenance, I had it cleaned inside out by a Sony licensed shop back in 2015. But that's it. I payed 440 dollars out the door after tax for the system. And it's the best 440 bucks I've ever spent.
Repaste and put CFW to control fans, I have an AO1 and I love it

The G01 has been working amazingly for me since I bought it a year ago. Super quiet, super smooth, and super shiny. Even though it's not backwards compatible, it's more reliable than those backwards compatible models. Those are prone to YLOD
I recently lucked out and got a backwards compatible 80GB CECHE01 (plain E01, not MGS4 bundle) model from Value Village (thrift store in Canada) for dirt cheap.
It didn't come with a controller or AV cables but I already had a HDMI cable. It's perfectly working, in decent shape, and is missing the memory card flip-up lid. Came with God of War as well.
I wish it was a CECHA01 but a CECHE01 will suffice for me.

I finely got hold of PS3 Backwards Compatibility CHECHE01 80gb few days ago it works great for $150 here in Canada the led was broken i just replaced it from dead ps3 always good idea keep parts never know it can be used. I have tested few PS2 games so far I have over 40 games. I have no plains be jailbreaking it . I have PS3 slim to its jailbreak
I got my CECHA00 Japanese PlayStation® 3 console that contains a 60GB HDD a week ago for $215 and I love it. The seller took care of it these whole years because my thermal paste doesn't have the factory paste. Thank God because I would've got the YLOD sooner than later. 👍👍

I had a cech l01 80gb (not backwards compatible) it was very reliable and I recommend it. I plan on getting another one in 2020.

It seems like the 20GB and 60GB variants of the PS3 are hard to find cheap nowadays.

I have a fat ps3 cechL01 which came out in fall of 2008 I completely rebuilt it. I never heard my model getting ylod probably because of the 65nm for both cpu and gpu I’m assuming
Recently just got a Test Unit!
You can't go wrong with them. I bought mine back in August last year and has been pure gold. I believe mine used to be property of Sony Online Entertainment. The good about them too is that you can downgrade (as low as 1.00), so if you want the original startup and game screen they used to have, you can. Just make sure it's a DEX firmware and not CEX. If you put CEX on it, it'll brick it

@@alexkiksyomom One way to get around the overheating issue I've heard is that you prop it up on a stand that has air flow. For example if you prop it up on one of those little breakfast in bed trays and the tray has hole patterens as apposed to being a solid surface, that actually gets rid of the overheating issue.

I have the 60GB PS3 with 4 USB ports that it is backwards compatible with all PS2 games with the discs.
I have the 80GB PS3 FAT and it’s back compat. It even plays PS2 games that aren’t listed on the PS Store, like Tribes Aerial Assault

The fat B01 was not chrome trimmed but it had more like a shiny grey or mat silver trimming. PS3 models CECHA01, CECHB01, and CECHE01 are the only models that still have PS2 backwards compatibility.
Yes! CECHB01 is a Black Trim. Not chrome. Only CECHA01, CECHE01 and Euro CECHJ01 I believe have it.
I do believe some people mix up CECHB01. Sometimes people trying to get rid of their consoles. I seen some people call CECHA01 a CECHB01 because they only have 20gbs on it. Its a bit weird.
Also note that the CECHE01 isn't completely backwards compatible for PS2, because it uses emulation so some games run really bad
Don't you just have to look for 4 usb ports in the front to know if it's PS2 compatible?
@@alexgallegos7582 It only emulates the Emotion Engine, it still has the actual Graphics Synthesizer Chip on board. The PS2 System Data that you download from the PSN store is basically an emulator for the CPU.

I know im extremely late but the main questions is which is the best ps3 phat with memory card bay,backwards conbatable with ps1 & ps2 games and is reliable (doh most phat models aren't realy) but u catch my drift. Any answers?

j Suzuki in most cases from what I heard it can be that the HDD is failing. Though it could be that the console needs a cleaning, new thermal paste and so on.

Totally agree of having or look for cech/a01/b01 for their rarity and compatibility. For just playing ps3 games I only track down ps3 slim cech 21xx and later as the older fat ps3 are ok but don't want the risk of ylod since the cell/rsx chip die were big and ran hotter. Reason I look for cech21xx and later because cech20xx didn't die shrink the rsx which may have as high of chance to ylod as the late fat ps3.
Aah, that's very interesting! I did not know that myself. Im very familiar with the inside of the PS3 phats. Slim model, not so much since Ive only opened one to repair the drive.

Yes, I'm kinda confused with the PS3 Phat models. I still can't pinpoint my model of the PS3 Phat!
Mine has no flap that opens up the card reader, it's a panel that comes completely off revealing nothing but more plastic. It looks as though it could be upgraded to have one though,. I've played a couple of PS3 games, some not installing, I think the HDD is on its way out. Plays PlayStation 1 games, but not PlayStation 2! Blu-ray films play good, also DVDs, it has WiFi and Bluetooth.
The warranty stickers on the HDD bay and case are intact so the last person inside it was a bonefied Sony PlayStation 3 manufacturer

@@paranoidgenius9164 well after figuring out, I think your PS3 model is a 40gb model since it can't play ps2 games, no flap reader, and it can play PS1 Games (Since all PS3 Models can play PS1 games).

I purchased 2x FAT PS3: a CECHC04 - PAL Partial BC onhand and a CECHA00 - NTSC-J Full BC not yet on hand.
My plan is to use the CECH04 with OFW for PS3 games + trophies with some of my PAL PS2 games and the CECHA00 with CFW.
I just got a 80gb ps3 fat non backwards compatible but mine is the CECH-L01 and they didn’t have the slim they only had the fat so I got it

albert puljos not that I heard of! In most cases it’s just the cover part that can be replaced! You can get one without it and just add it on.
I have the cechE01 but it Finally died on me!! 😭 How do I fix it? It got the light of death lol
Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer. If you aren’t an expert at repairing 10+ year old consoles, you’re out of luck. The few places that still repair PS3s charge so much for it. I have one that has a broken HDMI port, and it would cost over $200.00 to fix. So if you have the yellow light of death, you’ll have to break your loss, and buy a new one. I wish you luck on finding a good deal to fix it.

I have a few 60gb (Dead so I want to take the Heat Spreaders off and check the paste) One works but is loud, I have a White CechG12 40gb, 2 80gb CechL03 and CechL04 And another 60gb Being delivered tomorrow hopefully that I bought working. My friend had the CechE Motorstorm Bundle on Release but he sold that about 8 Years ago, Would have bought it from him if he still had it. Obviously have the working ones on Rebug :) I also have a Slim, Hate it, Terrible design. So jealous of that 20gb Though, I want that Black Trim so much but impossible to find in the UK.
60gb Models are all CechC03, I bought a working one from my cousin (He had it since UK Launch) That ran into Software Problems (Wouldn't install Firmware or anything and was stuck in Safe Mode, I managed to fix it though but by the time I did that it got YLOD) My first PS3 was the first 40gb Model to come out which I got just as the 60gbs Were discontinued (I really wanted the 60gb) But I sold that years ago.
Yeah! They are pretty hard to find! Though I bought mine on eBay broken for $10.
I looked on the US eBay and found 3 or 4 of them so looks like I need to move there :D (I've always wanted to but I can't right now as I'm only in my early 20s). $10? You are so lucky to have found that so cheap, Whenever I find one in the UK they are like £500 which is $656 even faulty they go for loads.

Well since you said it yourself the 40 gb model is basically the slim. So I got actually the 40 gb model because I wanted a fat one but without overheating issues or more probability of getting the ylod. It arrives tomorrow what do you recommend me to do apart from changing the hard drive(yes I’d like to build in an ssd) Also how do I notice when I have to change the thermal paste?
I just purchased an 80gb A01 ps3 from eBay. What should I do to help the console stay healthy.... Clean the dust out and where do I get new thermal paste? What is the best kind... Should I fan mod the system. I don't know anything about jailbreaking or modding.

does the 80gb model you have had overheating problems?
I paid 19.31 for E01 model it was sold as parts. the drive got stuck, i took it apart and fixed it. The previous owner did take it apart to fix it but didn't put it back correctly and jammed his disc. He gave up n got rid of it. So yea easy fix for me.
My E01 driver doesnt take the disc in, I try to put the disc and the led blinks, I hear something tyring to work but It doesnt take the disc. Do tou have any Idea what can It be? I disassembled the driver and I'm not sure If I assembled It correctly
@@alanbique Maybe the motherboard toast. My second ps3 fat non backward compatible has the same symptoms. Im too lazy to fix it. But yea my E01 is awesome. Keep watching ps3 fixes on yt thats how i fix my ps3s. Hav fun😄🍻
Every one of the many ps3 fats I got gave a yellow light after about so long, I just gave up & got a slim.
It's the token capacitors that cause the yellow light of death I have fixed lots of ps3 with this problem
This is correct! They found that out recently with the token capacitors since computers carrying the same capacitors failed similarly. If anyone need or has that issue it’s the first thing that should be checked.

I had the backwards compatible I bought used. I cleaned and put new thermal paste. It worked fine for a year and got the yellow light . The non backwards runs quieter and way less heat so I feel it should last longer. God bless.
Green light of death? Green usually means everything is OK or Pass, what color is the led when the PS3 is operating correctly without errors?
It’s green. Though usually when your RSX chip is going out. Which is the graphics often the PS3 can’t detect that’s an error. So the PS3 operates normally, though it can’t display (or sometimes it can with artifacts) onto a screen. It can be used, you just sometimes lack video.
