- In this video tutorial I teach you how to take measurements of your pillow and create a custom pillow sham for it. This is a great beginner project that will save you tons of money! You can decorate your room using any color or style you like now.
If you live in the Los Angeles, CA area check out the retail stores for Michael Levine, Inc. They have pretty much everything! Including three stores that are broken up into the kinds of fabrics they carry.
-Apparel: Everything you could need to make any type of garnet
-Home Decorating: All types of home decorating fabrics (linen, chenille, velvet, outdoor, sheers, cotton, etc) as well as so many many well know brands (HGTV, Premier, Sunbrella, Solarium, Tommy Bahama, Shabby Chic, and more)
-The Loft: (by the pound goods)
If you don't live near the retail stores check them out online at www.lowpricefabric.com. Online they carry apparel fabrics, home decorating fabrics, quilting cottons, yarn, buttons, trims, notions, and more. Their online store is recently new and they add new inventory everyday so keep checking back. They are hoping to make their online store a one-stop shop just as the retail stores are.

You simplify the mystery of sewing! I love the way you teach! I am a new subscriber and I feel like I can sew things now and get that professional quality that I was missing.
I love your tutorials. O.K. so it is speedy, but you can rewind at any given time. I have learned so much from you. I even bought the same two Juki's you have thinking some day I will be as good as you are. Carry on with your great tutorials. I love them and thankyou for taking the time to make them.
I'm a beginner at sewing (about a month now) I was just about to sign up for Joann's sewing class to learn how to cut fabric for my 14x14 pillows but not anymore this is the BEST tutorial ever! Very helpful!
Such a very well done tutorial - you didn't drag out at the beginning (which usually makes me look for a different tutorial), and you never hesitated throughout the video. High Five young lady!!
This was excellent. You're a wonderful teacher. Thank you for making this available.
I really enjoyed this tutorial with the extra frame around the pillow sham.
I visited the lowpricefabric website and would pick out 2.5 yards of the solid colors because I am beginning to delve into modern quilts and love the way the solids work together in modern quilt designs.
Excellent tutorial. I just made two pillow shams using this video. THANKS!!!!
This is a clear and simple demo. Just what I need for my son's bed. Thank you!
I need to make two of these tomorrow!! Thanks for the tutorial! You're the best!!
I wanted to make a matching pillow sham for my bed with a curtain panel I love. I should have known, you would have a Tutorial for it. Thank you Vanessa. Now I’ll go finish it up.
I love all your videos. The pillow sham is great. My son just painted my bedroom as a surprise and I need to make a pillow sham for my bed-I just love fabric! It is going to be something in purple!
Thanks Vanessa! Love this tutorial. Ive made pillow cases from a video of yours from Years ago!! But this is awesome, I cant wait to make some shams!! I like the fabric you used!!!
6-13-21: This is FABULOUS and so easy to follow!! I can't wait to make two. TFS!
I would get something from the mid-century & modern line. Makes me think of the 1960's and TV series Bewitched. Thanks for the tutorials and giveaways!
Thanks for this! I have made my very first pillow! Your videos are so easy to follow and understand! Thank you again! :)
Thanks Vanessa! I love your videos. I have learned a lot from them. Can't wait to make my pillow shams. I would be happy with anything!!!!
You make it look so easy. I will definitely come back for more.
Thanks!!
Thankyou very much. I stitched two phillow cases ,useing your clear instructions. It is lovely. Thankyou once again. Stay safe.
Hope you respond.. Your dimensions all made great sense, except the pocket.. Unless you pulled half the stuffing out of a "normal" sized pillow, the pocket should be at least 4X what you had.. When I look at a decent one out of a bed set, the fold is at least 2 1/2 inches of overlap. Your pillow looked about 2 inches thick, and if the sham is up side down, you'd see the pillow. So if you are planning on a standard pillow, look at it's height: For every inch in height of your pillow, add 1/2 inch to the overlap.. A 2 inch thick pillow gets a 1 inch of fabric overlap, a 4 inch gets 2 inches of overlap.. You can also try and "match" the fold so it appears the pattern is uninterrupted. Takes a bit more fabric, but is a lot less noticeable if flipped over. Body sized pillows I always have a 4 inch flap, so even bent, the pillow is covered.
I love this tutorial! You made it so easy for me. I went along with the video and made a sham for my dorm room and it turned out perfect :) thank you!
I love it! Thank you for all the great tutorials.
I am new to sewing but I did it, it’s so easy and looks so beautiful my kids love it. Thank you so much for sharing this video.
Thank you for this tutorial. I made this for my son and daughter. You are a great teacher!
I just finished watching you on TV making a tank top.You have such great ideas! Thanks so much you have been a big help. :)
Excellent tutorial. Im cutting an extra sheet that matches my bed quilt to use for two pillow shams. I was wondering since you quilt as well if you could do a quilted pillow sham. I was trying to using these instructions but not sure if I should quilt the entire case and then add binding or just quilt the pillow part and leave the "ruffle" part un-quilted. I think that would be a great project. Thanks for all your tutorials.
Absolutely loved this tutorial! Followed this and made myself a pretty soft golden satin pillow cover :) :) thank you
Thanks for this very helpful tutorial. I really like the paisley fabrics. Thanks for the link. Levines has such pretty fabrics. Thanks again
I have watched other tutorials about pillow shams, it was a little confusing for me, being as a professional was showing how to make them. You broke it down in easy to follow steps for the average person who sews. Thanks! I love your video's for that reason. I am a quilter mostly so I was tickled (and a little jealous) to see you on Jenny Doan's Missouri Star Quilt Co. Tutorial. You did a great job showing how to make your tote.
I like the blenders and textures line. I like solid colors with a twist. They look very nice.
Best video I've found for making these types of pillows. Thank you!!
Thanks for the tutorial, I think I would have to choose the "Innovations" line of blenders there are such pretty colors. I am a sucker for great prints but I have no solids or blenders to put with them so that is my goal to round out my stash with blenders, textures, etc.
Your video is so clear and easy to follow..thanks a lot :) keep smiling
Great video. So, if I wanted a larger opening for the sham, just add inches to the length. The one you showed here was 35", I would add another 2" for a fluffy pillow inside to make it 37" x 25", right???
Batik in any color are my favorite but I love blue or purple batik. Great tutorial Vanessa!
You've made it look so easy! Will surely try it..... Thanks!!
Great tutorial! Very clear and easy to follow.
It’s nice to hear you speak. This video is really well done. Thank you.
Hello mam, super explanation, no one can teach in such a simple way. You are brilliant at teaching
Excellent detailed tutorial. Well done. Thank you.
Yes... fold it 1/4" and then another 1/4" to make a small hem. :)
Fantastic. You made it seem so simple.
Love this tutorial! I like to change the look of my room like every month this will help me put a whole new element to my room each time and wont cost me a whole bunch! THANK-YOU!
it's just a simple sewing which you have made it way more complex..I believe the idea of sharing any craft is to make it easier for others to follow😀
Wow, great! Perfect amount of info, at a good pace! To the point but very clear and easy to follow! Thx!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, love your videos! Thanks for sharing your pattern! (I'm a gemini too) 🌹
After dark pink is what I would get. Thanks for this video I was looking for something easy like this to do soon.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, it's exactly what I was searching for!!!
You give great easy to follow videos. Thank you
I love the Gleekly collection! So cute. I would make a pillow for my sons room.
As usual great instructions. You are a pleasure to follow.
For clothing, I really like the dark purple double knit. It would make a great cape dress. For quilting, the purple batiks would make a great foundation colors. I also like many of the African cotton, but my favorite would be the purple/gold/black with patterned squares. It would be perfect for quilting into a quickie lap quilt, wall hanging, or pillow cover, as it would not require piecing (not technically a cheater fabric, but I could turn it into one!)
Good job! I love envelope pillow shams. Gonna give this a try. I have several pillows that could use an update.
Very nicely done, thank you. I appreciate the clear instructions.
Awesome tutorial Vanessa! Love your videos! Hope you and your family have a wonderful summer! thanx so much xoxoxo
would love a floral print and that marking pen is awesome! I'm definitely gonna check that out! thanx again! xoxoxo
Thanks for the video. I can't wait to try this! I love the patriotic owls fabric :)
Thankyou so much. It is very useful tutorial for me . appreciate very much. Giving exact measurements is very important for us . Nicely explained. Stay safe.
Thank you Vanessa-for putting the pen link!! :-) You are just the sweetest person ever!
Great tutorial.I love it.Thank you very much.👌🙏
This is excellent! Thanks for sharing. Could I do this without a sewing machine?
Love your tutorials - i visited low price fabric and would love to have Doodle Zoo Dots in cream. Going back to look around some more :)
Hello, I love it when I find one of your videos on a project I’m looking to make. You are so detailed and I love it! I love how you get right to the point. I have made many of your projects and they’ve always turned out great! I do have a few questions…. Do you prewash your fabric before starting the shams to allow for shrinkage? I have someone asking I make her 2 pillow shams queen size envelope style for her bed, not sure how much fabric to tell her to get , and I looked for the link in comments on the erasable pens and was unable to find it. Could you repost the link please? My last question, do you recommend cotton fabrics or industrial fabrics? I know this video was some time ago so I’m hoping you see my comments. Thank you . 🧵🪡
Thanks for sharing:) I was going to pay $80 for a pair of Toile shams but now I am going to buy the fabric or use some I have and make them!
oh yes almost forgot - you cleared up a couple of measurements for me in this video - THANK YOU
Awesome! Making two of these tonight!
sweet, I have made these before, your tutes are always clear and easy to follow...the fabric I went straight to is the cotton batiks...in any color, I love batiks, no two are identical..thanks for the opp to win
I would love any of the fabric.. I also crochet and I checked out the yarn selection as well.
Great video! I need to make four.
It would work the exact same way.. just be sure to have a walking foot to help you sew through those bulky layers. Have fun!
Thanksyou very much forthis nice tutorial. This willhelp to make my pillows.
I have been looking for new pillow cases but I didnt like any prints in the stores so I am glad I found this. LowPriceFabric has so many great fabric choices that it is hard to pick one. But since I have to choose, I love the Eiffel Tower Cotton - ML14820 - Blossom.
I love the crafty Gemini. She can do anything!
Awesome thankyou ,I thought it was much harder than that ,you are amazing.
Thanks Vanessa for that pillow sham tutorial. I tried making a pair on my own some time ago but it did not turn right; now I know the reason,by the way I'm a novice. Thanks again for tis and so much more.
I prefer it a little on the "zippy" side of speed in your tutorial. When it comes to me actually measuring it out, I can take my time and think about it. But as far as watching your video, it was quick and VERY engaging. I agree that speeding up the non-teaching parts was an excellent idea. Very well done, and I can't wait until my new machine comes in so I can do this pillow sham project. Your 2013 video is TIMELESS. (It's March, 2017).
thank you! I'd like to make one of these with a zipper closure any tips?
Is there a place to download the written pattern/instructions somewhere?
Great! Looking forward to do it!!!!
I saw many sewing videos, you are the best teacher around the world THANKYOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!
I love novelty prints. I would have to pick between the one w/ loaded baked potatoes, energy drinks or cheeses :)
So glad I found your channel!
The info is in the description box underneath the video above. Click on "About" then "Show more."
Thanks for the tutorial. I noticed your garden in the background. Does the chicken wire keep the rabbits out? Please do a garden update video. Thanks!
Comma.....love the colors....and design.
I really like the 2wenty-thr3e fabric from them. Great tutorial and awesome giveaway ..... Thank u :-)
I love the "taxi" collection specifically the Birds - ML242385 , Floral - ML242380 and Vine - ML242390. I can see them in a summer dress for my granddaughter and in a paper pieced quilt square.
love these vanessa.....would like to make some in lightweight denim and do some applique on the front
I love all of the day of the dead fabric because it is so vibrant and festive even though it is to celebrate the dead! but out of their whole selection of the day of the dead fabrics I think my favorite on lowpricefabrics would have to be Mini Calaveras Black - ML203215 - Black SKU - C2635-45 There is just SO many things I would LOVE to make with it. Thank you and as always great video!!
Hey Vanessa! Thank you for this tutorial :D This is a lot easier to do than I thought!
Very helpful but where do you get the cutting tool you use and the ruler. What do you call them?
I didn't see you ever sew the half way points in the back where you double irened both sides where the pillow wil fit into? is that not required? wouldn't the fabric over time fray without sewing it or did I miss something ? thank you
I got confused by this too. Am I missing it or did they remain unsewn????
Noticed that. I finished them both BEFORE pinning and sewing them to the front piece.
@@MrsElleGuapo you sew down the edge of each hem (closer to the fold) after you've ironed over a quarter inch twice. It wasn't shown in the video, I'm not sure why, but yes, you definitely sew the hem to keep the raw edge from creeping out over time!
Well said and well understood, but i think you should have increased the front so that the flip will cover the pillow well..
How many yards do you need to make two pillow shams ? That was a great tutorial thanks 😃
Thanks for video I love it!!!! Can you make queen-size bed sheet please?
I just added the link to the video description box. :)
which tool are you using to cut yuor fabric it looks easy thanks
Brilliant! Love it-I was going to attempt this anyway so what a timely video! Could you please give a link to the pen you used to make the 2" border? I'm an amazon shopper also ;-) that thing was amazing-I watched like a little kid :-)
Your instructions are quite easy. I will click into one of your other comments to see where to get the pen you used.
Thanks for another great tutorial! If I won the fabric, I'd choose Frontier Stripe Cardinal! I also like the same in Navy. He has beautiful fabrics! ~Kelley H
WoW! I'm sure you save your husband loads of money, because you're very Crafty. that was Awesome, I have a sewing machine and can't tread the darn thing correctly, it's just sitting in the closet, I would love to make my own house items.
