In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.
My name is Jack , i am retired in perth WA, but building great trucks and traveling the world with you guys, thankyou
My Land Rovers learned me also so much mechanical skills. Thank you Land Rover!
One trick I’ve learned from Gwynn Lewis is to use a plastic heat shrink on the damper housing, which when installed with a heat gun, protects the metal casing from stone chips preventing corrosion and keeping it in better condition. Might be useful next time you replace your dampers.
Knowledge is King
Can't wait till you guys get to Zambia....need to have a Beer..
Thanks for the content. Cheers. PS: Surprised to see you using wheel spacers
Craig: "Brand new second hand"....😂
encore merci
Kind of funny; my 1972 Jeep wagoneer, with a Dana35 front axle, has the exact same setup as your Defender.
Another great video, guys, thanks for taking us along.
Fantastic work etc but whilst you guys have been grounded in Cape Town we have done a great tour of eastern SA and now well into Zimbabwe. Sure the old Defender is falling apart but it somehow keeps going. I think we'll be home before you are on the road again 😁
Defenders never fall apart, they only lose parts and oil as they go, and will bring you home safely again.
Long live the pre-Tata Green Oval.... 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
@@alwynvanwyk1851 And that is where we are right now. The old Def would really like some attention but is soldiering on magnificently. If it can keep going for another 6 weeks that's all we need.
Currently in the Zimbabwe eastern highlands.
Superb work done on Bear joints, something like that is what I need on my knees. Quite informative episode.B is gonna feel like walking on a Runway. ¡¡PURA VIDA!!
Nice one guys. Was really great to meet you at the expo and chat to you guys!
Same here... And G&B looked even prettier in real life.
Enjoy our country.
🇿🇦🇿🇦
That's a big job guy's nice to see it's finally reveal can't wait 😀 rick in Perth Australia 😊
I have a 2012 110, and you’re of course correct re the hub nut torque. 210Nm
Super interesting! Thanks Leigh for the technical part, and Stef of course for the editing!
When it comes to landrovers, Craig is definitely the best guy for the job!
And so say all of us, and so say all of us, tra la laa...
VIVA Craig...

I had a Series 2 which I used primarily for trips from Durban to Sodawana Bay to go diving. This was in the 70's. I used to call it my hobby car. One weekend using it and one weekend fixing it. You need to be a mechanic if you own a Landrover! Today I have a Japanese 4FWD which gets used for trips to Fraser Island, Double Island and Moreton Island, an ocean away! Never work on it. But I had a good grounding in being a hands on mechanic!
And ??? What can we do with that info 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Yes you're correct about the hub nut torque being very high, but that wheel bearing spacer isn't a crush tube, a crush tube crushes to attain a certain preload that can be set at a varying torque (like on a 110/130 Salisbury axle pinion) The spacer you're talking about is precision ground and is available in slightly different thicknesses from LR to set the wheel bearing end float. Most people throw the spacer away and buy 2 lock nuts and a tab washer, reverting back to the 300tdi type system, this allows you to adjust the wheel bearings without having to buy different thickness spacers from LR and the hub nut torque is much lower at 65Nm 👍
Leigh: When are we having lunch brake here?
Buhahaha
It's a new Defender.
A real new Defender, not the Tata Pretender, wohoooooo...
I was trying to pay attention to the work going on, but all I could think was, "I am Cornholio! I need tp for my bunghole!"😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 Stephy hates that shirt so much she made me wear it to the workshop so it can be thrown away sooner 😜
Cheers for the bonus!
You are most welcome mate 😉
It sure looks better than new. 👍
Toyota oil seals come with pregreased inner lip. About the torque. Not all the bolts need the perfect torque, Wheel nuts, head bolts, yes, I see a lot of people stripping threads when setting torque on engine oil and auto trans drain bolts. Just snug is what you need for those. Any 10, 12 and 14 mm, don't use long handle ratchets; for 17, 19 and up, yes longer gets it done. We have a 73 Ford Cortina (British made) and everything breaks and I learned wrenching thanks to it! yes, we still have it in awesome condition!
Nice work.
Extra tip. you can your side shaft hub (5 bolt flange) as a tool to press the inside seal to the correct depth and square.
TD5 also had the spacer (colour coded)(not a crush tube) and knock over nut. I cleaned up the old nuts and carry them as a set of spare lock type nuts.
Cant wait for the next video update.
Regards
Paul
vite,vite la suite
every time I drive past Pon Steyn, I look out to see if I can see your car
Aaaag no kayeman.
Don't drive pass Pon Steyn, pop in, have a look around, say hallo to the young friendly Big Boss Arno Steyn, and buy a Landy...😂
By now you have missed the opportunity to meet Stephi and Leigh, the two wonderful young ones... You'll have to follow them to their next destination....a cliff somewhere 🤷🏻♂️😂🤝🏻
@@alwynvanwyk1851 I had a very lekker 300 TDi D90, gave it a serious remake, but sold her recently. I have had a Disco 1, Disco 2 and Disco 4, but now going the Land Cruiser route
😂❤
So you are having a new car! Doesn't seem any of the old parts have remained.
This whole series has been fascinating. Looking forward to seeing the completed vehicle.
Nice work fellas, very impressive 🍻
Wow great bonus video , all ways like how well you two show all sides of what it takes to over land the world . From the spectacular people you meet along the way , like mechanical and shop workers to the kids and every day people that you meet along the way . and also the places you are visiting on this great world tour . Thanks again for sharing your wonderful journey and memories with us your over landing friends . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :) :) 🌍🍻🛠👍🏼😁. P.S. looking forward to seeing your reveal video coming up 😁😁😁😁😁.
Very nice video...
Slick video ! There are so many technical aspects to know about Land Rovers. I believe it is essential to be well-acquainted with your vehicle in order to have at least a basic understanding of the machine, which can help us get out of a tricky situation at times.
interesting, the new swivel balls dont appear to be chromed.
Awesome 👌
Can’t wait for next week!
I prefer to remove those spacers and add locking nuts and plate. The set preload old school method.
Brilliant episode! I hope the show went well, and looking forward to the videos catching up 🤩
Thank u for the great content. What torque meter are u using. And well done Craig you are making landies proud.
Hi Lee, really enjoying the bears rebuilding process.
You'll love the lof clutch, make sure those first 500 miles of bedding in are done properly. My only reservation is that clutch assist spring, I had one which broke very quickly & was replaced with the new thicker version, which unfortunately didn't last must longer than the first, so I replaced the clutch slave cylinder with a genuine landrover one & never looked back.
Keep up the great work both of you.
awesome!
nothing like some TLC
🙌
Please! Next time you do the seals on that ball change that Helicoil out for a Threadsert! Helicoil's are cheap and nasty and DO NOT hold up for long. Reason being the helicoil's are basically hardened wire and the wire moves with vibration. A Threadsert is all one piece and will be as strong as the original! Also sorry I call them Threadelserts most other people call them Time-sert. I have just been a mechanic on off road vehicles for over 30 years and will no longer use Helicoils at all for anything. I learnt my lesson the hard way.
Thanks for the advice. If we have an issue with that one we'll replace with threadsert.
What made you guys decide to get all this work done in South Africa instead of Australia? I am super impressed with all the work being done in SA
I'm going to go out on a limb and say it being 4x cheaper at a guess.
Edit: and i guess a TIP /Visa time issue after touring Oz too
Cheaper and looks like plenty know how and spares availability.
As was mentioned the exchange rate most definitely worked in our favour but we also think that South Africa may just have the largest Land Rover knowledge base outside of the UK 😍
Wohooooo, and nice guys as well.
🎉🥳🥳🥳🎊
Good. But the bill. Arghhhhhh😊
Lol true story
What mileage is on your Defender?? It’s should be as good as new once done! Great job guys!
215k km
@@GrizzlyNbearOverland what was on in when you bought it?
Can you share the name of that torque meter?
What was your torque gauge, what range does it cover and where to get one from…..? Cheers
We bought in Australia. It's an electronic torque wrench. I think you can find at most auto parts stores.
cc, j'ai peut-être loupé un épisode, la réfection de la cellule avez vous filmé le remplacement des plaques alus?
Ça sera vendredi 17.
Trying to stop oil leaks on a Land Rover…. Good luck with that
Why would you try and stop it? It's sweating power, marking it's territory, marking the road so you can find your way back home, it's self draining, you just need a top up now and then... 😏
Bend over to repair a Rover! At least you can actually work on it.
Why don't you just go and buy a Ineos Granadier(spelling ?) it sounds as if it would be cheaper !! Too bad you don't get the "old" Defender......for you to buy and carry on !!😂😂😂😂
An Ineos could not carry our camper with it's low payload 😉
It’s big money for what it is, is completely unproven and can’t carry the weight.🤷♂️
Also as much as it really really wishes it was, it’s not a Defender and that’s all that really matters.
Peterkoning, bla bla bla, you just said absolutely nothing.....
Jabber for President. Nothing compares to a real DEFENDER..
Not even the new Tata Pretender.
New land Rovers are junk old land Rover like series 2 and 3 ok and easy to fix for any body with mechanical skills, me I am geologist and I found 1.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the US onshore, I rebuilt a Subaru Engine in 12 hrs. by myself no help Replaced Heads, pistons, main bearings, all valves ect. out the door and running.
KeithHart, again, bla bla bla... Hope you've sold all that oil to us Land Rover Nutcases.
Subaru? 18 hours Wow, what has that got to do with this video... do you expect a medal of some sorts now, 🙄🤔😏
