tier ranking popular booktok books while recovering from my eye doctor
If you would like to see the whole trip to the eye doctor ordeal plus some of my daily life in korea, here's the vlog on my other channel!
ua-cam.com/video/hX92uoAG-YA/v-deo.html
Probably isn’t said often enough, but thank you so much for having real captions on your videos and not just the auto generated ones. You’re a star ⭐️
I still have to finish these but glad that they are noticed hahahh 🙏🙏
real captions *and* a list of all the books mentioned in the description! love it so much
Agreed, it's SO helpful
Yes, I have audio processing issues and it’s so rare that you find good captions that actually capture the correct language
Yes! She's one of the few YTers who do it too. So great.
Moment of appreciation for cari's piercing black orbs, truly the star of the show
the real cruel prince experience is reading the first book and having mixed feelings and then slowly becoming insane about it with the last two books
I was meh about the first book until the coronation, and then I was HOOKED FOR LIFE.
putting 'a little life' in 'i feel nothing' is actually hilarious 😂
the book that made me feel depressed for months going in "I feel nothing" like WHAT
Exactly! I cried for 90 % of that book, I'm not even exaggerating.
You are SO real for putting The Love Hypothesis so high. So many people hate on it but it’s such an enjoyable read to me.
It was my first romcom ever and i couldn't get enough. I really like Ali Hazelwood
I will always enjoy Ali Hazelwood. Sometimes you just want some cute romance and banter and she gives cute romance and banter!!
@@jennaberry2yes! ali hazelwood is soooo goood. only check and mate lacked in romance for me. I love romanceeeeee
I am LIVING for the Chappell roan referencess
the scream I SCRUMPT when you put The Cruel Prince in I Have Drunk The Koolaid. I literally squealed and wiggled around on my bed. I have watched your conversion from a hater and I accept your apology
I was so excited when she ranked it at the top 😭 It feels like a sort of victory
@@tiffanycrow7576 ikrrrr
I have never felt more guilty about feasting on content… but i’m still grabbing my fork
enjoy :''')
The love hypothesis is so business proposal and I STAND by that
I relate so hard to the kindle percentages shifting perception of book pacing. It doesn't happen often but when it does it completely changes how you take in the story
This is actually one of the reasons I quickly found myself abandoning my Kindle; that feature really bothered me. Is there a way to turn the percentages off? I couldn't find one.
@@CelticGuardian7 Maybe it wasn’t available on the model you had, but mine lets me tap the percentages / bottom left to turn them off!
@@NonAnonD That's possible, it was an older model. I'm glad to hear it's an option now; thanks for the answer!
Why I always check the table of contents to see when the book actually ends.
Oh my goodness, I had my pupils dialated as a teen... on a Friday right before our family put up and decorated our Christmas tree that evening! The Christmas lights looked like lazer beams pointing right at my eyes... it was awful but funny! Along with all the city street lights and Christmas lights on the way home from the eye doctor 😅🤣😂
omg no what a nightmare hahhaha
Lol oh gosh noooo 😮😢😅. Glad it wasn't worse than it was. 😊
Six of crows was also my first fantasy series after a long break. Truly life changing 😭
henry does actually leave the monarchy in the bonus chapter of red white and royal blue! :) so its most likely something that's gonna be explored in the sequel!
Oh wow, an almost hour long video from Cari right when I get off work?! What a great way to end the day ☺️
hehe hope you had a good one!
as a Ceritified Brandon Sanderson Fanboy™, the will of the many was the very first dark academia book i actually finished and thoroughly enjoyed. i honestly couldn't even tell you WHY i liked it as much as i did. something about it, man ... just ... *chef's kiss*
Agreed! The hierarchy is definitely not just a pyramid scheme and can be analogous to certain real life political systems
i really think the expectation was its downfall for me. i expected sooo much more but it was just a average (good!) fantasy and i couldnt understand the insane amount of hype. that's why im bitter lol
I LOVED this book and I’m not even a Sanderson girlie… the politics mixed with the unique magic system mixed with the school setting and with all the twists in the end?? I was obsessed with this book for weeks lol
Same, I really loved it. I don't think people are mind blown by the magic system, we just like it because its unique in the realm of fantasy books.
Girl the commitment to do this video dilated, props to you ❤
hahah it genuinely helped take my mind off the pain!
the scream i scrumped when you put the cruel prince in koolaid. i have been praying on this 180 LETS GOOOOOO
girl the fact that you can see them from the distance the camera is set up at 😭 i’m so excited to watch this though!!!!! your videos are such great company
In Seattle you should definitely go to Twice Told Tales! It has a bunch of cats wandering around and a wide variety of second hand books!!💕
I feel like the spacey muppet eyes just adds to the comedy of this XD
I’m so glad we have the same opinion on the love hypothesis, I was really worried you were going to tear it apart 😅😂
I agree with you COMPLETELY on the midnight library! I’ve read a few of his books and I will say The Humans is actually fantastic. Absolutely worth the read
Ranking categories are so funny 😂 Babel was so hyped up that I think I went in with unrealistic expectations, I still loved it too and share some of the same thoughts. Please read She Who Became The Sun, it caught me by surprise how good it was!
yeah i always feel like my most anticipated books dont hit quite like i'd want them and its usually my own fault hahah
Ahhh yess I love She Who Became The Sun, I was also surprised by how much I liked it!
Born and bred Seattle girl here! My two fave bookstores are Elliot Bay Books in Capitol Hill (super accessible via our light rail) and Charlie’s Queer Books in Fremont. If you’re planning to visit the Seattle bridge troll Charlie’s is just down the street. If you want a used bookstore Twice Sold Tales is super cute and has a bunch of cats that hang out in the store. If you’re down to venture outside the city a bit another fave of mine is Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park (they do have two locations in the city that are also nice but they’re smaller).
I would def come to a meet up! If you want good outside places I’d highly recommend Cal Anderson Park in Capitol Hill (except if you’re coming 7/19-7/21 bc they’re doing a big festival there). Or if you want an option on the water Gas Works Park is really great and only like a 30min walk from a light rail station.
Just wanted to say that I love listening to your thoughts are various (especially popular) books, even if our tastes don't always fully line up. You tend to be very well spoken on your opinions, so I can always understand where you're coming from. Plus you're very funny, I adore your line deliveries of cringey bits, and your roasts of characters when they do something insane (Jace's endless sarcasm comes to mind lol). :]
For Seattle bookstores, 1000% agree with everyone saying Twice Sold Tales (the cats!!! the stacks of used books!!!) and the Elliott Bay Book Company. They're pretty close to each other and Capitol Hill is a great place to check out. Side note since it's summer: There's also a bunch of good local ice cream places in the area, too (I'm a Molly Moon's girl personally, which is on the same block as Elliott Bay Books).
Truly a blessing and a curse that Molly Moons is right next to Elliot Bay. I’m basically obligated to get ice cream every time I go pick up a preorder.
cari can we expect a crescent city house of flame and shadow plot explanation video soon?👀👀
I think she said she wasn't even going to read it in one of her past videos 😞
Every time I open UA-cam and see you posted I get so excited! Yay it’s you! You could literally talk about eyes the whole time and I would watch.
Your smile on the thumbnail has already made my day better, I'm sure this video will be amazing! ps: happy to hear your eyes are healthyy ❤
hahahah thank you!!
This is why I would trust you with my life (aka my reading choices) 😆 loved the energy in this video. I hope you are feeling better!! 💐
this is why i will alwayssss trust your book recs!! the only other super hyped booktok book missing from this list that i can think of is the seven husbands of evelyn hugo- curious about where you'd put it!
Yes this is the best!!! I am so happy for the new upload. Thank you!
Best Friday night ever, I have my mixed berries tea, a Cari's video on and rain! 🤭🥹
omggg please do a video rereading the selection!! I'd love to hear your thoughts
seattle book stores: first is elliott bay - which is the best by far. There is also third place books (there are two locations, maybe others can recommend which is better - ive only been to the one in ravenna). and twice sold tales! There are two twice sold tales locations and both have cats!! (just dont go on the weekends or it may be too crowded to comfortably look around). Also you have to go to uwajimaya and the bookstore there - kinokuniya! i hope you enjoy your visit!
babel will always hold a special place in my heart because it got me into linguistics lol, but i get what you're saying! im not on booktok and barely on booktube so im always surprised when a book i like is apparently popular :) (also the commitment to do this video with your pupils dialated???? respect!)
Great video💕. I love the Embers in the Ashes. More people need to talk about it. I've literally read the first three books this month and I'm going to read the fourth book soon.
This is great! I love the way that you ranked everything, and I appreciate the time it took you to do this while your eyes were dilated!! From Blood and Ash was a book that was picked for my bookclub, and I voiced my dislike for the book in a similar way that you have. The girls were really upset with me, you are courageous to voice your opinions online for any random person to see.
I'm so relieved to have found other people who agree with this take of FBAA. I listened to it for the first time, also blind, and I nearly put it down SO many times because I was so angry. It's the only series I hate listened. Consent is a joke in it, the ridiculous power scaling, the worldbuilding that genuinely sounded like the author was pulling stuff out of thin air.
Like, I love ACOTAR. It's such a comfort series for me. My blood pressure rises just thinking about FBAA.
Legendborn is the GOAT, i still think about that book weekly.
I just finished Ember in the Ashes, and as an older person I have a hard time with YA. But THISSSSSSS BOOOK agh, was insane. I loved it.
I hope your eyes are better by now, thank you for this delightful tier video :)
I’ve been watching you for years I thought you were 23 years old this whole time 🤯 now I understand why you have such great book opinions, you’ve got wisdom girlie!! ❤
I mean 32 isn't old either 😅
Great to listen to while I work thanks Cari!
I enjoyed this video so much! It was so much fun! More, please ❤
I just love these kind of videos, it’s so chill and funny 🤭
This was soo enjoyable!! Thank you for your work ❤️
There just gets to a point in the love hypothesis where it all clicks and its like oh my god i love this
for Seattle definitely Elliot bay books a staple! Also it’s in cap hill which is one of my favorite Seattle neighborhoods (lots to eat+do great music scene etc.). Twice sold tales which has v cute cats (cap hill location is better than Ballard in my opinion but Ballard is such a cute neighborhood if you have time check it out). Ophelia is a cute store in Fremont also one of my favorite neighborhoods. Neighborhood tier list would be Ballard, Cap hill, Fremont. Also pls pls pls do a meet up if be over the moon! A great spot for it would be volunteer park. Very accessible lots of space. lots of green space, pretty conservatory, Asian art museum, and a gorgeous view. Hope to see you there!
I’m soooo glad that I’m not alone when it comes to The Will of the Many!! I started to think it was just me. You made my day!! 🤩
Welp, that art for One Dark Window has sold me too. To the TBR pile it goes. XP
It's funny, I'll actually be in Washington in July, but not in Seattle itself. Too bad, it would've been cool to see you IRL~ Hope you have a good trip!
Yass let’s go new vid dilation on the eyes felt so weird I understand Cari
I hope you enjoy Seattle! You are coming at the BEST time! 🎉 Seconding Elliott Bay Books, Third Place Books, and there's quite a few bookstores inside Pike Place Market too.
Oh my gosh LOVE that you’re coming to Seattle! I wish I had recommendations for you, but I don’t go into the city much, so I’m sure you’ll be recommending things to ME instead xD
what i loved about the will of the many was how there was finally a clever protagonist. someone who takes all things into consideration and when smth is too dangerous, instead of being like "i'm the main character, nothing's gonna happen to me so i'm just gonna go do this thing and succeed," he just leaves because it's not worth the risk and comes back better prepared. i was also pleasantly surprised by how certain characters were portrayed (A BIT OF A SPOILER) - like veridius who is described as the principal at the academy and so you probably imagine him as this middle-aged/old dude who holds lots of power and will be a nuisance (at least i did) but instead you get this young charismatic guy who gets on well with the students and has you questioning whether he's actually as bad as you were told.
also the setting being inspired by ancient rome is just a great bonus to it all.
ofc i get that some people just didn't like it but it always hurts a little to hear it xD
Elliott Bay in Seattle is definitely a must-do for bookstores! I work in the area, and the food in Cap Hill is great, too.
ALSO there are a few smaller bookstores in Pike Place Market, and Ludi’s nearby does AMAZING ube pancakes on the weekend
hi! this is kind of a general PSA but if by painful you mean your eyes are sore/light sensitive after dilation that’s totally normal but if any of y’all EVER feel sharp/pressure like pain, nausea, darkness of vision after being dilated tell your provider immediately you could be going into angle closure and that is probably the fastest way to lose your sight permanently
Love and appreciate your videos so much :)
Fourth wing is my crave tho
I hate pupil dilation! I'm currently doing my re-read/re-listen to Watership Down I've done every year since I was eleven (never mind how many years ago). Hope your eyes clear up soon an know we appreciate all the work you do for us! :-)
thank you :''')
So excited for you to visit Seattle! Please come and have a meet-up! Everyone is suggesting Elliott Bay which is a great stop... also lots of coffee places nearby to meet-up 🥰
I always love to see An Ember in the Ashes getting the love it deserves. That series was slept on for so long before TikTok picked it up.
Dude, also 1991 baby. I consume tiktoks via Instagram reels haha
Ooohh a blue tier ❤❤ also 'getting home without my eyes' 😂😂
Hope you're feeling better now, thank you for pushing through discomfort for us 😢😢😢
Seattle person here! Would love a meet up at maybe a big park? Volunteer park, seward park, or carkeek park are wonderful options with plenty of space! Also, some great book stores you have to check out - Elliot Bay Book Company and Twice Sold Tales (a used book store with cats!)
Always appreciate your take on popular books, I'm an old millennial without TikTok 😂 I appreciate your taste, it lines up with mine in a lot of ways, I don't always love the books you love but your recs have definitely helped me branch out and read new things, thank you for doing what you do! ♥
I'm practicing the virtue of patience waiting for the next Legendborn book. Cannot wait for your thoughts on it in the future.
i just got so many books and audiobooks bc i had audible credits backed up and a thriftbooks gift card, Very happy to see your recommendations line up w some things i bought, my booktok intuition has gotten a lot better lol
This was the perfect thing to listen to for the last part of my shift
I absolutely adore your content Cari!! This is actually my first time commenting. I live in the seattle area and just wanted to suggest going to Twice Sold Tales. It's a used bookstore that's has a bunch of cats living there and running it lol hope you can visit it!!
Girl, the effort of doing this even though you were in pain): greatly appreciated!!
Read The Humans by Matt Haig!!
came home from work to make food, saw this and got SO excited
Low key have been wanting to try the 'The Cruel Prince' and didn't want to be disappointed like I have from other book recommendations on line and because I love your retelling of 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' series more than when I read it so I trust your opinion
Cant wait for you to do this tier ranking with all the fantasy books you've read but i think that would be hoursss long haha
I was so scared where The Cruel Prince would end up but was not disappointed… so glad you get it
the big circles when you said "black orbs" I CHOKED HAHAHA 😭😭
i read the crave series because of your video and it does for books what glee did for television and i unironically love it
oh man I had to bike home "without my eyes" last year and had to sit and cry for a bit when I finally made it. I feel for you
Can you see my mouth drop over Crave LOL! Silly fun is okay to enjoy. you are going to be sort of in my neighborhood. Drive down to Powell books in Oregon or go to downtown Seattle library just because it's amazing.
The Love Hypothesis was also my first ever romcom and i imediately bought Love on the Brain after being publisbed. I like Ali Hazlewood cause her books pull you into the story so fast, without her i wouldn't even have tried other romance books and for that i'm, as you said, forever grateful
Would love a Seattle meetup!! But regardless you should definitely check out the Crumpet Shop! So yummy 😻
Is that a 10th kingdom sticker I spy on the laptop? And how funny that I just came home from Seattle book shopping! Highly recommend Arundel books and Elliott Bay Book Company!
I literally reread The Love Hypothesis yesterday and I will never understand the deep hate people have for this book, it’s so good and fun!!
I would love if you did a video like this about books on kindle unlimited
One of my favorite cafes in Seattle is Moonrise Bakery, which is right next to Queen Anne Book Company. Plus Kerry Park is a short walk from there and has the best views of the city!
Thanks for the video! Can you do a video about the dragon books you found and enjoyed after Fourth Wing?
i enjoyed Fireborne (The Aurelian Cycle) :)
I live in the Seattle area! I think it would be awesome to meet you. I am also super anxious and 100% understand it’s scary meeting new people!!
I love these rankings!!😂 have you ever read the city of brass trilogy?xx
yes! i dont remember if i finished it fully or not but definitely read the first two!
Omg finally someone who doesn’t absolutely despise the selection 😂 all the hate is possibly deserved but she’s my baby
Also its written as ya more for kids, I personally read it when I was 13 and cannot imagine read it now 😂
My biggest good luck babe is fourth wing.
I literally don’t understand/ can’t explain why I liked it so much. I’m an AVID fantasy reader, I’ve read most of the classic “greats” at this point. I keep up with reading the popular ones. I’ve definitely read better and I understand on a fundamental level why it’s not good…. But alas.
I just, idk, I have no idea. 😂
I love these types of videos from you because I always get to add new books to add to my to read pile. but also, it’s so interesting seeing other people’s taste in books! like, I loved legendborn so much it’s one of my all time favorites now, but cruel prince was so disappointing to me because there was so much hype and I found it average at best lol. Mainly because (for me) the ‚romance‘ was so badly written that it distracted me from the rest of the book(s) 😅
That "hello?" was so cute 😂
I've only been here for like a year, but I've already found some of the other booktubers ..... taste and opinions to be somewhat of an irritant. You along with bookleo are amongst my faves. Thank u thank u for the time and effort put into making this video!!!
The Love Hypothesis was one of the first booktok books i read based on a recommendation from my best friend and i completely ATE IT UP, i can see why some people may not like it, but its just such a fun read, it's like disconnecting your brain from real life and getting to enjoy a silly romance.
The girls who get it get it
2:30 AM and can’t sleep so I’m definitely watching
I love you for the “the love hypothesis” ranking my book taste is really eclectic 😂 but have always felt ashamed of my silly little romance books (and lately I’ve been SHAMELESS about it and having so much fuuuuun)🎉
It's super interesting that you don't find yourself often swayed by fanart to pick up books because that it absolutely the number one factor that will lead me to pick up a book that's gotten popular lol, but it's probably partly that as an artist I am curious about what other artists are reading. Great video! and very strong of you to record this while dealing with eye pain D:
Matt Haig! I completely understand your feelings towards it (i was one who read this at an important time in my life and it definitely hit me) BUT i genuinely think you would enjoy his book The Humans!! PLEASE read it ❤❤
Cari are you going to pleeeeeeeeeaseeee do the next crescent city plot summary 🥺🥺🥺 I love your summaries so much
