- Not every close association between organisms provides a benefit or detriment to one of them- sometimes an association can be essentially “neutral” to one party (commensalism). We talk about commensalism in symbiosis as well as delving deeply into chemical communication & chemical signals as depicted in Star Trek: Discovery, season 4, episodes 10 and 11 in regard to the 10-C aliens. We talk about the use of hydrocarbons in particular as pheromones in real species on Earth, and how pheromones are not just for mate signaling. We hit on a lot of the backstory of how the chemical communication plot developed in the production of episodes 11-12. We also hear about the excellent job that Deborah Kampmeier did directing episode 10, as well as the role of the director more generally. As per usual, lots of science and lots of fun!
In this video series more generally, Star Trek science consultant Dr. Mohamed Noor teams up with Star Trek actress Jayne Brook (Admiral Katrina Cornwell in Discovery seasons 1-2) to teach science using Star Trek: Discovery. Videos use on-screen depictions as springboards to teach interesting real-world biology. And videos close with Brook's insights about acting and production, so Brook and Noor alternate taking on the role of student and teacher of their respective craft.

Thanks Dr. Ann Marie! Always appreciate seeing you here! 🖖
Great video Mohamed and Jayne. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it-- thanks Chuck! 🖖
this was so fun (and enlightening!) episode 10 has some of my favorite shots of the season (this neat focus shifting while Rillak is talking to Vance, and Burnham and Rillak talking about the 10C's field that's no longer a blob). Commensalism is such a neat concept, thanks for sharing that! The hydrocarbons were such fun science as a way to communicate.
Thanks for the kind feedback, Opal! 🖖
@@BioTrekkie thanks for making cleaning my kitchen pleasant and educational ;)
You make learning so fun! Using complex hydrocarbons for chemical communication was such a great idea ❤️ I also loved the part about directors and their vision. Bring on more! ❤️🖖
Thanks so much, Gloria! Hope you're well! 🖖
More great science learning! Keep it up!
Thanks much, Neil! 🖖
Lol! I must have Dr. Noor's rendition of "Feelings" as a ringtone for whenever my shrink calls. I don't currently have one, but I'll get one for that purpose (and could probably use one).
😂 Thanks!
wow - i love how much i learn and how interesting you both make it
Thanks much, Louise A ! 🖖
Mohamed and Jayne are such great collaborators in this series. The awesome science information that Mohamed brings to this coupled with Jayne's experience making scenes happen and what goes on at the set. I really enjoyed the "complex hydrocarbon" communication system that was developed for this show. Sorry I missed the premier, my allergies have been making sleep time miserable of late - so it goes.
Hope you're feeling better, and thanks for watching, my friend! 🖖
@@BioTrekkie Thanks, Brother. Feeling much better, especially after seeing my kids and grandkids today. Back on the road tomorrow!
@@montanawardog Safe travels!
Yay! Is it Sunday yet?!?
I so appreciate your enthusiasm, Dr. Ann Marie, my friend! 🖖
