    I definitely know that feeling of being so filled with love for FFXIV and wanting so badly to talk to people about it. I've been playing for a year now and I'm still desperate to get more of my friends to play because ugh, it's just so good. I hate that people kind of dismiss it because it's an MMO. It's honestly such a unique and incredible story experience because you get so attached to your WoL and they're the hero. I played WoW for well over a decade and I never felt even remotely attached to my characters in that game like I do to my WoL.

Similar experience with WOW- loved the game for the time I played but never got attached to the characters. Meanwhile XIV has made me cry happy and sad tears on multiple occasions and the characters that I’ve been journeying with for a year feel like friends.

    I was genuinely saddened to hear that you felt so compelled to watch guides and were stressed out over not understanding boss mechanics. The community is super welcoming and understanding when sprouts make mistakes. It has happened to all of us! We all died to x mechanic that one time, we were all confused at first. We as the community are here to help you make it through the dungeon, not to make the game stressful! If we all die, its a part of the process of learning, and we are always happy to help. Don't feel like you are letting your party down if you make a mistake, its human!

      Yep only time I ever watched guides was for extreme or savage fights. Otherwise no one cares and most people explain things.
      I think its because she rushed through it too fast! I don't think you can learn the game properly and focus on all the story and finish in 2 months.

      Probably 500 just to finish the base game

    • @versaleyang
      @versaleyang Рік тому +22

      Maybe because she played WoW before that this kinda of mentality that you cannot make mistakes when doing group content is stuck with her. That game's community is defo not as newbie friendly as FF14 is.

      @brianbaratheon Рік тому +11

      Yeah. I used to do guides, mainly because I'm a healer and when I mess up, the party wipes... but I stopped watching guides since Shadowbringer because the story captured me so much and I didn't want to spoil myself anymore.. so now I go in blind every time. Sure, there have been wipes but it happens lol.

      Ayup same here. I only ever got grief for one fight and it was one of the (normal) Eden raids when it was still end game content (tho in my defense, another member was saying “y’all should’ve watched a guide” so I literally typed on controller that I hadn’t needed guides to clear previous normal content. Got called toxic for it but yeah.
      Either way, well. I never did need a guide for anything in the MSQ or normal level raids. I still successfully cleared all the things I wanted. Guides are for EX and Savage content imho. :p

      For sure! I started playing this game last November, and I had never played an MMO before. I didn't know what I was doing at all. But everyone was so nice and supportive. No one ever told me that I sucked or that I needed to do better. Instead they actually explained the mechanics and gave me helpful tips. I never really looked up any mechanics or anything, I just wanted to experience the game for the first time and not have to do a lot of homework. Now, if I ever start doing the Extreme and Savage content then I definitely will, but that's a whole other thing.
      I've been playing for like 1500 hours now, and I think I've met 7 people that I found rude or unpleasant. And only 2 of those were actually mean and toxic. Overall the community is so nice. It's almost unreal at times.

  • @KiIowatt

    I started a year ago and I always did all the dungeons blind, and I still go into new content blind to this day. I don't think there's pressure to know the mechanics upto and including extreme trials. I would only suggest it for savage and ultimate.

    • @bobwinters5572
      @bobwinters5572 Рік тому +2

      I also started about a year ago and agree with this. I did watch videos before trials for a while after I died 5 or 6 times during one of the Alexander bosses, which made me want to ignore the 6th battle rez... I don't really bother watching videos anymore. FF14 -- at least the more recent Normal raids -- is really good about telegraphing boss mechanics in such a way as it is possible to figure out what is going based on one's knowledge of all the other bosses that one has already seen. And even if you don't figure it out immediately, you'll just get battle rezzed and can continue having fun pressing buttons and improving rather than going afk because being a corpse is dull. And the other players are quite chill about your screw-ups since your screw-up is unlikely to wipe the group, and will instead just slow things down a bit.

    • @AgentRedShirt
      @AgentRedShirt Рік тому

      Definitely maybe for savage but even the first time I go in blind. Then after I see things I’ll look up a guide or something. But yeah the savage in the ultimate that’s when you really have to be on the ball because one mistake could really ruin your day.

    16:00 I maintain that ARR is better than people remember. I just went through it again on an alt, and with a full grasp of the world's politics and dynamics, as well as knowledge of what happens later, the story beats are *immensely* satisfying.
    ARR is my second favorite story in the game, behind Shadowbringers.

    • @Advon
      @Advon Рік тому +7

      People tend to forget that a lot of us bought into ARR. ARR alone was enough to convince us to play, back when ARR was all that existed. And we enjoyed it even through the jank and delays (Crystal tower was orignial supposed to come at launch, but got pushed to 6.1. We stayed playing even though endgame amounted to "Wanderer's Palace and Amdapor Keep".
      Though I won't deny the pacing issues between ARR and HW, that felt completely different when you only had to deal with it on a patch by patch basis.

    • @OzixiThrill
      @OzixiThrill Рік тому +2

      I'll be honest, as someone who is currently drudging through ARR's MSQ, your claim that ARR "is better than people remember" only suggests to me that later story lines are not as great as people praise them to be; Which is more concerning than anything.
      The only saving grace is that maybe the relative difference comes from earlier quests having been reworked over the years, having become slightly better (but really, they are still not good; Worst of all, several climactic moments, where the story builds up well get ruined by poor creative decisions).

    • @Umbral927
      @Umbral927 Рік тому +9

      @@OzixiThrill I think he's saying that from a post-MSQ standpoint, which is pretty fair. ARR lays the groundwork for the world building the next expansions provide, and looking back on it, you start to appreciate that the base game incorporated those aspects that were later built upon.
      Going through the base game for the first time, with no inkling on how it will expand in the future, it's easy to see ARR as just a mid-level story with an OK payoff, at best. But like others have said, I promise the story quality ramps up significantly with Heavensward, and the time ARR invested in its world building will be worth it.

    • @darkslayer709
      @darkslayer709 Рік тому +4

      @@OzixiThrill not at all, IMO. I’ve been replaying ARR on an alt as well and it has the same pacing problems its always had and is relatively dull compared to the expansions, but ARR sets up so much that doesn’t really pay off until later. Were it not for ARR the expansions wouldn’t hit as hard as they do.

    From what I've found, unless you're in high end content, no one really expects anyone to know mechanics in story dungeons and raids. As a healer main for 2 years its actually very endearing seeing sprouts fail in the story combat content that I also did back when I joined. 😊

After an actual YEAR of my best friend talking about and trying to convince me to play FFXIV with her, I finally caved and started playing (I'm 33 and I guess I was avoiding it because I didn't want it to turn into a WoW situation... Like... I have a 8-5 job now you know??). I have been playing for only a month and I already blazed through Stormblood and on my way through the patches leading up to Shadowbringers. Having a friend that is already invested in the game helps immensely... She is also enjoying my reactions to the story and watching the cutscenes with me. Honestly, this is my favorite MMO. Everyone is so understanding and kind (I never felt like I was inconveniencing everyone by being a sprout), the story itself is so GOOD and I am absolutely invested, the game is pretty, I can play dress up with my character (I have an off-brand Lara Croft glamour I often use because of course I do).... Honestly, I had skipped 11 and 14 as well for the longest time because they were MMO. But then a few friends started playing FF14 and decided to try it out. I fell in love with the game. Started on free trials, was a complete newbie, didn't understand mechanics, where to look, how to move and interact (keyboard & mouse), etc. It was quite overwhelming at first. But it was fun learning, taking my time and getting better with other players helping me. I understand the pressure of wanting to do good, and looking for guides before going into dungeons and trials. especially when you're going as a healer or a tank. Fast-forward two years later, with +6000h into the game, I still have so much to do and i'm still enjoying the adventures and the shenanigans with friends.

I’ve been scoping out a lot of FF14 UA-cam, and it’s been really fun getting everyone’s impressions about the game ( I’ve done my own bullying of getting some friends to join and play ) and it’s so wonderful to see the glowing testimonies above the absolutely real and genuine fear of “Big MMO” and player anxiety. I genuinely didn’t like FF14 when I first started playing because I had no idea what I was doing, I wasn’t having fun with the class I was playing and it was just a really sour time until finding a good group of friends that supported me through the game, and allowed us all to just indulge in the story together! I’m so glad you’re having a good time, and going at your own pace! Have fun exploring the numerous things that you can do and experience because this game IS HUGE! But pacing is always important, and helps keep the hunger for the fun alive! I hope you’re able to find good friends to play with, that you can experience the thrill of raids and that you enjoy every moment spent! 💛

And this was BEFORE they introduced the AI companions to do it with.
    I would love to see more of your takes on various parts of the game, and how you as this type of player see it. Please keep up the good work! It was such a pleasure to watch your videos!

    I love your comments about ARR because I feel the same. I've been playing since ARR launched, so I often make story alts just so I can play ARR and be a sprout again. It's exactly like the pilot episode of a show in the way that it beautifully sets up and introduces you to themes and characters that you're going to know for the next 10 years. I'm also excited you got to partake in Lunarcon! I was lucky enough to do it the last 2 years and I think it perfectly encapsulates the close community we have.

    it's absolutely wild clicking on video youtube recommended me and finding someone summarizing my summer!
    I picked up FF14 in May when my summer break began and I played through Realm Reborn in like three weeks, loving every second of it. I immediately bought the giant pack of expansions and committed to finishing Endwalker before the one-month of playtime included in the pack ran out. soooo I basically speedran the entire game. it was a haze of trying to remember mechanics and lore while learning how group content like raids worked. I didn't learn what materia was, I never visited the Golden Saucer, I only followed the main story. I finished the MSQ through 6.0 literally on day 30.
    while I'm not new to MMOs, having casually played Guild Wars 2 since the beta, I was constantly surprised about how much I cared about this game in such a short time. I fell in love with the random people playing music in Gridania. I watched video guides for the dungeons so I could learn what tanking was. every time someone encouraged me to take charge in a trial, I was super nervous, but I had this huge smile on my face. and the story! I screamed, I laughed, I theorized, I got passionate. by the end, I was crying alongside all the characters I'd gotten so attached to.
    i'd been hesitant to play FF14 for a long time because the UI scared me and I didn't have confidence in the story. I thought it would be a grind fest, or the story would be mid at best. I played it on a whim and i'm so glad I did. beyond the incredible story and the fun mechanics, it's a rich and vibrant community that i'm so excited to be a part of going forward!
    having now played for a few months, I can't see myself stopping anytime soon.
    p.s. i'm currently doing the 6.2 raids and I still have the sprout by my name. bet that worries some people when I jump in to main tank lol

I will say one thing don't ever feel pressured to look up a dungeons mechanics. For like you mentioned spoilers on who the bosses are kind of ruins the mystery. If you mess something up its fine ^^! Ask for help or try to learn on the fly! I know its easier said then done heck I myself want to be perfect and not mess something up like a boss mechanic but outside of savage raiding I don't think it really matters if you mess up. Anyways I hope you continue to play FF14 and have a great time with it. Play it your way and have fun on your journey as the Warrior of light!

    Hi Heather, I watched that vid last night and it really summarized my own crazy run in FF14 over the summer. I couldn't express myself better than you did regarding how newbies experiences all the anxieties when joining the community. While still in ARR, so many times, I wanted to give up playing for it felt like a soap opera with a boring combat system. I came from Lost Ark if that help to understand. Initially I was only planning to use the subscription to finish the main scenario and move on like I usually do on so many games. But now I share your excitement for I found myself being drawn so much into the story and its characters, they feel like family and a place for comfort to get away from all the crazy #$%t that happened in this world. No other games ever gave me such a warmth feeling and my FC who helped me along the way is priceless. I was trying to visit your world and seek Oliver to give a big hug, but seems like the system dont allow it. :)

    To sort of share my own starting experience cause your video really got me to remember it, mostly from the community aspect, my friend convinced me to play by saying he would play with me since I was sort of off and on about it, long story short he got us into this random FC and ended up not playing with me but I loved the story so much because of where I was at the time that I just kept going and the FC was there for me if I ended up wanting to do anything that needed a group and they were all just super awesome, so I guess I sorta had an opposite experience than what you were talking about in your video, I may not be in the same FC now but most of us are still friends and hang out from time to time which is just amazing, in my new FC I met my current BF and we are getting married in game next week and as wild as it might be to say this game has just made me a happier and better person overall, the story is absolutely amazing, all the things you can do and all the people you can meet just encourage you to try everything, and believe me I consider myself a decent player while my BF is more hardcore, he laughs at me everytime I die cause I get so sad and upset cause I’m trying so hard to be “good” cause it doesn’t really matter cause I’ve died less than some others in the party, anyway I wanted to say thank you for making this video cause now maybe I can use it to bring in more friends who are skeptical and also as a p.s. Behemoth is the best world on Primal haha

    So glad you're enjoying XIV! I had a similar experience where I love FF and JRPGs but had skipped over FFXI and XIV because I thought I didn't like MMOs. And maybe I still don't but this game is so much more than that that I will never put it down. My fiance introduced me cause he had played since HW and I joined in late Stormblood so I've been playing about 4-ish years now. I'm way invested into the game and learning its systems and have gotten so many friends into it as well, I'm always happy to answer questions or help with content (Golden Grin on Mateus btw)
    As someone who has anxiety I totally get being worried about playing with others but the community is pretty great and more often than not you're going to have people who listen to you in an instance and answer your questions or take it a little slower if it's your first time. But more and more instances are being added to Duty Support (solo system) so everyone can learn at your own pace.
    Also for any who don't know, if you get level-locked out of MSQ, just do the last dungeon you unlocked. Dungeons give a ton of experience or do your leveling roulette for the day if you haven't. It does happen with the more contracted 2.0 MSQ nowadays but nothing a few dungeon runs won't solve.
    I love this game and I love seeing more people love this game. It's a great thing and I can't waitt to enter the next major arc with everyone who has joined over the past couple of years.

    It is always welcome to hear a new players perspective. Specially after I pretty much benched everything until 6.0 without playing anything elso from the time I started playing. It is true that some instances can induce anxiety... been there when I started playing as a tank, and hope you have encountered the best of the endgame players rather than the low end of them... not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Glad to hear you loved the "ecosystem" allowed by the devs and built by the players and fans of different areas or content... I hope you can go throw side content as it is almost everytime important for both world building or weaving in important story plot points.

As someone who has played since the 2.0 re-release it continues to warm my heart that people are still finding the game for the first time and growing the community. You mentioned how it would have felt to have had to wait for every patch and expansion and I think I can provide some insight on that. The FFXIV team has managed to do something amazing by delivering quality content on a very regular schedule and that has allowed us players to basically always have something to do if we want to play without punishing us for taking a break for a few months or longer. With a minimal effort you can catch back up and be back in the mix. There is a wealth of side content to explore each expansion has a 24 player raid that isn't overly taxing and there is the super funny and enjoyable Hildebrand quest series. I hope you stick around for a while as we have some amazing things coming down the road. ♥

    Love to see this. Sounds like it was a great experience! I love the paralysis when you were raiding--I feel like those kind of gaming experiences have been amped up to 100000 today. You're not really looking at your character in those situations, but the numbers--those glorious numbers that tell you how strong your character is 🙃I've been told that the game is a HUGE social hub, and that there's a community of people that play the game just to socialize and create characters. I think it's great--I want that part of the internet to flourish. Are you going to keep playing the game, or are you moving onto a new one?
    I used to play WoW before high school, and to the level of trying to get "Realm First" with the raiding guild I was in. I stopped playing shortly after I started HS. I picked it up again in 2020 when the lockdown was happening, and was surprised to see how much has changed. There are some gameplay characteristics that are shared with FFXIV like customizing gear, and a randomized group finder for dungeons and raids. Biggest drawbacks are that the community is driven towards end game, flavor of the month plays, and I don't think the single player experience is as valued as it seems in FXIV. In the end, I deleted my characters along with the game because I wasn't having as much fun as I thought I was having. 😆
    Glad to hear Final Fantasy is still a successful franchise. My favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy Tactics. I've actually spent the past two days binging lore and lets plays for it. Been holding off from playing because a remaster is rumored to come out soon. I have been wanting to try FXIV out some time, and you have compelled me even more. Though I might try to get some friends to play with me before I do. Funny coincidence that you're doing a video on a game set in the same world. Keep it up 🙂

      Yeah I don't think I could ever go back to WoW since a lot of the reason why I played was because of the people I was playing with and there's no way they're gonna try it again lol.
      I think Tactics is the only FF I haven't played. If there's a remaster, I'm in for sure! You should totally try out 14 - start with the free trial! Unlimited hours! 🤩

    Hey loved your video! Pretty much mirrored my experience. I love this game and it's hard to explain to others. I'm on behemoth so I'll reach out. If you ever need or want someone to run a dungeon, trial, raid with you let me know! I'm what you call a hardcore casual player. I meander and take my time getting through msq. I'm easily distracted and love discovering new things in this game. I had a LOT of anxiety about group content just like you. Luckily I found an FC that is super supportive of any style of play. They really helped me a lot when I was ready to try group content. I was terrified of tank and healer roles. Now I'm in a raid static (can't believe it actually) and I'm working on leveling up every job. I have alts that I created JUST to replay ARR again cuz I really didn't pay attention the first time and regretted it. I loved it so much that I've played through ARR 3 times now! I’ve laughed and cried with these characters and that is a testament to how much the devs have put into this game. We have characters that we relate to and really care about! The gameplay is obviously amazing and the dungeons/trials/raids are so fun! I’ve been trying to get a few friends to start playing but they are still resistant 😭. ARR starts slow both in gameplay and story, but it’s basically the building blocks and world building that pays off in the later expansions. Anyway, glad you’re enjoying it! I'm definitely in the same boat as you on the story. It's a good story, ARR. People shit on the voice acting, they call the story bad or boring or whatever, they say skip over all that stuff, and so I did. I skipped a solid chunk of story, only getting the gist of it.
    When I started hitting Stormblood I got curious about all the content I skimmed over, and honestly I really wish I hadn't. I even go back to watch full plays of the original 1.0 story, just to get an idea of what it was like. I am just THAT invested in the story.
    I always feel bad when my friends or guildies get to the end of the game in a week, meanwhile I'm chugging along slowly, enjoying the main quests and side quests for all they're worth. My friends tell me to hurry up and reach end game content and I feel that pressure to just skip it over.
    I'm happy to say I did not do that for Shadowbringers and it made my experience all the better for it. I'm happy I didn't fall to peer pressure and I highly encourage everyone to do the same, and to discourage people for complaining that a new player is "wasting their time" watching cutscenes or not knowing exactly how a dungeon boss works in older content.
    Thankfully toxic players like that are few and far in between, so it's wonderful to have an experience everyone can enjoy.

Being in my 40s and having irl friends who are so busy "adulting" (kids etc) that don't play as much games as I do, and you want to share a special moment in a game and you end up sounding like an idiot when you gush about it lmao. I been playing FFXIV since 1.0 and there's been so many moments when I wanted to scream, yell, cry and share with someone irl but none of my irl friends are rpg gamers.. So frustrating sometimes. 9:54 I can understand that concern, especially coming from WoW, but the FF14 community is so forgiving and kind. I can honestly count the bad experiences I've had with randos on one hand over the course of three years.

      @gman7497 Рік тому +2

      I think I've only had like, one dungeon run that was really bad, party wise. Every other time, even though there were a handful of wipes and whatnot, people were very understanding. I'm sure with savage and extreme content the pressure goes up but as, far as normal content it's like 98% good vibes.

    • @queenbean7071
      @queenbean7071 Рік тому +2

      I agree.
      I'm pretty sure the only time where people would be annoyed over wipes is on a farming party that they request people to knoe the mechanics on

    • @LockelyFox
      @LockelyFox Рік тому +7

      It's actually expected for new players to not understand everything. That's the whole reason for both the sprout icon and the first timer bonuses.
      Go in blind to everything but Extremes and Savages. No one is gonna get on your case. The mechanics are incredibly forgiving, and if you do wipe, who cares, you just teleport right back to where you died and pull again.

      This is always such a lie. How come I've had more crappy people experiences in ff14 than in all the time I played wow? This community has a huge thing about propagating the lie that the community is better, but I'm pretty sure its that the community isn't as able to talk to each other as much as they can in wow.
      How can anyone say the community is good when every novice network chat exists (the closest thing to wows trade chat)?

    • @hellfrozenphoenix13
      @hellfrozenphoenix13 Рік тому +5

      @@pacifiedbeaumonte im sorry for the poor experience you have had, sincerely. But its far from "always such a lie", because, for most people, the experience is that way. I can say i am able to count on two hands the toxicity i have encountered in ff14 in the year and a half i have played it, but i also PvP a ton. And most of those were more of a snarky comment, rather than anything full blown (only 2 of those cases).
      The Novice Network is, sadly, notorious for how toxic it can be. But its vital to also know that action speaks loudly. If you wipe in a dungeon on wow, theres a high chance the group will break apart. I have had that happen only once in all my time with 14. If someone said they were doing new content blind in WoW, they would get chewed out for being selfish. In 14, you get words of encouragement or a quick rundown.
      While your experiences are valid, know they are in a minority. The reason the community echos how great their community experience is, including sprouts who are brand new and have no loyalty to led them to "lie", is because that is the case for them.
      I hope your experience gets better. Im hoping it was a bad luck streak and itll get better sooner rather than later.

    Thanks for making this video! I have some questions for Heather, and other players whom prefer the more solo aspects of the game,
    What do you like to do after completion of the MSQ? My wife started playing around the middle of SHB and really enjoyed her time. She just recently got caught up with MSQ and suddenly lost interest in playing. I was trying to get her to do the other content with me and the FC, but many of the concerns that Heather mentioned (feeling anxious, having to look up guides, not knowing what to do, and generally feeling lost etc) came up for her even though we mostly play with a family/close friends FC and linkshells.
    I really feel that this, coupled with some moments where a few bad actors made themselves known and were rude to her during roulettes, really turned her off from playing the other amazing parts of this game.
    I am still trying to get her motivated to play, but she mostly gets on now to do Island Sanctuary, a holiday event for glamours, or will wait until new MSQ is added and have me play her character through it lol
    What gives here? Did she never really like the game? She's got several hundreds of hours played and it wasnt until reaching current MSQ that it all just changed for her. What do solo focused players do once they reach the multiplayer part of the game?

    Hey! I'm glad you're enjoying FFXIV. I love seeing other people's excitement towards the game I dear so much for years ^^
    If you rarely play MMO, It'll be really overwhelming with all of the information at first, but you will get there soon! Even as someone who has been playing for 5 years, there are still a lot of things for me to do hahahha. Just play the game with your own pace, there are various end game in this game depends on what you like! (jk glamour is always the true end game ;3)
    People are super considerate when you say you're new, so don't worry about it! And as you say, we love having people getting more into the game. There'll be toxicity somewhere when you get deeper into the fandom/community because, well, there are so many different sides of people. But don't mind it too much! There are many fun and positive things in the community. Just enjoy the whichever part you love

    Hey Heather, I'm so glad to hear you've been enjoying FFXIV! Your story felt very similar to my own, so it was kinda funny watching whil having so many "Hey, me too!" moments lol. I also just finished the MSQ a couple of weeks ago, but I've been plugging away at it a little at a time for ~9 months now. I played WoW from launch through WotLK (probably more than I should have, including while on school >.>), and it was pretty much my only real MMO experience before this. I started the FFXIV free trial about a month before endwalker came out, but had to sub when the expansion dropped because the free trial players couldn't get past queue boss for several weeks during the extreme server congestion. The main reason it's taken me so long to actually finish the MSQ is because I've basically done all of the content (well, everything below savage difficulty content at least) along the way, including all the optional dungeons, raids, leveling different classes, along with working on the MSQ. And it's all been a ton of fun! I've been trying to get some more of my friends into too, wearing down on them little by little with lines like "it's not like other MMOs" and "it's an RPG first!". We'll see if I can get them to come around eventually...
    Anyhow, glad you've been enjoying your time in Eorzea. Looking forward to seeing what other content you put out on this channel!

    I've just come back to the game a couple of days ago. FFXIV literally got me through level 5 covid lockdowns etc and it was just a really great time. Duty supports were just becoming a thing when I stopped. I'm now replaying everything with an alt to experience the game again (and to see the ARR rework). I must say I had the exact same experience and anxieties as you, the duty support system is wonderful, its such such a nice addition to the game. Now I'm just big sad that I didn't pre-order Endwalker and get the earring 😆
    I'm also a massive alt-aholic (I have about 23 characters on GW2) so the all jobs on one character thing is probably my absolute favourite part of the game.

    One thing as a FF14 player that I find endearing about new players is how excited they are to see things in the game I've glossed over for so long. Whenever I play old content its like I'm able to experience it again through them with fresh eyes. I think in large part of what makes the community so eager is a shared memory and emotion of being that newbie, learning that fight, or seeing that cutscene. Which I think goes so perfectly with the themes of the game!!!

    Waaaay back when, about 4/5 years now, I remember holding back on playing XIV because it was suscription based, but unlike other people, I was *sure* I'd get hooked on the game and that's why I was avoiding it. Then they expanded the trial to be unlimited time but up to lv35 (This is before they expanded it to all of ARR/HW) and I was certain I was making a mistake while I was downloading the game.
    This many years later, and sure enough, it was a terrible mistake. I can't leave this game for long periods of time, because it's just so good. I've finished the story, but there's so much cool side content, and even PvP (Crystal Conflict in specific) is so much fun.
    And now I'm bound by the "Pay it forward" mentality of the game. I got helped so much when I started, even though I was avoiding people for the most part, but my Free Company constantly gifted me high level gear each time I had issues or reached a milestone, like gifting me a crafted high quality level 50 gear when I leveled up my first crafter job. I just can't help but help people back, be it helping them through dungeons or even playing Uber Driver for them so they can reach aethercurrents or key story parts faster. It just melts my heart seeing them grow to love the game as much as I do.
    In this super hostile videogame environment we're in, where being toxic is considered a strategy to win versus other players, FFXIV is such an unusual oasis of positivity, and I'll do everything in my hand to keep it as a safe haven for people, or as other call it, the "Gamer's retirement home".
