As a childcare worker: Anger is a normal human emotion that all children experience and it is generally very important that they learn to deal with it. And playing tends to be a good way for them to do just that. So I really don't see how faces of varying emotions could be harmful to kids. If this has an impact on their development at all, it would certainly not be a negative one.
The idea that everything that's not all smiles and cuteness would desturb a child and therefor needs to be kept away from them is a very outdated one. Never underestimate children. Even young ones are often capable of surprisingly intense emotional intelligence.
Also, I remember being annoyed by the smiles as a kid.

I also have to wonder, that if avoiding letting kids experience these emotions or things in their lives at all could be dangerous cause they aren't able to learn how to deal with these things in a controlled environment or before they have enough strength to cause major damage when lashing out.

besides lego trying to branch out afol and realistic features being a thing that adult collectors would like. Wouldn't more emotions in lego figures express creativity, I imagine it would allow for children to act out their favorite stories through their minifigs or perhaps create their own stories with their favorite characters. even as a kid, i appreciated different features. Though I collected stormtroopers, I gave them each their own face as I at the time felt they look more in place in battle scenes even when they are wearing a helmet

Honestly, I wholeheartedly disagree with the argument on minifigures having angry expressions. People have many emotions, and I think it’s better to encourage kids to show their emotions rather than hide them and only smile. Besides, kids are smarter than we think. If a kid sees, say, an angry Luke Skywalker face, I doubt they’ll think “this means I should only ever be angry.” Instead, they’ll likely remember the scene the set is replicating, and understand why Luke is angry.

the problem is they are both smarter and dumber than you think. they show bouts of incredible clarity but, also don't have enough experience to correctly associate with or connect the dots with things. as someone who works in a school IT department I have the unique perspective of dealing with a lot of different kids. sometimes they quickly understand things and other times it just doesn't click. it is what it is and you just have to learn to navigate it person by person.

The last controversy kinda makes sense, but I think the stronger justification is accuracy. They had to know that they'd eventually start adapting other franchises with famous actors of color, so not having them at all would be quite unfortunate. Especially for something like Black Panther. :P

    • @plebisMaximus
      @plebisMaximus Рік тому +10

But it's unfair to get mad at them when they, also because of accuracy, end up with a big race gap after introducing races. I think yellow minifigures can still have a part to play. While specific tones are the best for defined characters, yellow(usually combined with more generic faces) can be more ambiguous. A character who you can decide who they are. That’s why they’re great for the classic themes like city, castle, pirates, etc. In that same sense, darker skin tones can also fit into that role, simply not being a specific characters. Since there is already a big difference in the themes that use yellow vs tan skin tones, which are both “light”, there can still be a difference in themes that use dark skin tones for specific characters with realistic skin tones and generic characters.

I don’t remember what year the American civil war ended but we’re just going to say sometime after the 1860’s, up until around the 20th century. Now for other countries, I truly do not know because I’ve never actually left my home country of the US so I wouldn’t have a way of knowing if “yellow” was only used to describe Asian immigrants in the Us or not.

@@ExtremeWreck I just don’t see it as a stereotype if they’re the default minifigures. It’d be one thing if all the others had tan skin colors and only Asian themed minifigures were yellow, but that’s not the case. Just because yellow skin has been used as derogatory towards Asians doesn’t mean that every character represented with yellow is meant to be Asian. You’re connecting two completely different problems. That’s what I mean by the context is different.

They locked up any Disney Films referencing magic(leaving me with 101 Dalamations, Bambi, and the Rescuers pretty much). It didn't exist but it was still harmful. Looking back I think it had to do with people mistaking using magic for summoning demons I guess. I used to make up silly songs with nonsense words and they would either tell me I might say a cuss word in another language accidentally or invoke a demon. "Magic isn't real but magic is bad," sometimes it's amazing I still have my sanity 😅😅😅

Even going to McDonald's to get a Happy Meal, I would either ask my mom to ask the workers or, if we went inside, I would ask the workers myself if I could get the "boy toy". As for the diversity one, I get being upset about lando not getting a figure, and I don't mind the different skin colors for figures as it does ad some variety, but at the same time, it feels like lego has lost a chunk of its identity as a result. I have always associated the yellow skin with lego and it's not that common anymore. I think it only really shows up in their lego city series. As some have mentioned, I am glad that the original Lego minifigures still exist in the non IP sets, like Lego City, Creator, Pirates, and the standard collectable minifigure series.
I think if they tried bringing in race to those lines, it'd soon become a whole kerfuffle of phasing out the yellow minifigures, and making sure there's an equal balance between races.
Besides, there's plenty of diversity in the sets that adapt films and videogames to go round.
An interesting set I just thought about was the new Lego Ideas Table Football set, as despite it not being based on an IP, comes with a racially diverse mix of minifigures. It's nice to see, but I found to be unnecessary for the set, plus it only really felt like they included so many was to make up for the table build which was downscaled for playability and is pretty lousy.
(it's a £214.99 set. I think Lego are overreaching in what can be made a Lego set, a normal table football set would cost you way less)

Granted, I understand that some adults grew up not really knowing what it's like being a kid because they grew up in poverty and were forced to work for their entire life or they were raised in an abusive household or [insert not so ideal circumstance of childhood being used as basis of how parenting works], but its no excuse for refusing to learn if their ideas of parenting are challenged or proven to be ineffective/wrong.

I thought of another reason behind keeping the Lego skin yellow for so long
Cost. It's just cheaper to make all the heads one color, with different faces printed on afterwards. Making them multiple colors means multiple set up and change overs of the machines that manufacturer them. If the machine only cranks out yellow heads, you only need to fill it with yellow plastic. You start running a different color, you need to first make sure you have all the previous color out, or it will contaminate the next batch. That's time spent not making product, and potentially wasting the remnants of plastic from the last batch. Whereas if you kept running the same color, that remnant would just flow into the next, identical batch.
And at some point, you do get the, "but we've always done it this way" mentality.

Regarding counterfeit Lego, there's a booth at a flea market I visited last weekend that sold imitation minifigures and some counterfeit sets. There was not a Lepin logo in sight, nor any brand logo besides "Space Wars" or Star Wars knockoffs like the "Millineum Falcon" and "Dinosaur World" for Jurassic World knockoffs. The templar and hospitaller knight minifigures I bought from them are amazingly high quality with detailed printing. It makes me wonder what the knockoff sets are like. I'm tempted to get the Ideas blacksmith knock off next time.

4:10 Mixels was from THAT long ago? I remember loving that line a lot, both the show and the toys. Funnily enough, I’m also both an Aspie and have ADHD. I still have a box full of spare parts from the dozens of sets I got when it was around!
Ironically, Turg is one of the only ones out of that box that is left unseparated…

Honestly, even as a person who wishes to break modern gender conventions, I think completely removing the masculine and feminine aesthetics that toys have is a kind of bad idea.
Being excluded and picked on for liking a girl’s toy as a guy is genuinely awful, but removing what makes Lego Friends what it is ruins the fun for the guys and girls that choose it. My male friend actually collects Friends because it’s a unique style of set with colorful bricks and appealing barbie-like aesthetic. It’s a lot of fun to defy expectation and choose feminine toys as a guy and vice-versa.
My main take is that we should always have masculine, feminine, and gender neutral toys in our society. But what we should change is our perception that only the genders they’re targeted at can enjoy them. Don’t remove the rough and tumble nature of stuff like Technic and City or the soft and friendly vibe of Friends, just make sure we see it as “feminine and masculine” and not “this toy can only be played with by girls, and this one can only be played with by guys.” I have the same stance on the world of fashion. Fun for everyone, while still keeping the fun for those that choose a certain style and preference. Allow inherently masculine and feminine expression, but let anyone enjoy it if they want.

As someone on the autistic spectrum and also someone who has not heard of that term until now, I definitely agree with everything Strider said about the way that LEGO described Turg.
“Back of the bus window licker” definitely at least sounds like a term used for someone who could be seen as “weird” or “not right in the head”.
Even though I didn’t know of the term or its meaning, I’m happy that Lego did something about it and apologized.
People like me and Strider are not weird or not right in the head, but instead just different and I’m glad that LEGO decided to take a step in the right direction with this one.

I would refuse to stock Harry Potter sets for an entirely different reason. JKR is the public face of transphobia/trans hatred. Her quadrupling down on awful rhetoric has caused real and tangible harm to trans people, especially trans women.
It really sucks since I loved the books as a kid, have all the movies, and even some theater posters from the films.
I can't currently support the Harry Potter IP until she either changes her turn, or sells it to someone else.

Personally, I have no issue with supporting the IP nor JK rowling herself. No everyone is going to agree with men trying their darnest to force everyone to accept their delusional bullshit.

2:15 At least Pastaferians have noble goals, such as rejecting conformity (the whole reason the group was founded) opposing the spread of carbon emissions, halting global warming, and supporting equality among genders, races, and ethnic groups.
