My son wanted aspiration but the nurse didn't want to do that; so he asked why She said my son was lucky, because she was an instructor and could answer his question. Reason given was that aspiration would waste a vaccin dose in case it was found the injection was not done in muscle. This was in The Netherlands. I was shocked to learn that saving a little money had higher priority than avoiding damaging side effects.
That doesn't even make sense. That's just a professional way of saying,,

Good grief! This was Nursing 101 back when I trained as a nurse. I am retired from nursing and was shocked at the multitude of "changes/shortcuts" in bedside nursing that I witnessed during my husband's recent hospitalization.

The newer nurses will argue with you over this. Very much into “the literature says” or pointing a finger at faulty land marking if you happen to encounter bloody flashback. Regardless; it’s a technique that does alter mortality & morbidity. It would seem sensible.
@@user-wi4lm8lg8p z-track is a method just used to prevent leakage of the medication into the tissues when the needle is withdrawn. These are for meds that must be given deep IM; meds that would damage your subcutaneous tissues.
I’m a qualified nurse of 10 years. Just went to get my booster. They wouldn’t aspirate so wouldn’t politely walked out. The people giving it didn’t even know what I was talking about. Honestly made me feel such a fool and lunatic. Very upsetting experience.

Hi, Dr. John, because of your videos on this subject, I asked the pharmacist to aspirate before she did the booster. She knew what “aspirate” was-said it wasn’t necessary-but promised to do it. My request caused two other technicians to ask the pharmacist what aspirate was and so when it came time for my shot, the pharmacist asked whether it would be okay if the other two could look on so she could demonstrate! I wouldn't really put South Africa outside first world & into third world personally, I think of it as well above most countries I think of as the developing world, but honestly, the best results & science this pandemic have consistently come from less wealthy countries! Australia & NZ & Singapore (if put into that first world category) are the only ones bucking that trend in any significant way, otherwise the developed world has been a total disaster on covid & is the reason we still have it in the world! Countries like Vietnam have been phenomenal in their ability to manage it. So happy my nurse Laura aspirated my booster today I am in UK. She said one other person had asked for this and was happy to do it for me. We had a brief chat about the reason I was asking and she was very interested. She commented, "it makes sense". Thank you Dr John.

It's more than saving face. If this is why we've seen spikes in heart problems, and is the direct or indirect cause of 10s of thousands of (known) deaths in the west, and the people find out about it... maybe I'm being a little idealistic but I think there'd be civil war.

I'm a new ER nurse with about 6 years experience as an EMT prior to nursing. As EMTs, we couldn't give as many meds as nurses, but a big one we COULD give was epinephrine for allergic reactions. If you inject the concentration of epinephrine into the vein that you do into the muscle, you can kill the patient. For this reason, in my EMT training, I was ALWAYS taught to aspirate. Thankful I learned this as EMS personnel because I'm carrying it forward into my nursing career. Medications go through different routes for reasons, and safety of others is often unestablished. I'm pretty dang sure most patients would rather have a little extra pain than side effects like TTS, DIC, acute hepatic failure, and POTS. Just saying.

Injection route is mainly relevant for the time of resorption in the blood stream. Sympatomimetika given i.v. can kill someone if a certain dose is given too quicky, therefore it's reasonable to give it i.m. for safety, but no wrong if injected directly into the blood vessel and done carefully with no haste in accord with the right dose. If a medication is given s.c. or i.m. it will land in the blood system anyways, it's just a matter of absorption time.
I do not understand why all nurses and vax administrators do not know this otherwise why are there so many vax injuries.

Just got my second dose, asked to be aspirated for both myself and my partner and the nurse said that is fine. Tip, if you want aspiration show up to an NHS clinic (in this case Redruth medical clinic) not a pharmacy with adjoining room. Here in Massachusetts USA, the public nurses treat me like a conspiracy theorist when I mention aspiration. They remind me that I'm not a nurse so I don't know anything. I think their ego is standing before science. I think the real pandemic is the ego of public health officials.
My wife works in public health as an administrator, and I cannot discuss COVID with her. As far as she is concerned they are absolutely infallible. I talked with her about Aspiration. She laughed, and said exactly the same thing about it being a conspiracy theory.
She is a very smart woman, but when it comes to COVID, it seems they have been fired up into a crusade, and they wont hear anything to give them pause.

Nurse here, graduated 2012, was taught to aspirate before injecting, worked for an immunization clinic who also taught to aspirate, but never saw any of my colleagues do that. At least this nurse was paying attention in class.

it is not just been overlooked, the WHO said that IN THIS CASE it does not have to be aspirated....so this is on purpose, including the damage they do with it.

I was trained as a nurse in the late 1960s & have been appalled to learn nurses in the US are now trained that aspiration is unnecessary because “chances of injecting into a blood vessel is so rare.” I’m totally with you on this. Thanks for sharing.

I had my booster yesterday (UK) Asked to aspirate, I was told it was not something they do because "it doesn't make any difference" I insisted that she did it anyway, which she duly did, I watched to check it was being done correctly, I was lucky I had a mature nurse who knew what I was talking about and what she was doing. I asked the nurse who gave my last injection to aspirate. She was an older women and said she knew how to do it but that it wasn't taught in the US training programs for technicians anymore. When I asked the pharmacist to aspirate for the J and J vaccine, he said he wasn't trained to do it that way, so I played the odds.

As a nurse, I was taught to aspirate when I was in school in 2010. They did say at the time that it was controversial. Last time I checked, we don't aspirate with vaccines like the flu or the pneumonia ones, but I was told we should for other injections (like give pain Toradol or antibiotics). Maybe some people are confused because of this? Also, I don't see a lot of newer nurses aspirating any injections, so I'm not sure what their taught.

I’ve had arguments with newer nurses about the aspiration issue. Listening to victims of serious reactions, so many reported sudden sensation of something shooting immediately down their arm, sudden metallic taste in their mouth - all indicative of intravenous injection. It’s horrified me to know they still did not aspirate - when you could save lives.
This worries me because of another 'simple' procedure in hospital where I was told the metal taste would happen then subside. Unfortunately it didn't and was more like the matrix red pill scene and then I was immediately struggling to breathe. Not pleasant.
So new nurses aren't aspirating intramuscular shots? Is it just one or two of them or are you finding this a lot? Someone should go to the Director and they should be having immediate class for all medical staff that gives Covid shots!

All new nurses are taught that aspiration is not necessary. Inservicing would need to be implemented to teach this practice. At present, there are two schools of thoughts on the issue - but in light of the patient’s personal histories/experiences (ie. metallic taste in mouth & immediate sensation shooting down arm & through body) - we can logically conclude it has gone IV. Some of the high profile clients with adverse reactions (GB, myocarditis) have specifically mentioned this. That should be enough to immediately change the protocol to all vaccine injections require aspiration technique. An immediate call to action.
That is interesting. I received my flu shot in September. I had a metallic taste in my mouth for a couple hours after, which has never happened before. The next day I had weakness in right arm and leg. It didn't go away so had an MRI. Doctor thought I may have had small stroke, but MRI was fine. Still have weakness so she is sending me to rheumatologist. I told her weakness started day after shot. She told me shot wasn't cause, but it seems odd happened day after.
I am a retired RN. When I went in to get my vaccines I asked the nurse- I was getting it at a hospital- why they were not aspirating. The response was that so many people giving the vaccines are not health care professionals so they wanted to simplify the injection process so there could be more people giving the shots. I felt at the time there could be a problem.

I asked for aspiration and was pleasantly surpised when the nurse replied, "Of course, I always aspirate." Wish everyone was getting the same response.
Here in Ontario, they refuse. They say they can't do that because it's not in the procedure of how they were taught.
I'm in the UK and asked the attending Dr at the vaccination station could I be aspirated, he said it wasn't necessary but fine if the nurse would do that. The nurse wouldn't/couldn't do so, and the attending doctor did the injection. It's a big vaccination station 100s done every day, and he said I was the first one to ask.
That is because it is basic nurse training to aspirate when giving IM injections! Others who are giving these vaccines are not nurses and were not taught proper technique. Instead of teaching it they changed the protocol! A rare complication but most likely very preventable!!! Again easy common sense solutions seem to be ignored by a lot of governments.

Amen, amen, AMEN!!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! I'm a nurse, I was taught to ALWAYS aspirate prior to administering an intramuscular injection! Now that I'm back in school to further my career, even my nursing instructors can't adequately explain WHY aspiration during a deltoid injection is "no longer recommended" (by The W.H.O.)! It takes an extra few seconds, doesn't increase pain or risk, and DOES decrease risks. Removing aspiration from a deltoid injection technique just because veins and arteries are deep and few is a gamble. I personally refused to receive an intramuscular injection without aspiration prior to injection.
Hi Dr John, firstly thank you so much for your channel and the great advice and information that you give. I’m in Western Australia and went for my booster jab today at a government immunisation centre. I asked the nurse to aspirate, at first she said she didn’t understand what I meant, I went on to explain what it meant and she said oh that’s old practice and we don’t do it that way anymore! I stood my ground and told her that my second Jab (given by my dr) was aspirated at my request (didn’t know about it when I had my first AZ jab) and that I wanted the booster aspirated too. She agreed to do it that way after disappearing outside (I think to speak to someone). It’s amazing how one minute she didn’t understand me and the next she was able to do it with no problem at all. To be honest I think the fact that I seemed to know what I was talking about made her go and check with someone, I can thank you for that Dr John as I have listened to you explain it many times 😬 personally I think it’s all about saving vaccines and not wasting them, what do you think?

Yesterday I went for my Moderna booster. I asked the young lady administering it about aspirating and she didn't know what it was. She said she would ask the provider. Provider came in and I asked her. She basically said that's old school and not necessary now. I brought up the issues associated with the vaccine getting in your blood. She said there were not many cases of that, but she would do it if I wanted. I said yes and she did it while showing the other person what it was. I'm in the US.

All the evidence and research I can find in nearly the last decade points to NOT aspirating, as it does more damage than good when injecting vaccine in sites such as the deltoid where no major blood vessels are. Have you kept up to date on your education standards or are you continuing to use your old standards? I'm genuinely curious, trying to find good info - after all, we want to be evidence based right?
@LOL CATZ Does it have to be a MAJOR blood vessel to cause the problems mentioned here? Surely a blood vessel is a blood vessel. Although we Humans all have blood vessels in similar places, they are not in exactly the same places. This leaves room for problems. What is a valid reason for not aspirating: 'it's rare, it won't happen, it never happened to me etc etc Would you really want to be that 'rare' occurrence whose life changes forever then no one cares. This seems to be a common thought pattern.
Dr. Campbell, thank you so much for your informative videos. We went to get our Moderna booster at a local CVS pharmacy in Arizona. Based on what we learned from you about aspiration, I had called the pharmacy beforehand, and they had assured me that they "always aspirate." When we arrived, I mentioned aspiration to the nurse, and she said they are "trained to never aspirate." I told her that it was very important to me that she aspirate. She explained that aspiration can lead to "muscle damage" because there can be "air in there when you pull back" (huh?), and that the chances of hitting a blood vessel were miniscule. I said I would rather take the chance of muscle damage than take the chance of the vaccine going directly into the bloodstream. She said that it was against their protocol to aspirate, and that if there was any muscle damage, it could come back on her. I told her I would be willing to sign a waiver to prevent that. She relented, agreed to aspirate based on our verbal understanding that I would not complain if there was any muscle damage, and I watched her actually aspirate before completing the injection. My wife then went through the exact same discussion with the same nurse, and got her to aspirate as well. The nurse claimed that we were the very first to ask her to aspirate. Other than typical after-effects, we are fine, and as far as we can tell, our muscles are undamaged. Is potential muscle damage an actual potential consequence of aspiration? Even if it is, I think we made the right choice between the two risks.

The nurse that jabbed me explained every step in the process as he performed the injection and part of it was the “pull back”. I had no idea at the time he did it correctly, I was oblivious of the procedure to begin with. I had zero side effects from either injections and both were Pfizer. Thanks Doc!
My boyfriend was trained in half an hour how to aspirate when he injects our dog every 3 weeks for immunotherapy. Don't know why it's hard to teach this to people doing thousands of human shots.

To make matters more absurd, worked dairy. Saw the boss and the veterinarian inject cows hundreds of times. Aspirated every time.

This US Registered Nurse learned to aspirate while giving intramuscular injections in nursing school back in 1976. I returned to nursing back in 2002 and aspiration was not standard procedure. I just retired from nursing and can say that I have aspirated EVERY IM injection I have ever given. Period.

I am also a US trained RN in nursing school in1978. We were also taught to aspirate when giving IM injections. I did so for my entire 35 year career in nursing. Side note: there were only a very few times when I aspirated that I got blood back. At that point, you have to throw that syringe, uninjected, away.

I just want to note here some of the attitudes with vaccinating trainers. I asked my colleagues if they would aspirate for me and they asked the vaccinator trainer about it. She said it was something only anti vaxxers wanted to try and get out of having the vaccine. So thats what you are up against. Anyone who questions anything is obviously an antivaxxer.

I saw this often while teaching. I'd estimate 90% of people do not know what to do when something is not written down on a protocol for them. They just freeze up and have no idea how to fix anything that's not written down in stone and sent from the higher up's, as if protocols were the immaculate text of God.
I am an American trained RN and we were definitely instructed to ALWAYS ASPIRATE when doing an intramuscular injection for the exact reasons you have discussed here.
I am old school. I aspirate. I give myself B12 all the time and all the time I aspirate.. Recently I gave myself an injection, aspirated , saw no blood and Injected. When I withdrew the needle… blood came with it. . It was obviously that I went through a blood vessel but did not pick up any blood in the syringe during that plug. So Dr. Campbell, what happened? I am a nurse of your school and I’ve never had that happen to me before. There were no effects, it was only B12. But I have to admit I was a bit nervous after that.

By the way I did not mean that I was a nurse from his school, I meant I was an “old “ school nurse like him. Also it was a fair amount of blood that came with the needles. Like two teardrops.
With my first Pfizer jab I asked for aspiration but was told they don't do that anymore. Afterwards there was blood at the injection site...enough to cover the plaster they put over it. A couple of days later I got a huge bruise. She injected lower down the deltoid and I suspect it was a bad technique (A GP did the injection!) , as I had no problems after, except a lot of anxiety! My second was done at a different place and after talking with the nurse (she was a young nurse) about my first jab, she offered to aspirate. I was so relieved. She was lovely and talked me through it. She injected higher up in my deltoid and aspirated before administering the vaccine. No blood...no bruising....A completely different experience. She has had people asking for aspiration and is happy to oblige!
I asked the doctor undertaking my booster to aspirate and he said '"yes, no problem". I'm not squeamish so I watched and I'm sad to say he didn't do it, just pushed the plunger. Extremely disappointed by being lied to like this.

Same here. The pharmacist shooter was harried and overworked, simply said ok, and then just jabbed and pushed so she could get to next in line. Sigh.
@@MetalheadAndNerd definitely, one hand was on my arm, the other hand on the body of the injection. His thumb went straight from the main body to the top of the plunger. At no point was any part of his hand, fingers or thumb in a potion to be able to aspirate.

When I requested aspiration be carried out the nurse looked taken aback and asked why, when I explained she said she could not aspirate but would pull back the plunger a little to ensure no blood was found! I thanked her and she aspirated without realising the technical term. Perhaps just asking that the plunger be pulled back a little would stop the confusion that seems to be engendered by the correct terminology? Seems daft but if it helps... Aspiration story from Ohio USA.
Went to Walmart & asked to have my injection aspirated. Was there with an RN who knows this front to back having been trained properly.
It became clear that the tech didn't know what we were talking about. When we explained, she told us that she is putting this into a muscle, so there will be no blood vessels there (eyeroll). I'm a pretty cut-to-the-chase person, so I asked her, "will you aspirate this injection anyway? Do you know how?" She admitted she didn't, but asked if I wanted a pharmacist to do it.
I said, "Yes, absolutely & was somewhat hopefully we would get proper injections." When i saw the look on the pharmacist's face, I realized it would not happen. I can only assume she thought we were conspiracy nuts.
She came into the room & asked us if we would get the injections if they were not aspirated. I said, "Will you aspirate these injections for us? She said, "no" very sternly. I said, "Give us the shots". & as she was leaving, I said loudly "RIDICULOUS".
The RN I was with said afterward, "Do you think I should have gone into my training in aspirating IM injections?" I said, "it wouldn't have made any difference at all. These are automatons."
I was really angry afterward, but more embarrassed about the state of western medicine. In my opinion, the reasons they won't do this are:
1) Capitalism. It would cost $ to redo an IV injection regardless of how rare.
2) Bureacracy. Policy dictates rather than any critical thinking at all. They were trained improperly & will continue doing it wrong until the end of time. Shame on the CDC for allowing this. & they wonder why people don't trust the government here.
Along these lines, I'm reminded of a book I read in Sociology ages ago: The Peter Principle. It was a satirical take on the ineffficiency & incompetence of bureacracies. This book helped me understand life outside the academy more than anything else. One prominent finding: People rise to their levels of incompetence & stay there. Hence, the current mind-numbing situation against which you've been railing.
In the coming culture war between east & west, please note, at least the Chinese cared enough about its citizens to aspirate their injections.
I asked the nurse if they would aspirate the syringe prior to actually injecting. She said, "what do you mean". I said, "never mind" and left. I haven't had my first injection yet because I have not found a nurse who will agree to do it and many who don't know what it means.

My wife got boosted yesterday. She forgot to ask, but watched, and she was surprised because the girl aspirated anyways. She told her that's how she was trained. This was at a Publix pharmacy in the Tampa Bay area.

Well John. I work as an IT manger at my local NHS Trust. I had a conversation with the doctor at one of the vaccine clinics to see if he would aspirate. He refused saying that he was not going to change the protocol for just one person. Essentially, he did not want to listen to my concerns and hence I refused to have the booster and walked out without it. He did not appreciate the comment I made saying that without aspiration he would be administering the vaccination blind.
This video is misleading. There are no major blood vessels in the lateral deltoid that an IM injection would go into. Aspirating causes unnecessary trauma to the muscle, and breaks unnecessary capillaries. Which causes more blood.
Blood clots, which means aspirating increases the risk of hematomas, embolisms, infective endocarditis, etc. There's a reason why evidence based practice suggests to NOT aspirate, and has done so for years.

Could you please make a training video about aspiration, so there is a quick way for all of us to help in situations where people don´t know how to aspirate. And maybe give at the beginning of the video a quick sentence or two why it is so important to aspirate. That would help a lot of people tremendously I think. Has anyone done a comparison of these adverse effects between places where they routinely aspirate (you mentioned South Africa) and those that do not? Seems that this would yield valuable data.
South Africa have a very low vaccine rate regardless, so like the small trial numbers, it would probably go undetected anyway.

I myself suffered a whole month of absolutely alarming, terrifying and inexplicable neurological symptoms after my vaccination with J&J about 5 months ago. Thank God it seems to be over, but I must say, I got the scare of my life. I am now terrified of boosters and further vaccinations. And now in Germany (where I live) there is talk of mandatory vaccination. I so hope that these guidelines concerning aspiration reach the fossilized (and I'm afraid, corrupt) authorities here in time. Otherwise, I really don't know what to do! Thank you yet again!
J&J here 3 days ago, had a sore arm for the rest of the day. When I woke up at midnight shivering so hard my whole body hurt I was confused. Then the nausea set in, ended up vomiting a bit, felt slightly better but at 3am the cold sweats set in. Appetite was gone until late Sunday. Still dealing with nausea and a small fever but things seem to slowly be getting better.
Though, we will see what happens in the next couple of weeks, I requested the man who performed the injection to aspirate the vaccine, which he agreed to, but failed to perform. Literally just buried the needle and pushed the plunger. Made me pretty upset.
Their argument against this is asinine. What was it? Something like " We don't want to cause unnecessary pain or bruising". Well I think everyone is going to be okay with a sore arm and more bruising instead of, oh you know, possible blood clots and dying, or the heart problems, or whatever else might come out that doing it wrong causes.

Exactly. I self-inject every 2 weeks and was trained to ALWAYS aspirate. The process doesn't bruise or hurt! It's just about taking less than a second to check all is good beforehand!

I took my mum for her booster yesterday and asked them to aspirate. The "mental health nurse" giving the vaccine said absolutely not as it is unsafe to do so and they only aspirate when injecting into the buttocks. She was essentially unwilling to even discuss it in the most condescending way. I was incredibly annoyed but my mum was happy to go ahead with it so not much I could do. Unbelievable really how these "professionals" can be so badly informed. Don't think i'll be getting a booster! This was in the UK

Dr. John, I'd say that most of your viewers would be able to explain how to aspirate a needle in a single sentence. It might take a few more to explain WHY it should be standard practice with the Covid vaccines, but this isn't brain surgery. And you have done an excellent job of breaking down the facts in a way that the average person can understand what is likely going wrong with how these vaccines are being incorrectly administrated.
Unfortunately, there is an egotistical trap many highly educated people are prone to fall into. That being the belief that anyone who hasn't received their level of education isn't capable of understanding any of the amassed subjects at all. I believe this is probably why we are being ignored by the "educated idiots," we're peons, and they can't imagine we can contribute anything of value to the conversation. While we MIGHT have a solution to the scariest vaccine side effects, they haven't considered. Education bestows knowledge, wisdom comes from experience and the willingness to listen.

I'm South African and had a very strong reaction when I suggested the needle should be aspirated when speaking to a qualified nursing sister who gives the vaccination to others.
She said, "NO, IT IS NOT NECESSARY ! I attended an 8-session online course (each session being 3 hours long) on the vaccine and there was no mention of any need to aspirate the needle !"
Strong reaction. I felt I'd made a highly offensive and ridiculous suggestion.
So are we at a point where people with less than a week of training are giving injections?

I have friends who have been trained to vaccinate. I’ve passed on this information about aspirating the needle and they will not consider it. It makes me very cross!
When I had my booster I asked the vaccinator to aspirate and he agreed. He told me he was an ex dentist and he’d been trained to do it that way.
I took my (then) pregnant daughter along reluctantly for her shot and asked them to aspirate, but they refused and plunged it in quickly before I could object.
On balance I am glad she was vaccinated, because I think bring the vaccination reduced her risk factor whilst pregnant of catching covid but furious they wouldn’t take this precaution.
I can tell you from a nurses perspective and I’ve been a nurse for 37 years but the new nurses that are coming out of nursing school are not being taught to aspirate when giving IM injections. I saw this quite a while back when I was watching nurses give the Covid vaccine shots that they weren’t aspirating first so I brought it up at my hospital where I work and I am educating my new nurses they better be aspirating before giving IM injection medication. The protocols are wrong on this and I can tell you that. It’s a dumb protocol and that needs to change

I guess that "statistically" it doesn't hurt "that many people" and the time savings and the ability to get more mileage out of the nurses if financially advantageous to certain parties. I was taught to aspirate to make sure I was in the right place for the right procedure. But I'm curious. Haven't your spidey senses been quivering about everything wrong about this pandemic? Maybe I just had more exposure to the history of medicine, the politics of science, and systemic issues in modern medicine, etc. but this has been all wrong from the get-go.

My experience in Austria was very positive. I asked the nurse to aspirate. She understood what I meant and asked why. I said to ensure that the vaccine (Pfizer) didn't end up in the bloodstream. She said OK she understood and did it without hassle.
I even watched her do it. Very odd for me as I usually look away but very pleased she accommodated my request.

Im not accusing everyone of negligence but there is a lack of rigor and humanity in the healthcare sector that is concerning.
I wish I lived in Austria! The city where I live is filled with self absorbed, arrogant a-holes that would get very offended if I, or anyone, were to ask the person to aspirate before injecting. To further complicate things, the vast majority of the places where the vaccines are given are at pharmacies and usually it's the "technicians" that perform the vaccine injections.

My Wife and I in South Australia have just tried to get our first dose of Novavax at one of the large vaccination centres near us in the Adelaide northern suburbs. When I asked if they could aspirate my injection the nurse said she would have to see her supervising nurse first, a second administering nurse came in and asked if there was a problem and when I said I wanted injection aspiration she said 'Yeah I can do that', I was relieved for about 5 seconds until the slightly younger supervising nurse came in and refused to allow the aspiration! said it was old school and not in the current guidelines so they would not do it and no one would!
I'm now desperately trying to find somewhere that has the Novavax Vaccine and that will give me the injection with aspiration, the way I believe is safer. I welcome any locals that have any information on where I can get this done right.

Thank-you Dr. Campbell!!! About aspiration: I got my booster yesterday, Moderna (1/2 dose) after 2 Pfizers earlier here in Canada. I'm a GP and I've had a Hx of cardiac arrhythmia from the drug sulfasalazine years ago and thought it'd be nice to ask for aspiration. I was lucky that the healthcare provider was also a family doctor maybe about age 50 who works more in in education dealing with complex patients with addiction and mental health. When I asked about aspiration, he acknowledged he was trained to do so at first and that we don't do it any more. But, he was perfectly happy to aspirate and did so with no trouble. He mentioned from the supply trouble that the current batch of needles are not very good, rather dull in fact that requires more force and causes more discomfort (aka patient complaints). But, I mentioned duller needles might not cut into the muscle as much and trigger bleeding that might cause the vaccine to enter into the blood more readily. This reminds me of the different types of suturing (stitching) needles used in surgery, 'cutting" and "non-cutting". "Cutting" needle sutures have a triangular-shape with sharp edges behind the point are used for the the skin to essentially cut though more easily. But, if "cutting" needles were used internally, then they'd slice up the typically delicate internal tissues that can cause sutures to tear though and fail holding tissue together. In contrast, "non-cutting" suture needle come without sharp edges, round from the point back, much like a common pin used in sewing, no cutting = less damage. injection needles typically are thin tubes sliced obliquely at the tip. They do cut through the skin and slice into the muscle leaving little damage. But, maybe the ideal injection needle would come to sharp point and have a 'side port' for the liquid to flow through into the tissue. The end result is less trauma and bleeding and less chance for the injection entering the circulation quickly. Hmmm... this type of needle exists at least for dentists doing root canals: pac-dent.com/products/optiprobe-needle-tips. Summing up, I'm happy to have had my vaccine given with aspiration (and no metallic taste). Congrats if you got to the end of my thoughts!
When I was in school, we were taught to ALWAYS aspirate. When I taught nursing students, I taught that they should ALWAYS aspirate - just in case they hit a vein. I actually have hit a vein & had to stop, redraw the med, etc. If I had not, it's possible that I could have been sued, or worse seriously maimed or killed someone.
Had booster at GP clinic in Reading. Asked if they could aspirate. Told 'Yes, we can all do that''. So 🥳 I felt very lucky . 😃
One problem is we assume that this Vax is like every other vax that we have seen, and it is not. This is the Greatest Experiment that has ever been performed in the history of medicine, and it is being performed on Human Beings, and it's just an incredible thought. My first shot the doctor refused to aspirate because it's no longer taught or required thanks to WHO that changed the protocols since needles are finer than they were 40 years ago. I was disgusted as an old trained nurse.
My second shot the next young doctor shrugged and said "if that's what you want it doesn't bother me" and proceeded to do it. Well done young man.

They were both doctors from the medical practice I attend. I would never ask for an appointment with the first woman but the young man on the second shot I would happily see again.
Prior to this I'd rung around different government clinics and pharmacies, mentioned aspirating, they all said "no they don't do it or aren't trained to do it". My frustration was palpable over the line since I'd usually ended up saying that "a 1 second withdraw of the plunger couldn't possibly be that difficult".
Hence my first shot ended up not aspirated.
This finding on aspiration is not new to any old school nurse or doctor but for those who've suffered the vaccine injury in the last year, what a terrible waste and shame. For one second extra care it would have been a different story.

On the same day you published this video Health Canada published their official guide for clinicians. And I quote "Aspiration prior to injection of ********* is not recommended, as there are no large blood vessels at the recommended immunization sites and not aspirating before injection has been demonstrated to reduce pain." It seems they are more interested in reducing possible pain from the procedure than potential serious long-term debilitating side effects.

I am in the US (Tennessee.) I hesitated getting my booster dose because I feared they wouldn’t aspirate. I ended up booking my appointment at a walk in clinic staffed by nurse practitioners instead of a pharmacy in hopes they would know how to do it. When I asked her if she ever aspirated she said, “Always, it’s how I was trained. I don’t want to hit the blood vessel near the deltoid muscle.” I almost teared up, I was so relieved! So if you are in the US try going that route instead of having a pharmacist do the injection.

if the needle perforates blood vessels on the way in, without those being at the injection site, wouldn't the substance still saturate the damaged area and enter the bloodstream to some extent, regardless of aspiration?

My polite request to have this done was refused this afternoon and I therefore declined the jab. The nurse knew what I meant but said she couldn’t stray from her instructions. Just tweeted in response to Matt Hancock’s call for everyone to get this done asking why the UK won’t take this simple precaution. Wasting the odd dose seems a poor excuse.

When I asked the pharmacist to aspirate he refused saying it would affect the integrity of the vaccine and that the vaccine would go into the bloodstream anyways. I told him that if that happens the vaccine shouldn't be administered, that's the point of aspirating to ensure it stays in the shoulder muscle. He refused, I cancelled my appointment and will try find someone who is willing to aspirate in the UK. It's so frustrating that they are blindly following instructions that don't make sense and endangers their patients.
My biggest worry is that he was right, not that he was wrong.

One week after 2nd AZ dose I was admitted to A&E resuscitation unit with suspected blood clot(s) affecting breathing and heart (constant rapid beats). Treated for blood clots. Needless to say I won't be lining up for any booster. Side effects may be rare but scary if it happens to you.
They not rare. They are underreported and hidden for the public.
I'm guessing they didn't aspirate the needle, shame on them. Hope you're okay now mate.

I went for my booster today, I asked the nurse to aspirate and she went and got a head nurse. She refused to do it and let anyone else do it either. So I phoned a helpline number and asked to book another appointment as long as it was aspirated and once again I was refused my request. Scotland.
Thank for this Dr John...I've held back having injections over this and many other things that seem so wrong about C-19.

When I took my son (adult aged 28, severely disabled) and me for our boosters 3rd November I asked our GP to aspirate. I felt a bit shy and awkward but was determined to ask. He asked what I meant by aspiration so I explained. I wasn't sure whether he really didn't know or if he was checking if I knew what I was talking about! Anyway he agreed though he said it was very safe and 'too thin a needle to hit a blood vessel'. I said it was rare but possible. He did know what to do and I thanked him for doing so for us. Thank you John as without you I would not have known what it is and why to ask and to insist!
The GP was wrong - a thinner needle could get into a smaller blood vessel where a wider needle would not

When GPS are failed doctors and spend their days wine drunk chucking out pills willy nilly. I'm not against medicine at all but there's a huge problem with drugs being inappropriately prescribed and I've had many friends worse off as a result of their treatment. Benzos and SSRIs in particular it's a fucking joke

My wife had renal failure and had to have EPO injections several times a week. The nurses that taught me how to do it stressed from the start that i should always draw the plunger back slightly to ensure there is no blood before injecting, so I would have thought this would be the normal practice.
No actually for the last several years, 10 or more we are trained not to aspirate for IMs. Informed consent is required by law and not being honored.

But i didn't know you should start over with a new needle or dose, if you do get blood. It's only happened twice, but i just pulled it out, and re-jabbed. Never had an issue, but is it safer to start over with a clean injection?

@Dr. John Actually it's quite necessary to aspirate ALL injections, right John? Intravenous injections NEED it to make SURE you are actually IN the vein because that's where it needs to be, in the blood. However, Intramuscular injections like vaccines, NEED to be IN the muscle and NOT the vein, so you absolutely NEED to check for the presence of blood in all injections, just for opposite necessities. Keep up the Great work you are doing, you've been correct all along! The world needs to hear more and we need more people like yourself. You hit on the biggest problem, common sense is rare when everyone is approved to give injections. At our local WalMart here in the USA, they trained cashiers to give the jab when they were approved. I'm surprised that we haven't had a lot more adverse reactions due to the cavalier attitude towards the administration of them.

I was trained as nurse in 1971 and we were taught ALWAYS aspirate on an intramuscular injection! I would NEVER do anything to my patients that did harm!

My daughter joined the NHS in October and is training. She sent a video last week of her doing a practice injection and the instructor can clearly be heard saying "don't forget to aspirate"
I've just been for my booster at a vaccination center at a local pharmacy. I asked the pharmacist to aspirate, and he told me it was strictly forbidden under NHS regulations. Furthermore he told me that if I had been told that then I should go and ask them to give me my booster. I could not believe the response I received.
They told my wife the needle can separate from the syringe and the vaccine won't be effective. I conversely stood my ground and they reluctantly aspirated. My doc said I'm listening to the wrong sources. Had my second last week and doc did it so the nurse wouldn't have a freak out over aspiration. Let's see what happens post this research. I'm not expecting any change or humble pie. But I'm truly grateful to you John for the straight talk.
I used to be a nurse and we were taught to aspirate with every injection. It's not difficult at all. Apparently if the needle could separate they are crappy nurses.
@@trekketoo that was my thought. It's the young nurse that did my wife's vax. They got the nurse closer to my age to do mine the first time when I said no aspiration no vax. The shot would have been wasted if they hadn't agreed, so I had leverage. Second time only the young nurse was working. I was all set to argue the second time that it's not a clinical reason, but seems more of a question of skill. My doc just cut out the need for argument. He then did it so smoothly it was obviously from muscle memory. Even if aspiration makes zero difference, until it's conclusively known, it just seems irresponsible to my lay thinking to not aspirate. 🤷
Why is it that medical staff are so reluctant to admit they might not know everything and to have an open discussion? They would be much the better for it.
Here’s what Nursing Times says for IM injections …
“The procedure for IM injection has been discussed widely in the literature but there are concerns that nurses are still performing outdated and ritualistic practice relating to site selection, aspirating back on the syringe (Greenway, 2014) and skin cleansing.”
“Aspiration to check whether the needle is in a blood vessel is not usually necessary (PHE, 2013). Aspiration is only required when the DG site is used, which is not recommended (Greenway, 2014; Malkin, 2008).”
In other words, your doctor inflicted extra unnecessary pain on you, using a type of syringe known to be less safe instead of using the modern non-aspirate-able and disposable AD syringes used nearly everywhere since 2003.

When I went for my second dose, I asked at reception for aspiration, and was told it's fine, and the practitioner who administered the injection was very happy to do so. In fact, she said it was necessary to do it like that.
My sons are farmers and they fully understood the importance of getting this right when injecting livestock.
I asked the RN for aspiration when I got my booster shot the other day, thanks to Dr. Campbell. She was willing but had to get permission from her superior, who informed me and if something happened to me they would not be accountable. She also told me it wasn’t “best practice” in not the kindest way. I said fine I still want that and I did have the RN draw back the needle. Thank you without your podcast I wouldn’t know to ask. The RN was more than willing to aspirate.
I'm from Germany and I got my third shot on Wednesday, and I asked the nurse about the aspiration, and she was quite surprised I asked - according to her it is absolutely reckless to NOT do it. She didn't believe me when I told her that it has stopped being common practice in the UK and the US.
I was very relieved because I was nervous about bringing it up.
Afterwards I researched that the STIKO (the German vaccination commission) has also stopped recommending aspiration in 2016. So, fortunately it seems like the doctors and medical staff I met haven't heard of that or decided not to follow it.
Then it's important to know which. Because if they haven't heard, then when they eventually do hear, they might stop aspirating.
But if they've decided not to follow the recommendation, they won't stop the practice.

I am wondering how quick can a nurse do the aspiration. Here is a video from germany showing a child getting vaccinated. I Got my vcacination at a Covid specivic vacination site in germany and am under the Impresion Aperation occured, my 3rd dose will be at a elderly GP so I won´t know wether that was Military protocolls impact for two weeks.

just because it's comforting, doesn't mean it's true. just because IV is worse, doesn't mean IM isn't also bad. he is working very hard to make people comfortable with taking this vaccine. SUS AF IMO
