Excellent choices for newcomers to Hanoi John. I agree that Hanoi is unique amongst large SE Asian cities. Manila, Bangkok, KL, even HCMC try too hard to look and feel like a Western city. Hanoi still keeps its old architecture, its small streets, tree lined streets and boulevard, lakes, etc. As for feel, I like seeing Hanoi with so many local families and children walking amongst the foreign tourists whereas other larger cities have their locals live well outside the border of those cities downtown.
Glad to see you putting out content again from Vietnam, love it. I used your experiences to plan my trip last year in the south to mid Vietnam . Next year it will be from the mid to north Vietnam. Please keep it coming. Michael G Hamilton Canada
Thank you Mr. John Saboe! Love your video. I'm a Vietnamese guy and also your fan from Texas but have not been in Hanoi. And don't worry about the language, you'll speak better soon. :)
Great stuff, John. Thanks. We went to DaNang and HoiAn last year, and are planning to go to Vietnam again in January 2025. Your videos are really useful for planning the trip.
love your stuff John. i will be in SE Asia for the next 3 months. my first time there. 68 years old from Lansing Michigan. Cebu City Philippines will be my home base. a trip to Hanoi is now on my agenda. keep up the good work
Thank you, John, for another great view of Hà Nội, my favorite city in the world. Will be back soon in the maze, looking forward to having a Phở chay! 🥰
Thanks John, very helpful. Staying in Old Quarter for a week at the beginning of May. Hotel 5 mins walk from Beer St, couple more to the lake. Can't wait, looks fantastic.
A nice chilled video with a good tone! I've watch quite a few on Hanoi as myself and wife are flying into hanoi in March. Will watch you other vietnam video now 😊
Great to see you back, John!! Great video to kick off 2024. I love the new format of your video too! I’ve never been to Hanoi so this will come in very handy in the near future. Cheers and hope to see more of this 😎
Thanks John, I just relived my trips to Hanoi while watching your video. I usually stay at the Apricot Hotel and when I walk out the front I'm right behind you on the walk round the lake. The coffee, the food the sights and especially the people keep bringing me back to Hanoi and Vietnam. looking forward to more from you.
Just met you at the hideout!!! Really enjoy your videos!!have for a while now…. And it was awesome to meet you and chat for a few minutes… I just had a little snack at a place called Jeremy’s if you don’t know about it I think you should… close to the hideout… be well!’
Loved to video John, it's been a while since I have watched one, looks like things are going well. Need to catch up on your videos, they are inspiring me to visit.
Great.to hear from you as always. I find Hanoi weather is much cooler than HCMC. I'm currently in Bangkok and I'll be back to Nha Trang in March. Enjoy it and stay cool!
G’day John, Thanks for another great video. We can’t wait get back to Vietnam, and especially up to Hanoi this time. Like you, we love to just wander around, eat and drink and just soak up the feel of a place. There is a little cafe we love the look of that you may want to check out…. Ca Bop 23 Hang Vai, Hoan Kiem. Let us know if you make it there. Could you share the details of the vego pho place? Take care until next time, Cheers Louis Kats & Kellie, Your number 1 Fan in Melbourne, Australia 👍 🇦🇺 🇻🇳 By the way Kellie & I are sitting on our outdoor sofa on our porch on a sunny Sunday morning enjoying our coffee’s & watching your video & wishing we were over there with you. How much was that delicious looking pineapple cake ?
Louis and Kellie! You have made my day with your wonderful message, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! I will definitely check out that cafe on my next trip to Hanoi. I hope you can return to Vietnam very soon!!! Here is the Google Maps location of the pho Chay stall near the train station-maps.app.goo.gl/Da633byxhyK1btkQ7?g_st=ic . Take care yourselves and see you in future!!!
Chao anh John! Another great video. I've been to Viet Nam many times--including a brief teaching stint 24 years ago--and I can attest to the difficulty in picking up local language skills. I am very happy to take the time to share my English speaking but I must totally butcher the language as my attempts are inevitably met with confused silence or more than likely, laughter. Coming back again in February and will press on in my awkward attempts. Thanks for the tour of Hanoi and your observations...Safe travels!
Happy New Year John! Thank you so much for all the Vietnam content. We used your videos to plan out our visit last October. Always looking forward to seeing new content from you. Safe travels friend.
Hey John. Have you walked the alleys in Ba Dinh? I lived out that way for two years. There's lakes and coffee shops to experience as well as the usual bikes laden with fruit, veges ect; plus the locals are pretty chill out there. Try around Ngoc Ha and wander from there.
I love watching your UA-cam videos about Vietnam. You are a remarkable storyteller, and your videos shows the beauty of the city. Can you do a video on getting a permanent visa to Vietnam? I am a Vietnamese American who emigrated to the States when I was a child. It's my dream to one day open up a school for orphans. Is it difficult to get permanent citizenship? Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I can include this topic in a video in the future. I think you should contact an immigration lawyer to help you with the paperwork for passport/citizenship. This is something that is very possible for you however it may take a little time to process. It sounds like a wonderful dream that’s not far from your reach. Take care and many blessings and prosperity to you!
@@iamjohnsaboe Thank you for getting back to me! I am going to look into getting an immigration lawyer, just as you suggested. Have a wonderful LNY (Tet) celebration!
Thanks John, I enjoy watching your vlogs they are totally entertaining. I myself stopped learning to speak Vietnamese because of my in-laws having a good laugh at me while trying to communicate. Keep these coming as I love seeing my 2nd home in a different way you show it
Haha, thanks so much!!! I’m glad you can relate to the experience of trying to speak Vietnamese in front of Vietnamese!😂 Thanks again-many more stories to come!!!

Thanks very much Max! Personally I’ve never gotten sick from street food in Vietnam, but I don’t eat meat. I’ve rarely heard of people getting sick from street food but do look for cleanliness and a busy stall.
Visited last month. Had a great time and ate alot of good food.

Hey John....how do you stay long term in Vietnam?....I am wanting to do the same....how does the visa thing work for you?
I teach media and communication at a university. I have a work permit.
When did you shoot this? I thought it was kind of cold in Hanoi this time of year but everyone is still wearing shorts and t-shirts.
November 2023.
Hey John, while in Hanoi, did you run into Hanoi Hanna? LOL

I’ve spent very little time in The Philippines to know.
Can you eats normal and drinks stuff with ice and not getting sick?
Never had a problem with this. Watch the cleanliness of where you are eating. Water is either boiled or filtered that’s used for drinks and ice.
