Fleshgod Apocalypse - Kingborn Drum Cover by David Diepold

- Hello everyone!
This is a cover version of 'Kingborn' by Fleshgod Apocalypse.
Francesco Paoli is one of my absolutely favourite metal drummers, due to his super tight and powerful blasts. He is also one of very few, who can really nail a track at 270 bpm in a live situation.
So it was very challenging! Especially because of some fill ins and the double bass pattern during the verse. I originally wanted to use heel-toe-technique on this one (like Francesco does), but I didn't get it as clean as I wanted it to be. So after some takes I switched back to what I'm used to -- which is heel up/swivel.
I'm still working on it, or rather my balance during playing heel-toe. Maybe for the next video...
Very special thanks to my buddies Bartol and Reins from bazn sounds & records!!!
I also want to thank Mark from Pedaltrigger and Fabian, Hendrick, Dieter (and everyone who's involved) from Murat Diril Cymbals for always supporting me the best possible way - THANK YOU!
If you want to get in contact:

Except for the bass drum and (half) of the snare drum, all the drum sounds are natural (just used pre-set eqs and compressors). For the bass I used a standard sample from the Steven Slate foundry and for the snare I mixed signals (about one half natural sound with eq, comp and just a little verb; and the other half is again a standard snare from the Steven Slate foundry. I had to pitch the sound of the sample, so it would match my real snare.
It just gives you the attack during all the blast beats. And yes I admit, it sounds a bit unnatural but it's just a drum cover and you can sea that I'm actually playing it live...)
Furthermore I used
Dixon MBS shells (2x22", 8", 10", 12", 13", 16", 18")
A p.d.p. Limited Edition 20ply Snare with Die Cast Hoops (14"x8")
Pearl Demon Drive
A Roland SPD-S for triggering (bass drums)
And Murat Diril Cymbals:
20" t(h)rash crash
18" blast china
14" blast china
14" luminous hi hat
10" trash hats (10" blast china, 9" luminous splash)
8" & 9" renaissance splash
17" rock crash
16 speckled crash
18" rock crash
10" stack
18" rock china
19" rock china
22" rock mega bell ride
11" black sea hi hat
12" black sea trash hats
21" custom crash/ride

What the actual fuck. I'm gonna quit drumming now :( that was insane
+66Samus Just listed my kit on Craigslist... can't look at it any more.
Samus! I love how humble you are man. Favorite channel on UA-cam.
+66Samus Dude your Turtles in time medley owns everything else
And he's wearing fucking boots...just for good measure I suppose (in case it weren't crazy enough)
+66Samus Don't even think about giving up. You or anyone else. If you practice your technique and push yourself, you can in time become capable of this as well. Keep shredding!!!
anybody who can drum Fleshgod Apocalypse while boots have my respect. ✌
that's what I'm sayin... crazy
😲😲😲😲😲😲
TIMBS
Bet he can do it with flip flops
i can play agony without fucking up (true FA fans get this joke)
Amazing playing!
shit my pants right away
thank you Peter!!!
Ha ha ha! ;) You truly play very well and I've seen your other videos too.
Insane! :-D
David Diepold
Indeed, you can feel honored even being mentioned by mighty Peter Wildoer! ;)) Hahaha
+David Diepold This is epic dudes!
Blast beats out for Harambe
+Richard Hanley HAHA
He took a blast for us...too soon...
the hell is Harambe?
Злобный Телепузик the gorilla who was shot at the Cincinnati zoo like a year ago. Hes wearing a gorilla shirt so yea.

And in boots!
I've been playing for over 13 years but I just can't get *THAT* foot technique. Ugh.
I hope this guy is aware that he's playing the song better than Francesco himself... This is almost flawless and Francesco always says that he always breaks the song down in really small pieces in the studio and does loads of retries, while this guy who has maybe done some retries but still manages to pull off the whole song... I'm stunned.
absolutely agree..
Maybe he's playing this song better than Francesco but not the other songs of Fleshgod Apocalypse.
Tirreger
how the hell would you know he hasnt posted him playing any other fleshgod songs? stupid ass
Tirreger Based on what? He hasn't even uploaded any other Fleshgod covers...
Dean Greens I meant that David isn't playing the songs with the power Francesco is playing them.
His blasts are weaker than Francescos but amazing anyway.
Btw. please excuse my bad English. :(
The secret is the moustache.
I knew it
It all makes sense now, all these years, now I finally understand.... the powers..... of the moustache.......
I was thinking it was the Gorilla shirt..
Obviously! :)
Valid statement
ive never heard a kit sound so beautiful
im only commenting because our names are similar
What a cute Pikachu you have
Read the description
Every time it flashes to his face, it's like he's not even trying that hard. Such outstanding endurance and finesse. Bravo!
I dont know about you, but i feel relieved when i see drummers being able to play francesco's double bass patterns with single strokes
Who are the 53 idiots who had no freaking clue what they were watching??? No one should dislike this masterful playing!!!!!
technically, top
musically, garbage (not necessarily talking about drums ... but the "song" as a whole).
@@jamc666 Maybe, true, this is considered the worst fleshgod apocalypse álbum... But not too bad in My opinión
Now 331 idiots
@@jamc666 inside your concept of musicality, maybe.

A drum song even David Diepold facially struggles with. Can't imagine being able to play this. Not in a thousand lifes.
I swear to god, I have been sitting for nearly an hour looking for this video now, remembering seeing it many years ago, just to show it to a friend. Finally i fucking found it, and it was worth the search! This is by far, in my opinion, on of the (if not THE) best drum cover on youtube. I bow myself in the dust and take my hat of for you dude, holy shit.
agreed. i've been watching this video since like 2015. i watch it like once a month tbh. i just love it. david diepold's an insane drummer and francesco paoli is even crazier for writing this shit
Lost count how many times I've watched this......still best drum cover on youtube imo
Holy shit... 7 years after saw it for fist time and still is a mindblowing cover... wtf... one of the best perfrormances i´ve ever seen in this kind of videos!
Over the years I must have watched this video over 500 times
Love your playing David!! :)
1 footed blast mate!!! Insane stuff! Good job!
Chris Niven I thought I was seeing things.
Wie kann man sich sowas bloß freiwillig als Drummer antun? Der Mann ist der Wahnsinn!!!!!!
1:33 One foot O_O!
dats normal for him..check kollias :D
and i think that he is using the technique
of kollias
kollias swivels his feet at each stroke..he doesnt..
I think he's using heel toe or sth. When it comes to death metal, a lot of practice is vital
It's not heel toe, just pure ankle :)
Damn!!!!!! This video doesn't just deserve a thumbs up, it deserves the good old five stars man!
As a Drummer since 1996 How does a guy sit down and play this... I can Drum like 45 seconds of the Violation and we know how long that intro is. Rock On David, and I hope alot of people saw you with Obscura when you were touring just recently 🤘😎🤘
Total respect for the foot speed. Unbelievable.
Wow. Insane. This isn't my style of music but the speed and accuracy is insane.
not bad...but can you play Seven Nation Army?
hahahaha.....no he can't, his tempo knob is jammed at maximum, so he's forever in vibra mode XD
Seven pornogrind army? That gotta sound interesting.
Haha, before to see your comment, I was asking myself the same question for Seven Nation Army^^
dark shine Hahaha
😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
I was dying to find another great extreme metal drummer on UA-cam as Alex Rudinger and Anthony Barrone. SUBSCRIBED.
Travis Orbin too, Alex was his student.
+Vanish EditZ He gave him one lesson, came from Rudi's and Travis's own mouths lol.
hannes grossmann
Precision is insanely insane
Einer der besten Drummer für mich persönlich welche es gibt. Absolut der Hammer!🔨
Austria is the new breeding-machine of sick drummers. I am so proud of us.😊
this is one of the best drum covers i have ever seen! those single foot blasts are amazing... incredible technique man.
Francesco Paoli:singer, songwriter, guitarist and become drummer for a replace. The guy is the Metal. What a great artist, can't compare no one to him.
Not only the playing is pristine but also the mixing and video quality.
and thus 10000 calories were burned.
Not in the case of him that has an incredible combination of control and relaxation.
not really he was barely moving
@@anibalangueira9424 truth. This took like zero physical effort for this dude.
That't true! He is sweating from second 1!!
Yeah, I think only his left foot burned 10‘000 calories.
some guys take their shoes off while playing but you have boots. Well played.
that are david's habit, dude!
we can't change our habit that we did from the beginning..
boot drummer gang
All it takes is endless hours of commitment and dedication. One hell of a job!
i honestly think david is the best drummer ive ever seen, being a drummer myself hes put thousands of hours behind the kit and im sure he has beats and fills constantly going through his mind it takes over your life , well done mate
It's a few hours before filming this, when he actually got out to the studio, that this guy discovered there was a world outside his drumming room. True story.
What a drummer ! I don't think theses many other people in the world who can execute this drum cover as well as this guy. 😎
That ride sounds amazing.
This deserves 1.3 million
In the 1st second
Fantastic drumkit and playing!
your technique is so clean & incredible holy shit
This is the result of many years of playing / experience, this is all the hard work, the flower, that is in full bloom. Great work !!
The singles via swivel technique at 3:30 is absolutely insane!! I keep rewinding back and watching it over and over again. The sheer power, speed and tightness is unreal to behold. DD is a superior drummer! \m/
I know I'm 5 years late to the party, but holy fucking fuck... this performance is fluid as hell. Covering Francesco is no easy feat, even by DM standards, yet you played it like it was nothing. Well done!
Increíble cover!! Excelente músico lml!!
時折見せてくれる笑顔が最高です!!!
Simply amazing, man. Thank you.
After avenging his father, Inigo Montoya drank the elixir of youth and went on to become a drummer.
I think one of their craziest songs is "Thru Our Scars" I would love to see and hear some of your drumming prowess on that insane song.
+StringedBeast
nah, just the speed... the drumming is particularly simple
Nothing i said is untrue. One of craziest, insane song. Ok.
+StringedBeast
Then you haven't heard a whole lot then. The only thing impressive about this is the speed and stamina of the song. The drumming itself is relatively simple with lots of double bass, blast beats and simple fills. It's not very complex
FutileExistence - With all due respect, I started playing drums in 1979 (yeah, I'm that old) and the only thing impressive about any percussion part is the fastest speed at which you can play it cleanly. There hasn't been a drum part written that is impressive at 2 bpm so, while I agree at half speed this might not be that complicated, at this speed it's pretty fucking awesome. Just my two cents.
+FutileExistence
I'd love to see a video of yours on youtube with all the simple fills, double bass and blast beats you're talking
about
idk how many times ive seen this cover or how manytimes i looked at the comments, but ive never seen anyone comment on how he throws in those splashs in between all these fills, such a bad ass drummer.
Absolutely amazing 👍
This is how a REAL MAN drums blast: With one foot and passion. Truly amazing. I appreciate what you do. You are an artist. Damn, it took me about 15 minutes to find words. Keep going, lad.
i hate people who have perfect technique like this. they make it look too easy.
practice dude, practice
Unfortunately not everyone have "situtation" to play drums. Time, money, house etc. I wanted to play drums for ever but i am just able to start. I have been playing for almost 1 year. Now I am 21 years old and imagine how many years I need to be at this guys level. People who started in their childhood are so lucky.
Bora Kaplan
Dude. The drummer for this band has only been playing drums for about 5-6 years and look at what he's writing now! Optimism man!! You'll get there if you put the effort in trust me :)
As I said at the previous post. He obviously had time and opportunity to play drums. He could play many hours in a day and he did. My point is: not everybody have the opportunity to play that much.
Bora Kaplan You make time. I do know what you mean though, but I'm in school for engineering you want to talk about time constraints. My guitars and drums have just been a "nice touch to the room" that collect dust. I have played my guitars and drums very rarely, so they just collect dust, but I make time when I can. So if you are going to school for engineering and working then it's understandable, but else wise make time; you sleep when your dead.
Hands down - one of the best drum covers ever made. Just great!
The speed and accuracy is just something!!!Utmost respect bro, that is some of the best covers I have seen!!
You should do some video tutorials! Perfect playing man :)
Holy shit that's fast
five and a half years later and I still come back (often) to watch this. Stunning.
Absolutely amazing Dave from my heart
The US army called. They want back the Uzi you used to make the bass drum sounds for this cover.
Lol
in few days I will be able to play it
Oh superb!! I love drum metal covers 🤤🔥
Absolutely superb.
In 2019 still insane!
with the boots on?! haha very impressive
I think the boots are an extra challenge he intencionally choose.
I love how the enthusiasm and satisfaction just radiates from his face while playing this masterpiece! :)
No one's gonna talk about how this man absolutely brutalized that kit whilst wearing Timbs?! Unreal...
Totally jealous of your set up
4:36 It laughs because there was no bassdrum for a long time :-D
Nailed it! Amazing skills!
Right up there with the best drummers in extreme metal. What am i on about the WORLD

Dude this is absolutely amazing.. much respect!!
That's just nuts. Some of the best playing i've had the pleasure of watching!
do you think that maybe you could do a cover of origin's the "aftermath"?
nice shirt too
absolutely fascinating!!!
I’ve watched this so many times in 5 years, it’s easily the best drum cover on UA-cam. The drum patterns on this song are just fucking godly to begin with, and you do them so perfectly. Paoli’s parts for this song are so full of accents and changes that the drums are like a song of their own even underneath the other 5 instruments and layers on top of it. I would just listen to the drums on this song if I could and be just as satisfied as listening to the full song cause there’s so much content there. God damn it.
Hey man, pleeease do a drumcover of Born Of Osiris - Behold !!
Still there is no drumcover out there, but YOU definitely have the potential to master such a diffcult song !!
Anyone comeback watching this after 6 year??
Chalera Official he’s in obscura now
10 years
Absolutely stellar performance!!
Absolutely flawless. You amazing, amazing man.
Hey do The Egoism from the Agony album!!! My favorite one off that album👍👍👍
Bravo!!!!
zornzon Do you like fleshgod apocalypse?
IMF98 - Probably my favorite technical death metal band. Francesco P. is our drummers favorite blast beat drummer. Mafia is such a rippn' ep. I own all their albums \m/
Wow nice I only heard of them when agony came out.. And yeah Francesco Paoli is a beast
IMF98 - True that for sure.
holly shit.. can i buy a porche if i steal that drum sets and sell it?
i think yes
+Giri Dwiputra The cymbals alone probably cost as much as the drums.
+Giri Dwiputra i´d rather have that drumset tbh =)
one of those cymbals could buy my entire drum kit haha
+Giri Dwiputra Each one of those cymbals minus the splashes smaller than 10" is at minimum 240$ A majority of those appear to be in the 350$ range like that china, ride, and hand hammered sandblasted dry crash in the very center.
I only clicked because of how beautiful that kit is, but I stayed for the skill.
Dude you are honestly my favorite drummer to watch
3:57 SCORE: 99%
He missed 1 hit with his right hand
looks like he just accidentally hits that stack a little bit but still hits the ride bell,
the more conclusive 99% miss is at 4:46, right hand misses the snare on the 4hit roll
wtf
^
yeah that what I say haha
Hey david, I love watching your videos. Your such an amazing talent. Not only is your drumming skills amazing but the fact that you cover such difficult songs while nailing them note for note is a feat in itself. Please never stop making videos.
I love it when you do a roll and nail it......YOU SMILE LIKE YOU NAILED IT!!!! great drummer!
even though I dont like this kind of drumming at all
awesome skillz dude
Forky Forklift "I dont like this kind of drumming at all". What? Good drumming? Lol!
steelhorseclub making as much noise and doing it fast as possible.
As oppose to what? Slow and silent?
steelhorseclub do you even play the drums? If so, you should know that there are other kinds of drumming existing. and its good that way. I dont like that kind of metal, but this drummer still got my respect. so where is the problem?
Forky Forklift I know what you mean. This skill level open many doors, but close some others. Personally, i really don't want to push my technique by this way because i don't want to become like Thomas Lang or Mike Mangini. I my opignon, there is a technical limit between speed and musicality and i don't want to pass over this limit. I prefer technic like Jojo Mayer, Chris Dave, Colayuta or Quest Love.
Are you human? Damn
Flawless!!! So crisp and precise. I think I have a new fav metal drummer...
You are the best!Pure awesomeness!

Truly bonkers and truly brilliant playing!
Wow. He is absolutely Amazing.
