Georgia Tech vs Georgia 1992 Halftime Show "The Tarp Incident"

- The Georgia Tech Band shows what they think of UGA's new "G" logo... by overlaying a tarp with a "GT" logo on top of it.
The band is playing the 1812 overture, but you can't tell... because of all the booing. Now, you too can see the best attended halftime show in history.
Thanks so much for posting this! I was in the trumpet section, and I couldn't even hear the cannon we shot off at the end of the 1812 Overture! :) Funniest thing I've ever experienced. We lost the game, but we won half-time!
We didn't take the cannon to Athens, but we did use it at the home game before this. IIRC, we borrowed it from the KAs.
Hello... Fourth Tuba on the left here. The "tarp" was painted on green carpet, the kind you find on the floor of peoples' enclosed sunrooms. It was indeed created for the 1991 Kickoff Classic to give us a bit of a home-field advantage at the Meadowlands in NJ against Penn St. (Spoiler: it didn't work). It hung around the Couch building collecting dust until we found a better use for it the following year, video evidence above. Our drum majors said this was our best performance because all the extra noise forced us to watch them for the beat and not just listen across. The ultimate irony was that after the UGA fans were done booing us they hurried out to buy beer and totally missed the UGA band.
The U(sic)GA band should thank the Tech band - it was probably the most applause they've ever gotten for their halftime show because everyone hung around after booing.
#yourewelcome
Or the fans all went to pee during the Redcoat performance.
Absolute genius. And the fact that the Mutts hate it is what makes it so great! To say it "defaced" the field is ridiculous. This was the perfect kind of prank. It did not damage or vandalism. It did not impede the activities of anyone else since it was placed down for Tech's show and removed immediately afterward. As someone noted, this is very different than dropping your shakers while (attempting) spelling Georgia at Auburn and leaving it for their band to march through. I ask...if you have any intellectual honestly...which is more classless? It's an obvious answer.
And it was some mutt fans, (in fact, probably cheerleaders) that punctured or deflated the large inflatable Buzz that stood in the south east corner of the end zone at BDS in '89. It happened during the game, and THAT is real vandalism...not covering a logo. Dwags still got their butts kicked.
good stuff. i marched in '93. hate that i missed this.
Best part was forcing UGA fans to watch the entire GT Band show!
I was at this game as well. I was visiting a HS buddy of mine who was attending UGAg at the time. We sat in his fraternity's block. I didn't hear a single note. Good stuff
I was on the field for this event as well. For clarification, the logo was not a tarp, but the actual Grant Field logo taken up when the astroturf was replaced with new carpet turf around 1990. The Band acquired the logo and it hung in the music building. The directors had no knowledge that the props crew had rolled it up and shoved it in a bus on the morning of the game. Because the game was (as always) on Thanksgiving weekend, a few of us drove separately from our hometowns and had to park across campus from the band and the stadium. It was an interesting and lonely walk with a lot of hatred spewed our way, but also a few nice Dawg fans appreciative of our pride. Good memories.
Don’t know where you got this story but I was in band and your story is totally wrong. Nice piece of fiction though. Might go over better if there weren’t so many people who were in the band that know the true story.
No, the band made this carpet in order to have the GT logo on the field for the Kickoff Classic earlier in the season. They used it to know where their spots were on the field because they had to learn the drill super fast b/c of how early the game was. All the rest of your story sounds about right.
That was the year that many college football teams in the south were celebrating their 100th season. The logo Ugag used that year said "100 years of Georgia Football" in an oval instead of their Green Bay copy oval G.
I played in that stadium with a marching band twice. The first was in high school, where I got nasty comments from u(sic)GA fans while walking to the stadium in my blue and orange high school band uniform. The second was 1984 when we won 35-18. Some dork in the stadium knocked my arm to spill my coke on my band uniform.
Those dwags are so easy to taunt.
They have difficulty with the art of spelling right scooter
This stunt was awesome, just like your record against Georgia the last 9 years. Please help me by the way! As a collector of rare and valuable items, I'm looking for one of those rings yall minted after the 08 victory over Georgia. Why is it a collectors item? It commemorates an event that happens about once a decade.
This was awesome.... the balls kids used to be allowed to have lol
