There's a bunch of videos of this flyover on this site. This one is the best of them all in my opinion. Quite possibly the worst seat to see the game, turns out to be the best seat for the flyover. Definately top 5 flover video of all time! Bravo!
Look at this from the Navy's report: The board concluded the pilots chose to use barometric altitude measurements (feet above sea level) instead of radar altitude measurements (feet above ground level) but failed to adjust their warning systems accordingly, the newspaper reported. By the time the alarm sounded, it was too late to correct the mistake. FYI: Atlanta is between 700 - 1000 ft above sea level. They obviously ignored warnings, no wonder they were grounded!
I was at this game and it was the loudest thing I have ever heard in my 23 years on this earth. Friends of mine were in the porta-john and they told me that they honestly hit their knees and started praying because they thought someone was bombing Atlanta. Crazy loud fly by.. Thought they were going to hit the Metal tower on top of that one building after they went across the stadium!
Neither of the two pilots flew for the navy again after that flight. My XO Capt Cummings was friends with the lead pilot and told us today that he had the above sea-level altitude toggled instead above-ground altitude, so he thought he was over the 1000 foot legal limit, but in fact he wasn't. The wingman missed that building by 36 feet.
If you've already been in the air for awhile, all systems are go, visibility is severe-clear, you have about 3000 hours in type, and your headed in a fixed direction at a suitable fixed speed, the chances of your interrupting a football fan's beer guzzling by crashing into his face are fairly remote. I agree it's too bad we're all so locked into being a Nanny Society that we've lost some verve along the way. My own guess is that the two pilots will, in fact, be reinstated to flying duty.
@wsucouga I'm so glad people like you are alive and know how to post things on the internet-- Much in the same way that I'm glad that there is cancer, or that there are children in Africa that die of AIDS every day, or that my 5-year-old Labrador Retriever got hit by a car yesterday...so so glad...
I think it was awesome....nothing better than seeing our military planes flying low and close after the National Anthem. Sort of like an exclamation point and an "in your face" to others. Wish we had more of'em....and thank you to the service people who fly these planes for us!
@mckenzielex11 hell yes a sense of humor !!!! On behalf of all G-Tech alum, football season ticket holders let me just say DAMN am i glad C.J. Spiller graduated !!!! catch ya in "Purgatory Valley "
Just for everyone's info, according to the online Tech Football Fan Guide, video cameras are prohibited in BDS (which doesn't make much sense with still cameras able to shoot HD video nowadays?!?). Also, there is another flyover scheduled for the UGAG game on Nov 28th...Woo-hoo!
@jameswestuk Nah you're probably thinking of the Univ of Iowa vs. Ohio State flyover last November. The lead pilot lost his job over that one. SUPER low flyover... but super awesome to see.
Wow! I just read the details on this from wikipedia and this was indeed and a violation. The Atlantic commander Rear Admiral permanently removed their flying status. Pilots made a bad choice.
Wow...I feel like we were the only ones in BDS that didn't know this was coming!?! Did they publish it in the Technique or something? You obviously knew right where you needed to be, the top of Sec 217 or 218 maybe? GREAT JOB! I hope they have another for the UGAG game. What'd you shoot it with, if you don't mind me asking? I've got a Sony HD camcorder, but I don't think they allow them in BDS. My dig camera shoots awful video...Yours is AWESOME!!
funny you say that its totally true with other countries as well.. one of the squadrons i worked with in the usmc had/has a british pilot flying f-18c with them hes a FLTLT (flight lieutenant) and hes pretty good at it from what i saw on a daily basis lolol
Iceman: You're everyone's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air, you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous. Maverick: That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous.
Have you ever been to a UGA game? The campus afterwards looks like a cross between a landfill and a flea market. Not to mention the gallons of drool that need to be mopped from the stadium.
It's absolute horseshit that either of them should have gotten permanently grounded. Slap on the wrist, 30 days cool-off, buy 'em a beer for a good show would have been more like it. This is the new, kinder-gentler, pussified, politically correct Navy officer corps we have today. That Admiral is more concerned about his career (CYA) than he is being a Leader. He's a perfumed prince manager-executive and a disgrace to Navy tradition. There was nothing dangerous or reckless about this low pass.
@Garuda03 These guys did get permanently grounded. Search 'Family says grounded pilot's record being ignored' on Atlanta Journal-Constitution's website
Unfortunately, the Navy brass is very unforgiving when it comes to unsafe flight. It is usually a one strike deal. The next time these guys will fly will be when they say "This is the Captain speaking" from the cockpit of a Boeing 737 or other civil aircraft. Sad but true.
Man I hope I don't ever live my life in fear like you .FLY NAVY . Like you have that authority anyway . Call your Mom she will make you feel import . Once again FLY NAVY .
MrCerealkiller40, I read the AJC also and rules are there for a reason. You're flying a $35M high performance jet and getting PAID for it! What more fun is there!?! You want to barnstorm, get your own darn plane and fly it! helmet0628, Maverick would have been grounded in the REAL navy and would never have made it to top gun. It was a movie! And just to let you know, I was in the Air Force. Follow the rules or fly a desk! Especially in public!!
My guess is that the pilots wanted to make the flyover as loud as possible by engaging the engines' afterburners. If they were to do that with the gear/flaps up, they would more than likely pass over the stadium beyond the allowed speed of 250kts, therefore they lowered the gear/flaps to slow themselves down enough to go full burner without worrying about busting their airspeed limit.
For those of you complaining about the permanent grounding of the pilots involved. What would you have been saying if they would have had an engine failure, hydraulics problem, etc. during their approach or departure runs? And don't say " wouldn't happen" or such because you don't know when it's going to happen Bird strikes, mechanical failures can happen anywhere or time. As checking common sense, they're the ones who need that checked, not the one who pulled their wings.
@kingbiggysmalls , yeah, I know that, but people were commenting that it is okay to fly as low as they want and they didn't understand why an Admiral would be enforcing the rules. Just read some of the comments, these people have no idea how strict the military really is. Back in the day guys would meet way out some where to do the crazy stuff. I was just commenting how stupid it is to do something like this in public. It may look cooll, but definitely not worth being grounded!
now that statement I agree with totally, know when you can get away with something in front of all those people there's no way somebody wasn't going to cry, I wasnt worried aboput them clipping a building those guys know theyre business but iwish they wouldnt have tried the didnt use the right Cal. excuse and do a "Dirty Pass "
@ls1z28chris Wrong. These planes are inherently unstable at low speed - should an engine fail at that altitude, the plane becomes a bomb over 40,000 spectators, or a crowded 10-lane interstate, or some other place in the congested intown area of a large city. In San Diego a year or so ago, an F18 flamed out and because of the poor decision of the pilot, ended up in someone's house, where it killed a woman and her mother and daughter. The 1000-foot rule protects both the pilot and audience.
dude, they don't just let some random marine just exchange his job for an F-22 pilot, only elite and pilots with LOTS of flight time and experience fly an F-22, they are not even in full production yet?
@dhurstman I agree! Considering all the fans at the game paid for the 2 jets and the training of the pilots with tax dollars, the jets should be allowed to fly as low as the taxpaying owners want it to. I spent many years in the Air Force and finally got out because their policies are embarassingly disgraceful!
You guys mad at the navy would be thinking differently if they clipped a skyscraper and crashed in the middle of downtown ATL. Somebody didn't do their flight checks or they would have set their instruments correctly. Question is, did they do it on purpose to try to get away with flying low? "Oops, sorry I forgot to set my altimeter, my bad!" Admiral didn't fall for it, probably an old fighter jock himself.
@Stignatz Department of the Navy safety regulations regarding the operation of jet aircraft in a fly-over of a stadium filled with >40,000 people is somehow commentary on the "Nanny Society?" Fuck, where is my tin foil hat?
@mycooltube2000 The navy has rules for a reason. I'm sure your attitude would be completely different had they had a mishap and killed several hundred in the stadium that day. They don't screw around and give slaps on the wrist in the military when you break the rules like in the civilian world. Don't push your civilian ideals upon them for defending this country the same way they have for over 200 years now.
@mckenzielex11: I didn't say that they should be grounded, just that they acted with wreckless, juvenile selfishness by disobeying orders. Millions of dollars in training and two piloting careers wasted. Not worth it.

To a petrolhead, that's an orchestra at full blast!!
I was sitting in the north end zone, but a bit lower. It was so loud.
Think the pilots lost their wings for it.
It was awesome. Go jackets!
Brings tears to my eyes every time. This makes u a proud American reguardless of who your pulling for in the game

...but he missed it. That's the important part :)
This is the fly overs everyone wants!!
nice work on the video. Flyovers are awesome.
If you've already been in the air for awhile, all systems are go, visibility is severe-clear, you have about 3000 hours in type, and your headed in a fixed direction at a suitable fixed speed, the chances of your interrupting a football fan's beer guzzling by crashing into his face are fairly remote.

Very cool. Thanks for posting. Excellent video!
The lead pilot was forced to resign from the Navy in lieu of a court martial.
man... i love the sound of those engines! AMERICAN POWER!!!! HECK TO THE YEAH
Worst seats for the game = best seats for flyover!!
Great video and comments during the flyover.
withchza Bro you seem a little up tight . I respect your opinion &catch ya on another post .Peace&Godspeed
It was awesome- I didn't know it was coming til seconds before
They should let the crowd vote on whether or not they get to keep their wings :-)
right in time a few seconds after the national anthem
good job :P
@bowlingwithzombies Even though she isn't here, people will ALWAYS long for the Tomcat. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN BABY!!!
I think it was awesome....nothing better than seeing our military planes flying low and close after the National Anthem. Sort of like an exclamation point and an "in your face" to others. Wish we had more of'em....and thank you to the service people who fly these planes for us!
What do you fly ? other than Microsoft flight simulator 2
awesome video, i felt like i had to duck on that one
This was in Atlanta?! Ugh! I always miss the good stuff!
benefits of nosebleed seats
@mckenzielex11 hell yes a sense of humor !!!! On behalf of all G-Tech alum, football season ticket holders let me just say DAMN am i glad C.J. Spiller graduated !!!! catch ya in "Purgatory Valley "
THANKYOU for clearing things up man! :)

Haha I was watching that episode of That 70s show earlier today..
@jameswestuk Nah you're probably thinking of the Univ of Iowa vs. Ohio State flyover last November. The lead pilot lost his job over that one. SUPER low flyover... but super awesome to see.
nice, check out this fly over NYC , like you have never seen it ..
this is what's missing in britain. we never get flyovers at any sporting occasion apart from the british grand prix
Wow! I just read the details on this from wikipedia and this was indeed and a violation. The Atlantic commander Rear Admiral permanently removed their flying status. Pilots made a bad choice.
best yet!
Goose, Maverick.... GET IN MY OFFICE NOW!
Wow...I feel like we were the only ones in BDS that didn't know this was coming!?! Did they publish it in the Technique or something? You obviously knew right where you needed to be, the top of Sec 217 or 218 maybe? GREAT JOB!

Only VFA-136...my former Navy squadron!!!! Go Knighthawks!!!!
funny you say that its totally true with other countries as well.. one of the squadrons i worked with in the usmc had/has a british pilot flying f-18c with them hes a FLTLT (flight lieutenant) and hes pretty good at it from what i saw on a daily basis lolol
AWESOME FLYOVER !
This guy gets it
Iceman: You're everyone's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air, you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous.
Maverick: That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous.
Have you ever been to a UGA game? The campus afterwards looks like a cross between a landfill and a flea market. Not to mention the gallons of drool that need to be mopped from the stadium.
is that official?
It's absolute horseshit that either of them should have gotten permanently grounded. Slap on the wrist, 30 days cool-off, buy 'em a beer for a good show would have been more like it. @LetsPlayStarcraft They were actually grounded permanently
@Garuda03 These guys did get permanently grounded. Search 'Family says grounded pilot's record being ignored' on Atlanta Journal-Constitution's website

Yes it is, my son in law is a F-18 pilot and his orders were changed as a result of these two sadly losing there wings... Navy has no humor in this...
these guys got in trouble according to vfa-136 on wikipedia
Man I hope I don't ever live my life in fear like you .FLY NAVY . Like you have that authority anyway . Call your Mom she will make you feel import . Once again FLY NAVY .
Notice how they also dropped the gear too. Way too close and low. So much unsafe shit happening here.
The F-22 has been in service since 2005.
You're the reason people get out of the Air Force.
@ls1z28chris Sorry my comment was directed at the commeter below you , not this comment. The new improved Firefox strikes again..
I think a 1000 ft. is too high for a good fly over..but this is certainly too low, especially given their surroundings. It is an awesome sight though.
Sadly the avaiators who did this fly over were permanently grounded by the navy
Curious: Why did they have the gear down?
My guess is that the pilots wanted to make the flyover as loud as possible by engaging the engines' afterburners. If they were to do that with the gear/flaps up, they would more than likely pass over the stadium beyond the allowed speed of 250kts, therefore they lowered the gear/flaps to slow themselves down enough to go full burner without worrying about busting their airspeed limit.
did they lose their wings for this?
They both lost their wings over this..... all the years of hard work, lost over this....
@xTomcatsForeverVF84x too bad they are no longer in service :(
Awesome as hell!!! And now they can't fly anymore - sucks for them!
Low and slow is the Navy way!
Low and fast is the Air Force way!
For those of you complaining about the permanent grounding of the pilots involved. @bukakee1 wrong plane...
@sk8thedge Yes they did.

Well done
wow..that was low...
Turn in your wings… 😢
Sadly, both pilots lost their wings because they flew to low.
I love them! Fly Navy!!
@MrThatsYe no, low and in a rolling, lumbar-supportive chair is the air force way.
Gotta have Rules Baby or we might as well be up a tree flinging our Crap at each other.
It sucks that they were grounded for flying so low.
......wow! permanently grounded? some get a slap on the hand in comparison for worse things that have happened. can they appeal?
@ls1z28chris Wrong. These planes are inherently unstable at low speed - should an engine fail at that altitude, the plane becomes a bomb over 40,000 spectators, or a crowded 10-lane interstate, or some other place in the congested intown area of a large city. @bootsiebanty ,
+1 to you sir! You're like a life preserver in a sea of bull shit!
They probably think top gun is a documentary!
@RazzMcTazz ONLY FROM A CLEMSON FAN
No....No....F-14's DO A REAL FLYBY =D
DAM that was low
dude, they don't just let some random marine just exchange his job for an F-22 pilot, only elite and pilots with LOTS of flight time and experience fly an F-22, they are not even in full production yet?
awesome seats LOL

Super Hornets? pffft.......Tomcats show em how its done!!! Anytime Baby!!!
Yush
@FSXMAO haha ooh rah

Admiral didn't fall for it, probably an old fighter jock himself.
@bukakee1 LOL the only thing that could have made that comment better is if they were actually F-14s.
Those pilots were expelled after this flyover because they flew too low.
Too bad they didn't strafe the place while they were at it.
@Stignatz
Department of the Navy safety regulations regarding the operation of jet aircraft in a fly-over of a stadium filled with >40,000 people is somehow commentary on the "Nanny Society?"
Fuck, where is my tin foil hat?
@JMPMASTR178 This is asinine "logic". The pilots know the score. They broke the rules and that's that.
@mycooltube2000 The navy has rules for a reason. I'm sure your attitude would be completely different had they had a mishap and killed several hundred in the stadium that day. @FSXMAO Let's see an seamen fly an F-22...
They got banned
I would have crap my pants. #justsayin
tractor . make you feel better
Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full...
@mckenzielex11: I didn't say that they should be grounded, just that they acted with wreckless, juvenile selfishness by disobeying orders. Millions of dollars in training and two piloting careers wasted. Not worth it.
Nice to see my tax dollars went to something useful for once.
F/A-18 Super Hornet !!!!
