  • At the end of live coverage of the Republican Convention from San Diego, BBC 1 closes down at just after 4 AM in the early hours of 16 August 1996.
    There's a trail for a repeat of Michael Parkinson interviews, a weather forecast from John Kettley, then the national anthem, and eventually Test Card F.

    You know it’s late when they say “good morning” instead of “good night.“

    I still think this is the bbcs best ever look: 91-late 97 was pretty much my infancy and defined by the '2' idents and this bbc1 globe (though with it being so obscured it almost looks like a fancy crystal ball!)

    This is the second time BBC1 had to closedown at 4am in the morning. Unlike Live Aid of '85, this 4am closedown was because of the Road to the White House coverage when the 1996/97 USA Presidential Election of Bill Clinton vs Bob Dole vs Ross Perot was about to take effect in less than three months.

      Except they'd have to pay repeats fees for a tiny audience. Cheaper to shut down.

    In August 1996, Princess Diana and Prince Charles had to divorce each other after 15 years of their marriage. A year later, Princess Diana died in a Paris car crash.

    rare clock to close

    • @DBIVUK
      @DBIVUK  7 років тому +3

      It wasn't actually all that rare at the time - the clock did appear occasionally, and there were certain times when it was usual. It was usually shown in the few seconds leading up to the regular news bulletins, for instance. But on-screen clocks went out very soon after, partly because digital transmission introduced delays of unpredictable lengths.

      though it wasnt rare

    • @aidanlunn7441

      Clocks went out of favour on ITV stations first, although due to the fragmented nature of ITV at that time they disappeared at various times on different ITV stations. I believe Central were the first to dispense with them, they just used ATV's timepiece with a Central caption instead. That didn't last long after their 1982 launch. I don't know about who was *the* last but a strong contender would be my home region, Yorkshire, who I remember were still using clocks up to their 1999 "hearts" rebrand.
      Thames and LWT both used clocks randomly at first. Then Thames seemed to drop them for news intros, using their ident and announcer instead, only using the clock for closedowns or introducing TV-am when they went 24 hours. LWT used either their ident or clock at news intros or closedowns (depending on what the announcer or transmission controller wanted) until their 1986 rebrand, when they got rid of clocks completely.
      C4 abnd the BBC continued with clocks for some time after that, C4 scrapping them with their 1996 rebrand and the BBC phased them out on both channels with the BBC1 balloons, first scrapping live clocks, having prerecorded ones for the regions' introductions to national news then scrapping them completely.

      A late closedown means a channel is on their way to 24 hour broadcasting.
