Last BBC1 closedown with blue/gold globe - 15/2/91

- Thirty years ago today, BBC1 and TWO were about to change their on-screen identities, so it was goodbye to the Computer Originated World that had been spinning since the start of Eastenders around 6 years earlier. Also uploaded is the BBC TWO closedown from the same night, where the announcer gives the vanishing logo a mention. Bring back the world I say...it has a sort of Oneness about it!

I find myself watching things on the Internet that make me yearn for life without the Internet.
This was only 3 years and 10 months before I used the internet for the first time.
@@ajs41 you must have been a very early bird then!
I'd already been on the internet for 2 years by then. Still miss that globe, though.
I feel u
One of the first things I ever searched UA-cam for was the CBS Late Movie theme from the 1970s. To this day that music takes me back to warm summer nights and the simplicity of adolescence.
I miss the 1985 BBC 1 Computer Originated World alot because that's my favourite BBC 1 symbol that made my childhood though I'm an Eighties baby.
This is very much a product of the time lol, did not expect to hear Jim’ll Fix It
I used to work at BBC R&D and we kept the decomm'ed COW in a cupboard near my desk. Sadly one of those times before the ubiquity of smartphones that would have necessitated photos. I can't believe I don't have photos of half the stuff I saw.
Hard to believe they made that globe animation in 1985, still looks great. (Of course, you could render it in real-time at higher resolution on your watch, these days.)
Such a classic and stylish look
Nice to hear the *Great British* National Anthem being played at closedown showing the iconic BBC Globe!
Absolutely.
over 30 years before the lyrics were changed for the new sovereign
No, no, not Jim'll fix it!
I am loving these fantastic uploads they are wonderful
“ Go to bed Spotty!”
No! I really like this tune! Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I miss the BBC globe
An end of another era at the time.
3:44 God Save The King.
The End of an era and the beginning of a sad decline that has led us to the dreadful oneness indents with groups of people looking bored. Where did it all go wrong?
I wouldn't agree with that. Its more accurate to say that the real decline was the Rhythm and Movement ident package. That was dreck, The Circles were a slight incline, and then, as you say, the 'dreadful' oneness idents.
Oneness was crap but the current Lens idents are pretty cool
True. It's a big improvement but it took a long time coming
BBC1 started using this God Save the Queen version in 1973.
Woah! They have been using it for nearly 50 years then
@@CaptainX2012 Or...had. BBC One stopped using GSTQ in 1997. I wonder if BBC's radio division continues to use GSTQ at closedown somewhere?
@@chasebakerofthe209 They certainly do. BBC Radio 4 play God Save the King (as it is now) each night after the Shipping Forecast at just before 1am
BBC Wales did things a bit differently for the closedown. They played their anthem 'Land of My Fathers' first, then just a short burst of GSTQ.
@@speakfreeley4473 As they should
"The Full Wax" clip featuring the song "Tonight" from the Sondheim musical "West Side Story". I have an American DVD copy of the 1961 film adaptation.
I know the feeling.
Just look at the quality of that Saturday evening schedule. Maybe there's the odd duff offering but nothing like the rubbish you have to avoid now. It's why I don't mind missing saturday night tv these days.
The BBC Globes were much better than silly bits of video of exercise classes and steel bands, and such like!
They obviously wanted to put a 'human' face on their idents... but then there's all the political correctness to consider! Maybe they could combine the two somehow?
@@tv68uk The BBC Globes represented the Earth, which is FULL of human faces! 👍😂
100 per cent agree with you there!!! Much prefer the original BBC globe 🌎
It's a damn shame they wouldn't update this with the new BBC One ident than the s**t they use now!
Goodbye Cool World
Ah, the simpler times...
Classic!
Ooo, continuity!
Come back to us C.O.W.,
Come baaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!!!!
they brought back this globe before NI (Northern Ireland) shut down analog television

What if Martyn Lewis says "Good evening" when it comes to 1am or so
@dwho19951 after midnight it turns to morning thats why martyn said good morning
@peterwilliamskelhorn6675 But he should've said good evening because midnight remains part of the evening (which may be extended to 5am) in accordance with the RadioTimes. At 5am, it turns into morning. Even radio presenters said "Good evening" between 12am and 5am, and that's the truth. Okay. But do not jump into conclusions where possible, please? Alright. Deal!!!
@@dwho19951 there was a BBC 1 closedown in 1996 when they closed at 4am and said good morning. Then at 6am they started up with business breakfast
