This has got to be one of the most depressing BBC closedowns from the 90s I have ever seen. It literally starts with a news report on a death of a famous royal family member, before talking about non-stop rain, before showcasing another death, before highlighting two other programmes on those same deaths, to just pulling the plug with a tribute screen over the national anthem. You could literally not get any more depressing than that during a closedown, but the circumstances at the time left them with literally no other choice.

@Hugo Guidon she was in a taxi in france when her car collided with another car, causing her to be killed by injuries sustained from the shattered glass of the windscreen and physical trauma from the crash itself.

@Hugo Guidon It's also worth noting that the paparazzi in part caused the crash, and HRH Princess Diana's driver was intoxicated at the time. Everyone in that car crash, excluding the Princess's bodyguard was killed.

It was rare that sidebar on BBC1 (2:19) was changed to plain black at Diana The Nation's Farewell, because it was only seen on BBC2 from mid-September 1992 to October 1997.

Didn’t BBC1 use to have black sidebar for Open University sometimes?

Not sure what time this would have aired, but guessing was rather late. Guessing the senior presenters (Sissons, Lewis etc) would have been in bed for the early start the next day so Maxine shifted over from BBC World to present.

Wait they didn’t even closedown without noting what hosts were on BBC Radio that night

Would presume, as this was during a period of national mourning, the usual closedown protocol was dropped until after the funeral - perhaps mentioning on previous days continuous news coverage through the night on 5live and the World Service (unless R4 was still on the air when BBC1 closed down for the night).

In 1997, BBC1 had to open the broadcast at 6:00am because of the funeral of princess diana of wales.

BBC One on a regular Saturday morning would have opened up at 7am usually with Harry and the Hendersons before their Saturday breakfast news summary at 7.25am. The funeral on this Saturday of course was extraordinary and deserved an earlier start. From November 1997, BBC One wouldn't close down, just hand over to BBC News 24 for rolling news.
