His thoughtful vocabulary sounds atypical because he is one of the few educated car reviewers out there. Most of the guys reviewing cars these days not only know nothing about cars, but also don't have the proper education to speak professionally. Tom Voelk is another good reviewer too although I think Steve is better.
"A car far too capable for roads with speed limits". That's a sad thing for North America. WTF with that 55-60 MPH speed limits? you have wide, straight, smooth highways over there :)
wide and straight absolutely but smooth not so much man our roads here have been neglected a lot for example here in chicago you have a better chance of finding parking in downtown than a street without potholes. The past few winters haven't helped our roads either they were brutal freshly paves roads looked like the moon after winter lol
Wide and straight, sure. Smooth? Absolutely not. The roads here are so badly maintained, that driving off-road would provide a smoother driving experience. That coupled with the ridiculous speed limitations and overzealous police make this country one of the worst places to buy cars like that BMW.
Stephen N oscar trujillo I've been in Dover, Delaware area for some years, and the first state's roads are maintained very well like they even microsurfacing-sealing all main roads once a year. That's why I said that "smooth" roads you have there :) I see now, it's not a thing for all across North America.
unfortunately people dont really know how to drive here. Safety and liability is everything. It's really a shame more roads don't have higher limits (like interstate 95 in my opinion should be 150mph limit.) I understand the safety of driving slower in cities, but it still makes no sense to me on super highways. Last 2 cars i bought were smaller more efficient engines since i would never get to use the faster more fun cars. Too many cops on roads. Track days here are ludicrous expensive too ($350/day min + expenses.) I think this is why so many of us own superbikes.
Here is everything you need to know about BMW If you own one, it's because you have importance issues, so you need to feel important on the road, because your not in real life. The intimidating headlights proves my last point, the drivers of these cars are often clowns on the road, with no regard for public safety and often these cars can be found living on council estates where the owners can't really afford to own them, oh and that's because BMW are laughing all the way to the bank, your not buying German, component parts are mainly made in japan. Even the badge is not made in Germany!
+Skeletor I own one and had the V8 M3 vert before it. This car can't hold a candle to the M3. I'm trying to get rid of it. It's not the V8 vs V6 at all. I could give a S..t The thing sounds so different it's crazy. Not what I wanted at all. The 8 sound was amazing and power delivery was super smooth all the way to 8200 rpm!! Oh how I miss that car. Just smiles for days. Now I get in my M4 and listen to the thing slap fart crackle every shift from time I press the gas too get going. I find my self actually working the throttle to avoid making the sound. This car rides great in comfort mode, bonus. Less so ..the top rattles or more like squeaks (SUPER annoying), power is either nothing or crazy. Did I mention I miss my M3? I hate sounding like an ungrateful a hole but I work really hard to have it and it's not worth it at all.
+Film Makers MC Williams You miss driving a car that was 300+lbs heavier, with a dated interior and no torque unless you revved it out in every gear? Cool. Sell the F80 and go buy a E90, they are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day.
Great review. I still miss the V8, but I understand the return of the Straight 6 , now with turbo power. It's more cost effective, however I loved that V8 snarl!
Here is my thought (owner of a new f82, changed from my e92). I thought about getting the new Camaro, Audi, jag, Benz, and even the corvette. Fortunately I stuck with bmw and now I'm so happy that I did. You see I have two friends who recently converted to the new corvette and they are already having problems with the car :(. Don't get me wrong those new corvettes look nice!!!! But for some reason the German engineering is still far more superior than the Americans. I do miss the roaring sound of my v8 engine but it only took me a few days to absolutely fall in love with the two turbo engine. It's light and so easy on the steering I just have day dreams of driving the car. It's such an exciting and fun experience, something I didn't really experience with my e92. Sure the engines were louder but honest to god (not trying to be a homer) you will fall in love with the twin turbo. Just go test drive it like I did. It didn't take me long to say okay time to trade in my old generation and get the new one. :)
on88keys I wanted the 6 speed stick. But after having done an extensive test drive on the 7 speed DCT, I fell in love with it. It's all about preference... I chose the sunroof over the CF. A lot of people would not have done it but I honestly love sunroofs.
beautiful car. Shame you can't really drive it in the US without going to jail (unless you take it to track of course.) Would be a shame to buy the car and not be able to really open it up. Those pesky speed limits keep many from buying these beautiful machines...
TestDriveNow.com featuring Drive Time with Steve Hammes That's not true, I drove the car and tried the launch control, and that was not launch control. Unless it's broken, cause that wasn't a "launch controlled" launch I'm 200% sure of that.
***** Whether it was the temp of the tires, the surface friction, etc. we did a number of launch controls and this was indeed one of them...I'm 300% sure of that.
Great review. I still miss the V8, but I understand the return of the Straight 6 , now with turbo power. It's more cost effective, however I loved that V8 snarl!
+Iwillassasinyou Just drove one, the exhaust note is about perfect. Very quiet at idle and roars at high revs. Only thing I noticed is it goes kinda quiet again cruising around 50-60 mph
The decision to change the M3 coupe's name to M4 is as bad as the use of the Turbo engine in it. My guess is that BMW wanted a way back to the M3 coupe in case the M4 wasn't successful. The whole idea behind the M badge is the normally aspirated engine linked to a manual gearbox, 2 doors not 4, call me classic, old fashioned, whatever. BMW currently does not have a purist car available for purchase, as Porsche does with the 911 GT3. BMW lost its exclusive M drivers, at least they lost me as a customer. My last M3 and the last real M3 was the E46, which I sold because of the expensive maintenance, otherwise it is an amazing car. Goodbye BMW, hello Porsche!
It will most likely arrive again ... but tend to be 1-2 year after the new model. M3 CLS M3 GTS M4 GTR ? :) Also if you think BMW service is expensive (after the 5 year of free) ... welcome to Porsche :)
lol I meant that it was a good review in comparison to other reviews of the M3/4 I like the fact that you mentioned the price of the options, let people know that not checking a few boxes can make the car much less expensive my car has a US MSRP of $71K which is much lower than most test cars... I agree that all of the different driving modes can be a pain to go through but being able to configure the M1 and M2 to your favorite settings helps a lot
Taskin Forkan The more I drive it the more I love it, very comfortable for daily duties but at the press of a button it suddenly turns into a beast. I've taken it to the track twice this year but I'm itching to get back so that I can exploit the cars' full potential
Jim Gianatsis are those tires rubbing at all?? I agree with you about the tires being too skinny, I was thinking of going with 265 front and 285 rear. Also was thinking of getting the KW Height Adjustable springs because I want the more aggressive look, but I'm not sure if I will have problems with scrubbing like you said, I got the CF front splitters and scrubbed them by accident going up a drive way... damage is not too bad but not sure I can handle a drop yet, I'll probably just do spacers instead in the mean time. I love the adaptive suspension by the way
Good review. This is how reviews SHOULD be done. Instead of wasting our time with track times and 0-60 times. Those numbers are to sell the cars and car magazines. Reviews should talk about how the cars run on the street. In stop and go traffic. On country roads perhaps. But mostly city driving. That's where 98% of sports coups and supercars drive. Hope you get your hands on the 2016 911 GT3 RS and 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB. For a "street driven review".
Man that car is nice! I've never driven a "DCT" tranny. I own a 6-speed 335xi and a 5 speed old school e36. How's the DCT in comparison to a manual? I'm highly against automatics for 3-series; don't seem like you'd enjoy the car.
Really like this car,,,only body part i don't care for are those eyelids over the front intakes. nice sheetmvetal, but sometimes reminds me of the last Pontiac GTO in overall shape or maybe even a G6 Pontiac. I am currently in a '14 Cayman S, PDK....totally different car but am really spoiled with Porsche trans and engineering.
Can anyone explain why the M4 seats don't have adjustable knee support, whereas the 435i sportseats do have adjustable knee support? This adjustable knee support is extremely handy.
how much I would love this car but it would kill me be stuck in Chicago traffic and when not in traffic worry about the stupid speed cameras that have been placed throughout the city
86 grand! That is a college education. This proves the destruction of the US dollar by the Federal reserve. Insane inflation rate since the EURO is 30% higher on the exchange rate. Great review!
Hey Steve. You prolly dont read this but for what it's worth I keep coming back to your older videos. I guess it's because of the nice-r cars you drive occasionally. I hope you review the new Lexus LC and some McLarens so we can live the experience through you.

beatuful
It's $170000 in Australia! Why so cheap in America?
In thailand we can only buy 320i sport 184hp (CKD) at the same prize as this m4.

It really sounds great outside, but inside i don't like it all.
I'll take the manual please
the m4. kinda looks like a mini x6 lol

most of the time that is the case, but in some cases its just that the person really likes the car lol. im not much a bmw fan but id get this anyday
Such a fucking beautiful car. My favorite car ever.. If I had 300 grand to spend on a car.. I'd still get this.
Doogie Spence I would take a Ferrari 488 GTB if I had 300k to spend on a car.
best looking M in years, but so many don't like it ultimately due to the way it drives which is brilliant - just not like what they've come to know.

Steve Hammes, could you give us your review about BMW M3 sedan? Videos up 5 minutes, please.
He said he was never a fan of the M3 body style...? What.
The last gen
Oh I know what he's referring to, I'm just baffled on that comment.... I love that body style.
Ethan R Yeah idk why he would say that..e92 was my favorite body style..
Mike Boyajian I can see I'm in the minority on this one.

Had some fun with the M4? 17 city/ 24 highway -- no yucky non-eco tax (aka gas guzzler tax).
Love the look of the new m3/m4 but hate that they went back the inline six. The v8 sounded a million times better. Oh and awesome review as always!

quite possibly the douchiest car BMW has ever produced...and it looks dated already
Is there an M button? Is that competition? My comp pack makes my car easily normal and restricted to a road mashing amazing car.
Lol, this car is upwards of 180k in Australia. The u.s has it very very lucky
He's comparing this car to a m3 when it chassis is more similiar to the m6 but lighter. The wheelbase is lower and wider than the m3.
Just added some upgrades to my M4 BMW, check out the dyno on my page
I'd rather get the challenger hellcat for $20k less.:)
You must work in Detroit... All about the handle
$20k less... and 20 times worse.
Adam Keith 20x better,man. :)
You honestly believe that American deformed POS is better than an M4?
Adam Keith 707hp.
This was a really cool review, I got some more goals after I finish school haha
Steve, I feel like you made a couple references to myself and Chris in this video. ;)
No names were mentioned 😜

I dont like the angry bird grills. those pigs give me nightmares
I am so sick of people using the word über when describing sonething
it's certainly über annoying.
I think it's the first time I've ever used it and I kind of agree with you...though if you're going to it might as well be on a German car.
TestDriveNow.com featuring Drive Time with Steve Hammes Him sick of it doesn't mean you should stop using it. You're an adult and this is your site. Chose whatever words you want
It's a german word for a german car, I would say it fits.
Great review Steve...I have approx 3500 miles on my M4 and I just love it. It does EVERYTHING well - might be the best dd out there!!
The DCT is awesome...cant say anything negative about it
Great review though I'd watch an M4 review for hours.. lol. Wondering if the display is pop-up like in Audis or if it is fixed?
Thanks. It's fixed.
1:53 any one else notice the damn curb rash on the wheels? come on man!
nice
I remember when all you had to do was press the M button to make it perfect!
still can, actually the M4 has 2 programable M buttons
ERIC DAVIS That's not good enough, I just want one button that I can press where BMW themselves have tuned the car to driving perfection. The customer programming their own setting is a bunch of hooey. It's like customizing the background on a smartphone.
Im sure if you asked BMW dealer nicely, they'd do it for you :)
ERIC DAVIS i like your optimism
I think you even have 2 settings now, an M1 and M2 button for two complete setups being stored there. Because otherwise you spend more time fiddling around than driving ;-)
Great review Steve! I'm a new subscriber and your reviews are by far the best! Oh, and the M4 is pretty great too!
Correct me if I am wrong, but did you not mention the HP/ft.lbs. of torque?
Holy cow. How on earth did I forget that? 425hp. I'm losing it lately.
Dct is nice but i think i would choose stick
Great car. Great review. Not so great price.
Keep up the good work Steve.
Dan.
Steve, I would love if you could include what you think of the audio systems in the cars that you test. This M4 had the harmon kardon upgrade and I wanted to hear what you thought of it. Cheers for a great review otherwise.
Good suggestion. The M4 gets pretty noisy inside with the combo of tire and exhaust sounds. So you really have to crank this system to get over that. I liked the HD radio inclusion. Unless you're sitting still it's hard to judge the sound quality.
***** Thank you for your reply. I'm used to Mark Levinson and Burmester systems, but from older 2008-2010 models. Going to go the local BMW dealership to check out the HK system.
What shocks me most is the relative inexpensiveness of the option, compared to 3k to 5k for said systems.
love that car and the color looks great
say Bimmer one more time?! lol !
nice helly Hansen jacket
I fell in love at 3:54 !!!!! Omg
I never leave comments but I have to commend you on your great review. A great blend of detail and execution. I especially liked that you mentioned the cost of the options, but most of all, I loved you're perfect execution! Very well done Steve! I'll check in on this channel for all my car reviews!

Steve vs. LEXUS RCF thoughts?
I have none yet...waiting for my time in the RCF. Hopefully soon.
great review!
Steve, as always, your review is awesome!
Dream car!!!
... Me want
Damn I love this car!
Looks good...sounds horrible!
Turbos make cars sound terrible.
I have a BMW Z4...
...Toy
It s nice but GT-R is faster, better handling ....
way more expensive too, ludicrous if you ask me.
An M4 is an M4, GTR is a GTR. Don't compare both.. I agree Gtr is faster, but handling and reliability im not sure.
M4 MSRP $65k, GTR $100K
I'd also argue that the M4 is the better daily driver. Apples and oranges...
In Europe GT-R is 90k€, M4 is over 100k € :).
Simon Rupsi Don't know where you are in Europe, but here in Germany, the M4 starts at 72k EUR and the GT-R starts at 96k EUR
Are the carbon ceramic brakes worth it?
If you aren't taking it to the track, definately not.
You will find the squeak alot in the city
