    This is definitely one of the best videos on supported spinning. Even after a couple of years of supported spinning, I benefited a lot from the advice to watch the drafting triangle! It's also really good advice on spinning just past the pull-apart stage. Thanks!

    Thanks for this. Supported long draw is just starting to click for me and watching your video helped confirm some things and tweak others. Great video!

    This is the same way I've always spun supported. I wondered if I was just doing it 'wrong.' I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.

    You're doing a great job, but as a beginning spinner I'm so intimidated. I actually ordered a Russian spindle 😲😲😲😲. I am going to keep watching your channel because you do explain things well.

    Sara, I just got to see your tutorial here. I got two Romanian spindles like yours. They are a little bigger than yours but same model. I searched and searched for a tutorial and couldn't find one. I watched Romanian women doing it but couldn't understand since they were so fast. Their spindle had a long pin/leg that was prompted on the floor ( same way you do on that wood log). I even brought Romanian wool to try. lol. I will try and let you know how it works. Thank you so much!

    Your method is very much in tune with the way I instinctively spin supported - I've only been doing this a short while, so you're the expert here! I've been doing drop spindling worsted (BFL, Corriedale, Merino, etc) for a fairly long time, but wanted to get some nice lofty shetland woollen spun up. I'm amazed at the yardage with this method - so satisfying! Many thanks for your helpful vidoe, and reassurance that I'm not 'doing it wrong'. :)

    I am just learning to do this and I have a support spindle that has a small bowl.... my question is do you have tutorials from the very basic of learning this technique. I want to eventually learn how to spin on a wheel...I have a treadle sewing machine that someone turned the sewing machine into an electric one, such a waste of antique quality... but my son is going to build what's needed to turn it into a spinning wheel for me.... my son is 40 and he and his wife live with me. Promised my husband to take care of me, no nursing home for me. He is wonderful and a momma's boy and also a five star chef and is amazing in wood working and many other things... I'm blessed to have him in my life...ok sorry about my life history.. hugs Lynn Weasenforth 💯💜💛💙🌹

      @@TheSpinningSara the way I have been doing it is twist it with my fingers and wind it up... which really isn't working for me...I just don't know exactly how to control the spindle itself, I think I've got the drafting figured out but it still breaks away from the roving every now and then....I want to learn how very much so I know I'll be able to...I had to really desire bobbinlace before I could actually do it.... don't know if this makes sense... hug's Lynn Weasenforth 💯💜💛💙🌹☮️

    I can spin fine with a wheel or drop spindle, thought I'd get myself a supported spindle, it's quite cute it's rod looks like it was a number 2.5 knitting needle cut short and the end filed into more of a point, it has a coin which is held in place with 2 tiny rubber rings, it has no hook or attachment point because I guess it's a supported spindle. I have decided I hate it! Oh I can make yarn if I roll it on my leg, but do you think I can get it to spin in it's bowl? Nooooooo! I can't even get the yarn to stay on it! So this old dog needs help learning a new trick, please. Thank you for sharing your video, I know it's an old one, but I've just found you in my search for help. Cheers from Tasmania!

      Sounds like you got yourself a Takli spindle which is typically for spinning cotton fibers very finely. I suggest trying a different type of supported spindle before you give up on supported spinning entirely! Look for a tibetan style spindle as the added weight at the bottom gives it better spin and heft when learning.

    Hi Sara, How would you ply from your support spindles? Do you wind a ply ball, or insert the two spindles into a shoe-box-kate for plying?

    • @TheSpinningSara
      @TheSpinningSara  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Jake. I actually don't ply directly from my support spindles. I unwind them using my ballwinder and ply from the resulting cake. Most often I am making a 2 ply, so I just ply from the center and outside of one cake at a time.

      I do not. I generally ply on my wheel directly from the spindle cop.

    Thank you for this helpful video, really answered many of my questions. What is the trick that you seem to be able drafting without pinching the yarn and somehow the twist doesn’t go into the triangle area then makes the fiber tense up and undraftable?

    • @TheSpinningSara
      @TheSpinningSara  4 місяці тому +1

      I am using the tip of the spindle to draft against instead of pinching the yarn. I have other videos that also show how I draft with support spindle that probably give better views of that.

    I am having trouble drafting the fiber. I am using roving, but it is not lofty as what you are holding in your left hand. Can you tell me how I can make my roving light and fluffy.

    • @TheSpinningSara
      @TheSpinningSara  7 років тому +4

      If you are hand carding your fleece with actual hand carders, only put locks on the bottom third of the carder and make sure you don't over load it. Each of my rolags are only about 1 gram. If you make them with too much fiber, they won't draft very well. Also, when rolling them up you need to do it with a very light hand. I've found rolling them without the aid of a dowel or even the back of the carder helps to make them fluffier. I just take the carded fiber, lay it on a flat surface and gently roll them up. HTH. Let me know if you need to see a video of this.

    • @rosemarieweber862

      It would be great to see how the fiber (I have roving) is prepared. Experienced spinners make everything look so easy, but they omit the very first step which is fiber preparation for the type of spinning that they are going. Many thanks, Rosemarie

    • @MsShoshi99
      @MsShoshi99 5 років тому +2

      A lot of prepared roving, if not all of it, is too dense for comfortable spinning. I think the step of recarding it into rolags is, as Sara noted, important. It makes a world of difference when you open it up.
