  • So you bought a support spindle. But how do you flick it to add twist to the yarn? This video shows you my way of flicking a support spindle.

    Thanks for going to the trouble of showing so many angles, Sara. I so enjoyed your video because you filled in some gaps for me (eg prep is important!). I note you wind on top the final cop as you go, which feels more efficient than the temporary one that I have been using. So I've got another aspect of spinning to practise! You made this video 5 years ago and it now has a life of its own, informing people like me! It was worth your effort.

    How important is the angle that the yarn is being drafted off the tip? Also how important is the size, shape and location of the cop? I love your video and find them very helpful. You really try your best to teach!

      As long as it isn't 90 degrees from the top, or parallel to the floor/table, the drafting angle doesn't matter. Do what feels comfortable and natural for you :) Shape of the cop is up to you, you can wind how you want and as much as you want as long as the spindle isn't too heavy for you and the cop remains stable. However, keeping the cop lower to the whorl is preferred because it doesn't change the center of gravity as much.
      I am glad you liked the videos! Thanks for watching!! My whole goal for this channel is to provide videos of common issues from different/better angles to make spinning more accessible to those who don't have a local guild/mentor to help them :)

    Wonderful tutorial!! I’ve been watching many of your older videos and your newer ones too and they’re all very helpful. I read the other comments and I realize it doesn’t matter which hand does what, but I’d be curious to know if you are right or left handed?

      I am right handed. My right hand does all the ‘hard work’. I flick my spindles with my right hand and it is my forward hand at the wheel too.

    • @NatalieHilbert
      @NatalieHilbert 6 місяців тому

      That’s what I’ve started doing with supported spindling, and I’m right handed as well. (I’m very much at the beginning of my supported spindle journey) I think drafting from the fold will work quite well for me, so that my left hand doesn’t have to “think” too hard.

      @TheSpinningSara  6 місяців тому

      @NatalieHilbert haha. This actually made me laugh out loud. I love it. I am very RH dominant so trying to do anything too hard with the left is just awful.

    Thanks Sara for all your great instruction. How do I decide which hand to use to flick and which to draft? Does it matter. I’m just beginning and there doesn’t seem to be a clear winner either way. Neither side feels more comfortable than the other. And spinning clockwise or anti clockwise, does it matter? Anything you can tell me I would be very grateful for.

    • @TheSpinningSara

      Kelly Keep Hi Kelly! You can flick with whatever hand feels right to you. There is no right or wrong answer here. Just do what feels the most natural. For most people making yarns, singles are spin clockwise and plied anti clockwise. If you are big into crochet or are a continental knitter, you could explore doing the opposite. Anti clockwise for singles and clockwise to ply. This is because continental knitters and crocheter are technically tightening the yarn twist which can make it harder to get gauge. HTH. Let me know if you have any other questions!

      Spinning Sara thanks very much Sara for that great little nugget of info. I AM a continental knitter so will definitely try out spinning and plying the opposite way😀

    • @TheSpinningSara

      Chris Code you aren’t using the wrong hand. The hand we prefer to hold the spindle/fiber with is a personal choice based on preference and comfort. You are doing it the way that works best for you!
