Fly fishing with a 6 foot 2wt fly rod

  • I bought myself a new toy last week, a 6 foot long 2wt fly rod. A 6" 2wt fly rod is very small. My usual fly rod is a 7"6' 4wt fly rod, and the fly rod that I use for Murray cod is a 9" 8 wt.

Hi Robbie, I haven’t fished in over 40 years but my father, uncles and friends used to fish the inland creeks and dams on the Atherton Tablelands. Mouth Almighty, freshwater Black Bream and Murray Cod were the order of the day. I lived most of my adult life in Sydney and have now retired on the Central Coast but still love the bush. Your videos are relaxing, humorous and just plain fun to watch. I still love and ride a motorbike too, so was delighted to see your Himalayan a couple of weeks back. Keep up the great work!

Hi Bruce, thanks so much for your kind words mate. I love my Himi. I use to have a Yamaha Stryker, 1300cc. It was a beast, but too nice and clean to take off road, so as a result I never rode it.
The Himi is a third of the size but get used about 500% more often.

Impressive way of dealing with the tiger snake. So many people, upon either (a) just seeing the snake, or (b) realizing that it was headed right towards them, would have gone sprinting in the other direction. You were very cool about it.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  2 роки тому +2

Thanks Mark. Well I figured that it went into the bushes to get away from me, so coming out to be near me would be kind of counter intuitive. Haha I love snakes and have a healthy respect for them.

    G'Day Robbie,
You christened your new fly outfit well on that little creek. Short fly rods are great fun. I have a 6'6" 3/4 outfit that I use on tiny creeks and it is ideal for casting a fly into really tight, overgrown places. I usually tie on a Stimulator or Royal Humpy with a light bead head nymph underneath to begin with. If I get plenty of hits on the dry like in the warmer months, I'll take off the nymph but sometimes that nymph comes on and off throughout a session.
I have a shorter 6 foot fly rod that I load with a 5wt line. The rod began life as the same earlier mentioned 3/4wt rod but in a moment of clutzfulness I broke 6 inches off the tip. Grown men do weep! My local tackle shop put on a new tip guide and it works well as a super short fly outfit with the heavier line.
    always enjoy your videos.
    Cheers and Merry Christmas,
    Steve

Hi Steve thanks mate. A 6" 5wt sure sounds interesting. Haha I went into a fly-fishing shop in Benalla this week and loaded up on a few different flies. I have a new fly to try out. Busy week for me mate I'm now cracking a few cans and have a Robbie catch up 👍🏼
The nymph always does the job 🙂
I don't even fly fish but I have noticed 9 out of 10 times they seem to hit the nymph when I'm watching your vids
I might have to learn after the lake I went to today stocked with trophy fish I could see 60-80cm trout everywhere yet they wouldn't hit a thing but anything floating on the surface didn't last long...
Then some blokes show up with what they call fly fishing on spinning gear and it didn't take them long but still they said people who fly fish there catch the most 👍🏼
Next trip I do I'm heading to cod waters instead, I think my tackle box looks way more cod friendly anyway hahaha
