Can we all just admire how Brian lets Flip talk? Too many people on UA-cam try to do an interview, and ask the interviewee questions just to run over them with babble. This is *Q U A L I T Y C O N T E N T.*
I know you have heard this a few thousands times....but I have to give you a tremendous amount of credit for producing some of the finest and most professional series of 'How to videos' on ANY subject on You Tube. Continue to produce and excel on the 'wonderful world' of Fly Fishing. Well done Brian and Mad River Outfitters!
Thanks so much! We really appreciate the kind words. As long as folks keep supporting the shop, we'll keep making videos. Stay tuned and stay in touch.
OK. That whole "rod under the arm" thing you did was BADASS! That's a freakin lesson right there. That really was the secret. I wasn't getting the haul correct, but when I stuck it under my arm, TOTAL GAME CHANGER! Thanks Brian.
The excellently illustrated double haul method and detailed explaination by both Flip and Brian is priceless. The rest is just plain hands on practice. Thank you Brian and Flip. I'm learning so much from this channel. 👍🏼
I admire Flip SO MUCH. I remember watching him on TV as a kid. I've never met him and he got me into fly fishing. 20 years later I've taken that love to Montana, South Dakota, The Smokies, all over the Appalachian mountains, into some salt, and into the mud holes for carp. Thanks Flip. You're a little bit with me every time I hit the water, especially when something is peeling line like a tethered torpedo and my reel is singing the Hymn of Flip Pallot :-)
I have fly fished for over 50 years and had picked up some bad habits on double hauls, and was not good at it. After watching this video, I went to a park a couple of blocks away and started over from ground zero, following your helpful advise. After practicing for a couple of weeks, I finally got it, after all these years. I am much more accurate on floats, and can cast a greater distance on still waters I go on.
I’ve fly fished for 60 years. This is the best instruction on the double haul I’ve seen. One thing that held me back in hauling was left hand position between hauls. The hands need to be close together in the pick up and first part and the majority of both up or back cast and down or forward cast. This allows the haul to be applied just as the wrist applies its action at the end of each up and down motion. Look at Brian’s hand position. Hope this helps others like me who learned to haul without the benefit of expert instruction. Thanks to you and all you bring to fly fishing!
Thanks. I’ve fly fished for 60 years and this is the best double haul instruction I’ve received. The key for me was watching Brian’s demonstration. You must keep the hands close together during the first part of the up and down cast. This allows you to apply the haul just as the wrist adds its action. Thanks for all you do for fly fishing!
This is the best fly fishing 🎣 video I have EVER seen. I have watched it at least 20 times this week. My wife almost has it memorized just sitting beside me listening. I was late 30 min for work because I watched it three times in the parking lot …. GREAT JOB!!!!
Hi Brian, I am from Germany and flyfish for more than 30 years - mostly for trout and atlantic salmon. I often watch your videos and like them not only for the content but as well for the way you present your videos. Being a big fan of "Keep it simple ", it is a real joy to watch you teaching... Keep on going, all the best for you and your Madriver-team. Emil
Kudos to Brian for amazing explanation of the double haul. This provides clarity for something that is abstruse and a bit counterintuitive. The practice tips were especially helpful. Thank you.
Finally!!! I can now say I understand the concept of the double haul. Showing how it super loads the rod and therefore getting more energy from the rod clears things up for me. Thank you both!
@@Madriveroutfitters its me who owes the thanks! I've been fly fishing for 35 years but always river fishing until a few years ago when I started spending more time on still water! A short rod on running water comes second nature to me but it seems that my experience has made me become complacent! It was only once I started to throw more over still water that I realised how much more there is to learn! It's kind of feels like im starting out all over again! Thanks for the help!
This explanation and demonstration in this video is so good you don't even have to practice a double haul. After watching this you'll be able to just do it
Good video, Brian. I enjoyed seeing Flip's explanation, and yours is also clear and focussed. The double haul is one of the most important things fly anglers can ever learn.
I have to say thank you for these videos. Your video explaining the casts as “upcasts and downcasts” made a world of difference for me and this video is going to help me a lot as well now to cast further. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely the best explanation and demo of the use of the double haul I've seen. Been fly fishing for over 35 years and have learned a bunch from every video. Keep up the good work. Tom
Hi Brian, I have watched most of your videos. They not only enhance the physical lessons I have received (you do have to get out and practice after all.) The videos also expand and deepen the knowledge about flyfishing. Some videos, like about the double haul help me focus to get it right with helpful instructions you do not find anywhere else.
You casting that well with your body is by far the coolest thing I’ve seen in a fly fishing video hahaha. And for someone who can’t double haul well, me, I greatly appreciate this advice!
I’m scratching my head wondering why I can’t cast more than 30 feet today, after watching this casually realising I haul on the way up, don’t catch up at the pause, then flick slack spaghetti down 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Brian, I’ll work on this now. Legend 👍
I was about to give up fly fishing because the cast was not working for me. Thanks to y’all’s video once i figured out how it should feel and got the coordination down I can cast to 30 yards easily and dare say even further. Even for short casts I double haul. I’m more accurate and use less energy. Thank y’all so much!!! I’ve only been at it for a few months, but the cast was killing me. Caught a few fish, but I know if I wasn’t in my kayak I could not shoot the line more than 20 feet. Y’all are life savers.
What a legend this guy is, so much knowledge and experience that should every kid that starts to flyfish just take in. Thanks for the video, i hope this pandemic goes away soon so that my journey to United States finally happens. A visit to your shop is a must then. Take care and thanks for the videos once again.
Thanks Brian, your tuition is extremely useful. Your tips and breakdown makes sense and it allows me to understand the micro basics of how to become a better caster. I am in Australia and everything you say makes sense. Thank you.
I am new to fly fishing, and really enjoy your teaching style, and humor. Just went to your store and bought some of the items you mention. Great videos
I watched Flip prove “the rod is an over-priced pointing tool” at a fishing show in Houston sometime around 2000. He took the tip section of a 4-piece rod and casted 100’ using a double haul. Every time I struggle to muscle a cast 60’, I think back to that day. Great videos. Thank you Flip, Brian and Mad River for putting these out.
This is a great video. I am just starting fly fishing but videos like this really help me out. I have bass fished for many, many years. I would almost rather cast a fly rod all day and not catch fish than any other type of fishing. Thanks for the video.
Brian I’m just taking up fly fishing and this concept of hauling I never knew existed.. I’m getting my first fly rod for Christmas and at 65years old I need all the help I can get ..thank you
Wow look at Mr Pallot , I use to love watching him in the chronicles when I was a kid loved that show . I love Florida , the keys , Sebastian, the Bahamas . I miss it , I’m going back soon. Just bought my first fly rod. And reel here in Reno , another year , I’ll be back there , but for now I’m gonna learn to fly fish.🙏
I don't think that I have ever heard that explained so well. Between you and Flip I may even stand a chance at learning to cast and haul correctly. Too bad I have to work tomorrow. I would much rather be practicing this! As always, thank you for another great instructional video.
I just came back from a casting training by an EFFA instructor - he pointed to this video as the reference for the double haul - thanks and greetings from across the Atlantic
Learning so much from your Videos and really appreciate them. I actually grew up on Mad river in Zanesfield but back then didn't trout fish. I now live in Georgia just a couple hours from Blueridge so been practicing. Thanks again for the lessons!
Great video! I love all the lessons we can learn from those who have done it many years and are willing to take time to pass on their love of the sport. Thank you!
Holy crap. I know how to double haul, but never used it as the driving force behind my cast. Tried that out today and it made a HUGE difference in fishing my 8wt. Now fishing my 8wt feels as easy as fishing my 5wt! My mind has been blown.
WOW! You finally made it all come together for me. I've watched and seen a lot of "instructors" over the years (more than I care to mention) and they made it clear as mud but you turned the lights on! Thank You!
Great job, your vids really help. I just started fly fishing. I’m hooked! Before watching your vids I had a gazzilion snags and spent my entire time untangling line and climbing trees to retrieve flys. After practicing your common sense, easy to understand tips I now only have a half gazzilion snags and actually get my line wet. I got some great “nuggets” from you, like “throw the dart”, that were game changers for me. I’m using less effort, nailing an occasional cast and most importantly I’ve successfully rigged up, chosen the right fly, executed the presentation and legitimately hooked, landed and released some fish. Thanks! And thanks for being humble enough to pay homage to one of your teachers by bringing Flip on, that guy is a fly fishing treasure. Most UA-camrs would pretend they were the only expert. You get Cred. I’m off to fish. I need to see if the fish I caught were just dumb luck, or if I’m actually starting to get it. Cheers and thanks for all your hard work. It is appreciated. KEV
I have to say, I’ve been trying and trying for months, and I can never figure out how to get it to shoot. Seen tons of videos, none go through as an extent of detail as you have performed. I am going again this Wednesday, with this knowledge from you. I really think this video is going to help.
I have been told so many things over about how to double haul and when. Lots of wind knots later. I just watched this and went out into my yard and practiced. I finally like I knew what it was supposed to feel like when doing it right. Thank you for a great video that you simplified enough so all that I needed to do was go out practice. Going to try sinking lines next weekend. 😂 you guys have a lot of great videos. Thank you for the work you put into them. It shows

Just excellent clear points and so easy to understand the theory behind it all, excllent teaching as always, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge so freely.
Probably the most important 17 minutes I've ever spent on studying the mechanics of the 2haul. I've been doing it ever since I started fly fishing last summer, but the explanation of the timing and physics have been enlightening. Had no plans to fish this weekend, but might just go to the ballfield and practice. Thanks...but I don't think I'll try that harmless cast more than once. I have neighbors.
Man to be out there with Flip! I grew up watching him on "The Chronicles". Between watching him and my dad, (wondering why I kept throwing out and immediately reeling back in live shrimp), is probably why I got back into fly fishing. Thanks for this video and I hope and PRAY Flip is doing good.
When I'm teaching students to fly fish, they often have these big ideas from what they've seen on TV and expect to only use it on large open rivers for 100' casts. I use this method on extremely small streams with light flies strictly because I can cast without these great big movements of the rod because my haul is what loads the rod, not me swinging it. Great video!
Ooooh. NOw I see what that's all about. Was so so so confused on why or how it worked. Flip's little example of how the tip loads up. Nice nice nice. Thanks man
Great video Brian and Flip! I will practice as soon as it breaks 30. Degrees! I was taught to hammer down the pull and never thought that was correct. Smooth and even application. Perfect!!
Thanks for tuning into this double haul fly casting episode featuring our good friend, Flip Pallot!
Thanks for uploading this and sharing your knowledge passed down from an experienced fly fisher. This really helps getting the fly out there!

Thanks so much for watching and please stay tuned!
Thanks for watching. We appreciate you being here and please stay tuned.
Flip was great explaining the double haul!!
Agreed! He is the MAN!!!
Thanks for watching. Flip is doing very well. Stay tuned as we have much more coming with him.
This is the best video I've seen on the double haul -- love the detail given concerning the reason it's done and the mechanics behind it. Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching. Glad we could help.
Thanks. Now I just need to get out and practice. You make it look easy peasy, like butter.
Thanks for watching.
Great video. Took ten minutes at work to get the hand motion down. Cant wait to try it at home tonight!
Thanks so much for watching! Let us know how it goes.
Thanks for backing us up here and thanks for watching. Stay tuned.
@@Madriveroutfitters Definitely, I love how straight forward and to the point you guys are. Very informative and not intimidating at all.
Ooooh. NOw I see what that's all about. Was so so so confused on why or how it worked. Flip's little example of how the tip loads up. Nice nice nice. Thanks man
Thanks so much for watching and happy to help.

Great video Brian and Flip! I will practice as soon as it breaks 30. Degrees! I was taught to hammer down the pull and never thought that was correct. Smooth and even application. Perfect!!
Thanks for watching. Smooth and even.
Brian, Feels like I discovered fire! Your (and Flip’s) Double-haul lesson and deep insight is generous and priceless. Thanks for teaching. ~ Emeric

As always great instruction. I noted that Skip held his rod with the reel horizontal.
