Great review and playing--thank you. Do you know how this new model compares to an older King 2280? Basically, if I find an old one on eBay is it as good (or better or worse) than this one? Thanks

I had one of these. Big sound and built like a tank. The valves weren't really clunky sound wise but couldn't
compare to my Besson in speed. Higher range was awesome, all the way to treble double G, using matched mouthpiece.

For me after high Bb it just slides around that area so it’s hard to hit a note constantly

I have a 2280 from 1982, mine keeps the mouthpiece nice and snug. And yes, the metal valve guides are a bit noisy. Not bad though.

For the mouthpiece receiver: If you use a Bach-equivalent the problem will be gone. The Bach mouthpieces are nice and snug in the receiver.

Would you recommend these horns over something like the JP274 or Wessex Dolce?

Awesome Dad i cannot tell much of a difference between my jp and a Sterling virtuoso except for a small weight difference

These are my schools horns. They may be more beat up than a new one but I will say this, it's super out of tune, the valves are heavy and loud, do not buy.

I would prefer those more than the King they are both compensating and are much cheaper but are very good quality horns.

Do you know of any significant differences between this and the Yamaha 321. I know they have different shank sizes but that’s about it.

Well given that the King has a larger shank, it's going to have a larger bore size. This will result in a much "bigger" sound and requires some more air to be pushed in order to let the horn speak.
I almost think of the Yamaha 321 as a beefed up Yamaha 201 (the standard/beginner horn Yamaha offers aside from the 211). The 321 and 201 has the same bore size, bell size and apart from the added forth valve, the exact same tubing. They seem pretty similar too.
With that being said, the Yamaha 321 seems only like a slight upgrade from their beginner/standard Euphoniums. The King 2280 is being marketed more as a true intermediate solution. Tone quality wise I feel the 2280 is significantly better than the 321. The 321 is definitely more free blowing but I feel if you put the two together the King will be the more pleasing "solo" tone.
What Yamaha gets pretty good at is having their horns blend well with virtually any set-up, which allows the 321 to often be a great option for band programs. But for individual focus or just to have a bigger sound within the ensemble that can fit really well into the Tuba sound I would go with the King 2280. Now I will say I feel the Yamaha 321 seems to be more consist with tuning across all ranges (however it has been a while since I played on a 321).
Another difference between the two horns is the valve guides. Yamaha notoriously uses plastic valve guides. Over time these end up getting off track or worn down and have to be replaced. Not a big deal but it tends to get a bit annoying having to replace them. The King comes standard with metal valve guides but are WAY more clunky and louder than the Yamahas. The king does comes with replacement plastic though which I believe will make the valves themselves a littler quieter.
Lastly the lower register of the King 2280 is way more open and free than the Yamaha 321, but is way harder to control especially in tune. Yamaha has done a great job of keeping the horn pretty even in terms of response and level of volume throughout the horn, but if you want to develop your lower register as a player, the King 2280 will speak much better in the extreme low registers.
