My foot drop will NEVER get better because of MS. I HATED the Medicare issued AFO brace because not only did the brace cause discomfort, I was limited to what shoes I could wear (usually two sizes larger than my true size and in wide width to accommodate the AFO). I finally saved enough cash to buy the Saebo brace since watching this video last year. Night and day for comparison. My gait is the same BUT without the bulkiness. And shoes that are my size! It felt weird at first, however, my leg and foot were finally comfortable. Even though I still use a cane, I appreciate Bob and Brad for showing something I never knew existed.
    PEACE

I had a stroke on February 17, 2022. I have used the Saebo brace on my left foot for approximately two months. You may need assistance with the initial setup, but it is easy to put on. This brace works best for someone with an active lifestyle and you don't have balancing issues. It feels more natural because nothing is inserted inside your shoe. If you have issues with your ankle rolling in or out, I would recommend a more stable AFO like the plastic brace in the video. I also have a carbon fiber AFO that I alternate with my Sabeo brace.
The only issue I have with my Saebo brace is that the brace will slide down my ankle with my sock throughout my day because I have skinny ankles. The strings that pulls my toes up will also loosen when the brace slides down my ankle. Therefore, I have to tightened it repeatedly to raise my toes enough to clear the ground when I walk.

I had a stroke decades ago, and have tried so many different afos and such. They each do something well, and of course things not so well. This is by far the least invasive and most effective brace for daily use that I have found!

I had Guillain Barre disease 3 years ago. It compromised both my legs and arms and hands.
For my legs I had been wearing the white braces in different shapes; from the really thick ones to the more thin and flexible model.
In fact, probably by the end of this week I will be getting a new model, similar to one called Comfit AFO , made by a swedish firm called Embreis.
Mine is being made of fiberglass. We hope it's going to come up as thin and also as flexible as if it were made out of carbon fiber.
My goal is to be able to wear it everyday with my normal footware and be able to walk and even drive my car with them on.
Normally at home or work I don't require them. But when it comes to go out on the street and walk long distances I definitely require them.
I will let you know if they work for me.
Very nice instructive videos. I appreciate it then a lot. Thank you both for your help.

The drop foot brace made by Ossur has served me well for my extreme drop foot. It is easy to put on, get inside any shoe, comfortable, and at $50 to $60 it's way less expensive. I'm now considering the Richie Brace. There's a model for side to side stability and drop foot.

I have a foot drop due to an illness, I had as a baby and I am 90% paralyzed on my left side. I wear a metal AFO that is attached to the shoe. The plastic brace that I tried hurt my foot so bad and I was still wearing out the toe of my shoe. The metal brace is so comfortable and lets me do the activities that I really enjoy such as square dancing.

Sorry to hear of your illness, I have Cmt disease and 2 drop feet. I have been wearing the white plastic Afo's- I hate them, what is the name of your metal brace and where did you get it.? Everything is so manly looking. Nothing feminine and light.

@@joyceannetesta701 It is the old fashioned AFO that were popular in the 50's. That was the only brace I could wear. The physiotherapist at Rehab Centre ordered them. I also had an appointment with a Physical and Reconstruction Specialist. I did try the plastic brace but I still wore out the toe of my shoe and there were times I could not wear it because it hurt so much. The metal brace which is attached to the shoe has never let me down,.

I’m an RN who didn’t realize I had loss of feeling in my foot or foot drop until laying in bed and realized I couldn’t dorsiflex my foot. We don’t know why I have it. I did have L4-5 surgery last fall but had a CT and they say no impingement. No stroke, it’s weird. But I had a hip injury (torn labrum, torn gluteus medius and minimus and a horrible bursitis) and I rolled my ankle anf\d fractured it. So I was in a boot. Then I fell two more times thinking it was the hip until I realized I was stubbing my toe, and the other day I ended up with a spiral fracture in my 5th metatarsal. I’m still trying to figure it out, and have kegs scheduled but I’m only 60 and very bummed that I may have to live with this forever. Also have a boot on each leg for fractures because of it! Darn. 💩

Welander distal myopathy is also a source of foot drop. Usually you see the hands curling in first tho. Most often the first sign is not being able to erect your middle finger straight. My dad became symptomatic 40 years ago at 37. (Only in my families world can you get a rare disease you can't even flip the bird at. LOL )

I developed left foot drop following a bilateral fasciotomy on my left calf after having a heart probe inserted in the left groin and developing compartment syndrome . The post-op care was seriously screwed up. Rehab did not fully correct the problem, and my gait has been off for the past 15 years. I have the pelvic lift gait typical of foot drop sufferers. I don't use any prosthetics and I manage without a cane. However, I can't hurry up, jump or run. I am 71 now, so, not likely to regain any losses.

I believe it will be a game changer for me. I like that you can wear any pair of sneakers and I don’t have to take over 30 minutes and require assistance to put it on. However I am contemplating the perispinal etanercept procedure, just liquid embrel injected in the base of the spine while the head is inverted. The Mayo clinic is one of but a few clinics that administer this procedure, the other being the two physicians who patented the procedure and thus too costly for most over the seven year patented period. My question is has anyone had the procedure and did it work, usually within minutes of the injection.

It was called a Dictus Band. It was amazingly helpful. After a few months a Physio therapist used a shock gizmo attached just below my knee with a trigger under my heel so when weight was taken off my heel it fired and lifted my foot (I couldn’t lift my foot at all). After only 2 fifteen sessions with that my brain found which muscles to fire and I was 100% better than it was. Still not perfect but a lot closer than I was.

I'm going on 11 years with mine. I'm one of those you see tripping over nothing at all 😂 ("Just testing gravity." Or "Who put that floor there?!")
Don't give up hope, friend. My best advice is to stick with your physical therapy (whether administered to you or something you do at home). I wish I'd done better with mine. I definitely have improved a TON over time (Praise God!), but I can only imagine how much better it would be if I had been disciplined.
I'm here because I want to get back into better habits with it. Keep your chin up (even if your foot won't 😉). I'll be praying for you guys!

I'm 28 and its been 3 months, I have flaccid foot drop.
Mine was caused by being on ventilator in a coma for 21 days. I had ammonia kidney dialysis fluid sucked out of my lungs 2 blood transfusion temporarily paralized. Ect.
Anyways if its nerve damage, you need to be on heavy duty vitamins and keep up with your pt.
My pts told me being on these vitamins restores 1/8th of and inch in nerve growth a day. And over the course of months to years its significant.
Its never over especially if you're young.

      @Anna-tc6rz 5 років тому +2

Maybe, it depends on what the problem is. If you can talk to your dr about physical therapy. If not I've been using resistance bands to help strengthen the muscles there. I still have to use one for work or whenever I'm going to be walking long time but I dont for shorter trips anymore. I have a degenerative nerve disorder so eventually I'll have to use them all the time (basically wont be able to tell my foot to lift) but strengthen them as much as possible should delay it

My drop foot is completely unmovable -it’s numb and I can’t move any part of my foot or toes. I wear that brace that bob had -the one that rubs the skin and gets hot during the summer. • @lucysarahbest

This saebo brace is for a pure drop foot. The big white plastic brace also controls medio-lateral stability and has a plantarflexion stop so will also control knee hyperextension. They have 2 different functions so you can't say one is better than the other. An orthotist will be able to assess each patient and say which one is most appropriate.

Ì have this too. Have abiut 50% dorsisflexion...foot is half the strength of the other. Big toe just hangs there! I ride my bike an hour a day, do general yoga exercises, persist with calf raises, and have modified my arch suppirts with stick on neoprene. For some reason, walking in my ankle boots with a liw heel feels very stable.
Your big toe is your push off for the end of your step, so let yoyr step be short if that is easier. I have a cane I use to keep my body aligned, as the twist your body will try to do is hard on the back. I also used the toe lifting brace and it felt great!!

Wow. This is awesome. I have had foot drop for almost 3 decades, practically my normal gait since I got used to it. I had a surgery for it wen i was 5 or 6yo. I do not know if i was born with it or not bc no one present when I was born is still living in a human body so I cant even get a clear explanation, just speculations from those who saw me growin up. So as a close to 40yo, can the saebostep be of help ? I have never controlled my toes on my affected foot in this life . And I feel stiffness when I walk or when I lie down to sleep or practically anything that has to put the foot to action. Is there any help I can get. If I am sober and its bedtime, it takes upto 5 hours to catch the first glimse of dizziness due to the tensions in my affected foot. The nightime situation in particular is really what worries me, for it keeps me up till early morning and when I have lost all energy then it softens, then i can catch a 2-3 hrs sleep which usually starts from around 6:30 in the morning. Any suggestion or questions will be welcome

I have “flop foot” where I can’t control the deceleration of my dorsiflexion when I walk. The result is the ball of my foot slaps down. Now the ball of my foot is always swollen. I addition my big toe is overcompensating to help with the acceleration of dorsiflexion, resulting in a sore under the toenail of my big foot. I tried an afo device but it does not help with the deceleration phase. Do you know of any devise that I could try to alleviate some of my problems.

Dont worry bout the laughs. I'm 57 and understand that if (they) cry,it affects us all. But if they laugh, then at least they're happy. I dont take it personally. I dont see it as "at my expense", because i do not give anyone power of authority over my spirit. If you begin to just smile back at them, then you will notice those that are good and bad that laugh. The bad ones will stand out like a sore thumb because they laugh to get a rush out of our (bad) reaction to their laughing at us,then figure out they cant upset us anymore, and show power of authority over us,as they get mad and go find someone else to try to put down. The good ones will stop laughing after that because they are too young to know they are being mislead by an idiot that idolizes hatred. 😊
