  • Imagine falling and breaking your neck, but no one takes you to the hospital right away.
That’s exactly what a local woman says happened to her inside the St. Clair County Jail and now she’s trying to make sure something like this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
Lisa Brown takes full responsibility for why she ended up briefly behind bars. But now she says a 20-day jail sentence has left her with a life sentence of partial paralysis and disability.
    The full investigation here: www.wxyz.com/news/local-news/...

@@laa6549l am also a retired nurse that worked once in an overcrowded prison for just One Week. The game playing was not not only with the inmates, but also the staff. Even the young female staff had significant notable "hardness" about them. One such person was a guard that escorted me while l was passing meds in the maximum security area. She would take the inmate's empty paper drinking cup, crumple it and toss it on the floor. I later asked her how long she had worked there. Five years, she told me. The boss kept me on the phone for two and a half hours, begging me not to resign when l called him from home end of the week.

They should’ve tried to find out what happened to her and what it is she hurt then call for medical attention. No excuses for this treatment.

I was kept on the floor with 103 degree fever, despite them having access to my medical records clearly proving I was a kidney patient with a series illness, i was ignored for days until they finally sent me to the state hospital two blocks away. I had a friend die in the county jail in '07. Jail is not where you want to be if you need timely medical care. I was there with sepsis for FIVE DAYS. She might not have been plastered , she might have had a glass of wine at dinner and it caused her to register as intoxicated. It doesn’t mean she was just guzzling down a case of beer and chasing it with whisky 🥃. I know people who registered intoxicated after not drinking much as all. And they really thought they were safe to drive. It’s why I don’t drink at all. And the fact too many people are being drugged out in public places in their drink. I’m sure Riley Strain the young man in Nashville was drugged. Nashville is having lots of problems with people getting drugged. They might order 1 drink and then can’t walk. Some are getting robbed while under the influence of what ever it is in their drink and some lured away and worse things happen. It’s so scary out there. No doubt she’ll never drink again or probably not drive again either. I think the jail employees need to be fired and not ever hold a job like that again. It’s a position of trust. And one should have been trained to know what medical emergencies are. They don’t have common sense to know a person is injured.

The part where the “nurse” watched them do this but didn’t notice she couldn’t move and, apparently, either didn’t ask what her symptoms were or didn’t believe her? The part where no one noticed that she couldn’t stand? The part where she didn’t go to the bathroom for three days? The part where they repeatedly forced her into a sitting position? The part where she was finally taken to the hospital where actual medical experts did x-rays and tests and determined that she had suffered a catastrophic spinal injury and had to have surgery? The part where three years later she still can’t walk unaided, can’t reach up without great difficulty, the part where she can’t even brush her own hair?

I worked a little over two years as an RN in the prison system. There is no excuse for this treatment. There needs to be accountability and education on this for jail staff. The deputies who initially found her on the floor, need to be educated. I understand there is A LOT of manipulation going on by inmates, but, She should have been transferred to the hospital if she couldn’t move her toes from a fall that high. Why would she be placed on a cold hard floor? I’m so sorry she was treated so terribly.

Inmates do manipulate however, poorly trained or not the corrections officers have a responsibility to approach every complaint of injury with caution and treat it as though its valid, regardless of personal opinion. I don't think education would have helped these officers or the RN in this case. They clearly had a mindset as a group and were completely negligent and irresponsible. I'm amazed that not one person in the 3 days she suffered had it cross their mind to at least call to have her checked out. This is mind boggling to me. As @jerrymoore838 said every complaint needs to be taken seriously until proven otherwise. It's better to get someone help and they not need it than what inhuman behavior they did with this poor woman. I cannot imagine the pain she went through and to just be around some many people that won't help and just drug her around and left her for 3 days like an animal. They are just bad people. This kind of authority needs to be weeded out and removed. They clearly aren't capable of performing their job duties. This wasn't uneducated behavior this was some sort of power high with lack of empathy. This was just flat out ignoring that someone clearly needed medical attention by so many people.

Criminal or not, none of the way she was treated here was okay, and she deserves every penny of the massive payout she's bound to get. They had a duty of care, and who knows how much additional harm they caused by dragging her around like that, on top of the delay in treatment for a critical injury.

It's abuse. Had she died, murder charges would have been appropriate. If a mother did this to her daughter, claiming she thought she was faking, and the daughter died, murder charges would follow. Here we have multiple people watching her possibly die, and yes you can die from cervical fractures. It requires stability and a group of people that will work together no matter what and will not be corrupted. It's difficult, but totally doable, so long as people would at least believe they could control themselves. Outside help is almost always needed. Where I live we had our neighbor bring us schools and proper education and industry. I would imagine a neighborhood that would hire teachers from the best educated places on earth could change how that neighborhood thinks about things in few years. Walk in their shoes sometime. Since all the mental institutions were closed down to save money, jails are where mentally ill people are taken after committing minor offenses. Jails have a very high population of the mentally ill. The officers have to deal with keeping gang members apart, breaking up fights and the fear that they themselves could be assaulted if they don't watch their backs. Not to mention prisoners throwing feces, urine and vomiting. It is a very difficult and ugly job. Correctional officers never get the recognition they deserve. Medical staff were making the calls in this case. They made a very poor evaluation of what needed to be done. Taxpayers will be paying for the mistakes of this for-profit jail health care system.
