In an effort to update things slightly: As of April 28 2024, the following things have changed: * [!] "Gale Song" no longer gives you (a version of) "Eye of the Storm!" - "Unstable Conduit" is a great alternative for the first (Adept tier) Tempest trait choice. * Runes in general have been reworked slightly into giving *only* stats, the bonus effects of the sixth rune(s) have been moved to Relics. There is currently no Relic giving the exact effect of Runes of the Pack. The *Relic* of the Pack does give the Boons, but it now triggers on *Elite Skill usage*, which in this case of the Glypth of Elementals is much rarer than the 30 s cooldown of the old runes. With the new expansion (Secrets of the Obscure - SotO) there is a nice synergy with Relic of the Fractal, which causes enemies with Bleed stacks to also get Burning (and Torment). For non-SotO Relic alternatives, maybe go with Relic of the Centaur? Seems like a nice way to gain Stability from Healing Skills, in this case from activating the Healing Signet. The "baseline" Fury WP talks about in this video is just not available at the moment, at least not as often as with the old Runes. * "Tempestuous Aura" (here an alternative for the second, Master tier, choice) has been reworked and now gives you a 10 % dmg increase buff when you give yourself an aura. Great alternative, since you'd be hard pressed to find a skill in this build that does *not* give an Aura... You will be trading the survivability of "Invigorating Torrents" for that, though. * As a great alternative for "Elemental Bastion" we now have "Lucid Singularity" which has been reworked into giving Alacrity, that is indirectly increasing dps (faster skill recharge = more skill activations per second). * The final option for the third Tempest trait choice (Grandmaster tier) "Tempestuous Aria" has also been buffed and now gives +25 % dmg for 7 s after completing an overload. This was only +7 % at the time of this video, so it wasn't a viable option. Bottom line for Tempest Grandmaster tier: All three choices (top, mid, bottom) are great and have you choose in order between dps, support and sustain.

Since I discovered Reaper, it’s been hard to go back to Ele. The damage it puts out is just unreal and there is so much inherent tankiness, not to mention a second health pool. Ele was always my main though so I’m excited to try this out
This build is a close second to me, from the constant shroud reaper build. If I want to play the game, I usually choose this ele build. If I'm watching a show and just running around facetanking everything, it's the reaper. Because that build is dumb. LoL
Truth be told this build is in fact stronger than any reaper build But only this specific celestial tempest build In relation to strength the strongest (by far) is the condi renegade (trailblazer of course) It is despite its many nerfs extremely overtuned and you can solo nearly everything A close second is the condi scourge (trailblazer) Its also extremely strong Note that both use the torment runes Third place is actually this ele build here and after it comes the reaper Really looking forward to the next elite specs and how the power ranking will shift (maybe ^^)
I really love this video series idea! Demonstrating a strong build leading into EoD so that we can feel good about progressing the story and having fun without dying constantly. Your last series helped me understand many of the intricacies and synergies of the traits, gear, and weapons. Someone like me doesn't connect all the dots very well, so these types of videos help me a lot. Thank you!
The Ele build you put out a couple years ago managed to get me playing at a better level than I was previously playing at. I have since fallen out of love with the game, but this build does tempt me to jump back in.
Loving this build! Elementalist was the first character I ever created. I've since unlocked all elite specialization for each profession this game has to offer and now for the first time I feel like I can use my ele without being afraid someone sneezes into my direction. This is a great balance of sustain and power.
Dude I feel the exact same way bruh! Elementalist was also my first profession I ever played as! I never felt so satisfied with playing Ele in my life!
Full Celestial and superior rune of the firebrand gives you 98.95% increase quickness duration. You can round that up to 100% with a few infusion. With that combination you can get permanent quickness uptime when you use a Cup of Light-Roasted Roasted Coffee and Superior Sigil of Celerity. Alternatively you can use Superior Rune of Radiance and add Superior Sigil of Concentration to become an aura sharing beast.
A huge think that i never see anyone do is to have scepter in your secondary slot and use the earth attunement second skill to boost up your toughness before combat. Its definitely useful and its free.
I do love me a good solo build. Ele is often between unkillable and a dps glass canon, but it's difficult to find a good balance where you do both. The quickness sigils really make a difference.
I just recently came back to GW2 and wanted to play a Mage class. Watched several vids on Ele's and loved yours. Pieced it all together, with the exception of the trinkets and I'm absolutely loving it. Thank you
Adding a new post here : I went to the djinns place 2 or 3 days ago just to have fun, seeing my character being burnt to death... That's what I thought but in fact... I arrived the wrong side, easily kiiled one then 2. then the one inside. I passed the door not noticing the guards. While fighting them I unfortunately aggroed the others and thought ok, "For the Honour" (5th element ref)... Well I was able to kill them all never being down-state ! Your build is crazy and fun ! I love it ! Thank you again WP ! (7.2k DPS on golem with my equipment, 10k with active bonuses )
Love your content, was how I learned some of the best PvE specs nearly a year ago when I first started playing. While I have tried the build you've done in this video, I modified it slightly and instead of being a Tempest I'm using Weaver with Celestial and with the same runes and sigils with Sword/Dagger. Tempest is fun in some areas of the game, but personally i've found Weaver just more fun for the "up in your face" style of elementalist. But I do want to thank you for showing this build as it inspired me to try the very similar build on weaver I've been having a blast with.
This is marvelous, thank you. I've started playing again after a long break, and kept getting squished in open world. This is a ton of fun, and keeps me alive a whole lot better.
3:08 "This is me solo-ing one of the events that usually groups are meant to be doing." Excuse me mr. WoodenPotatoes, but that is definitely my very own Branded-style Tempest helping you out there! I would like to take at least some of the credit! I demand compensation! (Seriously though, thanks for all the content you make - your past videos helped me a lot in putting together a build for the very Tempest you fought alongside!)
Hi WP! Just wanted to let you know that I am super excited for this series. This video was excellent, a quality update to the last series. This is the perfect thing going into the new expansion to have more fun with a great game. Since you asked, I would request your new PvE Ranger Build and the new Guardian Build next. Even with the prior guides, I still do not find those classes as engaging as several of the others. I would be excited to see your new builds for both. Thanks again, mate! Keep up the quality videos!
I have been running this build on my ele in Drizzlewood Coast for a while now and I can say this is a fantastic build. I will also be bringing my Cele-Ele through Cantha! Thank You WP!!!
WP a quick tip, another very good change this year, a level 80 boost now gives a full set of Celestial gear, armour, weapons (Ele gets a staff and trident), trinkets etc. Ele gets Rune of the Elementalist, weapons have force and accuracy. It's a decent fairly cost effective way to immediately get nearly the full set up. Only really need to get a celestial dagger and warhorn as well as the recommended runes and sigils.
Hey WP, usually I do not comment on videos but here this is required. This build is incredible. I am using it and moving my marauder gear to celestial. Although I am not full celestial, I am able to solo most HP of HoT and PoF. It is so versatile, you got a lot of mobility and sustain. On top of that, I feel much tankier than my necro…. Crazy. Again well done and thanks for the extremely good content that you continously produce!
This is great, I played around with elementalist during the beta and liked the class but either killed things like I was hitting them with a pool noddle or was a glass cannon with cracks already in it. Love the balanced build and glad you are updating these videos.
Thx WP! I just came back to GW2 and was running EoD as a Weaver. Frustrating is the word. Going back to Tempest and trying your build. I've always love the Tempest playstyle and this build seems like a lot of fun.
This is a great update on the build. I am currently running the previous build you posted for Tempest and it's done me very well. I'll be checking this one out as well. You explain things well for the builds. I'm not a min/maxer (it gives me a headache to even think about it!), so having a build explained very well is great! Pull a profession out of the hat and do the next one - I'll be watching for all of them. Thank you for taking the time to do these build explanations. It's definitely helped my game play!
Damn WP, you weren't exaggerating when you said you will feel like a God playing this build. This build is incredible. Easily feels as strong as my TB/Cele Herald/Renegade. Anecdotal story below:- Over the last 9 years I have maybe 2 hours playtime on Elementalist. The bristleback demo / no dodge flame djinn demo really piqued my interest here though. Boosted an ele to get the full set of Cele gear cost effectively and quickly. Put together a summoner build and went off to farm HPs for Tempest. The build is mental and super fun. Decided to push and see what I could do with it and even with my 0 level of skill on ele I solo'd all of the PoF HPs, almost all of Verdant Brink and some of Auric's to unlock Weaver as well and literally wasn't in any danger even once. Worst I did was have my HP drop to 50% because I forgot I voted heal in water briefly.... Amazing build.
Thank you so much for this video. I am not very good at build crafting and I always thought that the only way to play an Elementalist viably (or other classes) is full berserker or condi. I completely stopped playing the class even though it was my main because of how squishy it felt compared to a full viper Necromancer. Despite loving the theme of an Elementalist I could no longer play a class that constantly dies in open world content. Watching your video has motivated me to go full Celestial with some tweaks to your traits and I am so happy that I did. This new Ele is the only thing I want to play now :)
I've been playing one Mesmer since launch, always improving that build. Just about a week ago I've arrived at a version that kinda has the same philosophy as your tempest build. It's as follows: Full celestial, traveler runes, Axe/Torch (Sigils: Doom & Energy), Staff (Sigils: Stars & Energy), Precision infusions Specializations: Chaos (1/3/3), Illusions (3/2/1), Mirage (2/3/2) Utilities: Signet of Ether, Phantasmal Disenchanter, Phantasmal Defender, Blink, Jaunt Runes of the Pack or fireworks do it too, but there's already so many boons that it's not needed. Precision infusions could be switched for concentration or condition damage. The does over 9k dps on the golem and has some really good sustain. Chaos stacks stability, might and makes chaos storm easily accessible. Illusions stacks a ton of might, some quickness and reduces shatter cooldown. Mirage is mostly for survivabily, vigor and regeneration which synergizes with chaos.
Love it! Looking forward to the whole series, will be interesting to see what improvements will be coming i haven't thought of. I got a feeling firebrand will be using celestial as well, lots of power dmg and condi. What i am really curious about is how one can improve necro next!
Tried out your build, and really opened up the play style. I switched out Fire signet for air on a map farming run and that extra movement speed boost was glorious.
I feel it would've made more sense to go over traits before skills. Stuff like saying you want to use Signet of Fire on cooldown only makes sense because you're traited into Earth, for example
Thank you so much for bringing build breakdowns back, WP! You're so thorough with your explanation and you keep accessibility of high end content to newer players in mind. Tempest has had my heart since it first came out, and I'm loving the quality of life since making the tweaks you've suggested here. All the best & much love!
I actually run Celestial Tempest in wvw for both roaming and in groups and its really strong so if you do this build for pve it should work for wvw too with a little tweaking the reflect against rangers and deadeyes is really funny most just give up if i dont kill them first
1 thing I would like to add is to have a stacking sigil on your off set and underwater set for free stats. I like to have perception to get closer to having everything crit but there are others like bloodlust/cruelty/corruption for more damage, Momentum or Life for more sustain, or Stars for the "cele" stat buff treatment. Edit: Forgot to mention that these stacking sigils aren't super important, so if anyone else chooses to add them on the off set, don't be too fixated on getting the max 25 stacks. All builds function fine without it. only get stacks in situations where there are a lot of enemies and allies to get them quickly. When fighting solo or in a small group. It's usually not worth it sticking to a worse weapon set unless your off set is also the same weapons (in this case, dagger/warhorn).
WP thank you so much for your guidance on this... i have been playing berserker since i started playing with my ele as my main and its been a struggle for so long until now, thanks again
I hope your other builds will feature Celestial or Celestial alternative too since that’s the gear they give you on Boosted characters, which everyone buying EOD is going to get one.
Something Ive always had trouble with using your old marauder ele build was packs of smaller enemies that dont have obvious telegraphs on their attacks or you just cant dodge them because its so many small attacks, Nice to see the bristle backs which demonstrate that issue.
Running Tempest in PvE open world is so much fun. I use a similair build, unless i play scepter then i nearly always go freshair, but with daggers/warhorn then this sort of build is making enough damage for you to feel it is fast and easy and smooth.
I really like this build, i was thinking of something like this with quickness sigils for ele, i thought of maybe changing the fire trait on remove condis when you get fire aura, but now when i think about it, tempest has a massive cleanse on water attunement, so its a sweet spot indeed. I'll be testing that for my ele, thanks
The fun thing about Celestial on Tempest specifically is you can run pretty much any other two trait lines. I like running Air and Water which is less condi more power, still incredibly sturdy, still generating absurd amount of boons for you and everyone around you. I have to admit I didn't think of using the quickness sigils, so I'm borrowing that from you. :)
This build is fantastic! I've been using it since you released this video and it has made elementalist a lot more enjoyable for me. I've always struggled a bit with ele and this has made it fun and easy to play. Thanks WP
Love the build! It would have been cool to show some people the nuanced interaction between the skills and build. Like using a shout while in fire overload will blast creating more might for you or vise versa in water for healing. Just so that people that want to try the build out kind of have a micro rotation to practice to see how the build can really shine when you know what's going on
Ohhh yeahhhh. I very liked your old builds,my main necro is almost the same as yours, and it feels easy anything i want to do... Some others are old,so not very usable nowadays. Im not an old player,so dont have ele yet,but defenatly will try this!!! Thanks all of your content in GW2! :)
i run a very similar build for a few months now, with air trait for fury and the glyph trait, with glyph of storms, minor elementals and the elite glyph, it gives you more options for runes since you get 100% fury from air but the downside is all the elementals die when you mount up so its less great for map exploration, rather for big events or bosses
Dear Woodenpotatoes Thank you very much for this video, your buildcraft videos are always a treat. I think buildcraft is a very fun area of the game that way too few people do. Would you consider maybe showing buildcraft around different stat types, so people can see that there are more than 3-4 viable stat combinations? I think showing people that there are builds out there that they will not find on metabattle could really give them an incentive to experiment on their own.
Ooh- I like the way you have the earth and fire playing off each other. I usually do earth+air, but I might try this as I'm dragging my crafting ele kicking and screaming through HoT :P
My votes for for Warrior next. Champion Krait Hypnoss, in Sparkfly fen. Is usually up and spawns southwest of the Brooloonu Waypoint. Small platform (unless you want to fight in the water), lots of adds and condi's. Edit: if that one isn't there, there's one in mount maelstrom as well, at the restless deeps (larger platform to fight on though).
Excellent build WP you need to give this one a name like how in the last round of builds you had "the summoner", "the tetherbreaker" etc. haha Also I vote ranger for the next video
I have been running celestial ele for years and it really is a lot of fun utilizing every aspect/ attunement of your kit. I personally never run the Earth trait line. While 'written in stone' is nice for permanent signets, the "damage" traits in earth for bleeding are just not worth it for me. It mostly give you bleeding *duration* and the bleeding on immob, again, has such a long duration that you waste most of the value on most open world mobs, who die so fast. For these purposes, I prefer going the air trait line which takes care of your fury uptime, offers you great damage GM trait options and kills most monsters way faster. The quickness sigils in your weapons are something I could, however, think about
I re played-explored HoT with my mesmer a few days ago, having to switch to my mirage tanky build to survive because the power chrono was really too fragile... Then I see this incredible fight against bristlebacks shouting "'Ohhhh yeahh !!" Amazing !
Definitely better than the last build. I have a few small problems. The biggest one is the condi cleanse. Imo condi cleanse is really good in open world these days. Having something on demand would be nice. Other than that, the unreliable quickness vs bosses you can't cc and not taking the protection trait in earth are questionable. Really good otherwise.
I really love this video, very similar build, almost the same I use in my ele who is by fair my most played character. I have sticked with the tempest for years, never rly enjoyed the weaver. The demostrations were rly cool btw
1:00 I mean, if Catalyst is anything like Tempest and Weaver, it'll only cost 250 hero points to unlock. Given the vast excess of hero points, there's no excuse not to be able to become a Catalyst 5 minutes after logging in!
Tip: You should have a Scepter equipped as a secondary weapon, just in case you need range or want to precast (about precast: earth 2 3 and fire 2 3, which give protection + might but also blind + aoe dmg if you time it well and swap Dagger last second. You can't precast air 2 3 because you'll be locked on combat, water 2 is worse than fire or earth dmg and you regen out of combat so water 3 is nothing, can't precast it really).
Always fun to see a similar build to the one I've been playing for the last few months, this really is a fun build. I need to try those quickness sigils!
I just want to say I appreciate this video. Although it was a bit of a pain for me to cobble together the gear and get the hero points for specialization (I had some existing resources from being a returning player, but was doing it on a new char), now that I've got it working, it plays so nicely and I'm starting to get a feel for how to use it properly. I don't think it's quite as strong for me cause I'm running orange and yellow gear lol, but it's still very nice, and I'm taking on stuff in Heart of Thorns that put me off of solo play in the past. The whole dynamic of switching elements and trying to play them right situationally has a nice depth to it that has a bit of a "easy to learn, hard to master" thing going on. Great fun and has really made solo play fun for me again, even in the harder zones. The combined survivability and power makes me feel so much more empowered and helpful as a contributor to events in general. I've typically gone glassy in the past and it doesn't go very well in the harder zones unless I'm in a big event group.
So excited for your return to build talk WP! The fluff that's been coming out for a while isn't my cup of tea but this stuff is my favorite! I'll be waiting for guard and necro :) keep it going, the build stuff is great!
For the fire traitline I actually prefer taking smouldering auras, mainly because with mounts now, condis on you means you're delaying your remounting time - which is annoying as heck. Rather than waiting for condis to tick out slowly, I use that trait, swap to fire (which automatically gives me a fire aura), removing 1 condi. Or I can press dagger air 3 twice and it removes 3 condis, or warhorn 4 in earth. Mostly for QoL because condis REALLY annoy me in open world.

It is despite its many nerfs extremely overtuned and you can solo nearly everything
A close second is the condi scourge (trailblazer)
Its also extremely strong
Note that both use the torment runes
Third place is actually this ele build here and after it comes the reaper
Really looking forward to the next elite specs and how the power ranking will shift (maybe ^^)
Same here, I've started to enjoy ele thanks to his tempest build and I'm still using it, mostly pve and fractals and is so op and fun tu play it!
Its definitely useful and its free.
i'm so excited for this, can you believe that i STILL watch those old build videos to this day? Still love them, too
I do love me a good solo build. Ele is often between unkillable and a dps glass canon, but it's difficult to find a good balance where you do both. The quickness sigils really make a difference.
really enjoyed the first series. looking forward to more open world pve builds
3:08 "This is me solo-ing one of the events that usually groups are meant to be doing."
Excuse me mr.
That's all awesome background in your main profile page the silhouette of game characters
Would love to see Guardian next, it's the only class I've _never_ managed to have fun on in Open World
This is a great update on the build.
THANK YOU! Love your thief build for map completion!
Damn WP, you weren't exaggerating when you said you will feel like a God playing this build. This build is incredible. Easily feels as strong as my TB/Cele Herald/Renegade.
Anecdotal story below:-
Over the last 9 years I have maybe 2 hours playtime on Elementalist.
I enjoyed this series 2 years ago. Really looking forward to the 2021 version! Thanks
It's as follows:
Full celestial, traveler runes, Axe/Torch (Sigils: Doom & Energy), Staff (Sigils: Stars & Energy), Precision infusions
Specializations: Chaos (1/3/3), Illusions (3/2/1), Mirage (2/3/2)
Utilities: Signet of Ether, Phantasmal Disenchanter, Phantasmal Defender, Blink, Jaunt
Runes of the Pack or fireworks do it too, but there's already so many boons that it's not needed.
Signet of Air is great, i used to run it on core ele all the time for the 25(/20) sec cd stunbreak and aoe blind. Such great utility.
I actually run Celestial Tempest in wvw for both roaming and in groups and its really strong so if you do this build for pve it should work for wvw too with a little tweaking the reflect against rangers and deadeyes is really funny most just give up if i dont kill them first
Even though I don't play GW2 anymore I absolutely love these buildcraft videos, thanks WP!
Missed your build series. Saw a post about this video on Twitter. Looking forward to other class open world builds!
My go to guy for builds since you started the series
This is a great guide, and I love the switch to 'must keep' traits and so forth. Really should be helpful for new players to this class.
This really just made me fall in love with my ele all over again and she's my main.
I hope your other builds will feature Celestial or Celestial alternative too since that’s the gear they give you on Boosted characters, which everyone buying EOD is going to get one.
This looks super fun, I can't wait to try it out! Just got my light legendary armor, so this is even easier to do :)
Gz
Something Ive always had trouble with using your old marauder ele build was packs of smaller enemies that dont have obvious telegraphs on their attacks or you just cant dodge them because its so many small attacks, Nice to see the bristle backs which demonstrate that issue.
Looks fantastic. I'm definitely gonna copy this
Running Tempest in PvE open world is so much fun.
Thanks WP
Please treat Necro next to a video just like this! It was amazingly helpful seeing you deep dive into a good core build and all the viable variants!
really cool build. I just got my tempest elite spec bc of your vid and it is indeed so fun!!
Nice, a new build series for open world goodness :) I am awaiting all the other specs :) THX WP
I LOVE this build. WP can you please make an updated version of this for the new expansion and relic update?
I love you for this build! Thank you!
It's my favourite Ele build
Glad to hear your voice again.
Love the build! It would have been cool to show some people the nuanced interaction between the skills and build. Like using a shout while in fire overload will blast creating more might for you or vise versa in water for healing. Just so that people that want to try the build out kind of have a micro rotation to practice to see how the build can really shine when you know what's going on
Thanks WP! Looking forward to your take on Necromancer. Cheers!
Yeah that build is crazy, I really enjoy this too. Thanks for making the Ele fun again for me!
Good, I want to see other builds updated too
Ohhh yeahhhh. I very liked your old builds,my main necro is almost the same as yours, and it feels easy anything i want to do... Some others are old,so not very usable nowadays. Im not an old player,so dont have ele yet,but defenatly will try this!!! Thanks all of your content in GW2! :)
tempest gale song is now different. but this is nice video and makes my build far more durable -thanks for sharing the tips
i run a very similar build for a few months now, with air trait for fury and the glyph trait, with glyph of storms, minor elementals and the elite glyph, it gives you more options for runes since you get 100% fury from air but the downside is all the elementals die when you mount up so its less great for map exploration, rather for big events or bosses
Dear Woodenpotatoes
Thank you very much for this video, your buildcraft videos are always a treat.
I think the HP near the Dragon Stand portal in TD is a great showcase of resiliency - especially the sniper.
Otherwise, doing group events solo like the Crucible in POF to show off cleave potential would be awesome.
Really enjoy watching these. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
Fantastic guide :) Bringing me back to my sylv ele until EoD hits and my engineer gets her own Mech ;)
I love this build! I am looking forward to what WoodenPotatoes will do with Catalyst.
Excellent build WP you need to give this one a name like how in the last round of builds you had "the summoner", "the tetherbreaker" etc. haha
Also I vote ranger for the next video
Great build! Will try this, always wanted to try Celestial build. Celestial Mesmer next? :D
For anyone wondering. I'm no ele main, but this build is still so much fun to play!
NGL this builds still is the most fun i ever had and still have on Ele
I have been running celestial ele for years and it really is a lot of fun utilizing every aspect/ attunement of your kit.
I personally never run the Earth trait line. While 'written in stone' is nice for permanent signets, the "damage" traits in earth for bleeding are just not worth it for me. It mostly give you bleeding *duration* and the bleeding on immob, again, has such a long duration that you waste most of the value on most open world mobs, who die so fast. For these purposes, I prefer going the air trait line which takes care of your fury uptime, offers you great damage GM trait options and kills most monsters way faster.
The quickness sigils in your weapons are something I could, however, think about
You're Awesome with your guides
I re played-explored HoT with my mesmer a few days ago, having to switch to my mirage tanky build to survive because the power chrono was really too fragile... Then I see this incredible fight against bristlebacks shouting "'Ohhhh yeahh !!" Amazing !
Always love your builds and just videos in general!
So excited! Love this series.
Love to see you do a weaver as a comparison
Always fun to see a similar build to the one I've been playing for the last few months, this really is a fun build. I need to try those quickness sigils!
Either Mesmer or Guardian for me! I'm trying to decide which class to play for EoD.
I see you went back to old faithful 🤣 great video!
OMG its perfect for open world on ALL elementalist specs. I am having so much fun in open world.
Best build i found thank you :) It really made playing the game fun and accesible for me!
Yayyyy finaly updates for ur builds 🤩
Now i know what im doing tonight ;)
It's a good adjustment!
2 years later... Wanna go at it again? :3
Especially with relics and EoD and so many more boonsupport dps builds now
What an incredible build! Makes me want to main my Ele again instead of harby Necro..
I've been playing this with traveler runes which has been a lot of fun with the extra expertise(?) It comes with
