Amtrak was gearing up for their first high speed train endeavor throughout the mid to late 1990s. They struck a deal with Bombardier and Alstom to build not only a fleet of 20 high speed trains, but also a fleet of 15 new electric locomotives to replace their older and unreliable E60s. This sounded like a good idea in theory, but it didn't quite work out that way. Between Amtrak placing a lot of work onto Bombardier and Alstom, and then Bombardier and Alstom eventually not cooperating with Amtrak when they needed help, things were bound to go wrong for the HHP-8.

Going forward with Engines of Amtrak, the only other episode I have planned at the moment is the Charger series. I'll probably wait a bit longer until I go through with that episode though. I know about the Amtrak Airo fleet too, but those won't be on the rails for several more years. If I think another locomotive should get an Engines of Amtrak episode (and if there's enough free-to-use material of it), I'll go through with it, but for now, the series will be on-hold for a while. Thanks for sticking with EoA all these years! I can't believe its been nearly 6 years since I started it. The overwhelming support it has gotten really means a lot. It definitely gave my channel a huge boost in 2017 and 2018. I view the original episodes as a predecessor to the history-oriented videos I've been making these past few years now. Also check the description for links to the channels who sent in pictures and videos for this episode.
Neither locomotives are perfect but they look good. Please reply.
Its beautiful😢
Congrats AmtrakGuy I Loved It ❤❤❤ I Actually Made A Playlist For You
You forgot to pin this comment lol
It’s Kinda More Organized And Has All Of The Remade Episodes
Somehow this guy never fails to impress me with his videos.
What if all locomotives were perfect AND level? Plz reply.
@@LuisUrbieta I would be even more impressed. This guy never fails, I've been watching him ever since the Trainz derailment series.
@@UnofficialBigOne Wow
I appreciate Amtrak for using one the HHP-8s by using them as helping units. I’ve never seen an HHP-8 before. I hope to see one of them in the future.
If you go to Maryland/DC you can see a MARC HHP-8
Reminds me, if MARC can refurbish their HHP-8s, why can't Amtrak give their own HHP-8s to MARC and refurbish them for Amtrak and thus no problems.
Granted, reliability issues will still be a constant failure later on, but this is the thought I had.
I think you’re a genius. After all, the Amtrak HHP-8s have 8000 horsepower which is way too much, and even wheelslip problems.
1:57 I'm surprised that one railfan got scared of that HHP-8s horns.
@@RonnieThePRRLocoAKARPTLMR I think it was just poor design, the ACS-64s go to about 8600 and AFAIK have no problems with wheelslip.
Channels like yours are becoming popular. Mini docs are so enjoyable to watch, 5-10 minutes on a quick yet detailed cover is perfect, and you really cover everything fantastically and do a great job of going back and remaking when there’s more to say which is refreshing.
Maybe you can make a sequel to this series called equipment of Amtrak where you talk about most of the coaches of Amtrak and also some of the diners and cabs
i was just about to comment something like this
*take my like*
Two HHP-8's will be restored with an lowered Horsepower (around 6000HP). They will be used as maintenance engines and rescue engines.
hhp-6?
I think I remember "HHL" being in some of the files of the original Microsoft Train Simulator, so that name survived somehow.
Tons of Alstom products from the late '90s and early 2000s had severe problems. Including but not limited to the UK and Ireland there's faulty alstom products littered all across Europe from that era. Including the British rail class 175, class 180, and the Irish rail class a 8200 and class 2700 multiple units.
It’s thanks to you I got into my Amtrak craze in model train making. I built an F40PH, AEM-7, and an Acela train set because you brought back some really fond memories. Now I’m in the process of making a P42DC and an F59PHI . ALL THANKS TO YOU .Thank you so much not only for remaking this series but making it at all. Now I’m exited for whatever comes next from you
As much as I remember being obsessed with NEC videos back then, I didn’t even know the HHP-8’s were unreliable until sometime in 2022. Interestingly, unit 653 actually had a Narrow Font completely non-Hybrid K5LA one time or a few.
Great to finally see the HHP-8 Remake! This has always been one of the lesser known Amtrak electric locomotives.
Marc proved with a little refurbishment they could be serviceable but I understand Amtraks motives, love these things
Isn't MARC still using their bananas to this day?
@@joshuahamilton2201 Yes! 5 of them. On fast services mainly between was-bal but can also see them north of Baltimore
Bro I've been waiting for a new EOA video for so long, thank you and love your channel
Again, he has some of, if thee best content on Amtrak and other related topics. Keep it up.
I really love these guys, The matching looks with the Acela and the fact one of their biggest issues was too much power.
I ride the NEC MARC often and it always makes my day better when I see an HHP-8 at the head, I just wish it was more often and they would at least use another electric instead of their diesels on the fully electric line...
Thanks for another remake, amazing videos!
I remember seeing these a lot when I was a kid, I don’t really remember the AEM-7s kicking around, just a lot of HHP-8s and Acela Bombadiers and then all of a sudden the HHP-8s disappeared shortly after the ACS-64 showed up
I just read about the HHp8 in the 2006 edition of Trains Locomotive magazine issue! Great Video Jared!
An upload on my birthday??? Great video as always!
Yes! I have been waiting for this for quite a while now, but it's finally here!
Great video remake. I like catching up with anything AMTRAK especially Northeast Corridor information and videos. dag, Philadelphia
Awesome to see a new episode! Love this series! ~ Alex
It’s always a good day when amtrakguy365 releases a new video
Well here we are again. It’s always such a pleasure.
Thanks for remaking these. Came before the pinned comment, too! (as of the time of writing)
Alittle more on HHP-8 Cabcar conversion:
All 15 HHP-8 Locomotives will be converted to NPCU’s to run on all lines that use cabcars along the East coast. The HHP8’s will not replace any cabcars used currently.
It was pretty clear to Amtrak that the HHP8s were a mistake, cuz their issues were just too much for their own good. Glad to see them at least giving themselves another life as NPCUs
As a Touhou fan I get a lot of joy when you reference touhou
I love these remakes man. Ngl the originals are dope but I think the much better quality of your vids nowadays makes the original feel outdated.
That concludes the remake of Engines of Amtrak, stay tuned for more episodes.
Hey man, I appreciate it just wanted to let you know the link to my channel and the description is not working but thank you so much. This is a dream come true I’ve been watching you ever since 2016 (since I was 8) I’m so happy to see where you are today and thank you so much.
Fixed the link. Thanks for sending in your videos! It really helped out and I'm glad you've enjoyed my stuff for so long!
I can’t wait to see them running as NPCU’s. I’ve heard they’ll be used on the Ethan Allen Express so that they don’t need a P32 on both ends of the train.
I wouldn't be too surprised if they used the converted HHP-8s on Keystone trains as well. Alot of the Metroliner cab-coaches see action on these trains and Amtrak is constantly "bookending" these trains with ACS-64s on each end, thus the potential of bigger problems if Amtrak starts facing a backlog of maintenance on the 64s (until the SC-42DP locomotives and Airo sets for NEC and Keystone Corridor use are delivered).
Very nice 👍🏼
Hey man, I've watched all of your remade edition of this series, I saw your comment and I think the Charger Series would be amazing.
To fill in this gap, you can maybe do "Rolling Stock of Amtrak" with this you can do all or most of Amtrak's rolling stock for mail or passanger.
I know this would be difficult but its just a suggestion.
Thanks!
Good idea.
4:48 for some reason the sync is just so satisfying
I love it
The cab car is now numbered 9750 and has been under a lot of testing lately.
Love your videos on Amtrak, and other Railroads. Maybe you can do some on different railroads, and Railway's, maybe like the old Norfolk & Western, Southern Railway, the Virginian railway, and others that disappeared being swallowed up in mergers.
Another remake episode of Engines of Amtrak. The HHP-8 is a really cool electric locomotive, despite some issues with them from Amtrak. I had visited the Skunk Train in Fort Bragg, California. It wasn’t a very long ride, due to the tunnel collapse at the Fort Bragg end of the heritage railroad.
It's a shame these engines didn't work very well. Hybrid K5LA + steel bell is probably the peak of sounds as far as Amtrak power goes.
Cant imagine the ALC-42 episode coming out for another 20 years, if Amtrak guy 365 will even last that long
To be fair he already did an episode for the ACS-64 which is still fairly new so it wouldn't be long before the Siemens Charger gets its own episode
agree with you there. I think that once all variants of the Charger (SC44, Dual Mode, ALC42/ALC42E, SCB40, and SCV42) have been delivered and are in service it would seem appropriate to make a video about them.
I’d recommend covering the lrc train sets they are pretty interesting!
Love the HHP-8!
I recently learned Amtrak is bringing back their HHP-8s to be used on the Keystone corridor as cab cars to replace the metro liners you may already know that
I remember watching you when I was younger
You should do a video talking about most of Amtrak's work locomotives
Nice!
I think the original and remade videos are both pretty good.
Such a hot loco... sucks that it had the issues it had
8000 horsepower on a four axle locomotive is BEYOND overkill, if only Bombarider-Alstom should've known that before building the HHP units.
Pretty common to have four axles of that power output in Europe
Amtrak's unfortunate history with 6-axle locomotives is why they wanted a new electric with 4 axles.
I think Amtrak could use those HHP-8 NPCUs on the Empire Corridor trains as well, to add more trains to add more frequency and reduce turn around times. They should use them as a beta tester for what is to come with the Airo Cab Cars for the Empire Corridor trains, but with the current existing Amfleets and P32AC-DM Dual-Mode Genesis Locomotives by adding a Diesel/Electric switch to the HHP-8 NPCUs. I think Amtrak will continue to use the Metroliner Cab Cars until the Airo trains eventually take over.
i feel like they can review the hhp-8 if they just MAYBE JUST MAYBE spend some more time and a little more money cause tbh ii love how they look its a baby acela
You could probably discuss about the GG1 the same way that you did with the metro liners, but that’s only my suggestion
I doubt that’s gonna happen. He’s pretty much covered the GG1’s careers on Amtrak in the episodes featuring the units which replaced them…or at least tried to. Additionally, the GG1’s as well as the F and E units had pretty lengthy careers, but their time of Amtrak only amounted to a decade or less. The Metroliners, while designed for the PRR and introduced by the PC, spent most of their working careers with Amtrak. Their age is also why Amtrak chose to look for ways to make them work. The E’s, F’s, and G’s were planned for replacement almost from the start
4:07 Looks Like A Fan-Made Horror Film
I waited to watch this until I was on the California Zephyr, which is currently 10 hours and 10 minutes late.
I hope that an HHP8 is preserved.
Cool
Well Amtrak guy 365I think for your next engines of Amtrak video/what happened to Amtrak's routes Should be either general electrics GG1 or the Atlantic city express
hopefully in the following Days Could do Episode of the Rolling stocks of Amtrak sometimes in March
Babe wake up, new amtrakguy365
I love their horns
Do the maintenance locomotives.
Oh, and the Avelia Liberty.
Eventually, we'll need to see the SC-44 chargers and ALC-42s.
When an Acela and an E60 have a kid.
"it all started with my mom *the acela*and then my dad*E60*and they fell in love, and they had me. Hi I'm HHP-8 and my life it's kinda sad"
Finally
I’m sure EMD could a better locomotive like that than the HHP-8. One this for sure though, this video was better than the HHP-8’s themselves
Yes
1:58 Railfan gets scared by the train 😂😂
There must be a lot of railfans at Kingston, RI
Can you do a video on the Via rail LRC trains?
Trains without soot? Bummer.
I’d still ride ‘em, though.
Hey, nice video. Can you talk about engine seen in movies?
You can talk about Amtrak's EMD FL-9's or/and you can talk about the GE P32AC-DM's.
He already talked about that the P32ac-dm Genesis episode
@@SeanBleaking then just the FL-9 series
I'd be interested to know what MARC did to make the HHP-8s work out for them, especially since MARC doesn't seem to even want to use Amtrak's electrification in the first place (from what I've heard, Amtrak charges them too much for use of the electricity).
Also distressing that Amtrak had to depend upon a tobacco company for capitalization.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS
Do you all think 'Sharpnose' is nesseccary for any Regular Service passenger train locomotive? or just any European and Thirdworld snubnose engines can do?
why dont you do the SW & MP switchers on Amtrak, or the now retired GP work locomotive's that were once on Amtrak
You should make a video on how unrealistic the train crash in the super 8 movie and super 8 trailer is
and just mention that 1 switcher locomotive was pulling THAT MUCH CARGO AND WIEGHT
You could remade the acs-64s and/or the Acela Express
What’s going to be the next episode of engines of NYC? (I hope it’s something from the 1800’s!)
The hhp-8’s may have been bad but they look far better than the chargers
Great video… SIEMENS CHARGER PLEASE 🙏🏾
2:05 HILARIOUS
Would Amtrak lowering the hhp-8s power to say 7500 horsepower save them or would they still be problematic
since the GP40TC's became switcher and work locomotives, why dont you discuss some of Amtrak's switcher and work locomotives?
Had these units been 6 axles, they most likely would've worked better. More axles and wheels = more places to output power. Wheelslip would have been reduced and tractive effort possibly increased.
Talk about the rolling stock that Amtrak has
I miss these locomotives. Maybe connection to Marlboro Train?
And now some are becoming 9750-9758. 9750 and 9751 are complete and in Philadelphia’s penn coach yard of late
Can they pull the Acela Regional, too?
Can you go back to the entrance of New York Central and do the diesel locomotives
I love the HHP-8 and the AC traction AEM-7s but I hate the DC traction AEM-7s and E60s and the DC traction AEM-7s were scrapped.
4:28 OMG!!!!! AGAIN AND AGAIN LIKE IN THE DASH 8 AND GENESIS EPISODE!!!!
*GET THE POPCORN!!*
Can You Make The Sc-44 or Alc-42 Episode Plz
Did you do the P32-8BWH?
He did.
2:53
Are we not going to talk about that regen braking animation?
Could you do the F (and E) units, if you haven't made a video on the engines?
He should.
@@itsprettyswell2741 So... he hasn't made a video on them?
Nope
@@itsprettyswell2741 In that case I hope he does make a video on the locomotive(s)
Maybe do Amtrak NPCU
I wonder how they do with Freight Service since they have 6000 horsepower
That may make that a fast and easy job
One of the units had a Daffy Duck sticker just under the headlites.
