  • While Amtrak is predominately associated with the color blue, you'll find a handful of other colors featured across their system. These trains often have unique equipment and paint, and serve a specific purpose in the region they serve. From Amtrak Midwest to the Cascades trains, there's a lot of colors to cover!

    Apologies for my recent errors in videos. Sometimes I completely miss things while researching (and trying to verify info) or editing. By no means am I an expert at all the topics I discuss here. I do my best to double check things, but I’m a one man band for my channel and it can get a bit overwhelming, so I hope you understand.

    As someone who lives in the San Diego area, the Surfliner and Coaster services are two really neat unique train sets to see going up and down the area, the aforementioned busses on these routes also help a lot when the Surfliner's rail gets inevitably washed out like it did just recently thanks to all the rain. Really cool video though, I know you like covering lots of Amtrak services but maybe one day you could cover the Coaster service as it uses an interesting set of rolling stock

  • @pacificostudios

    Although Pacific Surfliner may have been adopted as a name in 2000, the service dates from Amtrak Day in 1971, and is descended from the Santa Fe's "San Diegan" service between LA and SD that originate in 1938. The extension of the San Diegan service to Santa Barbara began in 1988, and San Luis Obispo was first reached in 1995. Goleta, which is now the northern endpoint for many Surfliners, opened in 1998.

    Note on State-owned trains, such as West Coast trains like Cascades, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, and Surfliner-the states own the equipment, and manage the service. Amtrak is a contractor, hired by the state or the rail agencies to operate and maintain the trains. The branding and marketing comes from those agencies, not Amtrak.

      It's not poorly constructed, the engineer wasn't paying attention. There was no PTC and he missed the 60 mph speed limit. Not exactly the quickest or most cost effective solution to try to maintain 79 mph all the way through Dupont.

    A note about the Night Owl: Amtrak currently doesn't have sleeper service on 65, 66, & 67. There was sleeper service added back with a mid-2021 experiment that saw a lot of positive reception, but issues with bad track and crew unfamiliarity with Viewliners, among other factors led to Amtrak cutting the service in early 2022. It would be nice if Amtrak would return sleeper service on the Night Owls again but we just have to sit and wait.

    Another well done and informative video. I honestly wish we had something like this in Canada to expand regional passenger services given that VIA doesn't seem to offer much of that on their own (especially for areas outside the main corridor that could benefit from provincially backed services but use VIA as an operator like the case with these Amtrak brands). There's one small error though as you said Empire Service dates back to Penn Central in 1967 while Penn Central didn't exist until 1968

    • @TheRandCrews
      @TheRandCrews 7 місяців тому +2

      It’s tough if possible, maybe that Calgary - Banff train could be a start as a “Via” sponsored train but I’m not sure if that’s a private or public run system. Though I doubt any consvervative governments in places like the Maritimes and the Prarie’s would be interested starting a provincial transit system, seeing that my province of Saskatchewan axed our bus system thinking Greyhound would replace them and or others

      @@TohaBgood2 the points you address do not regard quality of service.
      The chargers have proven to be the largest headache for California service and universally disliked by crews.
      Per the SJJPA, the first high speed rail segment between Merced and Bakersfield (if it opens), will negate the need for any food service.
      Keep in mind many passengers are traveling from the northern end of the state by bus just to connect with the trains. They’re SOL if they want hot food I guess.
      The SJJPA also implemented a new program where station agents at stations that aren’t San Joaquin exclusive, can only sell tickets for San Joaquin’s.
      No checked baggage, no unaccompanied minors. The hours for specific agents also don’t include all timetable trains.
      The venture cars for the San Joaquin’s? Easily the worst car I’ve ridden in. It’s a rant on top of a rant so I’ll keep it short. The seatbacks have no recline, the cars rattle excessively, the sway is awful, and the only food “service”? Free snack packs or a bag of Chex mix.

    Small thing: the old Talgos were Talgo 6s, not Talgo 7s

    8:40 Talgo 6, not 7. As far as I know no American operators ordered the Series 7

    It wouldn't be too difficult to change the sidewall design of the Midwest Charger (during their next regular revision) to match the Venture cars better.

    When you showed the Midwest having the newer cars being in Texas still watching our two remaining trains basically operate on the bottom of the barrel equipment and p42’s like….when do we ever get those? 😂😂 Amtrak and Texas in general is missing the ball entirely by not having several statewide Amtrak routes covering the entire state. We need it. I have zero faith in our supposed “bullet train”

    • @austinhamill4177
      @austinhamill4177 2 місяці тому

      well that bullet train is being funded in part by amtrak, but a lot of texas land owners along the route are saying they will refuse to sell land

    • @jwrailve3615

      @@austinhamill4177 Imminent domain isn’t a fun way to lose your land. Majority of Texas is private land so eventually a ton of multi generational properties will be ripped through for a line that will likely never get finished with the speed of how fast things get built here. We all have a saying “be like i35 and never stop working on yourself” if they felt it was realistic and they were actually going to get more than just money out of it maybe more owners would sell. I’m sure if they wait long enough the new gen of owners will be the kids kids, and they’ll have no problem selling an entire families legacy real quick if a bullet train in Texas offers money for land.
